The reviews in whirlpool forum are pretty much positive especially at this price range. Windows 8.1 is optimised for 1gb of RAM

  • -7

Needs more RAM and a Stylus. Why does hardly anyone sell the VivoTab Note 8 in this country?

    • +14

And that'll need an extra 200 or so dollars

    • +1

The accessory pack comes with a stylus and the BT keyboard or this one in a case are also available at Target on sale.

      • He means a Waco type stylus, not a dodgy capcative one.

  • Coles have a similar tablet for $99
They guy at the service desk said people keep returning them

    • Similar in what way? They're both around $100?

      • Pendo pad 7 vs Pendo pad 8.

        • +1

Isn't the Pendo Pad 7 an Android tablet?

        • @eug:

There is a Windows version. It has been posted here at least twice from Coles.

      • There both pendos with windows
They have been on the service desk for a long time with a yellow sticker begging for someone to buy them

No idea about the specs but I think they include office

  • apart from resolution and dimensions, is the screen quality any different to the 7"

kicking myself as I got the 7" about a month ago at 89..

    • -5

The guy who neg me tell me how? Not just neg without a reason.

      • +6

I didn't neg you, but it could be because everyones experience with tablets and operating systems is subjective.

Saying that the Microsoft has a long way to improve to make it a "good tablet", well, its not Microsofts tablet. Its Pendo's tablet, and they're a budget vendor.

To me, personally, I think that Microsoft tablets blow iPad's and Android tablets out of the water. But thats because I didnt put $100 into a cheesy Pendo pad, but rather closer to $500 when the Surface Pro was on special.

For my purposes, the iPad and Android tablets aren't even in the running (But I run a Android phone and loathe Windows Phone).

        • -2

I am not saying Windows tablet is no good, I have Transformer T100 I also love it but because of apps and the keyboard/voice input I have been using my 8" Android more than it.

        • +1

          @superforever:

I am not saying Windows tablet is no good

          You said:

Microsoft still a long way to improve Windows to make it a good tablet.

Isn't that saying … Windows tablets are no good?

Anyway your view is perfectly valid. The point is that not everyone uses tablets the same way you do. Others might find them perfectly good.

        • @eug:

ha ha Android and iPad also a long way to improve., just because Windows Tablet startup late.

        • @superforever: Well most ppl prefer typing over talking to the device including myself.

Yes the lack of apps. Do you know most apps are just striped down version of a website. With windows tablet you get full browser support. In some cases website is better than the apps. Facebook website e.g. is much better than its apps.

Voice input you can get through internet too. e.g. install google chrome and you can talk to the browser.

One more problem with windows tablet on 7 or 8 inch screen is, touching x or maximize etc is hard. Its ok on surface tablets cuz of big screen size but on 8 inch screen at least I find myself struggling to click on small close buttons. This problem can be fixed by changing scaling size.

Only reason for me to get android or ipad over windows tablet would be better screen resolutions. Windows is much more capable and productive. And most importantly we can run legacy software. I love playing Devil may cry or call of duty on the go.:)

        • @dadeadman:

One more problem with windows tablet on 7 or 8 inch screen is, touching x or maximize etc is hard.

Clicking X might be difficult, but instead of clicking on the maximize button, you can also double-tap on the window's title bar to maximize (or to restore it back down).

        • @dadeadman:

Voice input you can get through internet too. e.g. install google chrome and you can talk to the browser.

Very hard to use chrome without keyboard. The voice input I mean is not voice control, I just want to input my message with voice instead of typing. It is very common in iPad and Android. So far I can only find voice command not voice input.

        • @superforever: I am pretty sure there is software for that and I remember there was dictate text in windows 7. Dont know about windows 8 though. There are options in windows which can help disable people to use the pc. So there must be text dictating too.

      • +1

Yeah I tend to agree with misterpotatomato. The problem is, most people think that a tablet has to be an upscaled phone. It doesn't. I tend to use my Surface Pro more like how I imagine Microsoft envisage a tablet- a mobile hybrid device. I had an Android tablet for a while, and it was nice, but not very productive, so I stopped using it. With the Surface Pro, I can consume content like before (modern apps, browser etc), but more importantly, I can actually do useful stuff like reply to my emails, create documents, run multiple apps side by side etc. And it's always on me since it's like carrying around a notebook. I find this a far more useful scenario.

