Plex for Android - $2.43

360

12c more than the previous deal from last month
Maybe it's got something to do with the falling $A??

Still a good buy if you're still looking for this app on the google play store.

It has been free before, though…

This app is frequently made free both on amazon apps (AU and US versions) and google play. If you're a true ozbargainer you'd probably want to just hold out on this one.

  • Last month it was free on Amazon.

But quite a few versions behind.

    • 3.7.0 vs 3.6.3 so not too bad… Don't think I've seen it free on the Play store. I got it free on Amazon.

      • Depends on how their version numbers work but that could be 7 versions lower. Yeah obviously it's great to get free, though yeah was just mentioning there is a downfall with the Amazon version.

        • Well it looks like they use major.minor.micro.patch for versioning but it doesn't really tell you how far behind it is. BTW, I've never heard of a version number strategy where the next increment of 3.6.9 is 3.7.0.

The good thing about Plex on Amazon is that it isn't abandonware. Amazon just takes a long time to approve.

    • TIL that the free Amazon version is behind in updates to the Playstore version

  • I bought this app ages ago, never use it. Got it on wp for $1, and it has no chromecast support. :(

      Definitely does have Chromecast support.

      • Yeah does on Android, not wp.

Ooh my bad, didn't know what you meant by wp. Thought it was an alternative marketplace like Amazon, but I get now you mean windows phone.

    Mini-review:
Bought it on Amazon a few weeks ago for a few hundred (free) coins. It is quite impressive, but regularly crashes on my Nexus 4 phone. By default it transcodes any video stream in to 1Mbps / 480p. Certainly worth a few bucks if you are going to use it, but on my low speed wifi network, I prefer to copy the movie to an external drive and use my WD TV Live.

Same it actually slowed down my 2011 macbook and fans ran on full steam, now the i've got the movies on my NAS drive and play them straight on my LG TV, much faster and better option.

Plex is good for music, and only useful for video when you have a device that can't play the format natively like MKV on a PS3.
