I hate it when things work…

      • +1

Lmao yeah that was meant to be isn't

  • +1

An Apple TV and $60 worth of iTunes credit for under $130 total isn't a bad deal at all.

    • +1

      $60 iTunes credit ? How??

Doh! Sorry got it now. ( it's an age thing) haha

  • +6

same price @ Office works as well ! ( free delivery for orders over $55) or in-store free pickup

    http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/apple-tv-eoxm…

    • There goes my $6 for shipping :(

  • Are they still Jailbreaking Apple TVs?

    • +1

The ATV3 has been out for ages now and there's no jailbreak - I wouldn't hold your breath.

Good if you just want easy access to Netflix on the TV though.

  • Are these any good for streaming from an ipad to a TV??

    • +1

Yeah, but you need a decent WiFi network. Also some of the apps on app store suck for streaming. Hence why I have a fire tv now, which makes my ATV look like the outdated piece of crap it is.

    • +1

I use my 2x Apple TVs solely for streaming from my iOS devices — absolute joy. The app I mainly use is Air Video, which means I can play any format on the Apple TV and control it straight from my iPhone.

I love it. Going to buy a third.

        • +1

only an uninformed fanboi would think otherwise.

Thanks for the heads up, mate

          @itsfree:

Yeah I knew you wouldn't answer my questions, and just neg my reply. I regret paying $46 for my ATV 3.

          @Ronnnie:

Yeah I knew you wouldn't answer my questions, and just neg my reply.

I was going to, but then I remembered I don't answer trolls.

I regret paying $46 for my ATV 3.

I'll happily take it off your hands — PM me.

        • What's the best device (at a similar price point) in you opinion?

        • @CanadaAye: Roku is the other popular media player brand. I personally prefer the Apple TV because of AirPlay.

        • +1

Cheers, I actually have a Roku 3 and love it. This was for my parents… I got them a wdtv but the interface is pretty clunky.

        • @CanadaAye: Yeah I found that with the WDTV too. I also tried using my Xbox for streaming, but that was too clunky, so I've been very happy with how straightforward the Apple TV UI is.

    • Nope. Because you called me a "fanboi" and made assumptions about whether I've compared other alternatives – simply because I answered someone else's question with my own personal experience.

Oh and guess what: not everybody pirates their media.

      • -2

yeah and you mislead that poster too, and negging my comments doesn't take the fact away. You need a good WiFi network to stream content from you idevices.

        • Did I dispute that? I didn't even reply to your comment. I merely provided my own personal experience. What the hell is your problem? Can't you live and let live?

        • -2

          @itsfree:

Your the one negging my replies and not answering my questions, I'd say negging peoples comments is disputing what they claim..

        • @Ronnnie: I don't owe you anything – I didn't reply to you. I negged your comment because of this stupid line:

makes my ATV look like the outdated piece of crap it is.

(Didn't realise negging was a criminal offence – apologies)

        • -3

          @itsfree:

I thought you were disagreeing with the needing a decent wifi since underneath you claimed that you stream flawlessly. And Its true the ATV is almost 3 years old, it shouldn't be selling for $90, when better devices have sold for less than $20.

After spending several days changing several TB of video to something apple will play and then uploading those movies and series to itunes for a mate who cant work computers (its why he bought apple), I can officially say apple tv sucks balls.

Give me a $2 HDMI cable anyday.

    • -2

You can use AirPlay apps or AirPlay mirroring for non-iTunes compatible formats.

    • -1

It does suck, its more restrictive than chromecast, but costs more. The only thing it has over chromecast is a remote and Ethernet connection.

    • +3

I have a Boxee and an ATV.

Given I can near-instantly stream a HD perfect quality hour long TV show with DTS sound, no sync issues (with audio or subtitles) for $2.99 and its legal I have to say I really enjoy my ATV. And that's coming from an ex- hardcore SAB/sickbeard/couch user (and a guy who has tried the lot, plex, popcorn hour, HTPC, laptop + HDMI, WD Live, etc).

A season of my favourite show is $31 (JB HiFi blu ray is $35).

Add up all you spend on HDDs, NASs, networking and time spent configuring it all (and how much of the stuff you actually watch!), legit content is well worth it these days IMO. It gets even better with iTunes gift card deals.

Plus ATV provides you with something others don't, a great way to FIND content you like.

Finally, the ATV UI + pebble smooth aluminium remote smashes anything else out there. Boxee/XBMC is a very close second.

Never considered myself a fanboy bit I'm impressed. Maybe im just getting to old to spend half my weekend stuffing around with it.

