  • Great price. Goes for US$299 on Amazon & BH.

  • I'm tempted to get for my A6000, I was looking at Videpro were it is $195.80 so this saves another $7.90.

Remember that this is APS-C only, so won't be great with your A7 if you ever decide to upgrade to full-frame. Wish Sony stopped overcharging for their lenses. This is more than the Canon and Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lenses, both of which work with both APS-C (DX) and full-frame. That said, this does have OSS.

Sony does have a cheaper 50mm w/o OSS for their A mount lenses which are priced comparable to competition.

      • A-mount is dead though, I think Sony releasing their A7 series on the E-mount shows that their future is with E-mount. I don't think Sony ever intended for E-mount to be full-frame, which is why they made only APS-C lenses to start off with, but I wouldn't buy A-mount lenses anymore, just because I know the system is dying. Yeah, there's an adaptor, but I think it's a clunky solution and it's better to use native E-mount lenses.

        • Just because a system becomes 'dead' doesn't automatically make them stop functioning, a good lens is a good lens. Personally I would buy into Alpha mount if I saw something I wanted, and why not the adapter provides 3 axis IBIS, combining it with one of those Zeiss planars would be sweet.

        • Not happy to see a mount being killed off but it is understandable. I own 25 A mount lenses with half of them being Minolta branded and the price i got them for was a steal. Not to mention build quality of some of these that are almost 30 years old but are built to last another 50 years. Unfortunately same cannot be said for most newer sam lenses that i own

          A-mount is dead though

just because I know the system is dying

Is it "dead" or "dying", and and when was, or will this death occur ?!?!?
(if you only predict something as vague as a future death, you will always be right eventually)

I know "experts" were boldly and confidently predicting the death of the A-mount in the 1980's because no self respecting pro photographer would be caught dead using autofocus.

"Experts" where also boldly and confidently predicting that Sony would have to kill off A-mount soon after taking over the business nearly a decade ago…

It has been quite a slow death that lead to continuing sales and many new models since :p

It brings to mind an often used quote/misquote "The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated."

    • Not quite true. IQ aside, the construction quality is much better than the Canon/Nikon 50mm 1.8 cheapo plastic feel. It is also Optically Stabilised which both these factors in the higher price.

As for this lens on an A7, sure it will be in cropped mode at 10Mp but the images are still damn sharp with great bokeh (I know coz I use this combo). Only an extreme pixel peeper will be able to tell the difference with the Zeiss 55mm. And that's when they will pay the extra $800 price difference.

Canon 50mm f/1.8 is around $100 and is very plastic, but Nikon 50mm f/1.8 is very good build quality, tough plastic exterior with a metal mount, which might not feel as great as an all metal construction, but it works wonderfully well.

The Zeiss 55mm is an extraordinary lens. I actually would switch to Sony just for that lens, it's that good. I wish there were lenses of that quality for Nikon, but truth to be told, you're right, only a pixel peeper would realise, but we're all pixel peepers aren't we? :)

Sure using this on an A7 is great, but if you're only using the DX portion, you might as well just use an A6000 for smaller size, faster FPS and more resolution. I love the A7, but the fact that there are only 5 FE lenses available is encouraging me to hold out. That said, the five lenses that are out are great, especially that Zeiss 55mm, the Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 is disappointing though, f/2.8 prime in 2014, really!

The Nikon 50 1.8G is not too bad but costs more. The Nikon 50 1.8D is more plasticky than Canon's. I have both Canon and Nikon D 50mm and use them on my 6D and D7000.

I think you are missing the point of the A7. The A7 was designed for Full Frame shooters to have a mirrorless body to adapt any lens on it. I use the A7 to adapt mainly my EF lenses and old Leica glass (all are Full Frame lenses) via Metabones adapters. There are no other Full Frame body that allows you to do this. I got the SEL50f18 just to play with and for the faster native AF for portrait shots.

I'll shut up now… I've gone off topic to the OP. :)

        • haha, its alright to go off topic :) Definately agree with your view

          • So are you switching or holding out ?

          • One of the 5 great lenses isn't actually that great because it's a disappointing f/2.8 - Huh ?!?

This, and your other recent posts, in other Sony deals, always seem to gravitate towards the A7 series and "FE" lenses, even if those posts aren't directly related to it (such as this one).
I assume you have some anguish/concern/flip-flop regarding the system ?

I guess you shouldn't buy into the A7 system (if you haven't already) - it can only get worse if you do - hehehe

PS: I actually have seven different full frame E-mount lenses in front of me as I type this - so your count of "five" is a little outdated ;-)

  • Can sony a mount lens mount on a canon or nikon? Or these canon/nikon lenses can mount on a sony alpa camera straight? Sorry to be a noobe.. Still learning my lesson, thanks

    • +1

      I am generalizing, but :

      • Sony lenses WILL NOT mount on Canon or Nikon cameras.

      • Canon and Nikon lenses, and indeed almost any brand of lens, WILL mount on Sony E-mount cameras with an appropriate adapter. Depending on the adapter and lens combination you may or may not get features such as auto-focus. You may also see vignetting if you put a non-full-frame lens on a full-frame body.

  • A sony e lens will not go on a sony a mount camera right? And the same way an a mount lens will not go with a e mount, i am right, just looking to upgrade by sony a300 and buy a couple of good lenses to shoot my kids as the way they grow up, cheers

    • As a general rule;

      • Sony E-mount lenses WILL NOT mount on A-mount cameras.

      • Sony A-mount lenses WILL mount on E-mount cameras.
(Sony, and others, currently sell adapters for this purpose, the most recent, and expensive, of which is this one)

Thus the E-mount is more flexible if you wish to use a variety of lenses.

  • And what happens if we use a apac lens on a full frame? I know if we use a 50mm full frame lens on a apsc then it will be like 75mm

    • And what happens if we use a apac [sic] lens on a full frame?

I assume you mean an APS-C lens, and the answer is that it will generally work.
If you use an APS-C lens on a full frame camera, the default behaviour (for the Sony E-mount system this post refers to) is that it will automatically crop the image to avoid vignetting (darker image corners).
Depending on the settings, some lenses don't even need to to be cropped to avoid vignetting.

  • Need the 35 1.8 to be at this price :)

  • Videopro will do it for $187 delivered.

    • Are you using a code? Because they've got it for $195.80 now.

      • No just did an online chat with them and asked if they could match or beat. They then send you a link to make the purchase.
