In the early hours of Sunday, 3rd December 1854 - 160 years ago today - police and soldiers marched on a group of miners camped in a hastily erected fortress at Bakery Hill, Victoria. The fight was quick and the government forces were brutal in their attack. At least 27 people were killed, most from the miners' side.
The Battle of the Eureka Stockade has since become one of the most important events in the history of democracy in Australia.
