  • to the techies here.. how is this tab by the tab.. i mean looking to buy one for general home use… nothing too fancy.. but at 268 seems to be cheap but not sure why am i compromising…

    • Not a techie, have a Tab 3 (got it as a bonus) and it is one awful thing. Whether Tab 4 is dramatically different, not sure. But Tab 3 got horrible reviews and needs to be hacked to be any use.

      • Is that Tab 3 lite or Tab 3? To be honest, Tab 3 line looks awful in terms of spec. Tab 3 lite looks more awful. Tab 4 is slightly better (welp, technically similar), but not sure how'd that translate.

        • Tab 3 normal, tablet 10.1". Funny enough, the problems had nothing to do with the spec, apparently the specs were fine (and even good) for the period, it is all the fault of the horrible OS Samsung put with it.

        • @Lord_Sif: …Clovertrail? Atom CPU is still not completely compatiable with Android, some apps simply don't work with Atom and some have performance issues with atom CPU I've heard. I'd assume it was worse back in the days. Though yeah, TouchWiz is slow and bloated compared to stock Android.

    • The screen is the most important bit of the tablet. I have a Cube u30GT with a 1280 x 800 display and when compared to the newer ASUS tablet that replaced it (MemoPad FHD10) the 1920 x 1200 display looks absolutely glorious in comparison.

The MemoPad FHD10 however lacks a good GPU so it's not exactly the best tab for gaming, but it's absolutely wonderful for watching 1080p movies on, and reading ebooks or comics.

      • True, and usually, once you go up, you can never move down to something worse…

Though, I think there is some trade off, if your tablet has awful performance (i.e. CPU/GPU's bad, 1GB ram, all those typical budget tablet stuff), I'd think that you'd want something lower res so that the apps at least run.

That being said, I'd invest bit more to get something that runs FHD fluently rather than get this (but that's just my opinion).

This is where the Tab S/TabPRO line is so good, that screen looks absolutely glorious (especially 2560x1600 on an 8.4" screen, ridiculously nice).

Still not a fan of Sammy's software addons though.

  • i really dont wanna go other brands.. just tossing between ipad and this galaxy tab… price is huge difference.. ipad is any day better but considering its just for home use for either kids around 5 & 8 years and parents who are not really great with technology

My personal opinion is that you should consider TabPro 10.1 from JB HiFi for $400 as an option, if you want compromise between price and performance (I haggled $30 off, getting it to $370, didn't get it in the end. Perhaps you could do the same). Much higher resolution, better SoC, etc. Also as it is part of their premium tablet line (sorta), at least you won't be left behind heaps in terms of updates as well like their budget line.

    • I think that the real Samsung competitor to an iPad (current mini or Air) would really be the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 or 10.1. The Tab 4 is not comparable in screen resolution and speed to any of these.

    • Agree with AznMitch….

I bought Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 from JB HiFi, when they were selling this for $338. But I ended up getting that for $313, by using a Woolworths gift cards (which I bought from Groupon 7.5% off deal) to buy JB HiFi gift cards.

And can confirm that this one is heaps better than Tab 4.0. It is reasonably fast enough and screen is absolutely amazing fpr watching movies. And with battery backup, I would say It is pretty good.

this is really a tab for non tech people

i wouldnt expect people to buy it here as it hasnt got the resolution or ram or cpu power to be that special and coupled with samsung's parlous history on software updates…

but for normal people, they love it

    • Agree. We still have a tab 3 and for what we do - emails, web browsing, keeping recipes handy, watching movies in bed, occasional game - it works fine.

  • Slow processor, very low outdated resolution. Better add a bit money and buy a proper device, not many user will be happy with it.

  • thanks guys for letting me know the drawbacks of Tab4.. i think i am leaning towards ipad mini or the ipad air which is 469 at officeworks

TabPro is on par with Tab S in terms of performance at least. Just saying.

I am so jealous. Should've gotten it when it was $338.

It's really decent tablet, they've just realised that adding AMOLED actually differentiates their tablet further, that's the only reason I can see why they are discontinuing TabPro line (or it might be another one getting released soon) (And it might be because their AMOLED manufacturing skills have increased enough to produce larger screens at cheaper price). TabPro could've easily been the Samsung tablet flagship of 2014, if it weren't for Tab S.

    • Decent idea. Got an Air 2 and it is far better than my Tab 3.

I got a tab 4 from the mother promotion, glad to say it was for free, the thing is crappy, slow, laggy and often non responsive.

    Buy a real tablet.
