iPhone 6 Plus 64GB $1,128 Outright at Optus Store

300

My wife smashed her iPhone 5 (digitiser) screen so she needed a new phone asap.

Bad luck as Apple had a price rise recently.

I searched online for Australian stock and the cheapest was $1199. Grey imports don't seem any cheaper and you may also get stung with GST + Duty as it's over $1,000.

Went to Knox City Shopping Centre last night after work, Harvey Norman $1,170, JB Hifi $1,160. Just for kicks I asked the Optus store if they even sold it outright and they did at $1,128 in the colour my wife wanted. I didn't bother asking the Telstra store next door as I was hungry and wanted to go home.

So there you have it, not a bargain, but a bargain for an iPhone.

Those who say you're getting ripped off buying an iPhone can go away, tell me something I don't know lol.

Unfortunately I won't be claiming the GST refund, as I don't know anyone traveling overseas soon nor would my wife want to be without her new phone.

Between 5 iPhones, and now a Nexus 5 user.

Never had one crash. Backing up after PC crashes- no problems.

One had a power button issue, swapped straight away.

I thought one had a reception/drop out issue. The Apple store thought it was a carrier issue, but swapped it on the spot. They were right it was a Optus black spot issue, ended up getting out of the Optus contract earlier.

I had great customer service with my Nexus 5 too. Faulty volume button and SIM issue. In both cases Google sent out new phones.

My only Samsung experience is a Tab S, Dead on Arrival (power button issue). The good guys had no replacement stock, the Samsung Experience Store wouldn't swap it over as they aren't owned by Samsung, and they wanted me to send away a brand new faulty tablet to get repaired.

I quite like the Apple experience.

          iPhone 3G, 4, 4S, another 4S and 5S owner.
Never had one that I DIDN'T have problems with thanks to itunes.
Jailbreaking is the only thing that salvaged the experience and let me recover things on the 4S and 5S.

Galaxy S3 and now S5 - best phones I have ever owned.

          Apple can eat my arse.

          @Chroma:
I went through so many 3GS due to faulty home buttons, Apple ended up replacing it with a new 4….which also got replaced many times due to home button issues.

        • @PainToad: iPhones here, and replacements and upgrades for little cost from apple stores have been a major benefit. No waiting for warranty returns from other states.

Did you take your iphone 5 to apple to see how much it would cost to replace it?

LG & Sony also use IPS like Apple.

QHD is wasted on a phone anyway and sucks battery life.

can u please show us some figures to support your claims

        • Which claim?

        • IPS > AMOLED

LG & Sony also use IPS like Apple.

QHD is wasted on a phone anyway and sucks battery life.

        • @edwinlin88:

AMOLED may be more accurate, but IMO IPS screens have better colour accuracy and wider viewing angles.

I have both 1080P AMOLED and IPS screen devices.

Then again, I'm one of the few people who prefers a good Plasma screen to a good LED screen TV.

          First link on Google https://www.phonegurureviews.com/ips-vs-amoled/

In a general summary we can say that…….

IPS is known for its better color production, cheap cost of production, better daylight visibility, sharper image quality and higher resolution support

AMOLED screens stand for better battery life, slimmer and sleek design, greater contrast, darker blacks, and better response time.

        • @JB1: hey im sorry ive just been trolling all along. thank you for your information which may be useful to some on this thread.

Once the PPI is high enough that the Pentile Matrix isn't apparent, I'd take AMOLED over IPS any day. Not to mention the AMOLEDs in the Note 4 and Galaxy S6 are rated as being one of the most(if not the most) accurate displays on the market. Shame I'm a Windows fanboy and Samsung keep the latest tech to themselves…

        • AMOLED may be more accurate, but IMO IPS screens have better colour accuracy and wider viewing angles.

I have both 1080P AMOLED and IPS screen devices.

          @JB1:

          By accurate, Imeant colour accuracy.

Also replying to your above comment to another poster.. IPS may be traditionally known for colour accuracy, but the Note 4 and Galaxy S6 have the most acccurate displays currently available.

          http://www.displaymate.com/Color_Accuracy_ShootOut_1.htm#Tab…

Lowest DeltaE across the board bar Blues..

iPhone 6's IPS is very very good, but the new AMOLEDs are just better.

I do agree that at the same resoulution and size, and IPS is inherently sharper due to subpixel arrangement though, which is where the 1440p comes in and makes up for it.

        • I have a Lumia 735 and I thought it was AMOLED? certainty just as nice or better than my previous phone, galaxy s3

        • @sickllama:
735 is indeed AMOLED. One of the easiest ways to tell is to bring up a black background. If it blends in with the black borders around the screen very much seamlessly and no shimmer then it should be AMOLED.

        • @TheContact:

          Good to know.

