      i don't think so
it seems to be grey import

    Taiwan based seller
    still a great price

The only android 'mini' phone that still has flagship specs. There's absolutely no phone in the <5" market better than the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. Only rival is iPhone 6 if you're willing to pay a few hundred more (even then it's debatable if the iPhone is better). The phone's probably faster than many >5" phablets. The phone has an insane battery time, http://www.gsmarena.com/battery-test.php3, destroys pretty much every phone on the market.

    • +1

I can attest to the battery, given I don't sit and watch videos on my phone but with a few hours music I'm getting a solid 2 days, with stamina (Suspends data when the phone screen is off) I get ~3.5 days.

      • Explain how? Apart from a higher resolution I don't see how you reached your uninformed conclusion? Camera/video/CPU/GPU/battery run laps around the dated M7. It's nice that you own an M7 but its quite deluded thinking that early 2013 vs late 2014 flagship specs are even comparable. The CPU/GPU for the next generation M8 is the same as the Z3 compact so how on earth does the M7 blow the Z3 compact out the water?

        • @eneloop: Did you even read the link above that rates battery life for smartphones? They aren't even close. UI for the Xperia is very similar to stock android.. The HTC has a better build quality and screen but how does that make the phone a better purchase with its outdated specs? 720p is enough for me as it's one of the reasons why the Z3C has a fantastic battery life. The Xperia Z3C still has stereo speakers too however so I wouldn't say you're missing out on a great deal.

I looked at your previous posts and realize you consistently receive 10+ negs on your posts so I won't respond to your trolling.

        • M7 certainly doesn't have as good specs that is for sure. Camera and battery life are better on the Sony.
Everything else though he probably has a point… despite the fact that he's most likely trolling.
The UI on the Sony isn't the best, I use the Z1C at the moment and I miss HTC sense. The screen on the Z1C is also quite bad with very washed out colours. (Not sure if fixed on the Z3C)
I also miss the sharpness of 1080P.

        • -7

          @clse945111:
I used the Z3 C and went back to my HTC One. I didn't like the square edges and the call quality and speakers were better in my opinion on the M7. Sense 6 is the best UI of any phone right now. No lag and with its simple colours it's so easy to navigate. The battery life was good but not by much and the camera had better shots on the Z3 if you wanted to blow it up

        • +2

@eneloop: I've had my M7 for about a year, usually have to bring a charger to work.

        • @Shaun1: I hear that, it's the only thing I hate about my m7.

      • I'll give you software, build, speakers and screen. and price. but z3 compact is very good.

I have been scoping this phone out for a month now and I Would not buy from them. These phones have issues - glass cracking from heat / recording 4k video and minor drops even on carpet. Getting warranty coverage from these kind of sellers would be a nightmare. Stick to AU stock or go with a reputable importer like Kogan.

Sony phones have been having the screen cracking problems since the Xperia Z. I think if you look after your phone and put a decent case on it, you should never have a problem. Don't know why you would want to record in 4k anyway, just a gimmick that looks good on a spec sheet. Sony phones are built to last so I doubt you would have any problems.

      Kogan, a reputable seller..?

      • +3

By that I mean at least there is a history of them doing Warranties and some people having success with them on OZB and they are an Australian company with a face even if they import their goods. More reputable than a random EBay seller i don't know about.

Also note that there have been buyers in the UK and Germany where Sony has replaced cracked glass under warranty and admitted there is a design flaw. Its cracking even without dropping the phone for a few people. What will you do if this happens ? Ship phone back to Taiwan? Some dodgy sellers may even claim its your fault cause you dropped it, there is no way to prove they are just trying to get out of their warranty obligations.

      • -1

Its a gimmick? its a feature on the phone that causes heat and problems - please make excuses for Sony, if it causes issues then why include it on the phone as a feature?

        • +1

That's what 'gimmick' means, a feature.

Anyway I always have a laugh at these 'issues', clear denial that big butts did the cracking from the tight pocket. But there you go at least it's consistent with cracking "without dropping the phone".

I once read a thread on whirlpool about some guy who said his GS4 was refused repair from 'spontaneous' breakdown, turns out he dropped it in the toilet LOL.

Digressing, you search specifically for problems on the net, you're gonna find all sorts of things.

      • +2

Just my opinion, but I really hate putting a case on a nice looking phone.

