Cathay Pacific to Asia, Hong Kong from $634, Tokyo $718, Seoul $723, depart SYD/MEL/BNE/ADL

1190

I have never been a preacher for travel agencies, but this time they have me beat. I spent hours and couldn't find a better deal for upcoming months on a decent airline.

Prices are identical at FlightCentre or StudentFlights, in-person or online. Though you can always try STA Travel or Expedia if you want to price match and maybe beat the extra fees.

Slightly better than the last Cathay deal

ANNOYING FEES
* $28 booking fee per person
* Credit Card surcharge - Visa 1.98%, Amex 2.97%, MasterCard 1.98%, Diners 3% (not included in example fares)
You can avoid credit card fees by paying with Direct Debit or BPay, but you may need to contact an agent to do so.

All flights are via Hong Kong and on to many Asian cities. Fares appear to be available for most times of the year up until November. Not much to be found in July though. No idea when this sale ends because it doesn't appear to be advertised anywhere (this is the only one I've found that comes close, but says Oct 7 to Nov 13 only).

Example Return Fares per person (booking fee included!):

Sydney to Hong Kong DIRECT - $651
Sydney to Tokyo - $735
Sydney to Seoul - $740
Melbourne to Hong Kong DIRECT - $634
Melbourne to Tokyo - $718
Melbourne to Seoul - $723
Brisbane to Hong Kong DIRECT - $650
Brisbane to Tokyo - $735
Brisbane to Seoul - $739
Adelaide to Hong Kong DIRECT (limited dates) - $639
Adelaide to Tokyo (limited dates) - $723
Perth to Hong Kong DIRECT - $631

Open-jaws are available if you talk to an agent. I've booked SYD-HND + ICN-SYD for $743pp.

I suggest including the mandatory booking fees in the prices which are listed in the title.

    • +4

      They are included.
      Hong Kong from $634.
MEL to HKG return is $634 ($606 + $28 booking fee).

  • +1

Hot damn are these some insane prices

  • so would this work for Sydney -> HK -> Taiwan??

    • Yes it should. SYD-TPE-SYD comes to around $718 incl booking fee.

  • +2

Better deals can be found at Flight Centre Website
    http://www.flightcentre.com.au/flights/airfare-sale

Melbourne to Hong Kong Return from $599!

    • Nice. Got the email earlier today but didn't bother opening it. $699 Sydney - Tokyo return!

    • Student flights is a Flight Centre Company, if you call either they will do the fare on the other site

    • Don't forget your $28 booking fee :)
That would come to $627pp for Oct 7 to Nov 13. My deal MEL-HKG is $634pp, available heaps of dates between now and Dec. Though Chaos is right, all the same company, so probably worth giving them a call.

    • I got an email from Flight Centre for $50 off offer:
"…To help get your next trip off to a flying start we are offering $50 off your next holiday booking!˜ Remember to quote the promotion code XXXXXXXXXXXX to your consultant by 10/07/2015…."

Can I use this promotion code online to book the flight?

  • Most of the bargain flights seem to be from 7 October 'till mid November.

  • -2

So need to travel in April 2015 yet no promo…

  • I wonder what fare base is it…could be useful for my status run.

    • +1

This seems to be booked in lowly S class so I doubt you can earn status anywhere. (Either CX or QF)

    • +1

It's fare class 'S' if that helps. Which means absolutely nothing for Qantas FF unfortunately (no status, no points).

      • As expected, thanks fellas :D

  • +2

Great deal, and also great write-up.

  • um isn't airport tax etc a few hundred on top?

    • all included..

    • Since its through Australian travel agent, it's against the law to not include it so you should assume it.

  • I sit to be corrected but isn't CX only allowing 20kg check-in baggage vs 30kg on QF? I am looking to fly to HKG at the end of this month and I got a quote today from a travel agency for $788 on QF which I thought was rather cheap.

    • You are correct. CX = 20kg, QF = 30kg. Doing some shopping eh? :)

      • +1

hehe…that extra 10kg means I can squeeze in another tiger rice cooker and a soy milk maker that I always wanted to have :)

        • +1

I've never heard of a soy milk maker! I want one now!

    • Unofficially, you can get away with 23.4kg on CX…

Plus they never check how heavy hand carry is…

      • +1

no offence but I don't mind if they check hand carry on luggage. I've witnessed some families' carry-on bag size which clearly exceed the standard allowance as well as seeing 2 adults required to lift one cabin bag into the overhead compartment.

      • While they don't weight your hand carry but they seem to carry out inspections at the bridge. I've seen people getting caught out when there's excessive hand luggage being chugged along.

    • You can save a bit if you take less clothes, laundry is 30 hkd for 6lbs, sometimes cheaper and usually 3.5 to half day service. Adding an extra lb or 2 is only a little more, maybe 2 aud

      • Or do any self respecting Ozbargainer would do: Wear all your clothes onto the plane. Simples.