I suppose I have always based on opinion on current IPS and AMOLED.

That's one of the reasons I don't like the Galaxy 5.

I look forward to the new Galaxy 6 and if the screen is as good as they say, I'll replace my Nexus 5 with the Samsung Galaxy 6.

In some ways the Galaxy 6 has gone backwards, no removable battery, SD card and no more water resistant. But hopefully it will feel better quality, the old Galaxies felt like plastic toys.

The iPhone hate is always strong…

I've got a Note 4, but I really understand why people have iPhones. I mean, look at my Australian N910G Variant of the Note 4. Still no lollipop update.

Everyone on a apple iphone gets the latest and greatest at about the same time. Plus, on my note 4, theres awful touchwiz software and the horrendous bloat. Plus, somehow, on this things hulking great amount of RAM and processing power it still can't even slide through a web page smoothly?

I think that Google should mandate to phone manufacturers that they can't skin android anymore. If people want to use a certain vendor skin, they can download it and install it. Touchwiz on my note 4 is a joke. If you try to do anything that gets it away from Samsung, it complains. Change the messaging app from "Messaging" to textra? It warns you that you might create a genocide. Plus, apps like Evernote and Dropbox CANNOT be disabled or uninstalled, and update every time they get the chance.

A lot of people hate on iPhones, but I've never quite understood why. I get the walled garden, and how you can sideload APK's and stuff like that, but Android has a lot of shortfalls, way more than it should have as this mature of an OS.

    • +5

As both an Apple and Android user, I like both for different reasons.

But for my wife who uses her phone for FB/Apps/Camera, it's a great phone.

That's why I use Nexus, as pure a Android phone as you can get, but you're right, it's not as smooth a OS.

I use the Android as it's better to watch movies on, can torrent directly on the phone, but if you're not using it for that, the iPhone is better.

      • -3

Apple looks better for movies. No one needs torrents on a mobile device (Alot of wasted bandwidth in upload traffic)

        • +2

Utorrent app only downloads on WiFi :)

    • +3

I wish people would separate Samsung and Android in their minds.

Samsung is god awful and only brought by ignorant people who don't know better. But that doesn't mean ALL Android devices are terrible. Until you've owned a Nexus device, you shouldn't judge.

      • If you read my comment- I use a Nexus 5 myself so can judge.

You're right, the Nexus Android is much better than Samsung, but no where near as polished as iOS.

For some reason, my Nexus 5 seems a lot faster on Kit Kat than Lollipop.

        • My comment was directed at FrasierCrane

      • I do seperate Android and Samsung in my mind, but, also in my mind, the fact that Samsung is so awful at their software should stir Google to mandate to manufacturers what they can/cannot put on their devices. They should not be allowed to preinstall the touchwiz garbage their devices, but rather, the users should be able to if they wish to.

No manufacturer software has ever made an Android device better or more full of features. Period.

        • Android is opensource, Google can't force an OEM to do anything. At best they refuse certification, ie. not allow bundling of Play store and Google Services.

Don't pin the blame on Google, it belong on ignorant consumers that continue to support Samsung simply because it's the new 'hip' brand.

      • +1

I'm an iPhone user (personal phone) and an Android user (Samsung S4 work phone).

I've used an iPhone since the iPhone 3G. I've used an Android phone for 6 months. I prefer the iPhone, the Android frustrates me because it doesn't behave like the iPhone. I know my smart phone opinion is based on experience.

No one mobile operating system is better than the other. It's based on personal preference and experience, so let's just leave it at that.

    • Because google doesn't manage the OS on each phone the manufacture does, so you have to hope they will release it in a short period, I had to wait ages for my nexus 7 tablet to get the latest update, but iPhone straight away on every device, they will drop off after about 3-4 years which is still longer then any android device out there

  • +1

I have a Nexus 5 myself, even that that is cumbersome to use compared to iOS, let alone a Samsung with all the crap bloatware.

We also have a Samsung Tab S, so she knows how to use Android.

I must admit, the iPhone 6 is very snappy, no lag compared to my Nexus 5 (lollipop) and Samsung Tab S (kit kat).

The screen is fantastic, IPS Sceens craps all over AMOLED.

You know what they say, happy wife, happy life.

  • +9

So there you have it, not a bargain, but a bargain for an iPhone.

Over $1000 for a phone is not even remotely a bargain

    • -1

      My thoughts exactly

      • +1

Iphone users are probably subsidising sensible phone prices. So keep buying and replacing when you drop it/kill the battery.

It's compulsory in China I've heard.

        • Absolutely, especially from a R&D perspective. If out weren't for Apple in the smartphone and the tablet markets we wouldn't have the devices we get from other manufacturers.

