5c… (I have my reasons, I'd post my link up but would hate to identify myself)

    • +21

Yep, much better deal to pay 5c for the Slurpee and donate directly to the Children’s Hospital.

That way you can claim the tax deduction..

      Win-Win…

      • +5

Doesn't it have to be minimum $2 to be tax deductible.

        • +27

Why would you donate less than $2 to the Children’s Hospital ?

        • -4

@jv: For a donation to be tax deductible you aren't allowed to receive anything in return. Further, the recipient of the money must be a deductible gift recipient which 7/11 are not

        • +4

@antt: maybe you should work on your reading there. He said to give 5c to 7-11 and then donate to the charity yourself so you can make it a tax deduction.

          Did you read my comment?

I said to donate directly t the Hospital

        • @jv: Oh whoops, someone misread your post. My bad.

        • @jv:
Sorry, I was reply to Tomsco, still getting used to this website

        • @antt: Responding to?

        • @jv:
The best comment from you jv I have ever had the pleasure to read ;)

    • name the price you want to pay for a Large Slurpee

      Negative infinity! :D

and we’ll donate EVERY CENT to the children’s hospital in your state or territory

      Oooh. :#

    • 1c and pay by card?

      • +1

Why pay by card when you could pay by cash?

        • reward points perhaps ???

        • Because there's the possibility of it being rounded up to 5c which happens at some stores.

        • +2

          @ronnknee:

possibility of it being rounded up to 5c

          I don't think that is legal…

        • @jv: Well jv, your opinion doesn't matter without anything to back your claim.

        • @ronnknee:

          I shall back his claim!

        • Because Australia doesn't have 1c cash. Hence ronnknee's point about rounding to 5c

Or have I missed a currency denomination after 2 years here?

EDIT: Never thought about rounding down to 0

        • @evilplan: I am perfectly aware that rounding to the nearest 5 cents for cash payments is applicable for almost all cases but how about the special cases for less than 2 cents or less? Both the articles are really under the presumption that the transaction is greater than 5 cents (because how often do you price things for 1 cent or 2 cents). If you really round down 1 cent or 2 cents to zero, then you end up not paying anything at all and not really completing a purchase.

  • +1

yes because 7/11 donating all their money to childrens hospitals is better than saying 'hey everyone, free slurpies…' and losing money AND getting nothing given to charity.

at least this way even all you tight fisted fellows can pay 5cents, 5 cents is better than nothing to the hospital.

  • +2

be a good guy or girl, give em a couple bucks or more :)

    • No, 7/11 can get 5cents from me and I can give the hospital $2 myself and get the tax deduction

      • whichever way you want to do it is all good :)

      • +10

I bet you won't do it though.

        • +1

Probably not to "Childrens Hospital Fund" since we already donate to the Mater Childrens Hospital directly. But still I'll up it by a few more bucks if I grab a 5c slurpee

        • Good man/woman :)

  • -2

Is it possible to pay $O?

    • $0 = Free…
      So yes…

    • +2

If they don't allow it, name the price at 2c and choose to pay cash..

      • +1

Thats mean spirited and defeats the purpose of the day/event.

Great gesture by 7-Eleven. Thanks for the post OP.

  • +1

I hope there isn't a rush of admissions to these hospitals with many cases of "slurpee brain freeze" on Good Friday

  • +1

Great way for both the hospital to win, and 7-11 to win through "goodwill marketing" :D

  • +7

We should turn this around and see who can pay the most for a slurpee. Just this once I'm sure we can all afford to get ripped off.
    Anyone up for the Challenge?

    • "Name your price" Chicken game

    • +1

Rather just pay 7/11 the usual price of a large which is like $3 anyway and give $25 or so to the RCH directly and get a tax deduction as per JV's comment. Don't see why 7/11 should get all the credit for raising $$$$$$ for the charity.

      • Problem is how many people will actually go and pay a low price for a slurpee then make a donation.
It also shouldn't matter who gets the credit for it. Id rather see 7/11 claim credit for a $100,000 donation than $50,000 anonymous donations.

        • +1

          Reduces my taxable income

  • You can 1c with eft card or credit! It all adds up at the end anyway.

  • +6

They should have selected diabetes research…. After all, slurpees…

  • nice! totally gotta get involved

  • +7

Each store should have a person with a loud hailer. Every time a miser comes in and says "2 cents", the person broadcasts "Thank you sir/madam for your 2 cents donation. That will really help the kids who are sick". (Note: a miser, by definition* is unlikely to have donated directly to the relevant charity.)

*Miser: a person who hoards wealth and spends as little money as possible

penny-pincher, pinchpenny, niggard, cheese-parer, Scrooge; hoarder, saver, collector, gatherer, accumulator, magpie, squirrel; ascetic, puritan; skinflint, meanie, money-grubber, cheapskate; tightwad; tight-arse

    • Sounds like the definition of an Ozbargainer!

      • +1

The very antithesis: a miser's wallet has to be prised open, whereas an Ozbargainer's is never closed.

  • It would certainly something if i can name my price for fuel.

  • +9

I just went to my local and almost everyone was buying a slurpee…..3 people infront of me in the line paid at least $10 each. Was a very proud of humanity moment. Well done peeps. I dont know about other states but in Victoria, Good Friday has always been associated with fundraising for the childrens hospital.

    • How much did you get your one for ? :D

      • I didn't buy a slurpee, but they had tin rattlers at the front of the store (hoppers crossing) popped my tenner in there. I've also coughed up at 3 intersections whilst driving this morning.

  • Have to wonder whether staff would allow someone to buy 50 slurpees for $0.50?

  • I just got one for $0.40c - the guy seemed fine with that.
