This or wait for more xmas bargains on LG G3 32gb?

    • +10

It's a good deal if you were specifically after an iPhone and an iPhone only, if you had to make the choice between the 5C and a much more recent Android phone, I would say you'd be better off with the LG G3 if you don't want a phone that slows down after every major software update. It was also a sales flop, I don't think it will actually become more expensive (could be more expensive when production stops though)

At least the Android devs are making Android faster and more efficient with each revision, but Apple goes the opposite route and makes the OS more bloated with each revision. It's kind of ironic, I thought Apple stood for minimalism but apparently not with software design.

      • +3

funny no matter how "efficient" android 5 is, there are very limited device can update to it without rooting while iphone 4S can still update to iOS 8. And on top of that, care to explain why Android phone with 3GB of ram still runs slower than iPhone, and it becomes even slower after a while?

iOS is fatter after every update, that is true, but it brings the functions that work and because of Apple's 64bit CPU and much better GPU, it can afford to make it fancier as well

        • +1

when i bought the 5c from the JB deal for my dad i refrained from updating it to ios 8 since i know it will slow down. do not update to ios 8, i have updated my 3rd gen ipad to ios 8 and regretted it right after, the lag is very noticeable, cannot go back to ios 7 now I have to wait for ios8 jail break.

        • @striker5950:

now I have to wait for ios8 jail break.

          Huh?

        • I don't know about ancient Apple hardware, but I know my iPad Air ran like crap on iOS 8. Welcome to a world of lag, especially after you install a 3rd party keyboard to get swype functionality. The annoying aspect though is with basic tasks like opening more tabs in Safari for instance would mean you had to wait for it to reload everytime you switched back. Another problem is the WiFi dropouts, same issues with Air 2 even after latest update, restarting the iPad resolves the problem. I'm still waiting for over 12 months for Apple to improve iOS instability (though they have improved Safari), regular random restarts, apps, browser and games crashing. The hardware is what Apple does better than anybody else, they use cutting edge soc combined with excellent premium build quality in a light package. They decide to intentionally cheap out in a few area's like limiting ram, so if you want the current version of iOS to run well you need to update. At the end of the day, Apple make a ton of money on hardware, so they try to force people into updating every year.

The advantage of Android is, if you don't like the update you can always go back to an older version. There's a community developing roms that improve the performance, and you can keep the exact same performance for years and still update to the latest version of apps. Something you can't do with an Apple device. Lots of cons and pro's to each at the end of the day, I think as an Apple user you have to just accept that updating every 12 months is a requirement.

        • are very limited device can update to it without rooting while iphone 4S can still update to iOS 8

Hardware fragmentation. There's only a few types of iPhones and from a development standpoint it's pretty easy to make ios8 compatible with the previous gen A6,A7 processors.

But with Android you're dealing dozens of different architectures from different manufacturers who may or may not release source code for you to work on.

And if you want to compare memory usage, Android kit Kat was designed with low end 512mb phones in mind and as such received an optimisation update. Apple didn't bother with slimming down ios because they know that they are only selling high end devices and people look forward to having cool new features that coincide with every new iPhone release. Want this new feature without suffering performance issues? Too bad, your iPhone is obsolete… They want you to believe that a bi-annual iPhone upgrade is the norm.

An iPhone 4s can barely handle Ios8, sure you can upgrade but would you want to…

Im not saying that one OS is better than the other. I'm just stating that Google and apple have two different approaches, Google looks to support phones of various budgets and Apple only for bleeding edge hardware.

        • Apple blocked downgrading to iOS 7 months ago…

        • @A3Australia:
only way to go back to ios 7 is to jailbreak ios 8 and downgrade to ios 7, I just searched it up and it seems its been jailbroken.
          http://www.redmondpie.com/ios-8-jailbreak-status-update/

        • @striker5950:

I find 5C is fine with iOS8. I agree however that 3rd gen iPad lags with iOS8.

        • @striker5950: I bought a 5C for my mum and I'm using iPhone 5, iPad 3 and iPad air, all on 8.1.2, no noticeable lag for me. But might because I always do fresh install on major update then restore the backup

        • @scrimshaw: I hear what you saying, and from my understand, you agree that Google need to either sacrifice high end for low end handset or the opposite, while Apple only sells high end so it worries less about the hardware and focus on improving the OS?

        • @Ronnnie: I'm quite surprised your iPad Air is laggy since I have one and it works perfect. Try backup and restore?

        • @striker5950:

now I have to wait for ios8 jail break.

Huh? Why wait? Two Jailbreak tools are out.

        • @striker5950:

only way to go back to ios 7 is to jailbreak ios 8 and downgrade to ios 7, I just searched it up and it seems its been jailbroken.

Which is why I went - Huh?

iOS 8.1.x has been jailbreakable for ages.

        • -1

I'm happy with my android, you're happy with your Apple, the end.

          ps. android > apple.

