$700 for a 4 year old used mac.. Seems like a rip.

    • Given current equivalent model is $1349 standard price I would say you are right

You can check other website's offer, our price is cheap

    • $20 shipping as well.

    • +1

Macs keep their value pretty well. A google around shows that $700 seems about right for them.

I know non-Mac users don't get it but market value is what market value is.

Not really a bargain if you can see the same price everywhere. OP should be posting his/her deal on Gumtree or eBay. Ozbargainers look for real bargains here, not almost or nearly there bargains. You get what I mean. :)

        • Fair point. Was just commenting on the whole selling a 4 year old computer being a rip point. I agree though, they should be selling them cheaper if they want it to be a bargain on here.

      • agreed. the price seemed reasonable for the spec listed, and is worth looking at for someone who is only keen on an imac.

i was in the market recently for a used imac so been looking at prices and spec extensively for the past few weeks. with this deal you get an i5 core, 8gb ram, and 90 days warranty. so technically should be better than buying from private seller on ebay or gumtree (hopefully ozbrokerauction is good with warrantly).

on paper imac looked to be overpriced compared to PC, but different people have different preferences and for someone who is after an imac and nothing else then this seemed like a reasonble deal.

btw.. i have windows, apple, and android devices and enjoyed them all ;)

    • If you want to run OS X I don't think it's that bad a deal, although you could argue the case for a Mac Mini instead. For someone like my mother who only wants to browse the web and use an office program it'd probably be a perfectly capable system, assuming I didn't want to go Windows.

      • I thought about a Mac mini for the old man but it meant I had to buy a keyboard, mouse, monitor etc. Was just easier to get an iMac.

    Warranty:
    • 90 Days

    Availability:
    • Please allow up to 2-4 weeks for delivery

Ok. Thanks. Does the warranty start on delivery or purchase date. If it's purchase date you could potentially lose 33% of your warranty period while the unit is in transit

    • It starts on the day you receive

    • Warranty doesn't have a time limit under the Australian consumer law. It must be a reasonable amount of time for the product.

      • That would likely apply to new items. You can't realistically expect a 4 year old item to last another 4 years based on it being 'new' to yourself.

        • +1

No it applies to all products sold in trade and commerce - includes used products. But you're right, you wouldn't expect a warranty on a used product to last as long as a new product - but it's about what's reasonable. You'd assume some sort of quality assurance has occurred before they were on sold. I think 3 months would be too short a time even in these circumstances and 6 months to 1 year is more reasonable.

My point though was to highlight the amount of time businesses give these things is irrelevant as the law specifically avoid time limited warranties in that way.

you lost me at 10.9 mavericks…

    • +2

AFAIK, upgrade to Yosemite is free.

      • It is and it'll work fine. It may miss out on Handover support due to it having Bluetooth 2.x, but otherwise it should be fully functional.

I run Yosemite on an early 13" 2011 MBP and it runs fine for what is a lower spec system.

        • I run Yosemite find on a 2009 Macbook (albeit with an SSD and 4GB of ram)

        • @SirFlibbled: Yeah I upgraded my MacBook to a Seagate SSHD and I think 16GB Ram. Didn't notice much improvement after moving from 8GB of RAM mind you, other than Parallels Desktop running smoother.

    • +1

      you lost me at 699.98

  • +1

i still prefer Mavericks but Yosemite is a free download/upgrade

  • better off buying a new mac mini with a cheap monitor.

Buying a 4 year old computer with only a 90 day warranty is madness.

    • +4

You can't get a quad core i5 in a Mac Mini, and by the time you've bought the HDMI to DVI adaptor, mouse and keyboard, an external DVD ROM, put 8GB in it (non user upgradeable anymore) you're over $1k without a monitor. That's based on the slowest dual core i5 (1.4gHz, boost to 2.4). Also, no discrete graphics.

Different things for different people of course.

  • A word of caution buying these models. While macs usually last much better than most PCs. The HDDs are pretty much the same as any normal PC would come with.

In my experience HDDs start to become unreliable at the 3 year mark and become quite unreliable at the 5 year mark. These models are 4 years old….

Many HDDs last 10 years plus, but you are rolling the dice, as iMacs are difficult and expensive to repair, due to their design. If the HDD fails then you will end up paying more than you would for a brand new flash drive equipped iMac.

Just buy a new one, if you want a bargain, wait for the 10% deals from DSE that happen all the time.

As per above Ebay link, this is market value at best, but regularly go cheaper. Of you're going to advertise second used junk on here, make sure it's ridiculously dirt cheap otherwise take it to Gumtree.
