i know they are junk, but I love Chiko Rolls. I am guessing they are best from a take away , deep fried but how are these ones heated in the oven?

    • +19

Not a word of a lie. A few months ago, while waiting for a burger at my local fish 'n chip shop, a guy walked in and asked the owner if he could please fry 4 chiko rolls that he brought in with him. The owner kindly obliged and did the lot for $1. Now there's a true bargain hunter!

      • +3

man, thats pretty rude isnt it? reminds me of the people on the extreme cheapskate tv show.

        • +1

Almost same as getting into someone's house and asking them to cook 4 you :)

        • +3

@UglyPanda: I'm thinking that but I'm still thinking that takes balls to do it :p

        • +1

Honestly, $1 is a bit unfair. I'd offer $2-3 for something like that, just so it actually seems like you're covering the effort they're putting in. Other than that, I don't see a problem with this?
It's just one human who already deep fries food for a living, deep frying food for another human, in exchange for money…

        • @dyl: Im now thinking what this guy would do if he visits a brothel !!!

        • @UglyPanda: Well that's a whole different story.. I mean, in that case it's purely a service; there's no physical goods required to be purchased or taken away after a purchase by you..

You claim it's almost the same as asking someone to cook for you after breaking into their house… The two are so far from similar that it's almost insane to compare them.
Offering money for a person to do a service they're employed to do, well now that just sounds like how a business works?

      • Too much risk for $1.

Person could have had anything nasty in them masquerading as an innocent Chiko.

        • +1

I agree. Glad I ordered a burger. Not sure I would have been happy if those Chikos were put in the same vat of oil as my chips.

        • @tightarse:

BTW, how could Coles be so cruel to not include the Bounty ice creams?? :(

          Hope they haven't been dropped.

      • So TA how many times have you been back there to do the same?

    • +2

I've shallow fried, just turning often. Worked ok. Have to do it on medium heat, otherwise get too brown before heating through. Havn't tried in oven.

    • Chiko rolls bring back my childhood memories of stale hot food from the corner shop after school that had been in the warmer since lunch. Yum.

I have tried them in the oven and they are 'just' edible since they come out chewy and tough on the outside. Only do it if you have too.

      • "Chiko rolls bring back my childhood memories of stale hot food from the corner shop after school that had been in the warmer since lunch. Yum."

ahh, just right. and the ends all crunchy.

      • +1

been in the warmer since lunch <— same day, still counts as fresh ;)

    • +1

It's a long way to the shop, if you want a Chiko Roll

  • +3

Not usually a big fan of icecream but I can't recommend the Snickers ones enough. They're amazing.

    • +1

my husband is also addicted to the snickers bars! When we ran out he made me get them at FULL price! Oh the pain ….

  • +19

    Dupe?

Same with the other post for half price peanut butter from woolworths

So all the other 50% offers are no good TA?

  • Local takeaway owner told me that Chiko roles don't have chicken in them, and are vegetarian. Is this true?

    • +1

No chicken but beef, so not vegetarian.

A Chiko roll consists of beef, with a mixture of cabbage, carrot, beans, leeks, onion and barley, which along with some basic seasoning would be semi-pulped and then rolled into a pastry based cylinder tube of egg and flour dough in which the ingredients are deep-fried in vegetable oil.

    • I never thought they had chicken. Beef and veggies is what's in them.

    • -1

the takeaway owner assumed you were a hipster and just said any buzzword to try get a sale. lol

    • I always thought they had chicken in them. lol oops.

This thread has taught me much.

(I don't know if I've ever had a Chiko roll)

  • Yet to try the snickers/Mars.
I got a bunch of cornettos but they don't seem to be as good as when they are from the servo. Maybe freezer at home not cold enough

    • -1

The Mars bars are good,my don't like non frozen snickers so can't comment.

    • Snickers ice cream is the bomb!!!! Don't think - just get a couple of boxes.

    • I seem to have a hit and miss with Cornettos from the supermarkets.
Even when eating them straight away they don't seem the same.

It's almost as if the stock is sometimes not as fresh. Maybe that's why they go on sale?

  • +1

Anyone tried deep fried mars bar? If haven't, try it.

    • Deep fried Oreos are brilliant. The cookie melts underneath the batter.

      My gad.

Gonna be pretty sad if this gets more upvotes than the original deal with all the specials.

Although I thank TA for all his posts, this has been posted already and there is no link to the original post. Seems kinda lame

Anyone tried Zico coconut water before? Any good?

    • I think it's a new product line (correct me if I'm wrong). I haven't noticed it in my local Coles in the past anyway - not long enough to have noticed and give it a shot.

At $3, I think most people who regularly drink coconut water will be giving this a try :)

Genuine question - has anyone ever had a bad coconut water? lol aren't they all pretty much on par? They all come from young coconuts in Thailand. I've tried countless brands and honestly haven't been able to detect much difference (and any difference I imagine I'm detecting, I simply put down to seasonal variation in the fruit itself rather than the brand… I mean, this is a fruit juice bottled directly without any processing or crap added… not from concentrate.. you have to expect it to taste different sometimes, right?)

I keep getting asked by my friends, one in particular recently who just "got into" drinking the stuff, what brands tasted good. I don't get it. lol

      • Some of the coconut waters have sweeteners/sugar added to them.

Most seem to be 100% pure - definitely notice a difference in taste between brands, but not such a difference that I could have a "favorite".

Having said that, a fresh young coconut has a much different taste.

      • I keep getting asked by my friends

@ Turnip, so you do have friends? :b

  • The Zico coconut water is owned by Coca Cola and as with any beverage that becomes popular and threatens Coke sales they have to get their own entrant into the market. This product was actually launched in the US by the Entourage tv show as they started drinking it for a whole season #paidadvertising

I believe the fresh Nudie coconut water sold at Woolies and some convenience stores tastes best followed closely by Emma & Toms product.

The Zico says 100% natural but it just tastes a little sweet for my liking - at least better than drinking Coke and at $3 a litre I will pick some up.

  • +1

Eat the chiko roll and snickers icecream then drink coconut water to wash away the guilt. Sounds like a plan! :P

and when it comes to coconut water, I really like Cocobella (I think that's what it's called) :D

    • Yeah bought some Zico yesterday and definitely didn't taste as good as the Cocobella.

  • For those interested, finally got around to buying some and answering my own question above. I like it, fresh tasting and not sweet or funky tasting like some others. Ingredients, coconut water and preservative, no added sugar. Best served chilled.
