  • Got this too. Trying to figure out if this model has 4GX? Is it being discounted cos it doesn't?

    • read the fine print:

      "Things you need to know

THE TELSTRA MOBILE NETWORK OFFERS 4GX IN SELECTED AREAS OF PERTH, SYDNEY, MELBOURNE, DARWIN, ADELAIDE, BRISBANE, HOBART, AND SELECTED REGIONAL AREAS AND IS PROGRESSIVELY ROLLING OUT TO MORE PLACES. IN OTHER COVERAGE AREAS AROUND AUSTRALIA YOU’LL AUTOMATICALLY SWITCH TO OUR FASTEST AVAILABLE 4G, WHICH IS OFFERED IN ALL CAPITAL CBDS AND ASSOCIATED AIRPORTS, MANY SURROUNDING SUBURBAN AREAS AND IN OVER 300 REGIONAL AREAS, OR OUR 3G. CHECK COVERAGE AT telstra.com/coverage."

      • +2

So does this device support 4GX or not?

        • +4

          Whirlpool says yes

it operates on the 700 MHz (Band 28) network

          http://zte.com.au/telstra/MF910.htm

          LTE 700, 900, 1800, 2100, 2600 MHz
          UMTS 850, 900, 2100 MHz

        • @Thrift:
          CATAGORY 6 SUPPORTED ALSO?

        • @rong: You wish!

        • @rong:

Looks like it's only category 4 - the quoted speeds were "up to 150 Mbps download".

    • That's Telstra for you.

They also sell such modems - through different resellers, who tell you VERBALLY how much data Telstra included with a modem you buy from them, wile another vendor sells the same modem, claiming it includes more or less data. Buyer can NEVER know, since it's too much bother for Telstra to EITHER stick a label on each modem OR put the data included into the docket-text, so you're sure.
Consider what happens if the vendor says "5 GB" but got it wrong. it was REALLY, say, 1 GB, & you use 5 GB… YOU PAY.

I just noticed a Telstra charge of $25.05 for just 12.53 MB total usage!!!

Telstra - one of AU's many "poverty trap" vendors, IMO.

      • Clarification: When it write "such modems" I mean external modems, eg, USB, WiFi, etc., not this particular model.

        • For Android, after 4.3, (maybe….,) you can set phone treat a WiFi network as mobile network.
In setting - data usage - network restricting(or something like that).

  • +8

Good deal. Word of warning to iOs users though. As your phone will be connected to a Wifi network it might automatically backup all your phone data when plugged in. Had a mate connect to mine on a camping trip and used up about 2.2GB of data in a couple of nights.

    • +3

Good tip, I believe that applies to other platforms too as they simply think that it's an unmetered connection.

    • +1

This would apply to any device that automatically performs a backup, update etc when connected to wifi.

      • I haven't tested with a wifi modem but if you share your internet from one android to another it knows its still mobile data and doesn't do updates / etc..

        • +1

You can get apps that block things on certain wifi networks (you blacklist them).

        • How would it do that? I found the opposite to be true when I tethered a tablet to my phone via Wifi hotspot. Both Android.

        • +3

          @team teri:
I think android looks for a particular string in the SSID and if it has it (AndroidAP or AP or something) it will mark it as a mobile device (not good if you change the SSID obviously).

Otherwise to set it manually on 4.4.4:
Settings —> data usage —> menu button —> mobile hotspots and tick the saved networks that are hotspots.

    • so how do i prevent my iphone backing up while connected to it?

  • +10

If using Windows 8/8.1 you should make your pocket wifi connection metered so that Windows knows not to download unnecessary updates or sync through onedrive.

Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.)

Tap or click Network, and then tap or click Connections.

Tap or click the connection you want to change, and then, under Data usage, turn Set as a metered connection on or off.

  • +3

Is it unlocked? Or there is fee to unlock it? Anybody knows?

    • delete wrong model

  • +1

Yes I would like to know this too. @bagman might know if you message him?

  • Is this a ZTE MF910? if so should cover LTE 700MHz and 2600MHz.

  • +5

Great. Now I can use all those Telstra SIM cards.

