  • Nice one Trent. Hopefully they have stock available.

    • Yeah def getting one :)

      • There are on Kitkat, right?
I need one to use as a 4G wifi hotspot and at this price its great (has to be a phone) but I think Kitkat flags when its being tethered? A new "feature"… Not sure if that comes up as an issue for us in Australia but I know it has given people overseas a lot of grief.

        • +1

          yeah Android OS, v4.4.2 (KitKat)

        • +2

          @TRENT86:
Well I'm going to get one anyway as a spare 4G phone at this price and maybe look for something decent on Jellybean for the hotspot. Looks like jelly bean is the last Android release that doesn't flag tethering.

        • Vodafone doesn't stop you from tethering does it?

    • +1

These were a good buy at $89, but $49 is just crazy. The camera is just ok, but nothing under $100 at the moment would do better.

I agree. The performance of a phone with 1GB of RAM, like this one, makes a big difference.

      • Is 1GB enough?

  • +5

Huawei Y550 just 49$! That's insane price bud!!! I wonder if Huawei is making any money on this phone, at all!!

    • +3

Don't you mean, how much are Vodafone subsidising their prepaid phones? I'd be very surprised if Huawei hadn't already been paid for a massive worldwide job lot by Voda. For Voda it's like printers which are sold for 25 bucks, the value is in the customers buying the cartridges, likewise a phone is pointless without activated simcard and credit.

      • +2

That's why I love buying cheap-as-chips prepaid Telstra phones and not using their network. Taking a bit of their money makes me feel good inside

  • Any possible to root these phone?

  • Did anyone notice, it comes with 1gb ram?

    • +1

Yeah also quad core and Android 4.4 which is optimized for less RAM, should be a great speedy phone

But I agree the 512MB of RAM is what let these cheap phones down the most

  • +2

What's the chances of a $50 Starter SIM and 3 months Spotify Premium thrown in with the Y550?

  • +3

    Y550 is a head-banging good deal!

STUPIDLY tough phone which is almost impossible to break. The 1GB of ram and the decent quad core (A53) is very powerful and efficient so a long battery life as well. The display resolution is not the best but the only thing that lets this phone down is the lack of storage space. After a few apps it tends to clog up :( Other than that it's bloody perfect!

  • +5

Thanks OP. Great find. For those unaware, easily unlocked for $3.99 by Bagman who has only had great feedback on OzBargain. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/167230

    • +1

For Vodafone, wont they just allow you unlock any handset for free via this site - https://unlock.vodafone.com.au/voila/handsetunlock/self-serv…

I've done this with previous purchased, which is awhile ago now so things might have changed.

      • +2

I have had luck with that previously but no luck with these. Not to say don't give it a go it may work. Otherwise Bagman is the answer.

    • How to contact Bagman? Any phone number?

  • +7

"Lego City $20 Save $8" I got excited thinking it was Lego City for the Wii U :(

  • What are people thinking of the PS4 price?

Is the extra 4 games at Target (Lara Croft, Trials: Fusion, Minecraft & Rayman) worth the additional $100?

The reason that I ask is because I have GC's for Coles / Myer.

    What do other OZbargainer's reckon?

    • If you didn't want the games, you could alway sell them for $30 a pop or higher

      • I was considering doing that anyway but I appreciate the advice, thanks :)

Does anybody know if Coles/Myer groups, I.E: KMart or Target will match bundle prices? I could just ring but if people know outright that they won't it's easier to not bother ringing them only to be told no.

        • Kmart wont price match bundles because it isn't identical stocked item http://www.kmart.com.au/pricepromise
And also the possibility they probably wont have the same games in stock

        • Ah well. Thanks for the info :)

LOL Wii U Mario Kart for $369. Will never be the $169 i got mine for thanks to the skylanders stuff up.

For the Huawei Y550 phone.I think the best way to buy it is buy direct from Vodafone website paying with those credit card come with price protection like 28 Degree,Commonwealth plat card and etc.

After buy just claim for the price protection..

Easy way to buy from Vodafone and better warranty process I guess.

    • Worth noting to check the policy, for my cba Platnium debit the price difference has to be atleast $75

      • Yes you are right,I just find out. This method is not working if buy from Vodafone direct.

SO only way to get this phone now is buy now from Kmart, pay using 28 Degree card and claim for the different when the actual sale date start.

        • +3

… Or be patient and wait a few days.

        • @padman:

later run out of stock I afraid!

