Dodo Electricity 20% off Usage Charges in NSW and Bonus $100 off Bill

151

I had to sort out a payment change and noticed that Dodo is now offering 20% off electricity for NSW customers, with no mention of whether it was for existing customers too. I was on the existing 13% on time discount. When I was on live chat I asked if I'm eligible for the 20% on time discount and he applied it to my account.

Unlike other providers, this discount is "applied after calculating all the charges on the account." (quote from the their website). A lot of other providers don't discount the daily access fee.

It's a pretty decent discount.

Accoding to JuggaloG "Also Heard on the radio if you quote "Triple M" (maybe "MMM") and you will get $100 off your first bill"

Hope it helps someone :)

Mod: Members have reported the 20% discount is on usage/consumption only, not the total bill (conflicting information present perhaps). "20% Pay On Time Discount off your electricity consumption."

got 26% from AGL (NSW, electricity).

    Shop around.

    • I think Dodo's discount is off the service charge too though

      • In Vic it's 30% discount if you combine it with Gas(20% discount). I believe its only on usage though.

        • And another 2% off if you set up direct debit (applies with gas as well). Comes to a total of 32% off but I think its only off usage not the whole bill and $50 one off discount if signing up online.. They also give Flybuy points.

      • Can you please point to where it says

applied after calculating all the charges on the account.

Looking at their cost calculator, the discount excludes the supply charges (daily charges). When I looked at https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/ it also suggested it was discounting the usage only.

This is a good deal (and a new deal), but I'm not certain it discounts both supply and usage.

    • Hey battler, can you tell me what plan that is on? I thought I was onto a good deal with origin 18% off usage, but 26% is ridiculous!

      • undocumented plan.

also, imperative that you check the rates that the discount is applied to.
Not all rates are the same - particularly if you are on an older plan.

        • +1

That's 26% off usage rate, not 26% off total bill. You don't get a discount on the daily service charge.

        • correct, discount is on usage.
my rough calc on 26% discount on usage would put me at $15 better off last quarter than 20% off total bill.
          YMMV

    • 26%? I couldn't get them over 16%. They even called to ask why I was leaving them, still wouldn't go past 16%… In the process of switched to Red.

It's a shame that these companies do not automatically apply these new improved discounts automatically when eligible.

Dodo were the same with my old ADSL2 connection, paying $xx a month when I could have saved $1 (yes just $1) but upgrade from a 100GB to Unlimited plan.

    • Well that's because to be honest it's not really their responsibility..
Their in the business to make money. Providing you with a good deal is really secondary, particularly if it doesn't make them money.

Of course from a customer satisfaction point of view it may not be very good (once the customer finds out).

  • I heard a lot of Dodo's scary stories (ISP wise), are they reliable electricity wise?

    • +13

Be very careful, your electricity may drop out during peak times! ;)

      • +6

I've also heard about their congestion.

You need to share the 240V with everyone else in your street… Lucky to get 12V in the evenings !!!!

        • +4

All jokes aside :) Dodo just does billing…. no issues for me over 3 years.

    • Do you think that little bird flaps it's wings & produces the electrons?

I'd be checkign the fine print to see how they bill (since that's all they do).
I have a feeling they estimate you usage & bill you, and only later check usages vs billed.

      • produces the electrons?

        So how are electrons produced?

        • +5

          by birds flapping their wings.

        • Remember all things comes from hole
          .. black hole

    • the internet with Dodo was mostly ok it was the customer service on those few times that was scary….talking to people who claim your house doesn't exist, claim there is no phoneline in the building (after having the service for 1 year) etc. etc.

Their online platform is great and their support is very easy to deal with. I've been with them since 2013 and just moved gas over. They confirmed it will be a single bill.

Wouldn't go with them for ADSL, but for handling billing duties, they're fine. They were happy to refund me the massive credit I had accumulated as they deduct from you in advance.

    • I was with them for electricity and it was straightforward. Signing was fine and leaving went smoothly. They refunded any credit. I left (may have just been bad timing from me) because they put up the base prices which made them more expensive then some others even after what looked like generous discounts.

Dodo's billing system is a tough one to understand and truly keep track of. They also do not immediately pass on any kind of discount, I chased them on various occasions. I was with them from the get go for Electricity and then Gas in VIC. I changed to AGL mid last year but will probably move to Momentum next as they are the cheapest for me.

    • Carlenet,

I suggest you to go through Powershop who are cheaper than Momentum.
I'm a Powershop customer and happy with the service so far.

      • Thanks for your suggestion syamcvaa2. I always do the comparison website thing and will be doing it in the next few months hence will see who comes out on top for my electricity and gas. :)

        • Powershop are different and I don't think are reflected well in those comparison websites.

      • Generous referral bonuses from Powershop as well:
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/powershop_referral_links

  • Any good deal for QLD customers?

