If anyone know if these media player price is good

Shouldn't this be a question in the forums, not a submission?

There are certainly cheaper options, e.g http://www.gearbest.com/tv-box/pp_126894.html

    • +1

The MK808B Plus has the exact same internals as this (Amlogic S805) but with Android Kitkat too.

      • And no remote and possible standby mode?

    • No,

I am also showing this product is on sale at aldi..

and the price seem reasonable and seems to support Kodi..

I was just making a comment…regardless of the deal

  • -2

Can anyone explain how people charge a fee for the IPTV boxes people are selling on Gumtree. Is it genuinely a subscribtion based service?

    http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/campbelltown/other-tv-dvd-pla…

Could you configure this box to replicate the above?

  • -1

Hmmm - the brand seems to be "Kodi", but this is also the new name for the software formerly known as XBMC. If you hover over the image, it also has AV output, which makes it a good unit for re-purposing older TVs. Not worth driving to Victoria for tho …

      • Comments on whirlpool weren't good - clunky, couldn't easily set up Google account for Play Store or reset to remove account details when returning to Aldi for refund…
        I'm out.

        • so… basically like every android media player?

      • +1

The one in that article looks to be completely different to this one.

    • +5

I think it's just advertising that it comes with Kodi pre-installed. AKA XBMC, which is one of the best media streamers around

  • +1

Poop. These appear to be rebadged Sumvision Cyclone X4's but with (grossly) outdated firmware.

  • -2

    I think Chromecast replaces this.

    • +1

      No, totally different product.

  • +1

So you dont know the quality
you don't know if the price is anygood
and you dont know How it compares to other similar product.

Yet you call this a deal/bargain?

    • -3

      That's right…

But many other people post bargains without giving alternatives..

      • -1

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:deal_posting_guidelin…
Summarise briefly why it is a bargain - why did you buy it or consider it worth sharing? How does the price compare to elsewhere? Can you comment from personal experience on the quality of the product?

You are ment to provide us a answer to these questions NOT ask us for the answers.

        • -5

I don't have to provide you with anything…

Nobody has to post any deals..if they don't want to

And if I don't want to provide you with any more details
          then tough titties..

          e.g.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/187389

All OP did was list the spec..

If you want more detail then do your own research….

Why don't you post your own deals before giving people who post deals attitude…

        • +1

It's people like you that makes people less incline to post any deals on this site…

        • -1

@tyler.durden: that post i made above wasn't my own words i copied it straight from the ozbargain guidelines you might want to take a read before you post another "deal" on here.

But continue to be rude it seems to of helped this "deal".
That Personal message you sent me abusing me doesn't help the "deal" at all either.

        • @holden93:

Then you should go post those guidelines to all deals that merely list the spec and the price…
which is exactly what this thread listed

          Even your own deal

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/178819

Merely listed the price and spec…
which you copied/pasted from Target website..

So don't go around preaching others..when you don't even follow it..

  • +1

WHY is this a bargain ?

    • Coz… Coz… it's ALDI.

And Aldi has free WiFI. Perhaps. (but not in Adelaide)

      • I can assure you Aldi doesn't charge a thing for wi-fi in Adelaide.:-p

  • Good timing for the Netflix launch maybe? I'll have to keep an eye out for something to get my parents…

  • Good timing for the Netflix launch maybe? I'll have to keep an eye out for something to get my parents…

  • Available from Wednesday.

Probably should weigh in here. The specs are pretty bad for the price and the software is quite out of date. The only real benefit would the the Australian power supply.

I'd go for something running on at least the Amlogic S812 chipset these days as it handles H.265, which we'll be seeing more and more of in the coming years. They usually go for roughly the same price.

    • Even the S805 will do h265 @ 1080p, though if you think you'll want h265 @ 4K anytime soon then yeah probably better to spend a little more on the S812.

BTW, where are people seeing what chipset is actually in this thing? Am I just missing it? Hard to make a proper judgement when you don't know what’s inside.

      • I think people are basing it on the product it seems to clone.

  • Anyone know if you can install OpenElec over the Android OS?

    • If you have to ask here, then no. But it has been ported to similar devices.
Easier to get the new Raspberry Pi instead, as its already ported and you'll get decent support.

      • I've got the raspberry pi 2 and it's great, but not having a remote and a dedicated on/off makes it not as friendly as I would like for the parents.

I would rather a device that has a dedicated remote that you could turn on and off.

I've got an intel nuc that fits the bill, but I would rather a cheaper device as devices for the parents and in laws

        • but not having a remote and a dedicated on/off

Why do you need the remote bundled? Better to have options. Use your phone, bluetooth gadget, … There are $5 media remote controls with USB receiver on ebay.
Or get an air-mouse. I like the Microsoft All-in-One Media Keyboard as the mother of all remote controls.

