Sony HDR-AS20 Action Camera- $179 @ Dick Smith

100

Thought this was a pretty good deal. $100 cheaper than JB.

Product itself seems pretty competitive at this price- only a few bucks cheaper than a GoPro Hero but with Wifi, stabilization, and 120fps.

FYI Dick Smith wasn't accepting the $100 action camera trade in (http://www.sony.com.au/microsite/summerofsony/).

What do you mean by "FYI Dick Smith wasn't accepting the $100 action camera trade in" ?
I clicked on the Find A Store link, entered 3000 & it shows DSE, Target, JB Hifi as retailers

  • Doesn't look as good as the GoPro.

if the $$$s or shape isn't a concern, then yes the GoPro is better

the Sony is more streamlined… not as good as a Contour but better than the wide GoPro

as this price, the AS20 is better than the equivalent cost new GoPro Hero

AS20 has image stabilisation.. doesn't really look like it though

the good thing about the 2 sonys though is their built in stereo mics

  • i think during black Friday sales BHP was selling this for USD100.-/

  • maybe because it is only a $50 credit on trade in for this model…..

  • Wish it is the AS100V.

    • yeah - the AS20 is a bit old now

I still like mine though, does the job fine and cost $175 during a 20% off TGG sale (orig $219)

only real negative was the clip for the mounts is a PITA… but easy enough to find 1/4"-20 -> GoPro (or ball) fitting to open a wide range of mounts

I thought this was a fairly new model - wasn't it just released around June/July 2014?

        • +1

sorry - I didn't explain well - yes, you are very correct

the AS20 model is relatively new but inherits much from the AS15 and AS10 models. Kinda like how GoPro tweaks a high-end model and rerelease them as a mid-range model below newer gen devices

Adorama have it for $128 (http://www.adorama.com/SOHDRAS20.html). But I am not sure about them as I have never dealt with them. How are they? Are they any good? Does anybody have any experience with them in the past?

    • +2

That's US based and you pay international shipping on top plus currency conversion, so all up it's same cost.

      • +1

        actually more…. shipping is 66USD

        so 195 USD ~ 240 AUD

  • I think the WIFi is a plus, but the no loop recording is a negative.

    • +2

loop recording? I think you are aftering a surveillance camera rather than a action camera.

      • Not really. If you are recording your trips on the motorbike as in my case, I don't want to watch the clips unless there was an incident therefore having to open the case and deleting the footage every time is not practical.

Anyway I still bought it and will use it for other sports and vacationing. So far I like it.

  • I was at dse robina today and it was $229. Is it store specific.

    • +1
