Calling out to all ladies - What would you like as a gift for Valentine's Day?

That time of year is fast approaching and yet again I am stuck scratching my head on what to buy the GF.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Cuddles on the couch watching movies together all day.

Sorry.. bad day. In reality I want it now lol

  • +37

    A boyfriend.

    • +10

First you wanted friends… now you want a boyfriend… I'd highly suggest putting up an ad in the classified =)

      RIP inbox.

    • +11

@turnip, being single is definitely better than being with the wrong person. Just think of all the people who are stuck in a bad relationship, who wish they could be in your shoes.
Btw, you should spoil yourself for v-day because you're so worth it. But do it on the 15th when all the valentine-related gifts will be reduced:)

      • +2

lol yeah, was only kidding. Don't want a boyfriend.

Who has time for that when there is OzB?!

        • +2

Lol you guys could ozb together on v-day.

Perfect date, no need to leave the house and you both get your daily dose of ozb.

        • +3

@ProjectZero: we'll be very busy on v-day. We're having a bunch of kids coming over for a mexican-themed party followed by a sleepover. The oldest is 10 and the youngest 2. 3 of them still bedwet.
@turnip, if you'll be in the Parkdale/mentone area on that day and is bored, pm me or wicket . We sure could use an extra pair of hands :)

        • @Jar Jar Binks:

I sure hope you are taking wicket out after that… sounds like she'd deserve to after having to look after so many kids lol.

    • @turnip, why did you request to have your comment deleted? I thought it was really romantic.I'm so totally stealing that idea ;)

and yes, when I said "touched", I really meant "ravished" :b

  • +7

I hear jarjarbinks possibly has something for sale. If you want to make your girlfriend very happy it would be perfect.

    • +3

Also, make the OP broke. =P

    • +1

      lol

  • +1

Not a girl, never will be. Merely wanted to come in and learn XD

As a guy, my go to would be flowers and a special pamper day for the missus?

  • +19

Don't go with the usual stuff. Get her something that shows you actually know her and listen when she talks. I personally would be over the moon happy with a tub of peanut butter ice cream. It is not expensive but something I really enjoy and hubby never goes to the supermarket as he leaves grocery shopping to me. Flowers say 'I have put zero thought into this, I don't know what you actually like, I hope this will do'

    • +5

I wish my wife was that easy to please !

    • +4

I did just that "listening" thing with my first gf and got into trouble. Back in the days when electric toothbrush was new, she kept telling me that she wanted one and I listened and got it for her as Valentine's Day. Guess what?! She told me off.

      • +1

My mother in law once got me an electric pink toothbrush. I mentioned it once as something that would be good. But being a bargain hunter it was not something I would buy myself (we just bought our first house and money was tight). Your (ex?) gf was/is an idiot, electric toothbrush is the best gift ever (as long as the recipient still has teeth)

      • +16

Guess what?! She told me off.

Maybe she replaced you with the electric toothbrush?

        • +2

^ this. I once 'dated' a girl who used her electric battery-operated toothbrush as a vibrator.

        • +7

@Jar Jar Binks: Taking 'good oral hygiene' to the next level.

          Kinda.

          No?

        • +1

@waterlogged turnip: lol . Yep. It was freaky.

        • @Jar Jar Binks: then she married you?

        • @squashy: Nah…that was the time I wanted to be a buddhist monk.

    • +1

Don't go with the usual stuff

but also don't try to get too creative…that almost always backfire.

No answers will be truly satisfactory due to my unavailability.

I would say buy something from mimco - David jones has 25% off and the things labeled 'mimco loves" are generally better. Nice jewelry from Tiffany if possible. Thomas Szabo has more reasonably priced jewelry, and you might be able to find a charm there that means something special to you to personalize it. Anything from Mecca Cosmetica - just make sure you say her name when you order it so she can easily return it or swap it, and it will get her closer to qualifying for the beauty loop. Otherwise if you don't want to go so girly, something like a nice outdoor chair or outdoor seat? Some reidel glasses for special occasions (the hard wearing degustazione are good for everyday use and are on sale in store at David jones). Cocktail glasses and a proper bar set (wheel and barrow have good options). The home section of country road has nice ideas. Maybe a special dinner with matched wines at a nice restaurant. Glasshouse candles (one of the nicest brands) have a limited edition candle out called a dozen roses http://www.adorebeauty.com.au/glasshouse/glasshouse-verona-c… which might be better than flowers. Hope that helps.

I'm thinking about getting the missus 400kg of rags.

    • +11

      For those heavy flow days.

    • I laughed so hard at that comment..

  • The gift that makes me happy is something from Tiffanys.

    • +35

This response amuses me somewhat (apologies, I don't mean to be cruel, I'm just super cynical and joyless like this)…

I just find it weird for someone to say, basically, that the gift that they ideally want is a brand. "something" from.. not even anything specific/meaningful or personal you've already had your eye on… just… something. Haven't even seen it yet, don't know what it is, but 'it will make me happy'

I know this comes across as bitchy judgmental. Had to say it. Feel free to neg me :P

      • +12

maybe it is a half eaten sandwich from (a bin in) Tiffanys.