  • I'd have to assume this is the new model. Otherwise I'll probably send it back.

    • Is the MF910 the 'new model'?

      • I think so. Been around since august according to Whirlpool

      • @ Mcfly -yep the old model was MF91

(the quality has dropped on this one tho- guess they only last a couple of years due to battery.)

  • Anyone tried to get it at the T Shop directly? Or through Online only?

  • "Offer is only available to customers who received an SMS from Telstra and redeem the offer online."

Can they tell? Are you on a list?

    • Just did an order and I only agreed to pay $59 so if they cancel the order they cancel the order, but I doubt it.

I have a Dovado, which has been super reliable but it will be nice to have a device with a battery to use around the place.

    • After posting, I reported this as a targeted offer but was given the all clear.

I don't think they'll be able to tell whether you got the sms or not, will they?

  • +1

Ummmed and ahhhed and finally just put through an order

See how we go, looks like able to unlock as well which will come in handy

    • I'm still ummming and ahhhing.. I really don't have a use for it. 200GB home data, WiFi at work and the brief commute is not worth buying this for.. [first world problems I guess]

    • personally, i bought this to replace mine 3G unit and this is a good price for a 4G unit.

  • got this offer too.
can it be unlocked for free?

wonder if i can use this as a portable charger too

    • 2nd that. be nice if its unlocked upright.

      • Looking at its shape I think it's meant to lay flat.

  • Does anybody know about the PACK of Data?
Could i change for 2gb later if i want?

    thanks

    • You want 2GB instead of 3GB?

    • +1

      This is a one off purchase, I don't think it's a 3gb plan, if that's what you're thinking.

After the 30 days I assume you recharge with as much or as little data as you need.

  • +2

I ordered one. Did try going into the Telstra shop on George st Sydney but they couldn't match the offer

  • For those who have ordered, is there a delivery charge on top of the $59?

    • +1

I've just gone through the steps: Delivery Cost: FREE

I had assumed it's free because everything I've seen that Telstra sell online has free delivery

      • Awesome.

Just placed an order so I hope it doesn't get ozbargained.

  • I ordered one within a few minutes of getting the SMS. Emailed to say they are out of stock

  • Is there any good mobile data plans tho, as the pre-paid ones seem to be going up in price

  • LTE? I'll take it - thanks OP :-)

  • Good to see that Optus users can take advantage of this modem as well on the 700, 1800, 2100 and 2600 lte bands.

Vodafone users as well but only on the 1800 band for the moment before they head to the 850 lte band.

    • This doesn't support 850 MHz LTE. Neither do VF's 4G modems!

  • Is this out of stock ?

    • I placed my order about an hour ago, my cc got charged and I recieved a confirmation email as well.

    • received a text after ordering saying 'your Telstra mobile order has been stopped. please call us on 1800 096 566 for more information'. It seems like they are not honouring these orders.

      • Your ID check would have failed. You will have to go to a store and verify your ID and then your order will be processed. This happens in most cases with your 1st order with Telstra Online shop.

  • I ordered one just then without any issues. Got confirmation email too.

  • Got one too. Thanks.
Although I just bought oldest version of Telstra 4G Pocket Wifi at $59 as well just 2 weeks ago.

  • What's diff compared to http://www.dicksmith.com.au/networking-wireless/telstra-pre-…? $49 for 4G wifi pocket, huawei E5372T

    • +1

      Doesn't do Telstras 4GX 700Mhz lte.

      Works on 800, 900, 1800, 2100 and 2600Mhz lte bands only.

    • +1

      Also:

      Supports 5 devices vs 10
Doesnt seem to include data vs 3GB

  • +1

Bought one yesterday. Just got an email saying its out of stock and it will be fulfilled as soon as its back in stock!

Wonder how long this would take

    • In the same boat.

  • I got the SMS saying order has been stopped like someone else mentioned.
    No email though…

    • "stopped" sounds like either your ID check failed, as mentioned above, or your payment source failed. Several other orders have gone through to being confirmed.

      • Yeah on the phone with them now. Most likely id check…

        • +1

Confirmed its id check. Will need to visit store.

        • @muzzy1907:

Glad to hear it wasn't cancelled or anything.