    • 28 Degree

Has to be the same retailer. Your cunning plan will only work at K-mart for 28 Degrees Mastercard afaik.

If the store had price guarantee like the Good Guys it would be different.

  • Interesting, does the Y550 have CM support? Would love to get one to play around with if it does.

    • not at this stage, depends on if popularity rises

lollipop will really shine on this with the 64bit cpu even if its OTA

    • +1

There is an unofficial CM11 rom going around (check out the xda thread).

Ive got it running now, do not recommend it, camera doesn't work and you need to get a 3rd party app to move things to SD card, also tricky to go back to stock rom (keeps erroring out for me)

Hopefully it will have an official rom one day

      • Cheers mate, will keep an eye out for official CM rom before starting to look for it.

  • Huawei Y550 Phone Bands.
I want to switch between all Australian Telcos using 3G.
The specs show 3G bands as model Y550 01, Y550 02, Y550 03. Can anyone id kmarts phone.

    • +1
    • Pretty sure Voda is 02 tri-band version.

    • It's the L02, triband 3G 850/900/2100

    • Currently out of stock online

      • Yeah they fixed the code too, wasn't supposed to work with electronics.

  • +3

I own the y550 as a back up phone. Bad points is it only supports 4gb which fills you very quickly, and you can't save apps into the sd card either. I got mine unlocked by bagman for $3.99 as opposed to Vodafone unlock site wanting to charge $75. The 4g band in phone works well on Vodafone and on telstra. You can tether the handset, but camera is ordinary. But I would say it's worth $49 and if it includes bonus $50 voda starter sim then it's even better value

    • So Why can't we move apps to SD card? This sort of kills it for me.

      • +2

Apparently once rooted and a SD card app installed it's a great phone

      • Can't use the app Apps2SD ?

        • Use Link2SD after rooting.

  • +2

Previous OzBargainers have mentioned problems with poor GPS performance on the Huawei Y550:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/183165#comment-2571928

The biggest let down is the low screen resolution on such a large screen (480 x 854 pixels):

    • +1

Well, for 49$, I would not complain anymore! :)

Seriously though, this phone is a beast with charge lasting 2 days.

  • +3

Do these have the bonus $50 starter kit?

    • no. they do not come with the $50 starter kits

  • These Y550 can handle 64 GB cards, just have to format it properly. Ie normal Fat, not exFat

  • Is there any bargain for 64gb SD card atm on eBay, using "ctech20" voucher?

  • +5

Don't wait, go Kmart now! Seems like they put out the lable early cuz it scanned at 99 still but the checkout dude adjusted it so i just picked up last 2 y550 at hurstville Kmart for 49 each.

  • +1

I guess all the Y550 are gone now? I tried Kmart Burwood/Ashfield and all gone.

I wish we could buy online…

    • +1

I got one at Ashfield Kmart this morning and there was only one or two more left.

  • Just got last 2 from Kmart Chadstone

They won't do rainchecks and no matter how much I pleaded, they didn't go down to catalogue price last night.

I just rocked up as soon as they opened and bought them.

Someone called and asked for them while the checkout guy was filling out the AMTA forms for me…

PS these don't have the $50 SIM starter kit.

    • Thanks was wondering if it had the starter kit.

  • +3

    $45 at Hardy Normal :D

    • +1

I paid $68 for 2 after using my flybuys points as well.

I'm still better off than the HN deal for out of pocket real money, otherwise I would have defo jumped on HN

      • +1

You guys must be lucky getting two at once, as most of the time my local Kmart will only give me one at a time, and I need to do a sneeky work around to get more. There is a Harvey Norman just up the road, so @ $45 ( apparently no starter credit included same as Kmart ) an absolut bargain.

  • +2

    FYI

Sold out at all Kmarts I went to but I managed to pick one up at Dick Smith as they price matched it.

  • Here is an easy way to root Android devices such as phones, etc…
    http://www.kingoapp.com/android-root.htm
    Enjoy.

    • +1

Kingo doesn't work with the y550

  • +1

More than 10 left in Casuarina, Darwin :)

  • I think mine is borked :( Will they exchange it for me?? what are they like with exchanges/refunds for Major faults. Should i go Armed with consumer law?

  • $49 with $50 starter kit included at Coles, just picked one up from mount Ommaney store, sign said $99 but scanned at $49

  • Unlocked Y550 via bagman's website - got codes within 30 minutes

Thoroughly impressed with the phone too btw!