Good way of looking at it - please keep spending $1000 for a phone! Two years later, I'll get the same technology for $200.

        • @sickllama:

          Thanks.

    • +3

It depends on how you look at it. A bargain is defined as "an advantageous purchase, especially one acquired at less than the usual cost". So technically this is a bargain.

Just because something seems expensive to you does not mean it's not a bargain.

If your wife managed to smash iPhone 5 screen then she should seriously look into getting a good case to protect her new iPhone 6+

    • Yeah ordering one asap.

She dropped on concrete face down. It has a bumper case on there, however the crack looked like it originated in the middle of the screen, so it may have hit a pebble or rock.

My son has dropped it heaps of time with no damage, but never on concrete.

      • +4

    • +1

      LOL a windows phone

      • Lol a $1000 phone.

Windows phones are fine. How many apps do you need?

        • There is an App for everything on Apple store, and not many of these apps available on windows phone.

        • @asa79:

Apps for everything? Cleaning carpets? Flying?

Sorry, but I can only think of one or two times when I saw an app that might be good that wasn't available on my phone. And then I could usually just use the web page.

Apps aren't really apps, they are just front ends for webpages.

          Go ahead and waste $1k!

        • @tightwad: Because you have a windows phone is why you cant find useful apps

        • @asa79: We now even have Candy Crush Saga though :)

OK, jokes aside, even though the number of apps on Windows Phone is abysmal at best, the phone themselves are alright.

To be honest, the basic stuff that you'd expect from a smartphone is at least doable on Windows Phone IMO. OS itself is actually alright, considering the spec of the Windows Phones. Also, even though app selection is limited, there are amazing apps out there as well. HERE map is decent, Office Lens is amazing for taking photos of whiteboard writings and documents. There are obviously few areas that are lacking, number of apps, OS itself is slightly lacklustre but as long as you are fine with a basic smartphone, I think Windows Phone is alright.

To be honest, when I was using an iPhone 4s when my WP broke down, even though there were more apps available, I found that I was pretty much using the same kind of apps that I was using from Windows Phone (barring Candy Crush Saga, we didn't have that at that time).

Only issue is the iPhone Plus is so stupidly big, its like buying an iPad mini and using that as a Phone, I miss Steve Jobs and we will never make a bigger phone approach, I want a phone that fits in my pocket easily

  • I love to be in control, be flexible, and be able for get free (paid) apks from Amazon, Google Store (& some other sources).

Android devices give me what I want.

I do love iphones just for their look and their screen only. I hate using them, especially with their only control button.

And, sorry. I also love Apple to stay in the game. That would help us the users, as the brands will compete tiressly to win us over!

  • +3

I like how every Apple deal turns into a bait and hate session over the company, their ecosystem and their pricing.

Just be happy with the phone you have as you can't compare apples and oranges.

With Apples recent prices increases due to the currency drop, this a good price for this device regardless whether you love or loathe Apple.

    • +2

Errr… pretty sure everyone is comparing apples to androids … not oranges

    • Better than using their rights (within OzB neg guidelines/rules) to neg the deal.

  • yeah I dropped my S3 face down. Bumper was fine, glass was wrecked, Nexus 5 is a great unit with a poor battery LG, G2 is a great unit with good battery life, I can't justify an iPhone but missus has a 4 year old iPhone 4 going strong …. build quality is great but the weight and screen size are a bit poor.

I like the look of the iPhone 6 but it's still the same ol IOS under the hood

    • I have a Nexus 5, battery life and camera are terrible.

  • +1

$1,128 for a phone?! AND you consider that a deal??

    What is wong with you?!

    • +1

The service that apple provide rips any other company out there. It's worth it if you don't want to deal with problems. When I had a iPhone I enjoyed it being replaced for small problems. No questions asked, that was the best part. The iPhone operates well, software made specifically for the hardware, tested extensively unlike android, 1 software for 47282938370 phones

      • Fanboi response, when I made no point about brand.

That price for any phone is bonkers.

And a toy/gadget/gimmick/phone that's as superior as you claim doesn't need such support.

"A fool and his money are easily parted"

  • Get a glass tempered screen protector for your wife's new iphone, so it breaks the glass protector first. And no air bubbles unlike the plastic one.

    • +2

That only works when the hit is front on, usually its from the side, when the shell of the phone is hit, the impact transfers to the glass and it breaks..

    • +1

I can install the plastic screen protectors on a 5inch phone without bubbles, but had some bubbles on my tablet.

      For $4, I bought a glass one.

  • +3

Brand new iPhone $1,200. Brand new small car $13,000. Apple is slowly getting there..

  • They may as well charge $13,000 as iPhone users have no grasp on value.

In fact they would probably sell more due to the 'exclusivity' image. Look I've got a $13,000 phone. How cool am I?
