    Hamilton will win

    • +1

There's no stopping Mercedes…way too dominant

  • -1

I am confused, isn't the Grand Prix over?

  • Hard to plan 1 year ahead but it's a good deal :)

  • +3

Hopefully it will be a more interesting race.

  • +2

Sunday only. Would have rathered a saturday ticket and watched on the big screen sunday.

    • +1

Exactly what I did. The lack of TV screens around the track is a massive let down. Extremely hard to gauge what is happening around the track.

      • Wait so you booked Sunday still?

        • No I haven't. I've gone for Qualifying for the last 4 years and have always watched the race from home.

  • +4

    Here's hoping it'll be as heart-stopping as this year's! /s

  • …& they get your money a year in advance…
    No bargain here!

    • +9

Well it'd be pretty hard to double your money in a year through interest/investments etc, so it's not that bad a deal…

      • +2

The 5 dog at Grafton is paying even money, and probably a more interesting race to watch than the '15 melb GP.

    • Half price seems like a solid deal to me.

  • +1

2 for 1 offer seems to be working for Saturday Qualifying as well. F1 site says Sunday only, but when you click the Book Now button for Saturday Only, the Dan's Shout 2 For 1 Offer is available for that too. Didn't purchase myself, but the pre-purchase total looked right.

    • +1

Yep purchased for the Sat. Worked fine. Strange they only advertised the Sunday :) Thanks Toasty

  • And considering there is no dates set for the season yet…

  • -1

    Quite a risk..

The way F1 has degraded in last 12 months

    22 Cars started 2014. 13 Cars started in 2015

Threats of teams pulling out, Boring races due to dominance of some teams
and some teams forgetting software is required to start their cars whilst other teams don't know that 3 drivers is too many for their 2 cars

Wouldn't surprise me if this whole thing collapses by next year..

    • Really? Wow that's insane…didn't realise things were that bad when drivers get paid a mint!

      • +4

Yeah, but he's sensationalising what has happened. The 2 Manor cars didn't run because the team only came out of receivership 2 weeks ago, so they are running with no staff and little equipment. They turned up in Australia to tick a box, they were never going to run. Then 2 cars broke down on the warm up lap, and Bottas pulled out the morning of the race with a back injury. There are 20 cars in the field. So they have only lost 1 team (Caterham) and one new team Haas is joining next year.

        • +2

Meant to + this comment but accidentally negged so I can't now. This is exactly the case and it's nice to see someone with good knowledge of the sport contributing. The circumstances around the diminished field in Melbourne were very out of the ordinary and unlikely to occur again. From someone who has watched nearly every F1 race in the last 15-20 years.

        • +1

@GregRust: Yeah, I haven't missed a single race in 20 years, no matter where I was in the world, I always made a way to find the race.

        • @GregRust:

But would you say the sport is heading closer to or further from a spectacular season like 2012?

        • @Grillman: further from. Renault have mucked up big time. But not as badly as Honda. Absolute laughing stock.

        • @thorton82:

On the contrary, I think the Honda project has potential. Yes, Melbourne was far from a glorious return to F1, but they were only running the engine at 63% power. Once it has been developed a bit and made more reliable, they will crank it up and I think you'll see it right up the pointy end. It will just need a bit of time and a lot of patience from the fans.

Renault on the other hand have gone backwards since last season, for sure.

        • @GregRust: Honda had over a year to sort it out, they have failed miserably. Renault are in trouble. Apart from being down on peak horsepower, they have a terrible power curve too.

        • @thorton82:

We'll have to agree to disagree on the Honda point then. The other teams had much longer to develop their engines and we're only one race into the first season of their project. I'm more inclined to reserve judgement until later in the year.

      • -1

Some drivers get paid a mint. Looking at the 2014 figures…

Alonso 22 million euros, Vettel 22 million euros, Hamilton 20 million euros.

At the other end of the scale…

Bianchi 0.5 million euros (turned into a vegetable in Japan)
        Ericsson 0.15 million euros

    • +2

It's not in good shape and its best years certainly seem well behind it.

But a few down votes on your post proves there are still a lot of ignorant fans out there in denial. They don't understand that we want what's best for the sport and that is not what is happening currently. The lack of competitiveness is absurd and the way the bosses despise the poorer teams is hideous.

      • +4

        Thanks Grill

Yes I been watching F1 for also a long time.

I remember the days when cars were fast and noisy. Most (All?) track records have not been broken in 7 or more years. There was great racing where drivers drove flat out with near empty fuel tanks and refilled during races.

Now days its all about engine conservation, tyre conservation and fuel conservation. Drivers are often in a situation where they cant afford to chase another driver as they dont have the tyres or fuel to do so..

I also expect with only 1/2 the races on FTA this year it will lose some appeal in Australia.

        • That is so true. Especially when shitty pirellis blowing up.

  • -4

You sure it's in Melbourne next year?

    • I think someone told me the current contract ended this year.

      • Nope, The Napthine government extended the contract until 2020.

  • -1

Already making a loss on next years race, nice one vic goverenment!

    • Clipsal 500 in Adelaide makes a profit every year. Melbourne chose the right race to wrangle away from SA.

