1kg Tub of Honey $2.00 (Coles, Morley Galleria WA) - Possibly Other Stores

450

Was just at Coles @ Morley Galleria and they were selling 1kg of Fewsters Farm unprocessed honey for $2 (was $12, save $10).

Expiry date is Nov 2016, but with something like honey, who cares about expiry dates? It goes on my list of other things that don't expire such as rice and vegemite.

Unsure if this is statewide or just limited to this one particular Coles store, but needless to say I bought 10 of them with plans to give some away to family and keep a decent reserve for myself.

EDIT: It has been confirmed that this is a deleted item but some stores may still have some left if you are remotely lucky. Probably not though.

  • That won't last long.
How many were on the shelf?

    • Plenty in the main isle, I first noticed it on the end of an isle/corner near the bakery department, and I pretty much cleared that shelf of what was left, but once I got to the main isle where all the honey/jam/vegemite was there seemed to be heaps, and not too many people noticing how cheap it was.

any honey at this price is worth a try if it's still in date, let alone a 1kg for $2.00

      Honey never goes bad

      • +3

never ever ever ever ever! was shocked when I learned this!

        • +3

          Me too.

I had some expired honey, so I asked online. Someone pointed me to an article about archaeologists eating honey found in 4000 year old tombs in Egypt…

          @mgowen:

          And this by a redditor:

About 10 years ago I was on an archeological dig in northern Israel where we uncovered two sealed earthenware jars full of pre-Hellenistic honey (about 2200 years old). My dig leader told us the same thing, and then offered us the opportunity to taste it.

Only a few people dared, me being one. It tasted like honey. We then sent the jars off to be examined. Back in the states, we were in a lab with most of the people who were on the dig, and the results of the tests came back in. My professor/dig leader read the opening few lines and then slowed. He said, somberly, "Now some of you took me up on my offer to try the honey. If you are one of those people, I offer you now the chance to leave the room."

          No one moved.

"Ok…you asked for it. In the bottom of the jar of honey there remained the blanched bones of an infant child," he said. "What maybe I should have told you is that often pre-Hellenistic cultures would offer their stillborn children to the sun god in earthenware jars of honey. It seems over the last two thousand years all but the bones have disintegrated and been absorbed by the honey."

TLDR: I've eaten 2000 year old dead baby.

  • Never seen that brand in QLD

    • +4

Taking a stab in the dark here, but i'd guess it's a WA brand?

      • +1

        What gives it away?

        • +2

Only the big lid saying buy WA first

  • Looks like a WA brand, from the lid sticker.

  • +3

At $2 a kilo I can afford to buy enough to cover myself in

    • +2

      and then what?

Sorry about the delayed response. I plan on climbing on to the roof, jumping off and seeing how many insects I can catch. Obviously.

        • and seeing how many insects I can catch

          Enough to fly?

    • +3

Trust me, you do NOT want to do this :P After a day of extracting honey I am covered in it and cannot wait to get it all off, so gross

  • +1

    good find, thanks for sharing.

  • anyone know if its in Victoria??

    • It looks like is a local brand, plus it says this on their website:

In Perth, Fewster's Farm Honey is mostly being sold in Western Australia where it can be found on the shelves of Woolworth's & Coles supermarkets and select IGA stores.

So I highly doubt it :( oh well!

  • +5

Sweet deal. I'll making a … direct route.

    • +1

I combed through all the bad puns and yours workered the best on me

  • Hell, too slow, Ozbargainized…

    • +1

Did you buzz down to Morley to pick up this sweet deal but find it had already flown off the shelves? There seemed to be a lot when I was there 2 hours ago, but a lot can happen in 2 hours.

      • +3

Haven't got that chance. Rang them 30 mins ago, been told none left. Unless someone's playing games.

        • +1

Thanks for the update. I'll leave this deal up for a bit longer and see if anyone else can confirm, then mark it as expired.

        • +2

          @bonezAU:

Tried to ring other 8 stores north of river. All replied with "deleted line, no stock".

        • +2

          @hotwinter:

Thanks m8. I'll mark it as expired then, they were obviously trying to get rid of it quick and I struck 10 pots of golden goodness at the Morley store this arvo.

        • +2

          @bonezAU:
Not as lucky as you. I may have to pay a visit to their farm next week. A dozen of 1kg tub cost $84. Still at least 40% cheaper than what I get normally. Thanks to brought up this brand!

        • +2

          @hotwinter:

Wow, that works out at $7 per tub, and buying direct from the farm they are probably making more money than selling it through the supermarkets, so you're supporting them in a good way. It wouldn't surprise me if ColesWorths screw the farmers down to like $3 per 1kg tub then put it on the shelves for $12+

I've tasted some of it already and it's fantastic quality honey. I wonder why Coles has it as a deleted item… who knows. They have probably got a bee farm over east that they've screwed down to $1.50 per kg so they don't need to buy the local stuff any more, hahaha. Dirty bastards they are.

  • Damn, just got home from the shops. Hope it's still there tomorrow…

  • -5

    Could be fake china honey

  • +3

Anyone who keeps an eye on the Coles/Woolworths specials would know that any honey is very rarely on sale.

I've never been sure why this is, since almost all other spreads are on very regular sale…

  • Every time we used to buy honey we used to get ants so haven't purchased it for 3 years.

    • +1

ants = extra [crunchy] protein :p

    • +5

3 years & you haven't been able to think of a solution.
Keep the jar inside another container or the fridge, problem solved.

      • Always in fridge in my option. Ants will find it anywhere except fridge.

        • Ants aren't great at swimming, put some water in the outer container…

        • @spillmill:

Okay if I see a cheap honey deal I may get honey then.

Haven't really missed it that's all.

    • +3

Time to invest in a pet anteater.

    • put… the jar in a pot of water, or any other billion options. Is that really enough for you not to buy honey. Weird.

      • It's not such a bad thing considering honey shortages.

Treeman has inadvertently done a good thing :P

        • haha i suppose if you look at it like that

  • +1

I wonder why it is so incredibly cheap ?
    Not being negative.
    Just genuinely curious.
Maybe end of line, though they usually label it "clearance" then.

    • +2

hotwinter confirmed above he had called 8 stores and they all told him it was a deleted item, so that's obviously why they were trying to get rid of it so cheap/quickly.

      • +3

Im not sure whether to joyous on the fact that there's a bargain on honey, or to be saddened that an Aussie company is being kicked out of the supermarket's game.

      • Thanks Bonez, hadn't read that comment yet.

  • EXPIRED 1kg Tub of Honey $2.00

I thought honey didn't have an expiry ???

      • +3

        WOOOOOOSH!

  • well done man, great find

$2 a tub. What is the minimum wage of the bees?

  • What? Ants are only a small problem

    • +1

Ants are only a small problem

what is this then? a problem for ants?