        • I actually got a cancellation email :(

  • +1

Got one thanks… upgraded from the previous E5372T model.

I use this when travelling overseas, especially in the USA. Stick in a GlobalGig sim-card, and you get 5GB data on roaming for $29 a month! Plus your family and friends can connect to it too, as it can have 10 simultaneous connections. If your hotel has free WiFi and limits one device connection, then you can connect this device to the hotel WiFi, and everyone can connect to this device!

When not travelling, I change plan to 1GB for $9 a month and use it with my Note 8.0 WiFi tablet at work.

You only get 3G connection with Globagig, in Australia and overseas.

  • Great deal! thanks OP!!!

  • is this the same as the above offer?
    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/networking-wireless/telstra-pre-…

    $109? vs $59

    • Sadly no.

That's the Netgear wifi Ultimate version.

The one on offer is the ZTE wifi Plus.

      • +1

Not sure where you got your info from (?) but from DS's website the only difference I see is that deal is offering 5gb of data instead of 3gb.

There's is called Ultimate, this one is called Plus.

        • +2

I thought that they were two different modems, one made by ZTE (MF910) and the other by Netgear (Aircard 785S).

This is what it shows on the Telstra site https://www.telstra.com.au/broadband/mobile-broadband/prepai…

        • @Rambler:

Ah ok thanks for that. I hadn't seen that Telstra page before.

From the Pic on DS's site it looked the same and I found nothing in the specs to tell them apart!

        • @Rambler:

thanks for that, looks like they are 2 different devices.

        • The Ultimate is a Netgear AirCard 785S
          http://www.netgear.com.au/home/products/mobile-broadband/hot…

          Netgear states:

          4G LTE: 700/900/1800/2100/2600 MHz, 2x2 MIMO
          3G HSPA+: 850/2100 MHz

The Plus is a ZTE MF910
          http://zte.com.au/telstra/MF910.htm

          ZTE states:

          4G LTE 700, 900, 1800, 2100, 2600 MHz up to 150Mbps download
          3G UMTS 850, 900, 2100 MHz up to 42Mbps download
          2G GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz up to 384Kbps download

  • Got an email from T stating no stock available and they will ship it when they get the next stock :-(

  • +2

Ordered yesterday morning 8.30am delivered today already (SA)
    Thanks OP

  • +2

    Only just got shipping notice

Seems they sending them out via startrack

guess one of the lucky ones that ordered before the out of stock notice

  • +2

Ordered at lunch yesterday arrived this morning. Surprised as others mentioned or was out of stock.

    • Ordered around the same time too, however received a 'out of stock email'. 3 hours later, received another email stating stock has been replenished and its being processed for delivery.

Received it this afternoon from the post office, as I wasn't home; seems the StarTrack delivery guy had came by at around lunchtime.

  • +3

Good to hear people are getting them delivered already.

The offer is running until 31st December but it does say "while stocks last".

    For reference, Bagman has advised:

he hasn't ever unlocked this model, but can get the codes for $11.

Contact him if you guys are interested in unlocking the device (assuming it's locked that is).

Perhaps those who have received theirs can report back if 'other' Sims work?

    • Mine come locked.

    • No need. Call Telstra to get this unlocked for free.

      • Even better!

      • I tried to get it unlocked, said it would cost me $150 to get it done.

        • Called Telstra and ask nicely, they said $100 for unlock fee.
Ask my friend who is current customer with Telstra to call, also got same response.
Seems too many people asking for unlock this model recently since the sale?

So I asked Bagman, got unlock code for $11 and it works :)

        • +1

          @dione:
So what I did was said that I'm planning on going overseas, and will need the unlock code. The Telstra guy was more then willing to oblige.

        • it would cost me $150 to get it done.

          $150?!
That CSR should quit Telstra and go into stand up comedy!

        • @zonder:

I did said that I need to go for business trip the very next day and need to use the device.
My colleague also said the same thing.

I think it depends on individual.

        • @dione:

Perhaps you're right. The guy emailed me the unlock code with instructions. Worked flawlessly.

FWIW the number I called was 132200 and said Network unlock.