      • +1

Im STILL bitter, damn 'mexicans' stealing our Grand Prix
        Good deal though….bastards…

      • The vic government hides the figures every year, normally cause the shelling out more to host the grand prix (figures range from $50-56millon each year) then gets returned to their coffersthrough ticket sales and tourism ($35-40million each year), and the licence to hold the race goes up every year normally so the vic government looses money every year without doubt.
The attendence fugures are rubbish for a city of nearly 4 million people, jeff kennet promised 500,000 people when he pinched the race! Lol, nice one. Barely cracked 120000 on race day, average about 100,000, in the twenty years its been hosted in melb. By comparison the clipsal 500 sees about 85,000 on sunday, and thats from a city 1/3(speculative) the size of melb, by extrapolation and conservative esitmations that would mean race day attendance in adelaide would be 200,000, which isn't unreasonable as the last race day for the grand prix in adelaide was 210,000 before it went to melbourne.

        • +2

But dude, like the v8 supercars, Adelaide sucks.

        • @thorton82: can't say i'm a fan either, but beauty is in eye of the beholder, melb sucks in so many ways adelaide doesn't! Bit thats another debate.
How many governments, companies or oeganisations do you know would host an event or whatever where they consistently make a loss of upwards of 30% of their investment year on year and be proud of it!?!? Only a victorian!

        • @sigh:

What's lost on a single week reaps tourism benefits that are hard to tally in not only the week around the city/state, but months later.

        • @linton: like i said earlier they estimate the returns in total for the race and all the associated tourism with it has only ever been up to $40 mil, in revenue back to the government, yes businesses and what not have benefitted but can you justify your government wasting $10million+ year in year out on a fancy car race that has worse attendance records then something like the victorian derby horse race which is one day and costs taxpayers a miniscule amount in comparison but bigger returns for state coffers?

  • Got my 4 day pass. Counting down the days. The last live race I saw was MW's 2012 win at Silverstone…an omen for Dan next year?? :-)

  • +3

I have been an F1 fan for over 20 years. Watched almost every race. F1 has had a serious problem for many years now. Only 2 or 3 teams are serious contenders most years. The cars are very progressive in terms of technology but fans want to hear the scream of F1 not the regenerative braking of a Prius. Now F1 is so expensive that even the back marker teams can't get to the start line while paying their drivers 1/100th of what the top drivers get.

I'm reluctantly getting Foxtel installed this year solely because Foxtel has pinched half the races from One. This will further reduce viewership and popularity of F1 as only 30% of Australians have access to Foxtel (using very generous statistics including all non active customers).

    • +2

With BBC iPlayer & getflix, I watch all the F1 quals, races, but I prefer the highlights, as the races are not really full of action any more. The TEN coverage is terrible, ads, commentators just taking about Daniel the Aussie all the time.

Last year Rosberg said he had the pace to lap the entire field during last years Melbourne GP, but of course the team switches the engine to a slower mode, to conserve the engine for future races. I like the move towards reliability, but they need to do it in a more exciting way.

      • -1

No you don't because BBC doesn't have and hasn't had the rights for over a year. It's the same arrangement as foxtel and c10 (sky and BBC)

        • Pretty sure I watched the Australian F1, season preview, qualifying highlights, race highlights on BBC iPlayer. They stay there for around a month after they are aired.

You might be referring to live coverage?

For 2015, http://m.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/117295 The BBC will be showing the British GP live, and will broadcast four of the last six races as they happen. The races that the BBC does not show live will be broadcast as edited highlights later in the day.

          Take a look at http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/categories/sport/highlights

        • -1

@neil aus: no I'm referring to the fact that you said you watched all the races and quali, which didn't happen as bbc does not have the rights to most of the races

        • @thorton82: I watched the qualifying highlights and race highlights, they are still on the BBC iPlayer now, click the link, champ.

        • -1

@neil aus: Race highlights and quali highlights is not watching the race. Champ. No true F1 fan considers highlights a true experience.

    • What? I thought Foxtel was in addition to Ten broadcasting the races??? Is Ten no longer showing some?

      • Ten/One HD are only showing 10 races this year. Malaysia and the race after are both not going to be on free to air…
Instead channel 10 will have a 1hr highlights 24hrs after the race.

But for just $50 a month you can get foxtel which shows all the races, qualify and practice sessions and even more commercials than Ten/One ever showed!!

        • Oh man that's rididulous. And for $50/month you don't even get HD content! What a rip off :-(

        • @Flying Ace:

Err make that Channel 10 will now be showing only 9 races

          http://www.news.com.au/sport/motorsport/german-grand-prix-ca…

        • @Cardz: live races? For being out of the Europe timezone, I'm happy to wait until highlights are on BBC iPlayer, I think the same day for them.

It's good foxtel support the sport by buying rights, but their sports package is too expensive. Why would an F1 fan want to pay for EPL rights, or vice versa?

        • @neil aus:

Exactly my point. Especially considering many of the channels in the packages are rubbish that you wouldn't watch anyway.

  • Awesome thanks have purchased some tickets

  • Anyone know when the grandstand tickets come on sale?