As for power, my Android htpc only uses 2W, so standby mode is not a big deal.

        • Is the TV really old? Kodi/XBMC supports CEC so you can use your TV remote and the signal will get passed through HDMI. Even better for the parents as they won't need to switch remotes. I think CEC was enabled by default, one day I just started pressing the arrow keys on the TV remote and it worked.

        • @deeevan: This. Set up my parents-in-law with a Pi, now Pi 2, and I would have never considered anything but CEC. They want it simple, and it doesn't get any simpler than CEC.

  • +1

I would buy an M8 or a Minix
this is better as if it does not work properly
    just return it

  • Does anyone know if it supports 1080p playback? My android CS918 only plays 720p at best. 1080P is stuttering badly :(

    • The chip inside should but I'd look at some of the new Beelink devices that go for about $100. Even the MK808B Plus handles 1080p (although wifi is average on it)

      • +1

Also look for devices that support HEVC..

  • Not a bargain at all there are tonnes of better Chinese ones on sites such as Geekbuying,Gearbest and aliexpress with the same specs cheaper or better spec's.

    • -1

      Please post those deals…

At least with this I can return it within 60 days…

Just after a quick 5 seconds search probably cheaper better options but i don't need to find the best to prove my point i just need cheaper then yours.

also the first post on this "deal lol" had one but not the same form as that is a stick not a mini pc box like this.

Also the 60 day return policy doesn't make this a good deal even those that isnt a good thing to try it if you like.

        • Of course, I didn't say the 60 days make it a good deal…
but if I don't like it I can return it easily

          Unlike your deal..

And if u think your deal is great then post it as a deal
          instead of being a PITA

        • +1

That's just the going price for a box like that from China, so no need to post it as a deal.

Anyway, you did state in your post for anyone to let you know how it's value compared to others, which is all that's going on here really.

Don't take it personally. Look at any post anyone has made where they seem unsure on it's bargain value and they are all met with the same responses.

        • @bamzero:

I don't mind people posting alternatives, if it is a better deal or if it is better spec…

But @holden93 is being a PITA…with regards to his comments..

Go read the earlier comments made by him

        • -1

          @tyler.durden:
I posted the guidelines of ozbargain if you do not like them take it up with the sites mods and stop sending me abusive messages calling me every name and curse word you could possibly think of.

I hope this isnt how you carry on every time someone points out why this isnt a deal to you.

        • -1

          @holden93:

Then you should go post those guidelines to all deals that merely list the spec and the price…
which is exactly what this thread listed..

If I know more about the product then I would've put more info..
else go do your own research..

If you don't like deal then neg it or
better yet, post some better deals…

Otherwise you are just being a PITA…

        • @tyler.durden: Quit being a child your responses are getting worse.

        • @holden93:

since you got no better response..

          resorting to name calling…

          this proves my point,

"you should go post those guidelines to all deals that merely list the spec and the price…
which is exactly what this thread listed.."

Otherwise you are just being a PITA

          Even your own deal

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/178819

  • I would personally avoid Android media players in general. I've dabbled with a couple in the past. They are okay but WiFi speed/connectivity quality and lower processing power than alternatives on the market doesn't make this adequate enough for HD media, more suitable for SD media consumers.

    • +1

So what media would you prefer?

I like android players cos they are fairly open to modding and installing apps, kodi easily..

whereas other players like Apple are only good if they are jailbroken

  • +1

I'd do the same thing as in this recent post. Repurposed an old laptop.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/186905

Failing that if no old laptop is available then my 2 fall backs would be using built-in DLNA player on newer TVs or better yet screencast/miracast to built-in receiver or buy a dongle.

Some Android dongles supposedly do a good job of mirroring but I've yet to test that out or find a good app to do the job. I hope that helps. Some Googling will likely turn up some results of known Android players that do a good job of streaming/mirroring.

    • I was able to get an old Aspire 5920 up as a unit for transcribing VHS/Vinyl, and the sound and screen are adequate as it was put out as a multimedia device, but the disadvantages compared to these units are:

No HDMI - VGA or S-video only - New units are HDMI giving digital sound, and for older monitors, you can get a HDMI-VGA converter for $22 [after GST] here:

      http://au.element14.com/element14/piview/adapter-hdmi-to-vga…

Maximum of 4 Gig memory - they usually came with ~ 512Meg or 1 Gig. These cheap sticks sell for less than 8 gig would cost as [SO]DIMMs.
Noise - fan and spinning rust storage
Size - visibility and convenience of access if put in cabinets.
Power use - along with heat.

The big advantage is no fluffing around with on-screen keyboards or ones that fit in a tea-cup, and a "remote" screen you can use for search/playlist creation/ect while the media is playing.