  • I flew with them to Tokyo last year, it was good but had to stop in HK for 10 hours on the way there - looks like you don't have to with this deal.

  • +1

Anyone know if it's possible to "stop over" in Hk on the way to Tokyo with this promo?

    • +1

you can have a stopover both ways if you want, it is in the fare rules
but you can't book that yourself, you'll have to go to a store or do it on the phone to get a stopover..

Wonder when these outdated online booking systems will ever allow us to choose our own stopovers, so useless..

  • Just transfer 180k points redeeming 4 tickets, but this is a good deal for SYD-HKG-NRT. Should save the points for later.

  • Has anyone actually successfully booked this ? I went through all the crap on Flight Centre only for the last 4 digits box not to accept any numbers
Love the question in the process that asks are you dealing with any person or centre specifically so they can claim their bloody commision
I was very happy to say no get stuffed to that question.

tried AMEX that was fine, went to pay and then there was a payment error and wanted me to call them..
waste money on one phone call to find their call centre is now closed. useless bastards..

So went to student flights, everything went straight through fine, payment and all.

Can't wait for the phone call tomorrow from dumb flight centre asking for payment
only for me to tell them they are useless and I took my business elsewhere…

    • +4

You didn't take your business elsewhere. Student Flights is owned by Flight Centre Travel Group.

      • +1

        Ahh bugger…

  • +1

SYD-HND + ICN-SYD … May I ask how you will be traveling HND - ICN?

    • +3

Flying Jeju Air. 6,000 yen plus taxes came to about $100pp. Booked on the official site.

  • +1

This is a great price, but during school holidays it costs $1100.

In general what's a good price if I can only travel during school holidays (Sat 19th September - Sun 4th October / Sat 19th December - Mon 25th January) from:
    1. Sydney to Seoul?
    2. Sydney to Tokyo?

    • +1

Probably $500-600 excluding luggage if you catch the general or BOGOF Jetstar sale.

  • +1

Is it worth paying the 1.98% fee if pay by Visa/Master card for the complimentary travel insurance? which equates to $12.68. I probably should.

    • Depends what your credit card demands.
I'm using Bankwest No Fee Platinum for travel insurance, which only asks that $500 of your holiday be booked with your card (flights, accommodation, tours etc.). Bought my flights using BPAY, then easily put over $500 in hotels onto card to activate insurance. Best of both worlds.

  • I can't seem to find neither on flight centre nor on student flights. Only way I could get this deal is via phone call to their call centre from https://www.flightcentre.com.au/flights/seoul/3595140

JoelT, how did you get to the screens you have attached? I am trying from MEL to SEOUL from the 10th of Oct to the 21st of Oct. When I tried Sydney from their search engine, it works fine.

    • I'm just using the StudentFlights search engine
It appears MEL to Seoul in't available departing Oct 10 or 11, and returning Oct 21-24 is out too.

      They are available departing Oct 8, 9, 12, 13, 14
      and returning Oct 18, 20, 25, 26, 27

If you can shift your travel one day forward: Oct 9 to 20

  • +1

Thanks OP, going to Seoul for the second time this year now.

SOLD! Just bought tickets for the whole family, Thanks OP!

  • How is Cathay economy? I'm a big fella, so i don't want to be too cramped (I flew BA to LHR recently, was ok in Emergency)… is there an option later on to book emergency?!

  • Hi guys, does anyone know if this fare works the reverse direction, eg HK to Syd return? Thanks.

    • hi, this is late reply but I don't think it works in the reverse direction, I emailed them about Tokyo to Syd return and they told me the deal is only ex Australia.

  • +1

    Thanks!
Booked my honeymoon flights for Sept/Oct down at the FlightCentre office.

Paid under $700 each total, Sydney to Hong Kong, then Beijing to Sydney swapping planes in Hong Kong.
Now to plan the 3 weeks in the middle…

  • tomorrow, i will go to store and make booking.
hopefully i can do direct deposit

    • You can do eftpos with no fees, as long as you dont have a card daily limit.

  • ZzzzZzzz deal expired?

    • Yeah looks like they've dried up.

  • Anyone got the actual eticket yet? I purchased through their office/shop, they say the eticket usually comes 48 hours or later and he'll email it to me once he gets it. All i got is a Student Flight invoice, it doesn't look like a eticket though. I paid for one HK flight on Sunday and paid for another Korea flight on Monday. Nothing through email yet….

    • Mine took about 24 hours to come through via email, but I paid with BPay and they had to wait for payment verification on their end. If it's been 5 days with nothing else from them, I'd be giving them a call.

Does you invoice has a Cathay reference number on it (PNR)? If so, you can check out your flights in the Manage My Booking section of the Cathay website.

Or if you've got a student flights reference number, try accessing this site https://www.viewtrip.com/sfau/home.aspx

  • I was in the same boat. Got my invoice but no e-ticket but after calling them up , I received my e-ticket via email instantly.
