How legitimate will this petition be if people just sign up for a free keyring.

    • +9

I support a Hulk Hogan and his mates, and not afraid to show it!

      • +20

For those who really want to help the WWF petition using fake names just weakens the petition as these are excuses that the opponents to the petition use to cast doubt on the credibility of the petition. So if you want to help use your real names and discourage those who use fake names.

I am negging the deal to point out using fake names as the OP suggests is not helping the cause.

        • +8

Implying that petitions actually achieve anything besides con financial contributors that advocacy groups are actually "doing something"….

        • +4

but this is OzBargain, not some political soap box.
People come here for cheap stuff, free preferably!

        • +2

          @Sir Casm:

Next time your in Target, can you pick me up a copy of GTAV?

        • @Mik:

          U wot m8?

        • +2

@froodh: Totally agree and in that case its legitimate, but the OP suggests using a fake name which isnt really in the spirit of the freebie being offered. Thats what the negative is really for.

        • @Sir Casm:

          Sorry, I guess you're not a gamer.

          You suggested petitions are fruitless.
GTA V was taken off the shelf in Target stores recently, in direct response to a petition.

        • @Mik:

No, I play vidya (in between work & normal life) but I'm not some neckbeard weaboo whose life revolves around it. What a strange & obscure reference to make…

        • @RockyRaccoon:

          Inappropriate uses of negative vote

Any negative vote that falls into any of these reasons will be revoked by a moderator.

          An issue with the poster:

          Disliking their comments or description.

        • +1

          @tomkun01: > Disliking their comments ….

The heading on negative votes also says

          Purpose:

To let others know about issues with the deal, merchant or product.

Well if you take the comments point literally as you are, then anything they say cant be voted down. As the post itself is a comment.

I am voting down the strategy that is being promoted.

BTW I dislike many negative votes in posts, but in this case I clearly pointed out the reason for my vote, that is its an abuse of the intent of the offer by WWF. Which also BTW I really don't care for the WWF normally.

The negative vote is so people read why I think there isa problem here. Those who really want the keyring can still go ahead, those who think it will also assist the WWF if they use a fake name should be alerted to the issue. If the OP removed this suggestion I would remove my negative vote.

        • @RockyRaccoon: Are you saying that the rules were meant to be read figuratively?

        • +1

@tomkun01: Only if you are a mod :)

  • +2

Was hoping for a turtle keychain, but what the heck!
For a good cause as well!

    • +1

so… they're not going to kill a turtle to make a keyring? :/

    • Sanstoem, you must have b…dy keys!

  • they offer the keyring after you sign up. doesnt mention keyring on first page.

so it's really just ozbargainers just signing up for free keyring

  • +1

Signed up and support the cause. Thanks for highlighting this petition.

  • +12

Not sure i like this part

    • mobile number and post code on the first screen is not mandatory

    • +3

      That's why I gave them a fake mailing address…

      • +1

or your real name could be Scrooge McDuck and you're just bluffing!

  • +36

    oh man I love wrestling!

    • +5

      I hope I get a Hulk Hogan one…

      • +1

If it's WWF-Australia then they probably only have Outback Jack keyrings.

    • -3

    • +1

      AWESOME!

    • +4

      Also came for the wrestling.

    • +6
      • +5

Yes! I came to the comments looking for this.

      • +2

Where can I buy that on a nicely fitted T-shirt?

    • wrestling crocs lol

  • +18

Can you smell what the Reef is cooking?

    • Dead coral.

    • Does it smell like reifer?

  • +6

so this is where my donations have been going

  • +37

Seriously - encouraging people to put fake details into a petition so you can score a free keyring from a charity? Umm, no.

    • +20

Maybe they'll dump any unclaimed keyrings into the barrier reef?

      • Was that really necessary?

    • +3

Yup, these are the sort of posts it's disappointing to see.

And y'know, who among us really needs another keyring?

      • And y'know, who among us really needs another keyring?

I'm somewhat amused by the giving away of largely useless bits of junk that everyone already has too many of, when "the petition seems as though its trying to keep Australia beautiful"

        Does not compute.

        • +1

The organisation is rather dubious these days IMO and seems to mount large campaigns about things that aren't endangered. Almost all their marketing appears to be about things that are either big or cute.

For example they have a long running campaign with regards to African Elephants which hilariously their own website lists as numbers in the region of 500,000 … so not endangered. Or even close.

Amongst other things they use the money they recieve from (relatively) wealthy Westerners to remove African peasants from area deemed to be a wildlife sanctuary so that other wealthy people can visit the park to see the not very endangered African Elephants. With a fair amount of violence in some cases.

If the fact that they're churning out useless plastic garbage (wait except for "awareness" and more donashuns it's useless) didn't clue you in to their credentials lel…

    • +2

      Agree. Classic scumbag move.

  • +6

Thanks OP for bringing this to my attention, sent a petition, no key ring required.

  • Hopefully they don't sell your details, just make up an adress and fake numbers if your concerned.

    • +5

And then complain when you don't receive the free keyring to that fake address?

      • +1

        Step 4, profit!

  • +3

The sooner the protection happens the less that is paid in the long run to fix it, therefore deal ;)

  • +1

    Text from WWF promotion email:
"Did you know that right now the Great Barrier Reef is at risk of being turned into a dumping ground and shipping superhighway?

There are plans to dredge and dump millions of tonnes of seabed in this natural wonder of the world, which will spoil the precious home of endangered marine turtles and rare dugongs.

