Are they having ones in sydney?

  • Ugh I wish I was in Victoria.. I was in Sydney's Chinatown today and they were handing out red pockets, but doubt they had money in them.

  • OP - you had me at FREE

I got $6 in my red packet at Box Hill. For those folks who are saying not very nice stuff about this Chinese custom, for the record, it is auspicious to give money to people in red packets during Chinese New Year. It is called lucky money for a reason. Good on Changjiang Express for using this as a brand awareness raising initiative.

The company's business is in mainland China. A typical 1st gen mainlander would have replied (angrily) that if they had the money to give for free they should send them to help the needy poorer fellow countrymen in mainland. Since I haven't seen such a post, unless negged out of the way, I assume there are not many mainland Chinese here in ozbargain. (I am - less than 1/2 year in aussie. The other possibility is: it feels awkward to admit that there are poors in China in the first place hence they said nothing - which is partly due to the rich Chinese investor stereotype.)

I think it's just risky marketing: from their website they mainly target 1st gen mainlanders who still have close tie to mainland (to use their mainland express service e.g. for cans of baby formula), even though they advertised it only in simplified Chinese, huge risk that a lot of those who got their money ain't their target audience. Their aussie website is Chinese-only! If they intended to create brand awareness to aussies in general they would have had English websites before the costy campaign. They are over confident to think 1st gens won't tell, and they must be amazed to see a lot of whities there. A better targeted solution would be free shipment of a can of baby formula to China (mainland) in Spring Festival.

In that sense, it's really "lucky money": they made a mistake and you get the money, isn't it lucky?

    • No, 1st gen mainlanders wouldn't complain because they lined up to get the money too. A gain for them :D
If they had missed out though, probably…

(Your English is pretty good considering you've only been here for 1/2 year.)

You guys do understand that China is a lot richer than Australia. So it makes sense if there is a business run by Chinaman giving free money to Australians. I am pretty sure there will be more like this in the future. So just stay tune to OzBargain for further money giveaways by Chinaman.

    • not per capita! (in response to "China is a lot richer than Australia")

      • China doesn't have centerlink thats why.

        • No, but they have a generous pension which allows you to retire from the age of 50 (Female).

Not per capita. In terms of wealth per capita, Hong Kong, Luxembourg and the United States are at the very top. Australia is ranked 15th. China is ranked much lower.

The chinese you see here in Australia represent (I'm pulling stats out of my arse here) probably the top 5% richest in their country and China features a high degree of income inequality, and the gap is widening every year.

About 1/3 of China's wealth is owned by 1% of it's population now
