Check out The Good Guys Bonus as well. In particular, this offer.

  • Need a smaller TV for the bedroom. What panel is this using?
Is the Picture quality as good as the higher end model? Don't need 200hz.

"Redemption entitles you to unlimted playback up until up until the 30th of September 2016."

Hate the fact that digital content is now often coming with time limits :(

    • +1

that sucks that you can't keep the movies.

    • +1

      Yeah, hate that too. :(

    • +5

Even more reason for people to start pirating when they do stuff like this, not that I agree with piracy, but sometimes people have no other options.

        buy the DVD??

          What's a DVD?

      • -2

Well to be fair the option is there too pay for it again ;)

    How is this TV?

How does it compare to this TV Sony Bravia W80B Wifi 50" LED 100Hz 1080Hz 1080P Full HD 3D TV besides the resolution?

I got it from Costco for $839 last week :P

    • +2

the one you got is not 4k res

How does it compare to this TV Sony Bravia W80B Wifi 50" LED 100Hz 1080Hz 1080P Full HD 3D TV besides the resolution?

This TV is way better. It's a 2160p/4K resolution TV.

      • +5

        He was asking besides resolution.

I question whether 4K is particularly useful at the moment, given the lack of content. Will 1080p content on a 4K TV look better than on a native 1080p TV?
There are many other factors that come into the quality of the TV too which can be considered.

        • Also remember that Sony UHD 4K movies are 40GB downloads so basically you will have to pull them down overnight. The bitrate is woeful considering that the Criterion blu-rays I own take up nearly 50GB and are one-quarter the resolution.

        • @cryptowiz: BD ISO's are around 40-50gb lol. Considering most mkv movies are about 10-15gb for ~9000kb bitrate, shouldn't the 4k movies be somewhat on par quality wise? Does sony actually sell 4k content online? Never seen them before

        • I specifically mentioned Criterion Collection BD's. These usually have a bitrate of 35Mbps which is why they have such a great reputation. You are correct that a 10-15GB MKV Blu-ray rip would give comparable quality to the Sony UHD 4K downloads because of the bitrate.

And yes, Sony does have UHD 4K content for sale online… refer http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2013/09/sony-launches-the-first-4k…

        • buying as a computer monitor

        • @cryptowiz: Is the 4K content H.264 encoded like your usual MKV Blu-ray rip, or is it H.265? That would make quite a difference.

        • @daerka: Yep.

About half the filesize for the same percieved quality. Percieved isn't a get out word, it's actually more or less the same quality for half the bitrate.

Is this TV missing 1 inch?

    • +13

Yes, Santa took it away because you've been a bad boy this year

    • +15

We could all do with an extra inch

      • +4

        ya, length and width

        • +3

That way I could disappoint with both inches!

  • Just checking, this has HDMI 2.0 right?

    • That's what it says in the specs.

  • -1

can this do 60hmz at 4k as a pc monitor?

    • 60Hz you mean? That's what it says in the specs.

      • yes, but its not enough if it can do it , if it dosnt support Display porl version 1.2 or hdmi then the signal cant get to it……

        • Hmm, wouldn't know. Mine's still in the box. Probably going to play around with it today, after I've set up a new Kodi box for it.

      • should be ok

        4K
Four times the detail of Full HD
HDMI 2.0 for smooth blur free 4K 50/60p video

        • Ahh, good then.

        • -1

          @daerka:

but does ur video card support hdmi 2.0 ? ;-)

mine wont and i need a 970 or 980 nvida card.

          cheers

        • @T1OOO: Umm, no. lol

    • +2

Not HDMI 2.0 guys! 3840x2160/60p (YCbCr4:2:0 8bit) 60p with reduced chroma 4:2:0 vs 4:4:4. Text will appear weird if you use it as a monitor.

      • +2

Thanks for knowing your shit :)

  • +3

Sorry to burst your bubble but this model is only 50hz.

    • Is it? Damn then, the official specs only state Motionflow XR 200, so I thought 100Hz as mentioned on the TGG site sounded right for native. Better remove it from the title then.