      • +1

I know I'm posting a lot here in what sounds like defending Sony, but if you look in that same thread there is another example where a user had a similar crack and it was repaired by Sony: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56781737&post…

In the case you link, the guy is apparently taking them to court so in this case I'd blame the retailer, not Sony.

I have a Sony phone, and I really like it. I think it would be a bit sad if people were put off Sony because of some (quite unusual) problems, especially when Sony has been doing repairs on the 'self-cracking' screens. Sony is probably the single Android manufacturer most supportive of the developer community so I would like to see them do well when it is deserved. (Back when they were denying a problem, they deserved hell for it)

    • +4

Yep this is absolutely true. I work at a phone store and have had returns over the random cracking stemming all the way back to the z1. Its from video recording/letting the phone get too hot. Its an actual joke that sony hasn't recognised or fixed this issue for its users. I personally have a z2 that is Australian stock and they still don't care.

      • +3

I think the waterproofing gaskets that are used in the design is also what contributes to the excess build up of heat and causing the device to crack the display.

    • I have an Xperia Z2, that I've recorded plenty of 4K with and dropped on the carpet a couple times from about 1.5 metres by accident, anyway the glass backs are fairly cheap and fairly easy to replace.

      • True the backs/screens are pretty easy to replace but we shouldn't have to do it in the first place because of a flawed design. Also it removes the best feature of the phone the waterproofing! I miss having no fear around pools haha

    • +3

Yeah, I have sympathy for people for whom the screens are cracking due to heat problems, while charging, or indeed just in the pocket.
'It fell of the chair onto the floor and cracked' no so much.

Some of the models of Sony have indeed had cracking problems (as ShamelessBargains mentioned). However, Sony's response has varied over time.
Initially, they were denying any problems. Then there was the 'Sweden, fixed under warranty' as mentioned by Sylon below.
We also have: http://www.xperiablog.net/2013/11/08/sony-will-repair-certai… and http://www.nextpowerup.com/news/5204/own-an-xperia-z-with-a-… where it seems Sony is fixing cracked screens with the cracking pattern associated with the heating and other such problems.

After the involvement of a 'consumer watchdog' TV program in the UK Sony admitted a problem there: http://www.xperiablog.net/2014/05/30/bbcs-watchdog-investiga…
If an online retailer - or indeed the manufacturer - isn't living up to their warranty obligations then it is time to contact the consumer affairs/consumer advocate in your state (e.g. Consumer Affairs Victoria in Vic). Manufacturers can say "it isn't covered under warranty" all they would like, but ultimately they don't get to make the decision. There are statutory warranties in Australia and companies are legally obliged to adhere to them.

Whether you can, in practice, get an Ebay seller to adhere is another matter, so give thought to where you buy it and how accountable they can be, but don't just write of an entire phone model because some people have been having problems: particularly when the complaints are "It should survive a fall from X height". If my phone falls of a stool onto a hardwood floor and cracks then it is perfectly reasonable for me to be disappointed, but it is silly for me to be blaming the phone manufacturer.

(Note: I have my Nexus 5 in for repair for a broken screen after I dropped it the other day, and I have replaced the screen on an Xperia Z myself after walking into a table with it in my pocket).

    • Other phones with 4K recording also generate quite a bit of heat, except that they all impose 5 minute timers to prevent auto shutdown of the camera app, whilst the Sony Phones don't pose this limit, and continue recording until it actually overheats and shuts down the camera application.

Is there anyone with this mobile or someone that had the chance to try this mobile?

My main concern is the screen dimension: apparently it is just slightlysmaller that it's competitors but, once considered the space taken for the Android function buttons, it probably gets "small".

I have a pallet at the moment, I am definitely attracted by this model but I haven't had the chance to see and try it…

    • Screen size is perfect for me. I came from Moto G 4G (1st gen) and Nexus 4. Didn't want a huge sized phone.
Go into a store and check it out.

    • I have a Z1 compact and love the size of it.
I went from an iPhone 4 to it as I don't like the bigger phones.
Still haven't mastered Android after being on iOS for ever though I'm getting better.

      • +1

I'm still stuck on an iPhone 4… ~4.7" seems the optimal size for one handed use I reckon.