Mind you, that advantage comes from a combination of having the Windows ecosystem and a built in kickstand and keyboard combo - not just because its a Windows tablet.

      • Don't take it personally, I just think some people develop issues because they can't neg on Facebook so they go crazy here to take out their frustration.

While I might not agree with what you say, I won't neg you for expressing some interesting points of view on the product ;)

    • I bought a 10" windows tablet about 2 weeks ago and I absolutely love it! Microsoft did a very good job optimizing windows for touch screen.
Although I wouldn't buy this Pendo pad, you can get a 2GB/32GB tablet for ~$20 more on Aliexpress.

Edit: this one for example is US$98.50 shipped:

  • Even better price nice mate.

  • Thing is, can you charge while plugging in a usb hub and hdmi outputting to a monitor at the same time.

    • Ports include microsd, microhdmi, OTG USB port, charging port.

From the Whirlpool link sounds like it.

      • Did you even read?
That's referring to the 7" one that doesn't have a dedicated power plug.

    • Bought one yesterday and the answer is yes.

  • Well now I'm having a gollum debate between pendo or pipo set up as as a little HTPC unit. And though that may sound a bit studio ghibli I am lucky I'm not OC and may just let both drift by like a little baby moses. Damn you Ozbargain!

    • Sméagol says NO

    • Pipo has 2 GB ram

  • How does this compare with the Unisurf 8" deal for $168 with 1 year of Office 365?

    http://www.buckscoop.com.au/deals/unisurf-7-windows-8-1-quad…

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/computers-tablets/ipads-surfa…

    • This should also come with Office 365 according to the whirlpool forum :) Otherwise specs looks about the same except this one is 30%~ cheaper

  • is it possible to use the mini HDMI port as a USB port?

    • no, it's miniHDMI not MHL.
The device has a usb port…

    • +2

would you crush up a dvd and cram it in a USB port on your computer? :P

      • +1

mmm, give me a minute to think…..

  • Assuming screen size is unimportant, would the Toshiba Encore 2 (7") be better since a) it's a 'good' brand (although debatable) b) it includes a year of Office 365

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/tablets/toshiba/…

Edit: Nevermind, the Pendo includes the same 1 year Office 365

    • It's encore mini not encore 2 also this screen resolution is far better than the Tosh encore mini.

I should have waited but got the galaxy tab 4 8" instead but at least the screen resolution is not so bad and acceptable the coles pendo has the worst resolution.

Surprised Target reduce it from 199 to 109.
16 gigs is not enough but the HP stream with 16 gigs seemed more adequate for some reason. But that's 199 at dick smith.

      Says $129

      http://www.target.com.au/p/pendo-pad-windows-8-tablet/564468…

      • Jb Hifi made a typo then :(

      • My bad the hp stream 8 is 32 gigs not 16 gigs. Hence $199 but it is a $99 machine in USA cos it only has 1 gig ram.

  • -3

This thing is no better than a paper weight, (just more expensive)

  • I just read the coupon as CRACK2SCHOOL… still waking up…

this might be good for your kids, but feedback of someone who owns one said it had to be replaced 3 times because the screen kept 'falling out'..

  • can it install any windows program or just from their app store?

    • +1

Any. It's essentially a laptop without a keyboard.

    • +2

It can run any windows programs.

      • thanks

  • Plug in a USB external Optical drive to install and software from DVD.

    • +2

      DVDs are so old fashioned.

      • Received this today, battery was around 4% out of the box so best to charge it up first.

I can confirm it detected my old generic slimline DVD-RW, and 2TB external USB drive.

Thanks OP for posting this ozbargain CodeX, good value for money for a Windows 8.1 tablet.

  • Is this any good guys? Need a couple of sub $100 tablets for kids. What do you recommend?

    • +6

That's like saying, "I need some food, is spaghetti any good?". It depends on what you preferences and needs are for the tablet.

      • Maybe I didn't clarify what I meant by being any good! ;) I mean in terms of longevity. Are these prone to fail prematurely, how do the apps behave on these in general? Stable or way too many FCs?