    • You're absolutely right. Motionflow XR200 divided by 4 = 50

    • +2

This chart (https://www.alloys.com.au/docs/range_guides/Sony%20-%20Bravi…) disagrees. As do TGG and videopro retailer website. Native refresh rate in all 3 clearly states it is 100hz.

Not all motionflow xr 200 are the same. It appears that Sony uses "frame insertion (interpolation), LED backlighting blinking (line blinking), and Image Blur reduction via signal processing" to embellish their rate, with a maximum multiplier of 8. In this case, it is possible there is only interpolation and no blinking or image blur reduction so multiplier is only 2.

  • Don't trust the Spec on The Good Guys's website.

Look at this TV for example:
    http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/sony-79-inches199cm-uhd-led-lc…

On their site says 100HZ, but the Sony official site says Motionflow XR 800 (200HZ)

bought, now need to tell the wife, and what to do the current 42 inch Panasonic.

  • I wonder how this compares with the Seiki 65" UHD LCD LED TV at Dicksmith for $1100?

    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/tvs/seiki-65-uhd-lcd-led-tv-dsau…

  • great price indeed! Thanks for sharing

  • +1

Will this show Chan31 in 4k?

  • I wonder if you could reformat the HDD after the movies expire and use as portable HDD?

    • That's what your meant to do :)
How big is the HDD? How large is a 4K movie?

      • +1

        465GB hard drive.

    • Yes, they explicitly state that (somewhere).

Still doesn't justify the expiry of the movies though.

  • +2

I got the 4k 55" and its awesome, blu rays look much better than on my old 46" Sony; Sony 4k Movies are ok and yes the HD is yours if you want to format it.

  • +2

With thanks, here are the movie titles you can choose five from, in case anyone is interested:

    • Captain Phillips
    • The Amazing Spider Man
    • The Amazing Spider Man 2
    • Ghostbusters
    • Premium Rush
    • SALT
    • Battle: Los Angeles
    • Money Ball
    • The Patriot
    • Total Recall

And yes, awesome TV. Really like it so far. Kodi looks good in 4K too. Only 30 fps max via HDMI 1.4, but I tend to watch in 23.98 fps anyhow. Photos look great on this TV, and the integrated Skype function is quite nice as well. Quite happy with my purchase so far. Well, except for the fact that I've bought it a bit over an hour too early to qualify for the $50 voucher. Asked TGG nicely to still honor it but they've just said tough luck. :(

    • Thanks for the list.

Oh well $50 store credit doesn't mean much anyway. You won't be able to just redeem it for cash or anything which means you'll be spending more money again to try to use that store credit.

      • Yeah, you're probably right. By the time you get the vouchers, and before the time they're expiring, you may have to buy something you didn't really need again.

  • +1

I don't understand people saying it doesn't have hdmi 2.0, it says it does right on the official Sony website.

    • I guess it's because the TV doesn't support the maximum specifications HDMI 2.0 has to cater for, i.e. 3840x2160@60 4:4:4 8bit, if it's only 3840x2160@60 4:2:0 8bit.

4K formats HDMI 2.0 will have to support.

      • What will that mean for me in layman's terms? ;)

I have a GPU with Hdmi 2.0 support and I've just ordered this TV (I do comfy couch pc gaming.

        • I haven't actually seen the difference first hand, so I don't really know. What evalord said with text looking weird makes sense, seeing it would just use surrounding color information to fill in the missing data. Guess you'll soon find out. :/

  • Anyone know if i purchased yesterday at JB havent taken delivery…that they can price match after i have already paid on credit card?

    • +1

I think legally they don't have too but I'm sure you'll be able to just get a refund if they don't want to drop the price.

      • Thanks for the info.Store closed…have to wait till Sat. Hope prices and stock stay the way they are.

  • In sure in the near future there will be news CDS which have 4k content compressed around 10GB files. No way in earth anyone is going to download 50gb movie…

  • Is there any difference between 3d quality/ technology of Sony 800b / 850b/ x8500b and x9000b ?
Or are they all the same and equally bad ??

  • I have bought the 55 inch not so long now, and really happy with it. I use it with a soundbar (one of the let down compared to the expensive brother).

