    • Awesome! Let us know how it goes :)

  • Anyone got the KDL70W850B yet? It took me two panels and a replacement to get my Samsung sorted in the media room and now I'm looking to upgrade the 47" Bravia XBR in the lounge. Not sure if I can go through the pain of large panel with banding roulette.

Don't even consider it, that Sony is a piece of junk. Just go and look at it, the image quality is terrible. Do not believe the online reviews, see it for yourself, and read the AV forums. Not only are the colours washed out, the blacks are grey and amazingly the image clarity so bad it looks like the HDMI signal is actually an AV signal. There are also massive problems with the backlights on this model. Do not buy, even at the bargain price.

      • Thanks for the advice. I had a good read if the thread at AVS and it had me wary.

        • You can see the quality for yourself here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=la9G3bF6rYU)

          @TRENT86:

No you can't. You need to see it in real life, and it is rubbish. Easily the worst TV image quality wise at JBhifi and Costco. Maybe in isolation it looks alright, but when compared to other TVs around it, it was woeful. Its sponsored reviews like that, that Sony relies on the sell those pieces of junk.

      • What a load of rubbish.

First off everyone should disregard an opinion if someone bases it on a in store side by side comparison. The LG's and Samsung run a demo that can make any tv not running an equivalent one look crap.

Secondly AV forums users find problems with every set as the majority of the user base are obsessed with minor things.

This tv is Sony's mid range in the HD category and some argue better than the flagship 950 in certain aspects, is near impossible to be as bad as the reviews. All the AV forum people expectations are much higher since seeing OLED and 4k ranges and quite honestly some of them should stop being so stingy if they want the best picture quality.

        • -2

I would suggest you get out and smell the coffee. The TVs in Costco were all running the same HD demo loop, the TVs in Jbhifi were all running the same foxtel SD demo loop. The Sony looked equally crap on both loops. It was the worst TV in both stores, by a long way. It was so bad in Costco, that they actually had the TV turned off for much of the time (Im guess hoping that people would buy it without seeing how bad it was). You only need to spend 5 minutes researching this TV to know that is has major issues with banding and uneven picture. It is a bad product. You only need to look at it with your eyes to see how bad it is.

Not only this, but the screen is actually angled slightly towards the roof, which would annoy the shit out of me. I was a bee's dick from buying one of these TVs, but after researching them extensively and seeing them myself, I realised they are absolute junk. I am steering towards the Samsung 75 inch HD, which seems to be the best regular HD set on the market in terms of image quality.

        • @thorton82:

          I have.

Worst tv, you certainly must have the worst pair of eyes to put Hinese, LG and the other low brands ahead of it.

You probably one of those people who like the artificial colour Samsung produces over something like the Panasonic Plasma or OLED.

Yes the quality of picture is subjective thing, but your opinion is based on other peoples review who oddly enough are the AV forum minorities where negativity thrives.

        • @gamechanger:

I can tell you that every LG in both the stores was superior to this Sony. The 60 inch Sony was fine. The high end Hisense were also better. I don't base my opinion on what brands are better, I base it off which TV is better. This TV was going to replace a $7000 Pioneer Plasma. I also have Panasonic Plasma (60 inch), a 64 inch Samsung Plasma and a Samsung LED. The Samsung plasma, a 2013 Model, is the best TV, despite only costing $1500. The Pioneer plasma, despite being a decade old and 720p, has the best colour and blacks, and in some aspects is superior to the 60 inch Panasonic.

Your opinion appears to be based on nothing other than biased opinion referring to brands and assuming that a single TV's performance is based off your opinion of the brand. LG televisions used to be terrible, but I doubt you can buy a better TV than the 79inch UHD LG LED these days.

        • +1

@thorton82: The 850B series has been said to be the best sony has produced so I don't know where your coming from, the cnet reviews are all good too and like most TV'S you need to tweak some thing to make a perfect picture

        • @TRENT86:

Go look at one. The reviews are wrong, or might only apply to the 50, 55 and 60 inch screens, because the 70 inch screen is terrible. I am coming from the perspective of someone who is going to buy one. I am giving impartial advice based on experience, not on reviews or speculation. The 70 inch 850 is a flawed television. Why do you think they are practically giving them away for $2200?

        • @thorton82:

Is there even such a thing as high end Hisense? Good value for price, but I never heard of any tv expert buy one for the quality of picture.

And the key point in your post is "Samsung plasma best TV", sorry but I never heard anyone say that and given the price that wouldn't have been mid range even. From what I gather how you view picture quality is quite different from the norm or even picture lowers who calibrate themselves.

