ugh, if only these things had a decent amount of eMMC space in them so you could put normal windows on them and use them as cheap ultrabooks :(

    • +2

Search Amazon for HP Stream 11, 13 etc.

      • This Chromebook has a way better screen (FHD) than the HP Streams, though. Its a pity they are now using eMMC instead of SSD's which can be easily upgraded.

Dell will be offering the Inspiron 15 ( 1366x768 screen, 4GB RAM, Celeron, 500GB hard drive, Windows 8.1)over Black Friday for USD 189.99

You beat me to it. I bought this few days ago and Amazon offered price match refund. Also note you get 1TB worth Google Drive free for 2 years (worth $240) and also free shipping if you combine with this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/170818 . (American Express purchase)

better resolution than my MBA at a fraction of the cost…

    • If resolution was the be-all and end-all of computing you'd have a point but there are lots of things this thing can't do that your MBA can.

      • +1

i know. just saying its great value

        • -1

It's not when comparing other specs and functionality.

        • +5

          @gokhanh: It's clearly great value mate…

If you install linux (either with crouton or chrubuntu) you'll be able to play Dota 2 (on a smaller resolution and on low settings) on this bad boy. Lots of other less graphically demanding games available for linux through steam as well.

I would recommend this laptop to someone who already had a powerful desktop they were happy with, who needed a cheaper portable computer.

  • The AMEX free shipping doesn't work with it, as there's no standard shipping option (at least for me)

  • Can anyone please tell me if this one is the same thing or different one:
    http://www.wireless1.com.au/laptops/laptop-type/ultrabooks/t…

    • Its a lower res screen. Not quite the same model.

    • That's the 1st model, this is the 2nd model.

  • +2

Great deal. Just bought one after watching it for a few weeks and waiting for their "Black Friday" sales. I tried to get the AMEX free shipping but it wouldn't appear. Just spent 10 minutes with the online chat dude and shipping was waived.

It helped that I was able to give the promotion's website address:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=pe_1540190_1270065…

Just in case anyone else has trouble.

    • I had to do the exact same thing few days ago when i bought it. It was waived.

eh, my chromebook is just gathering dust. got sick of using it and bought a windows laptop

    • got sick of using it

      Explain!?

      • +1

They're not exactly the most useful devices when there's no internet connection around. Having limited storage doesn't help this.

      • +1

I bought it for uni. Sometimes I would open it for a lecture, and the wifi screwed up, so i couldnt log in..couldnt use it! or the screen would just be black. chrome os is too far from perfect. if it ran ubuntu instead, it would be fine, though

  • Anyone using a Chromebook? I would like to buy one of them but am to scared because of the ridiculous amount of storage.

    • +2

I'm currently using one (without running Linux on it which I haven't done) its only great for browsing and without an internet connection there's not much you can do with it. My biggest issue with it is the

      1) Offline word processing can only be done through google docs, which is pretty limited
      2) codecs aren't really available so some videos can't be played (my Bravia can play more)

I purchased it to be my main computer, but for me right now it feels like a large android pad with an attached keyboard but less apps.

    • The storage on the computer is really a temp area, google drive is your place for your files and whatnot.

      • tbh I don't even use google drive with mine, for small files like doc/pdf are stored on the chromebook for TV shows/movies it's stored on my external hard drive which is these days permanantly attached

  • I want the new acer720 chromebook 4gb ram but they dont seem to ship this to australia….

  • are chromebook any good?

wouldn't a real laptop be better?

u can put real programs..not like cloud etc..

what use cases are chromebook good for?

    • +1

Great for people(parents/grandparents) who only use the computer for email, web browsing, facebook, youtube. A lot of people don't use real programs which is why I guess Google made chromebooks. It's simple,

At home, you're likely to have internet connected 99% of the time. Having an internet connection isn't that big of a problem. Not sure what most people would do if their Mac or Windows laptop didn't have an internet connection. More and more [apps are able to be used offline] (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/collection/offli…)

For the price compared to windows laptops, you'd have a much nicer experience with a ssd and full hd display.

      • But if you want chrome box experience

All you need to do install chrome browser on a normal laptop..

That is essentially what chromebook is..

Just a browser to launch cloud based apps…

        ==

if only email, web browsing, facebook, youtube
        just get a cheap tablet?

        • All you need to do install chrome browser on a normal laptop..