  • Does anyone know how 4k TV's perform for gaming ? Need to upgrade a 5 year old sony for my PS4

  • Go for 4k just for future proof or stick with 1080p?

    • You should be fine with 1080P for some years to come. I don't think you'll be missing out on much if you stick to the much cheaper Full HD for now. I mainly wanted at least one 4K TV to play around with.

      • I asked same question above and got Negative votes even though I mentioned "besides the resolution" :P

        • It's not about what you ask, it's about how you ask it. :P

  • This TV is $1039 delivered at Sony Australia Online Store. Might be cheaper for some people that need the TV delivered.

    http://www.sony.com.au/product/kd-49x8500b

  • So is this 50hz or 100hz I'm so confused!

    • Quite likely it is 100 Hz native, but it seems nobody can be really sure about these things anymore.

  • Tossing up whether to get this or the Samsung UA48H6400AW

    http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/samsung-48-inches122cm-fhd-led…

I will be using the screen with a HDMI cable to my PC to watch 1080p content, play games and such. I really don't see why I would need 4k as everything I watch is in 1080p. I think there is also a limit for HDMI on how effective 4k is. Like if I were to play a game at 4k on my PC, I don't think HDMI 1.4 could handle that very well from what I have read.

What do you reckon guys? Go for the Sony or the Samsung? (or Something else???)

  • Im undecided between this or the $498 Full Hd Sony from good guys. So for UHD and bonus hard drive and an inch extra is it worth $500 more??????

  • My Not so good experience of trying to buy this tv online via good guys website!

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/176593

  • Bought! A decent upgrade from my KDL-40W550. Very happy! :)

  • I finally bit the bullet. What a weird day it has been! started off with wanting to get the Sony FHD 48inch ($498) , then the 50 inch ($699) and now this one.

    • I went the other way around.
Started with wanting this one at $999 then to the $699 and lastly bought the $498 one (with $100 store credit making it $398). It was too cheap to pass and I really don't need 2 TVs.

      • I was originally going to get the $498 but waited too long… out of stock everywhere. Good on you for managing to get one though, definitely a better deal.

  • Don't forget to get the bonus $100 voucher for $500+ spend at TGG

  • Got this one yesterday to replace this one

Love it.. See you in another 5 years.

  • Here is my story:

On Wednesday I went the The Good Guys Castle Hill to buy this T.V. It was 5:30 but they were already closing which is weird since there opening hours say they should be opening till 6pm that day. Anyhow I got in and I wanted to buy a T.V. they had no issues except that they couldn't offer me the online deal, which is understandable. So right there and them I went online and placed an order while i was still in the store, they said that head office need to allocate a T.V. for pick up and that it could be done on Saturday.

Today i get a phone call saying that they are sold out everywhere and they have NO CLUE of when they are getting more stock.

Now i'm just reposting this story on their facebook!

    • I bought this TV 2 days ago. Went to TGG on Marion Road here in Adelaide, all they had left was the display model and were asking full price for it. Screw buying a TV that everyone has handled and has been sitting there playing rubbish for probably 6months, being abused etc. Asked staff about availability, they said there wouldnt be more of this model in until February. Luckily TGG Norlunga had 11 left so I drove up there and bought one. You snooze you lose.

Have to say its a great TV so far. Don't stress though, good deals on TV's are available all the time. Just wait a month or two and keep looking around and you will find a good TV for a good price.

      • Just an update: The good guys head office made it right, got my T.V. my discount :D

  • I was in Good Guys Artarmon today and they still have the TV on display for the same price and stock was available.

  • Still love the TV. Photos look amazing on it. Found some demo 4K content which looks awesome. As for the 4K movies I've received from Sony, these are utterly disappointing. Either these aren't really 4K or these movies don't look any better in 4K than they do on Blu-Ray. :(

    • still waiting for sony to deliver me this 4K hardrive.

How long did it take for it to arrive mine been sitting in waiting for fulfillment for about 2 weeks.

      • Only took about 1 1/2 weeks. Was surprised myself how quick it got here. Lodged my claim early on the 26th, so might have gotten in before the boxing day sales queue piled up.

        • That's fast, I lodged my claim on the 28th and I still haven't received it yet.