        • Who eats in Tiffanys? The only food I have seen is the scotch they offer you in their lounge.

        • +1

          Audrey Hepburn

@JB1: But that was outside of Tiffany's looking in!

        • +1

          @moogi27:

Fair enough.. never seen the movie!

To be honest, it's pretty sad when grown women get excited over cheap Tiffany Silver jewellery.

I can understand white gold or platinum, but silver?

        • @JB1:

To be honest, it's pretty sad when grown women get excited over cheap Tiffany Silver jewellery.

Cos they is shiny and puuurdy!

        • @waterlogged turnip:

          Silver tarnishes pretty bloody quickly.

        • @JB1:

Not if you're like me… for some reason my silver don't tarnish at all… in fact, they somehow get shinier… Not my words either… my relos all say it.

        • @JB1: I'm not particularly fond of jewellery but I would prefer silver to gold just based upon colour preferences/how it looks like on pale skin..

        • @moogi27:

Then white gold or platinum for you.

I'm not a fan of yellow gold.. reminds me too much of a rapper or pimp, hence why I wear white gold. Apart from watches the only pieces of jewellery I own is a white gold ring and necklace.

      • +1

No negs required. I like finely crafted quality jewellery.

        • Nah, you like the duck egg blue boxes and Tiffany's shopping bags,
          because you are a poseur.

        • +1

@King Tightarse: Nah, I think it's more about the look on their friends faces when they say they've received a gift from Tiffany's.

          Dat status.

        • @waterlogged turnip:

          Dat status.

          "#materialgirl"

          lol

        • -1

@ProjectZero: What do people like more than spamming facebook/instagram to brag about material goods…

        • @King Tightarse:

You can actually get plain bags and I have requested this in the past. It's not the sort of attention you want to draw to yourself.

        • @pink:
As opposed to name dropping it here..
"Who eats in Tiffanys? The only food I have seen is the scotch they offer you in their lounge"
          #posing

        • @King Tightarse: What's your problem? Why call me derogatory terms? In the end, I've studied hard, got a good job and work hard. My upbringing means I enjoy a good bargain, which is why I'm here. But I only enjoy bargains on things of quaity. At the end of the day, if I like jewellry or accessories from Tiffany's or any other designer brand, then that's my choice. In the same way that I don't call you or your lucky partner names because you like jewellry from wherever you choose to shop. All I did was offer a suggestion to the op. If you don't like it, then so be it. But there's no need to call me names.

        • @pink:
Hey nothing personal Pink, when I see posing, name dropping or pretension I virtually have to say something - I am Aussie after all. Mentioning Tiffanys as an option for the OP, sure good idea. Repeatedly name dropping it and going on about the free scotch in their lounge = pure posing. Aussies hate poseurs in case you are late to notice. This is a bargain website, What did you think would happen when you posed about Toffanies?

    • I love how we seem to be tolerant of Apple fanboys, but when someone likes another brand, all of a sudden it's an amusing or bad thing?

      • +8

Since when was OzB tolerant of Apple Fanboys? :p

By comparison it would be weird for someone to just ask for something from Apple, right?

        Edit: spelling

      • +4

FWIW, I have a strong dislike of Apple and Apple fangirls and boys, too.

and I also see the great irony of me whinging about the culture of consumption, when I'm on a bargain hunting site with a strong 'buy it even if you don't need it' mentality :P if it makes anyone feel any better, I dislike myself in equal amounts to anyone I criticise or judge..

        • +2

I wasn't aiming my comment at you in particular, but I don't think liking a particular brand is a bad thing at all.

There are many brands I have loyalties to for different reasons, some practical, some emotional. An example is Toyota. I love Toyota because my grandfather drove Toyotas, then my dad drove Toyotas and I've always driven Toyotas and they've always worked well and even though I know there are many other cars out there that are equally good and reliable, I like Toyotas for that emotional reason.

Similarly, I'm sure we can all find examples where we often prefer a particular brand. For example, some people will only look at Sony TVs…etc.

I don't think it's really fair on pink that liking something from Tifanny & Co is a bad thing, I know that it probably sounds shallow here, but it's not a bad thing.

        • @paulsterio: Yeah I know it wasn't directed at me, s'all good. Was just throwing in my opinion anyway. Cos I'm annoying like that :P

Brand loyalty like your example is another thing (or maybe it's not…). I can understand that to an extent (I guess depending on the justification/reasoning, though I guess it is still subjective judgment, so that raises the question of what's a 'good' reason, and what's a 'bad' or wrong reason to like or be loyal to a brand, etc). I too am fond of Toyotas. My reasons are pretty much the same as yours - grew up with them, know from personal experience just how reliable they are, and economical (the models we've owned anyway). Emotional reasons, yes, undoubtedly… so yeah, can emotional reasons be wrong/right? is a good point.

The Tiffany example is just something that doesn't really sit right with me personally. Again, no issue with pink at all lol as a lot here would be based on assumptions only, but anyway… My point is, we all tend to evaluate other people's choices and decisions through the lens of our individual values. I like practicality. Something must serve a valid (to me) purpose and be functional and make life easier ideally etc, I think carefully about purchases before diving in especially expensive ones. I don't wear jewellery - only a watch. Kinda sums it up there lol. But yeah… are my values any 'better' than someone who finds happiness in things that don't necessarily serve a function other than aesthetics? No, not at all.