A normal laptop of this price does not have a ssd or full HD display

Just a browser to launch cloud based apps…

There are quite a few apps you can use offline.

if only email, web browsing, facebook, youtube
          just get a cheap tablet?

Desktop browsers > mobile browsers any day. After a while, typing on a tablet would be a lot more tiresome than using a keyboard.

Chromebooks aren't for everyone, and I'd never get one as my main computer, but you get a much better web experience for the price.

        • @ozhunter:

but with tablet you get a better touch experience..which outweighs keyboard experience any day…
cos we consume stuff e.g read books, watch movies, play music more than we type..

Try lying on your bed, using this…

If u need a keyboard just get a keyboard addon for tablet..

but u get the freedom of choose to have the keyboard or not…

Also getting a tablet has a bigger app store than the chrome…

          ===
you wouldn't be doing real work on these devices anyway..so I doubt I would be typing all day..
and if u were, u can get keyboard addon for tablet…

Without constant internet connection, these devices just aren't very good..

Without internet on tablet there's still alot of stuff I can do with it..
I can read, listen to music, watch movies, play games..

          With the chromebook,
it's not very nice experience without internet..

        • @tyler.durden:

Even though your ignorance is obvious, I'll reply

but with tablet you get a better touch experience..which outweighs keyboard experience any day… cos we consume stuff e.g read books, watch movies, play music more than we type..

Try lying on your bed, using this…

Yea the screen is smaller and I have to hold it

Do we? Did you know you can do all that on a chromebook without internet? It's a much better experience using a keyboard to type when browsing the internet.

If u need a keyboard just get a keyboard addon for tablet..

Should I just get a stand add on as well so I can don't have to hold the tablet with both hands? Easier to carry a laptop, than to carry the tablet, keyboard and stand separately

Also getting a tablet has a bigger app store than the chrome…

Why do people get windows phones/tablets at all, ios and android have many more apps :s

Without internet on tablet there's still alot of stuff I can do with it..
I can read, listen to music, watch movies, play games..

You can do the exact same things on a chromebook without internet.

What tablet and keyboard would you recommend for around this price? You probably didn't notice, but this is cheaper than a lot of tablets.

        also you can install this
if u want chrome book experience…

        http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os

So what's the point of almost $300 for this
when you can get a laptop about 300 to 400 dollars

But you will be able to install real programs
        -e.g office

  • Chromebook in Singapore or Seoul would be perfect as these 2 cities are almost totally wired up with top notch broadband connection .

    • yes but u also need free wifi as well…

also u are trusting all your data is secure through these public wifi hot spot is dangerous

I still don't see what is the big deal about these

      ==
If I want real work done, I get laptop, which lets u install programs

if I want fun, multimedia, then I get ipad/tablet..

  • Seems to be back up to full-price now. Damn.

    • It still says USD $279.

      • +1

Hmmm weird. It says AU$389.99 for me, which is around US$333.25.

  • expired. too slow.

  • Worth noting you can still get the previous model for $230 AUD
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N99FV76/ref=s9_hps_bw_g1…

    • Nvm to late…

  • +1

I have this chromebook running ChromeOS and Ubuntu and its brilliant, let me know if you have any questions.
I use steamstream to monitor games from my desktop while I'm on the couch and I can play a few point and click games fine when I'm out in a hotel or whatever.

  • It's back again, Amazon must have got more stock in

    • Could not add to cart, now back at $388.88

  • What are the touchpads like on Chromebooks? Are the gestures similar to Macbooks?

I love the huge touchpad and 2-finger scrolling on my MBA - got it for this alone. After years of using a few different Windows laptops so fed up with the horrible small unresponsive plastic touchpads, I always ended up toting a wireless mouse with me if I had to do any work.

  • To all those sceptics with Chromebooks - They also come with free inbuilt antivirus. That and the free storage on offer basically gives you an absolute bargain.

I bought one of these over in the US a couple of months ago. Yes it's horses for courses. If, like me you only use it for email, web browsing and the odd movie to watch, you can not go wrong. I challenge anyone to find a better device.

There are a multitude of off line apps that you can use for documents etc. Admittedly, it is a learning curve but there are plenty of people using these very happily.

    • -2

but if u are going to do this

email, web browsing and the odd movie to watch, you can not go wrong

why not just get a tablet?