      • My biggest complaint of the ATV is the lack of local content. When I got one I was expecting that you'd have access to local catch up tv like plus7, tenplay, abc iview etc. And what really disappointed me even more, even if you use an iPad to airplay those apps, they are so unreliable and airplay only works by mirroring on plus7 app, which ends up being a 4:3 AR picture. This was one of the main reason I bought mine.

Apple TV is worth it just for AirPlay itself. If you are sporting an iPhone or iPad and don't have an Apple TV, you are missing out on one of the best features of the Eco system.

Took a vid or photo on phone? throw it to tv instantly. Watching some streaming vid via any app - throw it to TV. You can even display your whole iPad or phone screen on TV. Or play spottily, pandora, any music straight to your amp with a click of a button. It all just works, wirelessly.

    • Exactly. This is why I love mine. Being able to instantly show the photos and videos I took that day on our 50” TV is priceless.

    • Yeah, but you can do Airplay with other devices too, so you aren't missing out on that functionality if you don't have an atv

      • Not AirPlay Mirroring – only AirPlay audio

        • +1

Negatory. Full Airplay mirroring, I do it all the time on my FTV. And I found it performs better than the ATV was. GO FIGURE!

        • @Ronnnie: Hmm haven't heard this information before. Cheers

        • XBMC supports airplay and it's free

  • Interestingly I have just sold my Apple TV 2nd generation for decent coin. I thought about using the Airplay feature to watch Netflix feed from my Macbook Pro. Then I found that I could get Netflix app from my Samsung TV so I do not need my Apple TV which I had. I had it jailbroken with XBMC but I never really needed it as I ended up putting movies on USB key and plug it behind my TV and just watch it that way.

Right now I couldn't really see the need of Apple TV at all even though the price is pretty good.

Just gotta say that I recently returned my Apple TV. The thing is CRAP.

It's COMPLETELY locked into iTunes so if you have any DVD's that you've ripped - forget playing them on the TV.
Not to mention it is TERRIBLE at handling low-quality connection. The thing skips and starts and stops all day like it's got nothing better to do. I don't think we managed to watch a single movie.

I got a chromecast - did a bit of research for the best apps for it (Yeah, the learning curve might be higher), but now I can play ANY (profanity) FILE on my TV. At HIGH definition and full quality with ZERO skips and stop/starts. And it works on ANYONE's phone straight away. All for $33.

Your choice. Apple TV is in my honest opinion simply an Apple store portal for you to spend more money and gives you absolutely no other perceivable benefit. And you pay through the nose for it too.

    • +5

I can play all my downloaded files using Air Video.

Any app or device is going to be terrible at handling slow connections because that's just the nature of a slow connection.

    • I found it outperforms my chromecast, but its like light years between it and my Fire TV. Going from an atv 3 to a fire tv is like going from an iPad one to an iPad Air. Its amazing how much more fluid the UI is and how video's just load up instantly. Being able to use it for gaming and installing any app just is icing on the cake so to speak.

    • +2

I use it for Netflix and Hulu Plus and it is amazing quality on my crappy ADSL2 (say 2 mbps) connection

      • +1

Agree. ATV is great for Netflix and Hulu Plus. Steams fine for me and I'll have to renew my Hulu as it has expired. Miss all those TV shows…

    • +1

It is a little inappropriate to neg this deal just because you don't like the product. Can you tell us where to get it cheaper?

  • -2

Or you can get 2 chromecasts for $88 with free 2 months of quickflix, 1 month presto and 3 months of google play music.

  • I have a Mac mini iTunes server which holds all my media and multiple ATV's and Airport Express through the house. Everything works perfectly together with basically no setup or fiddling but it is a premium solution, not a hack together with bits and pieces of mismatched technology and lots of config effort.

  • where is the newsletter link, or is it a Hot deals sign up.

  • I've used AppleTV for about two years now. Previously I was streaming media to my PS3 using PS3 Media Server. It was great when it worked but often had too many playback problems no matter what I tried (buggy software). ATV streaming is much more reliable as long as your wifi signal is pretty good. I mainly got it for Airplay and use spotify to play music through my speaker system. Now with Movies/TV I make sure to only get MP4 files and everything is fine. I tag the files using MetaX (great app) to add cover art, description, episode, title, etc. It's very automated, I'm not manually doing it. Then it can auto-add it to my iTunes library. Neat and reliable. My only real complaint is I hate the new UI flat design on ATV so I downgraded to an older version still being signed by Apple and blocked it from the Internet so it wouldn't try to update.

    • iFlicks to convert any non-MP4 files into iTunes is also great and it can include soft subs and metadata at the same time. I've been using it for a few years now and love it.

      • +1

Why not just use a computer or tablet that plays everything, you know, like any PC with VLC or XBMC