          So…

this is hurting my brain a bit. I'm very nihilistic. Once I start questioning things, it all falls apart and means nothing. I'm gonna shut up now :P

        • +1

          @paulsterio:

This exactly. I have a particular soft spot for Tiffanys because the first piece of jewellery I received from my better half was my engagement ring from there.

I must say, if you are an Apple fangirl/boy, Im sure you wouldn't say no to any item gifted to you from the Apple store!

    • +9

Last year I went to Tiffany's in Paris. When I got there the shop was being renovated and rubble everywhere. I got my girl a HUGE rock from Tiffany's.. Cost me nothing ;-)

      • I'm sure she was very impressed….and the people in customs even more so! :)

  • +4

Food/confectionery! A nice meal :) Candles/scent diffusers are also nice, I like the french pear scented Ecoya candle..

    • -1

Man, my post was kinda food/chocolate-oriented, involved a face (potentially a 'smiley' one), definitely involved a pair (of peeps), AND a 'scent'; yet mine was unpublished, cause it was 'inappropriate'?!?

SHEESH. It's a fine, fine line.

    • These also come in 12 or 7 inches for those more or less adventurous..

  • Cheers for all the replies! I have now got a few ideas along with being very entertained with some of the suggestions :D

  • Top quality gourmet ice cream (prob chocolate).
Bf/hubby to have organised a night out or event (eg swim with dolphins)…esp for fellas who usually have life organised for them.
    Quality time.

  • +4

For me, I would like to receive a holiday, be it as close or as far as he can afford, I dont mind, as long as we can have some intimate getaway.

    • +10

be it as close or as far as he can afford, I dont mind, as long as we can have some intimate getaway.

"Trip to the back of the car it is…"

lol, sorry had to say it =)

    • +1

Yes, a quick intimate getaway in the back of the car then send her away for the weekend so you can have some 'quiet time' without her

      • +1

        Ruthless!

        • but romantic :p

        • +1

What if her name isn't Ruth?

  • +6

Buy some rose petals and tea candles, some champagne, oysters and cook or buy her favourite meal, spread the rose petals around the case and the tea candles, do it at night. Surprise her with a bunch of red roses and a glass of champagne, have the entree of oysters and then continue onto her favourite meal that you cooked or bought if you can't cook. For dessert just buy her favourite dessert and drive to a romantic lookout at night.

    • +1

      How romantic :)

told bf i want a romantic getaway to a nearby tourist attraction….it will be a fantastic V Day gift!

Not related to the post, but I would like to buy something for my mom.
I am thinking of jewelry or handbag, my budget is < 500 . what do you guys think? especially ladies :) any recommended stores?

    • Check out Angus & Coote and Prouds for nice gold/emerald/sapphire jewelry below $500…

      • ill check these stores out thanks

    • Rose gold or gold jewellery sounds nice.

      • any recommended place in melbourne? i have a limited knowledge re: this jewelry stuff

    • A lot of nice watches for lady on that price brackets. Not the auromatic one at that price but some tissot or some swiss watch brand usually makes good nice watch face with quartz at that price

  • +3

It depends what your girlfriend is like. These are things that I would like. Plan a surprise picnic, take her somewhere nice and romantic and have rug to spread out on the grass and a lovely picnic meal with a bottle of bubbly. If you get really keen get some rose petals (sneak around the neighbours the night before) and sprinkle them round your picnic.
Can you cook? cook her a lovely meal, put candles round and some nice music on and cook what she likes. Go for a nice drive and end up with fish and chips on the beach.
I personally am not that into flowers - they are expensive and look nice for a couple of days and then they die.
Get her a voucher for a massage or facial - or do a massage class together.
Just show her that you have put some effort and thought into it and I am sure that she will love it

Type of gift will depend on what sort of girl she is, her financial background and family upbringing. If she likes high end designer bags (like Chanel, Hermes, LV), a nice homemade picnic or meal without a fancy gift accompaniment (like pandora bracelet, Tiffany jewellery, branded sunnies) will probably disappoint her.

    • +5

You seem to be describing gaudy nouveau riche girls.

    • +8

and if your gf is disappointed because you made a nice homemade picnic or meal without a fancy gift accompaniment, then you're probably best off ditchin' that ungrateful bi…

      uh bird ;)

      • right on!

    FLOWERRRSSSSSSSSSSS
any gal that says flowers are a waste of money is only saying that because they don't get them!
and even if you think they are a waste of money to us females they're the best thing ever! :D
my boyfriend trys to suprise me with flowers monthly :) it's so sweet!

    BUT not only flowers!
maybe jewellery! pandora, tiffany whatever! depends on the girl! im not picky so my bf just gets me things from prouds!

or even book a little escape for the two of you! cuteeeeeeeee!

If you are buying this girl a v day present, consider a new keyboard - r,s, and e appear to be broken

Heres one for $2, surely she is worth it