        • 1) For build qauility I'd recommend reading the Whirlpool thread.
          2) Limited apps available if you don't want to use desktop programs.
          3) FCs would be common on an Android device with only 1GB of ram. However as this is Windows, it has a swap file to act as virtual memory. So shouldn't be many closes at all.

I saw give it a go. It's a bargain price and worst case you return it.

  • Credit to 303-Acid for picking this up first in the main deal.

  • I have a toshiba Encore with 32gb, dont know how these work with only 16gb, just not enough, your gonna need a good sd card.

  • Hope the screen is better than the blurry upscaled 7" model. Baytrail windows performance is great but the screen was utter rubbish

    • +1

Yeah ..i bought the 7" version… the screen is the worst I ever see in my life

  • 16GB severely limits the usefulness of this. Out of the box, it'll have maybe 5GB free.

If you install the included copy of Office 365, you're down to 1GB. Install Windows updates and you're down to just about nought. If you install these updates first, you won't even be able to install Office 365.

You can't even change the 365 installation folder without using symbolic links (due to the "click to run" installer).

    • WimBoot.

      • Not sure your point?

WIMBoot means the 16GB eMMC has a 5GB or so partition with compressed core Windows 8.1 files.

It leaves 9-10 GB usable, of which around 5 GB will be free space. An Office 365 install uses around 3-4 GB.

        • Point is it provides a lot more space than the default install Pendo provide. In fact WimBoot makes the free space similar to what iOS8 leaves on an iPad.

        • The default install on this tablet uses WIMBoot.

        • @BuuBox:
          facepalm
Read the thread on Whirlpool, it's not.

          http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2316166

        • @PainToad:

You mean the posts that say…

"I bought one today and it has Wimboot already!"

          Or…

"first it has a Wimboot install so don't remove your recovery partition or it won't boot."

          ?

        • @BuuBox:
Far more people saying it isn't wimboot compared to those who say it does.

    • Just buy a decent SD card and mount it as a directory under the C drive. Space issues go away and apps can be installed there.

  • +1

How would this work as a torrent machine/tv streamer? Similar price to apple tv but with full windows? $110 is hard to beat…

    • +1

I've got a laptop with the same baytrail processor. Works great for everything except games. Uses next to no power and battery lasts a long time

      • Cool. Missed out on the $20 off but might still pick one up.

  • Thanks OP, I've been looking for something to replace an old netbook I have with a dodgy screen, and this looks close to perfect.

The HDMI output is a big plus IMO, which I don't believe the HP one posted recently had.

  • +1

    nearly ozbargained lol

    • LAST ONE!! quick!

  • Has anyone successfully create image of the system (C:) drive off this tablet and restore it? Can disk imaging like Norton Ghost be used to backup and restore the system image on this tablet?

I am sure it will be handy to be able to reset to factory setting in case someday Win 8.1 won't boot at all!

  • +1

    Crap!

The last one went between me hitting buy and paying.

    That'll teach me for delaying!

    • That might be me. I thought I was the last, couldn't wait after seeing the comment above last one quick!!! Had to pull the trigger. LOL

  • SOLD OUT

  • Expired.

More expensive (USD $126 is AU$152). No local warranty. Noname brand (even more so than Pendo). How is this a better deal?

      • 2 gig ram, 32 gigs memory as opposed to 16 gigs memory remember this Target one is $129 @ 1 gig ram and 16 gigs memory. I think it is a really lousy deal.

  • $99 @AUSPOST

      • That is not a deal at all as coles had it for $89 and according to an ozbargainer, returned more times than re-runs of border security.

Actually coles does not allow returns on opened sealed tablet mobile and mobile broadband boxes. Its policy.

    • +1

What is happening to ozbargain? It's becoming over run by know it alls, that actually know very little. School holidays?

      • +1

Luckily not run by Miss Procedures and Captain format.

  • +1

Stock available again through new ebay link, deal has been updated, thanks to zj

    • -1

      Removed as a dupe

  • Funny, the price went back up to $149 from $129 yesterday when I bought one. Got it at $109. Maybe it was a pricing error that wasn't fixed as the latest Target catalog mentions it being $145 in store.

    Well lucky me again :)