        • @thorton82:

You do realize that this model is coming to its end? And FYI this model costs only $2000 in the US, so hardly giving away when you consider the inflated prices we normally pay…

Its hard to take you seriously (1) Comparing in store without adjusting sets to same settings (2) You only looked the negative comments a minority- which I bet you don't understand half the tests they carried out which are not noticeable to the average user (3) Your personal take on picture quality seems to differ a fair bit from the norm, as the comparisons you given us pretty much tell us.

If you really giving an "impartial" view perhaps carry out some tests in store, rather than giving a view purely based on face value and a forum where a few users have posted the most critical reviews you will find on any tv.

        • @gamechanger:

Just go look at one instead of speaking rubbish.

        • @gamechanger:

Yeah Hisense make 75 inch UHD televisions that are better than most Sony TVs.

My Samsung Plasma is a great TV. Dark blacks, accurate colours, great resolution. The sole failing is that it has a persistent buzz. It is certainly a better TV than the 2012 Panasonic 60 inch plasma (except the Panasonic is silent).

        • @thorton82:

          I have….

And whats with comparing UHD with HD, its pointless. How about comparing Hisense UHD with Sony UHD.

Put simply I am yet to hear of a Hisense beat any mid range Sony.

        • @thorton82: You have no idea do you lol and the TV'S Will be back up to $3000 on Monday

        • @TRENT86:

I'm not too concerned about the blackest blacks etc, I just want a nice uniform panel which doesn't look like this: http://www.avsforum.com/forum/166-lcd-flat-panel-displays/15…

The Samsungs I had to swap three times had banding which became really apparent when watching night AFL matches, as the screen panned on the green grass it looked like clouds going over the ground.

        • @TRENT86: you can get the for $2399 anytime at Costco. And it's not like sales at jb and dick smith are unique, they are in every week. Astor having no idea, it really is a case of pot and kettle. You argument purely revolves around reading Internet reviews, which are likely sponsored. When you actually look at the thing, there is a big disparity. When you do some research, the AV forums show some big problems with the screen. But If you want to be a fool and buy one, go ahead, there is no reasoning with you.

        • @bxpressiv: You do realise that link you posted undermines your arguments because:
          1. You said AV forums were rubbish and full of complaining perfectionists
          2. The thread you posted shows banding on the televsion I am criticising, supporting one of my contentions

        • @thorton82: You don't realise I'm not arguing so:
          1. Chill out
          2. Read my whole three posts which if anything implies I give AVS forums consensus some merit
          3. re your second point, yes.

        • @thorton82:

          lol that's not even me….

Please do find a 70inch tv in this price range which blows this one totally? Every manufacturer has x % of problems in their tv. Sony is quite popular so its only normal that fair number of negative comments appear. Only a couple of people have had problems and if you look at the AV forum its only a couple who posted multiple times crying over every small thing.

The only real issue that seems to be wide spread is 3D, which may have been fixed with an software update.

For the price the TV is worth the 'risk' as you can get a replacement or using Australian consumer law to argue not fit for purpose etc..

        • @bxpressiv: Sorry, it looked like you where Trent. My mistake.

        • @gamechanger:

The LG is better for similar money.

        • Didn't buy either even though I had the green light from the wife, I'll look again after Christmas. What's the opposite of buyers remorse?

        • @thorton82: So + Member cost + price to drive there as there are stuff all stores

      • i saw it and think you have to concede that often it is surrounded by UHD models or other such higher end models with better display technology.
It is a Full HD 70" tv. Thats not going to stack up against an UHD. But for the price difference its a bargain.

        • The LG isn't UHD and its better.

At normal viewing distance with HD source material, I can barely see the difference between a UHD set and an HD set.

        • Comparing instore is impossible. The JB I went to it seemed anything over $3k which was UHD had a 4k or bluray source and the rest are SD TV. No idea if anything has been calibrated and the staff have NFI either. I said I was concerned about panel consistency and banding on larger screens and I was told that's why I need a 200hz TV. facepalm

        • @bxpressiv:

Exactly, the JB I went into all the TV's had different videos and to me it seems the UHD televisions where running the best video source as they probably want to sell more.

Also most stores are really bright which can affect how one views the picture.

  • Purchased the same 70"sony at grays for $1800. Went to JB to see whether they would price match, but to find that they had it not advertised for the $2291 but at $2990 less 15% or $2540. When challenged the salesman feigned surprise saying the price marked was wrong and that the $2291 was such a great deal it was for two days only.
What a ridiculous situation where the RRP is closer to $3500 marked down to $2990 but less 15% to $2540," but wait on sale for two days at $2290" which is nearly $500 dearer than a competitor.

  • Just contacted JB to check on where my TV was (I ordered online to be delivered as no stock in WA) and they said it was sitting in a SA store for some reason. Going to have to wait a couple of weeks for them to get it over here. Lucky I checked I guess.

    • Couple of weeks?

I ordered and they said 7-10 days, but done in store opposed to online. Not going to be very happy if its any longer than the 10 days I was told!