WWF needs your help to save our beautiful World Heritage icon. Please sign the petition now to help stop the industrial destruction of the Great Barrier Reef.

We must act now — tomorrow could be too late. Add your name and we'll send you a FREE* WWF panda keyring to thank you for your wonderful support.

    • Conditions apply*
  • I don't understand how this offer can be negged if it's offering a free product?

    • +7

Because of the hypocrisy of the offer…

  • +3

Thanks OP, put my name to the petition for a good cause.

I don't see why anyone would want a free WWF keyring and not want to use their real name in the petition. If you forgo the keyring you don't need to add your mobile number and you can untick the box so you don't receive spam.

    • +4

Note that as a not-for-profit, WWF isn't bound by the SPAM Act 2003. Once they've got your email address, they're free to spam you to eternity, with no repercussions. Buyer (?) beware.

*Hhhmmm, is a keyring worth a lifetime of charity nag-mail?*

    Thanks OP, ordered 2!

  • +1

Had no idea those fake wrestlers were so environmentally conscious.

  • Either the charity rule needs to be altered (which it really should to allow for posts like TA's and the other one recently) or this deserves to be in the forums, like previous charity 'deals'

Charity deals where the user receives nothing in return are not a bargain

This is why those previous deals were moved to the forum (user received nothing), but that isn't the case here. The deal is for the free keyring.

      • In before "nothing in return" is disputed by the possibility of an indirect return.

        • +4

Does a warm & fuzzy feeling meet the theshold?

  • Daffy signed the petition on 24/03/2015 12:16:49 PM

    Hey there McDuck :-)

    • +1

      Right species, wrong promotion:

That's my weird second cousin once removed from the wrong side of the tracks.

  • +3

A healthy planet means more bargains to be had in the future :) A true OzBargainer supports all causes to save our planet from destruction. A free keyring seals the deal.

    • +1

Save the planet by creating rubbish?

      • By creating awareness :)

        • +2

A mountain of landfill sure does make people more aware

  • +3
    • But the fun is in signing up someone unexpected to their SMS'

      • +1

Does anyone know Greg Hunt's mobile number?

      • +2

Imagine the joy of owning 0444 444 444.

        • Chinese will pay good money for a number with many 8s in it. Conversely, they will avoid any number with 4s. So probably not a Chinese person. I would imagine, though, that some mobile numbers are reserved by the telecom companies, for whatever purpose

        • @tomkun01:

The entire block of 0488 8** *** was allocated to My Number Pty Ltd.

        • @tomkun01: True that. In Chinese that number would translate to something like: "Zero-die-die-die-die-die-die-die-die-die"

  • Disgusting way to get your information and another "name" on a petition…I'm totally against this type of marketing.

  • -1

Gonna put my name down on the petition as Triple H

  • -1

Handing out free keyrings as an "incentive" or "bribe" to get signatures is unethical and defeats the whole purpose of the petition. A petition should be signed if the person agrees with the cause, not because they can benefit from a free giveaway!

    • +6

To be fair, there's no mention of a freebie/incentive prior to signing it, as far as I can see on that page.

You're only offered the keyring after you've signed. No?

      • Exactly! I thought the OP was pulling my leg! I saw no mention of anything free until I actually signed it and then it took me to another page asking for where to send my free keyring!

    • Did you actually go to the page? There is no mention of a free keyring for signing. You sign and then you get the option if you want a free keyring to get it posted to you. Do your research first before having a dig!

  • How unethical!

Google 'niggard'. It is etymologically dissimilar to the racist term used to describe people with dark skin.

  • +3

    Bribes/buying votes.

    Bad Form!

    • Buying votes? How unaustra… uh, nevermind.

  • We get so many price errors and such that result in free products like the memorycards and dealsdirect recently for example, yet this is the unethical deal giving a keychain for your support in preventing something as unethical as dumping in a world heritage site?

  • I'm all pro reef but shouldn't this mob be spending less dosh on keyrings and legal battles over the commercial use of an the company acronym?

    • +1

The keyring is an inexpensive way to promote the campaign. A key component of any campaign is to raise awareness. Keychain might spark a conversation (e.g. "Why do you have that keyring?", "Look at my cool keyring"). The more awareness raised, the more public outrage over destruction of reef, more likelihood that destructive plans are halted.

Probably a good bang-for-buck advertising investment. Got us talking about it ;)

I think it's a great campaign. Get behind it. I want the Great Barrier Reef to be preserved for myself and future generations. It's an Aussie icon, so I'm sure many of us do.

      • +1

        A key component

I see what you did there

      • I agree, ive been there and easily the most amazing thing ive seen in my life.

        Shouldn't this be called a quay-chain though? ;)

  • +3

I signed. Used my real details. Not cool if you don't. What's the point?

  • +2

The whole premise of this is kinda wack. Sign a petition to save the earth and we'll send you another bit of junk to fill the landfill. You are doing more to help the planet by not requesting the keyring, no postage, no plastic whats-it, no carbon footprint, no rubbish.

How about "Complete waste of the earths resources" or simply "Based on principle". If the mods want to delete my neg they can go ahead, I don't really care. It's discussion like this that might make people think whether they really do need another keyring to just chuck in the drawer. It's the big picture.

        • Wait, so the rules of this site don't matter? It's OZEthics now? Ethical discussions belong in the forums. Feel free to create a thread. Ozbargain is not whirlpool. Keep site costs down. It's the big picture.

  • I signed using real details - this is an important thing to do. Then I skipped the free keyring because I'd rather WWF keep their funds for something more important than a hand out.