        • @cloud226:

I do a fresh install after every update and it was still laggy. I found with iOS if you don't do clean install after every update it introduces instability, for instance I couldn't finish a run on AnTuTu after iOS update until I did a clean install. I replaced my Air with the Air 2, and there's no real comparison, lag is pretty much non-existent on the Air 2. Still the odd occasional stutter here and there, no device is perfectly smooth.

      • iPhone 5C is a very good phone, and works well with iOS 8.1. No issues so far.

  • JB have stopped this promotion?

    • +2

Still on so nobody missed it.

Kmart have a full page advertisement in today's Melbourne Herald Sun advertising the Optus iPhone 5c 16GB version for $479. I hope no one pays that price.

Are they locked now according to this title?

No, I have asked for the title of that thread to be changed to reflect the fact that they are NOT carried locked.

      EDIT:
Title of the thread in your link has now been changed.
I have also reported this bargain in order to have its title edited.

      • Who neg me … lol just asking because of I saw that title.

        So Telstra one also unlocked?

        • +1

          So Telstra one also unlocked?

They are ALL 'Telstra ones'. No matter if purchased from a JB HiFi Store or a Telstra Store

          They are all unlocked.

Thank you for alerting us to the incorrect title.

        • -1

          lol neg again.

  • I purchased one for a present and it arrived yesterday is unlocked.

I spoke to 3 different Telstra Reps before purchasing to make sure it is unlocked and even used online chat and saved the chat for proof ^_^

    • How long did delivery take after ordering thanks?

      • +1

        Next day delivery

I went into both Jb Hi-Fi and Telstra Shop at Castle Hill and Rouse Hill and was told that these were locked to Telstra and that I would have to pay up to $150 to get them unlocked. I went home and called Telstra to confirm unlocking amount and was told by the unlocking area that all Iphone 5 and up are not locked.

I went into Telstra Shop at Rouse Hill the next day to purchase two of these phones and told the salesman what I had been told by their unlocking department. He said that it was not true and that the phones were locked to Telstra. I made him put the IMEI number from the back of the iPhone 5c box into his computer to check and of course it came up unlocked.

They had to activate the Telstra Prepaid Sim (which was included in the price) to get the $399 sale price but we haven't taken the Telstra SIM out of the packet. We put a Virgin SIM in the phone and it worked straight away.

Not sure why staff at JB Hi-Fi and especially Telstra Shop don't know that these are unlocked.

    • +1

Telstra Shop at Rouse Hill also had the green IPhone 5c's

    • -4

Why you have to let them believe it? You want them to lock it in the future?

    • +2

They're probably just covering their asses. If they tell you it's unlocked and it isn't, you'd have recourse to return it and they'd be stuck with a 'used' phone. They are just playing it safe.
Although I agree that they should know whether it is locked or not.

    • +1

It's an unusual area; traditionally all phones that are sold as prepaid are locked. Even the iPhone 4s fell under this.

This is the first time a phone has been sold prepaid and unlocked simultaneously. So a lot of staff may not be aware of this change.

  • Will these also be unlocked when bought online?

    • +1

Will these also be unlocked when bought online?

YES! All the Telstra iPhone 5c 32GB handsets are carrier unlocked. Whether purchased in JB HiFi stores, Telstra stores, or via Telstra On-Line store.

  • Or, as is always the case you can buy two decent Androids for about the same price:
    Eg. www.ozbargain.com.au/node/175244 2 x Moto G with 2 x Chromecasts (Christmas presents?)

    • I wouldn't want either. 4 inch screen is too small, irrespective if it runs better. Give me the lumia 1320 at $200 over this, though the camera sucks.

    • +2

Please, can we not turn this into another Android thread crap?

  • better deal for those going overseas for the holidays…..GST refund

  • +2

Thank you :) Had my prepaid iphone 4s for 3 years and just as the lag and battery life were about to get too much to bear, i had my first drop that caused damage and pretty much obliterated the screen.
Got a yellow 5c, very excited to have a new phone coming.. and to get a bargain too of course ;)

    • +2

I might get my wife the pink one. She keeps harping on about the iphone 6, but at the full retail price I just can't see the value of it (although the slow motion stuff looks very cool).

  • -1

colour is the problem - white available?

    • +1

It is only the less popular colours that are part of this current deal - pink, yellow and green (if you're lucky to find in stock in store!) Blue and White are more expensive.

      • +1

I was lucky for the colour, got pink for girl :D

  • +1

    Out of stock online :(

    • Try JB Hifi, they are advertising it instore. Saw advert in Chatswood

  • +1

Anyone keen on this deal should hop into a nearby Telstra shop. I did that today (Melbourne city) and they still have some stock left. Seems that each shop is left with only 1 colour option, but the staff was obliging enough to check for stock in other stores. Hope this help! :)