        • Depends on the phone. Although a lot of phone have same size screens the overall size varies a lot.
Eg, Samsung note 4 has a bigger screen than the iPhone 6 plus but it is a smaller overall size.
I have a Sony Z 5 inch and it is perfectly fine one handed.

    • +4

I've bought this phone. To be honest, the android function buttons are not really an issue at all, you need to look at the design of the phone. It's essentially the size of the iPhone 5/5s with a 4.6" screen, it's a beautiful phone. It's also really easy to hold, isn't slippery at all and very usable with one hand.

I've been a long time iPhone user, just sold my 5S and to be honest, I'm really happy with the phone. Hope this helps!

      • It certainly helps, thanks! It is not the functionality of the Android buttons that gives me headache, it is more the space taken by them that would reduce the actual screen size down to 4.2 \ 4.3 inches.

Will definitely go to see it in a shop!

    • +1

Go to any local Telstra or Optus shop. They all have it on display.

    • I've seen this on display at JB Hi-Fi stores… working models. Pop in and try out.

  • • 12 Months Australian Store Warranty
Buyers can return the product to our Sydney location for warranty servicing as this phone is foreign stock. The warranty repair will be undertaken by Sony and not third party individuals.

    • +1

Problem is, Sony won't necessarily repair the cracking issue and dismiss it as physical damage (even though no fall or actual trauma has occurred) plus they refuse to acknowledge it (has been going since for 3 generations now).

Looks good on paper yes, but don't need the headache.

Plus the phone isn't that readily available or hugly advertised yet so it's worrying how many reports of this issue has risen.

      • How many reports have risen? Seriously, this is one of the problems with conversations on the internet about issues like this. There was plenty of talk about the 'iPhone bending' problem but according to Apple only nine people Australia-wide have had the problem. I swear that with the Xperia Z1 cracking issue I saw the some photos time and time again.
That isn't to say that there isn't a problem: there is, and that was raised by the UK Consumer Watchdog program, but word is that Sony has been repairing some types of cracks: http://www.nextpowerup.com/news/5204/own-an-xperia-z-with-a-…

Basically, some unknown number of people have reported that their screens have cracked under normal-use conditions (e.g. video recording, charging, etc). Sony has been repairing some forms of cracks (finally; they took their sweet time, there is no denying) and those are the forms of cracks we're talking about under those normal conditions: not shattering.
It is a gamble in that it is possible you could be unlucky enough to have your screen crack and go to Sony, and you could be really unlucky and have Sony refuse you and then you have to take it to the consumer watchdog, but right now there is no reason to believe that it would be one person Australia-wide in that situation, rather than dozens or hundreds.

  • $529 @ Kogan
    $600 @ Telstra
    $644 @ JB Hifi

    • +1

$600 at Telstra seems like a good price with is it 2 year warranty now?

    • -4

Telstra won't sell you $600 outright (was told this by the telstra rep in the store), JB Hifi will price match it though

      • +2

Yes they will. They even advertise it. I know plenty of friends that have bought phones outright from Telstra.

      • +1

I went to a Telstra shop and it was listed for $600 outright.

      • +2

I bought mine outright from the Telstra store for $600.

It's $10 cheaper from DWI with coupon code 30OFFPAYPAL if anyone is interested. http://www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/astore/Sony-Xperia-Z3-Co…

    • +2

Not really. DWI charges 2% PayPal fee. Make it few cents cheaper at the end. This is eBay so you can get 2% cashback from CashRewards and make it $10 approx. cheaper than DWI. Sometimes world works the other way round when you get to the final equation. ;)

      • Forgot about the CashRewards yet again. Thanks for that :)

  • Please add 2% cashback from CashRewards in case anyone rushing through check out and forgot about it. Thanks.

  • I picked this phone up last week.
    Great unit so far.

Coming from a iPhone 4S so great to be back on android after a 2 year hiatus.

Havent tested it too much yet but it sure packs a punch for its tiny size.
    Plenty of reviews online,
let me know if anyone has any questions

  • Great phone especially for the price. Got it for $545 on eBay after selling my iPhone 5S. Screen size is perfect in my opinion, point of an inch smaller than the iPhone 6.

