Don't expect Yamaha/Honda quality for this price, but at $250 it appears to be a bargain.

And $300 Here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/175281

Not available in WA, ACT, NSW and NT,
49 cc single cylinder 2 stroke air cooled engine
Single speed transmission with automatic clutch
50kg capacity
Easy pull start
CDI ignition
Front and rear hydraulic disc brakes
Emergency cease-fire
12 month service warranty

In the past I have not recommended buying these types of bikes because they tend to fall apart, but for this price its a bargain, its worth spending a bit of time tightening up all the bolts on the bike before riding (with loc-tite). And you may be lucky enough to get a year out of it.

Better off buying a 20 year old Yamaha or Honda for a little bit more in my opinion, but this could suit someone.
Have owned a few of these in the past, I can't stress enough - you must Loc-Tite everything.

  • These are for kids? how legal are they?

    • Yes. They'd only be legal on private property

I'm guessing that is why it's not available in WA, ACT, NSW and NT. Laws haven't caught up yet in VIC, QLD, SA and TAS.

I'd never let my 6 year old on one. I can't imagine that'd change in the next 3 or 4 years. Kids should not be in a position where a small mistake is likely to kill them.

It's more about risk management surely?
My kids could get badly injured on a push bike or drown in the river but I don't stop them riding or swimming. Friends with trail bikes supervise their kids.

And what Law would that be?

      • nothing stopping people from that region buying mini bikes anywhere else

      • +1

No the reason why they are not for sale in WA is because of the WA trading laws. As Supercheap Auto is registered as a "car parts and accessories" store they are only allowed to sell "car parts and accessories" and unfortunately this bike does not fall into that category. This is also why the Supercheap Auto stores over east sell little RC cars and gardening tools and such but you will not find them in WA. However I am not too sure if this is the same reason as to why the other states are not selling these bikes as I am not familiar with there trading laws.

i only found out about that recently when i went in to buy their $1 levels on a keychain. they weren't allowed to sell the level on its own so just bunged it on a keychain to get around that silly law

      • I use to ride one of these kids of bikes all the time as a kid. So did my brother and two sisters. I understand how you can say they are dangerous but we can't cotton wool life, otherwise what would be the point?

      • You can't wrap your child in cotton wool their whole lives. It's called risk management, obviously you're not going to let your six year old ride a motorbike on a mountain or near rivers, etc.

If it's on flat land, I can't see anything too fatal, especially on a 50cc.

Have to agree with the 20yr old Jap bike comment. Checked one out recently. It is cheap, but they are absolute junk. They make a Kmart BMX look like a tank. would last a few rides if your lucky. I've seen tougher plastic Tonka trucks!

  • 50kg capacity, so if your kid is fat, don't bother?

    • +5

For the age group this is aimed at, it would probably be classed as "morbidly obese".

Ie, buy him/her something WITHOUT an engine…

        and WITHOUT sugar! :)

          And not from KFC

  • How fast do these things go?

  • Too small for average ppl to ride, you'd have to be malnourished and/or seriously vertically challeneged.

    • +6

That's like saying a baby's cot is too small for an average adult to sleep in. Duh :P

    You'd be better off with a leaf blower + skateboard… I recently bought myself an electric scooter;

Anyone had a go at riding this and is possibly average male size around 80kg. Might consider if it last ~ 20 shortish rides

    • Davo, why don't you get a real bike? There are cheap adult size bikes around that will actually last and have resale value too.

Sold - now fido will be the most badass dog at the local park

  • I had one of these 4-5 years ago, different brand but looks the exact same.
Older model of this one http://www.foxico.com.au/49cc-stingray-mini-blue-dirt-bike-p…
I probably weighed around 50-60kg and it still went pretty well but wasnt very comfortable if you are tall.
If you take care of it they run pretty well and are fairly reliable but if you dont they can take a long time to get started. If you keep pulling the pull start to much to try to get it to start it will end up breaking the string.. happened to me a couple of times.

It's hard to imagine how offering something like this for half the cost of a helmet can possibly be a good idea.

A lot of these comments sound like soft city folk who shouldn't be considering this product at all. The comments worth reading are from those who have some experience with motor bikes aimed at the the kid market and therefore speak from a base of knowledge.

When I was a kid more kids had peewee 50s than had Commodore 64s
Todday more kids have mobile phones than have push bikes so when you hear of a dad who buys his kid a 50cc bike it sounds dangerous and irresponsible. Maybe it is, maybe the world can do without this category of product, but maybe we're all soft now.

Fact is, this is a kids motor bike, designed for kids…mind you big kids used to ride peewee 50s back in the day too. The question is not if kids should ride it but if the deal is good. If the bike is not of quality and is likely to fall apart then that's what I want to know about.

That's my 1.3 cents worth (adjusting for inflation).
    Neg away

    • Yep. Give your kids a teaspoon of concrete and get them as many cc's as you can afford.

      Straya. kenoath ay.

  • I've seen these a couple times now but was never brave enough to buy one. If anyone here's got one, PLEASE let us know how you went. For now I'm going to hold off till they drop to the sub $100 mark…

    • You have no need to worry about quality as they will most likely not drop below $100.