    • +2

I'm sure if Sony allocated a $1000 budget, they could alleviate the issue and then some

  • +9

This is a good price, but I would still buy it locally. This is the best phone I have ever owned! Battery life is amazing! Imagine… I no longer stress about battery life, or run apps to try and squeeze more juice, or have to charge at work just so I can get through a full day. I charge once every couple of days now! Another thing not often mentioned is the Audio is also top notch with native FLAC support - music sounds amazing. Sony have really done something special here. I fully endorse this phone for those who don't want to carry around a surfboard in their pocket! Even their mods to the Android interface are bearable, and all Sony apps can be removed if you want. Well done Sony!

  • Man I'd love to get this or the Xperia Z1 compact.

  • +1

Just make sure it's the D5833 variant as it works best on the LTE bands we use here in Aus. There some discussion on this topic here: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2309951

    • It does appear to be the D5833 because it says LTE 700 is supported.

    • LTE in Taiwan is pretty much the same as here with more frequencies.
It will at least have 700, 900, 1800 and 2600… which covers most LTE here except Optus TDD.

  • -1

Lots places have this phone for around $499 when it comes to imported, don't know where their $699 price came from considering it's only $644 for Aus version

    • +1

      $600 at Telstra shops.

    • $499 with $10-$30 shipping fee, without $10 cashback from Cash Rewards and eBay/PayPal buyer protection? No thanks, this is a much better deal.

  • Ive received this 10% off coupond from ebay.com.au would it work with tjos deal? Also im using S3 now. worth the upgrade?

    • Definitely from what I've read.

    • If you're S3 is trucking along well in terms of battery life and general usage I wouldn't feel the need to upgrade. But the Z3 Compact is definitely a good option if you want to keep a similar screen size.

  • Excellent phone. I bought one shortly after it came out for around $630. Shortly after that it dropped from $700 to $600 at Optus and Telstra. Ah well.

  • -1

Z2 has so many screens self cracking issues, same applies to z3 and z3c.

I would avoid them and pay a bit more for LG G3. Apart from battery not lasting as long, and no waterproof, everything else is better

  • Got this on a plan with Optus 2 weeks ago. Always had an iPhone so excited for the freedom as a heavy user. Still in the transition process, but seems pretty beautiful…

  • If you can get JB hifi gift vouchers at 5 percent off and if the Telstra store has this for $599, you can do what I did when I got my Z1… Price match/price beat!

    • How do you get 5% off vouchers?

      • Certain clubs and memberships offer them, kind of like entertainment book e.g. Law Society. You might even find your workplace or union offer them too. There's also an app called Cash Back which you can buy them but you pay a fee.

  • -2

Just read the specs in the link 2GB Ram. How come a sony Z3 is running with only 2GB Ram while my Z2 is having 3Gb Ram?

    • It's the Z3C. A compact version of the Z3. The base Z3 has 3gb ram

  • I am actually looking to get this phone and it is going to be my first android smartphone but I am hesitant in dropping the money.

Along with the waterproofing and glass cracking issues on this unit I am worried that I am better off getting the bigger Z3 for the 3GB of RAM as opposed to the 2GB of RAM on this.
Should I be getting the Z3 instead of the Z3C as it has more RAM for the demands of apps?

        You're a champ!
This is exactly what I have been trying to track down for the past week, was going to start my own poll on it to see what the reality was.
Interestingly it looks as though (per usual) the vocal minority with problems are making more noise than the ones not.

I think I am sold on the Z3C then.
I popped into the Telstra shop to get more info about the phones.
Both the Z3C and the Z3 come with 2 years warranty if you buy it outright from Telstra.
The Z3C is $600 outright and the Z3 is $816 for those wanting to know.

      • +1

32% cracked back glass is a high rate. Even 20% cracking front screen glass is also high. Have a look at no, it cracked on its own

Those figures proves there's an issue with the Z series.

Buy at your own risks. Get a local deal instead. But wait Sony doesn't admit the fault, so what if you got warranty? Do you want to go thru the troubles getting it replaced and possibly gm have it cracked yet again?

        • +3

Even 1% failure rate is too high for a phone which only came out a month ago.

But these figures are not representative of all the z3c phones, as most people with perfectly working phones will not actively write on the forum about a product fault, while most people with a fault will seek for help. The only information you can extract from the poll is around 160 people had screen cracks developing on its own. This number seems high though.

  • Love to see how the Australian Consumer Law will work with these issues ;)