    • +3

Yeah, there's some cheap flights to Melbourne…

    Dodo Electricity 20% off

I got 24% off from Origin a while back, so 20% off is NO bargain…

    • You need to check:

      1. WHAT it discounts, many are on usage only not supply.

      2. Whats the base costs, they vary a lot.

Here in Vic the government have the switchon website where you get your last years smart meter data, plug it into the site and it will tell you the cost with each retailler before and after discounts, that way its the historical cost on YOUR usage not a guesstimate.

      • -2

        You need to check:

        Why ? the OP didn't…

        • so :(

    • hey boss, see if your discount is for the entire bill or just the KW usage

      • -3

see if your discount is for the entire bill or just the KW usage

your deal just compare the %off… I can get a better %off elsewhere… No bargain…

        • -1

          Take it easy Mario

      • The discount is only off usage charges, I just checked an old bill.

And yes JV, it was a $100 bill. ;)

EDIT - It also says only off usage rates on their website hence you need to amend the title.

    • in the words of JV 24% off what?

      • -1

        24% off what?

        electricity

        • +2

So you only get 182.4 volts out?

        • @jv:
          so you only get ~130V?

    • +1

OP should change the title to NSW.
I'm glad you got a Bargain that good in Vic but us Waratahs have to make do with 17% most days

      • +1

        Added :)

will make a call today, thank you for sharing, Bellpop!

% of discount is not really important, it's the rate per kWh that you are looking for. No point getting 50% discount if their rate is 2 x the other providers. And also check if the discounts if off the daily charge too. I am currently with DODO (20% discount, no gas) and never have a problem so far. I will need to compare the latest promotional rates from other providers to get a better deal soon.

    • -2

% of discount is not really important

So this post is not really a bargain then…

      • No it's a bargain…..unless you're a numpty who locked yourself into a 2yr contract with some other reseller who gives you a higher % off some small part of the total calculation, but overall you still pay much more.

Thankfully no one in OzB would be that stupid.

    • +1

I thought there was some government legislation on the rate that all providers charge.. that it has to be below a specific value.

    • agl qld's daily rates & usages rates are slightly higher than dodo's.

you do need to check "% off what"

  • +2

Contacted them through live chat and they applied the 20% discount straight away. Thanks OP.

    • just wondering if you can check or gotta wait till the bill goes through and see 20% applied?

I can't see anywhere that I'm getting the 15% off atm

  • you need to compare their kw rate and daily rates as these can be very high at times making the real discount negligible

  • You can compare your rates with AGL here. Note that it won't include discounts, just kW and Supply charge comparison.

  • -1

    Great deal here

  • note that if you have a concession, dodo sneakily apply to the concession to the usage before the discount. ie, the % off amount = (usage - concession) * %off

Unlike other providers, this discount is "applied after calculating all the charges on the account." (quote from the their website). A lot of other providers don't discount the daily access fee.

i think you are misinterpreting it

    • -1

In other words they are discounting your concession, just as you are discounting their rates!

  • I did quick maths for my household it will cost me $40/year over the absolute best price in the market for electricity but does not come with a contract. Happy to pay a bit more to not be locked in and more flexible.
The gas rates are however ridiculous even with a 20% discount.

I can confirm that the discount is ONLY FOR USAGE CHARGES.

  • Following your link:

    20% Off Electricity Usage
Discount applies off Dodo’s usage rates when paid on time

Where do you get the discount off supply charge?

  • +1

Thanks, Im already a dodo customer getting 15% off. I rang up and received 20% off without a hassle.Easy savings.

  • +2

Also Heard on the radio if you quote "Triple M" (maybe "MMM") and you will get $100 off your first bill, maybe OP could add that to the front?

  • +1

I also contacted AGL today and found that the best deal they can give is 18% off electricity and 14% on a 12 month contract and you get $50. But their rates are higher. My contract finishes with AGL in 2 weeks so i will be calling Dodo up to see what they can do.

  • Just got rejected - they're saying I have to transfer gas from other provider only then I'll be eligible. Since I only have existing elec account with them, its a no-no. =(

  • Just got this done at Burwood NSW store (in Westfield). Was assisted by Sandra who was very helpful and informative!!

Also got told that you can get an additional $20 credit from Dodo if you take a call from their telemarketers selling you their insurance, and you do not necessarily have to purchase any insurance. Maybe add this to the OP?

    • They have a kiosk there? Did she clarify if it's only discount on usage? Or discount on total bill? Also did you manage to quote Triple M to get the $100 off first bill?

Is there a contract term for Dodo? Or can I quit anytime?

      • Sorry for the late reply.
Yea they have a kiosk there. It's 20% discount on usage.
She actually gave me the $100 discount which she said was being offered "for the next few days" without me mentioning Triple M.

        No contract.

  • Hi Guys,

Go with Origin Energy has they have really stepped up their game recently. If you want someone to talk to you, I will refer you and you will get a call on the same day.

    http://www.originenergy.com.au/for-home/electricity-and-gas/…

The rates are attractive as well compared to other elec/gas companies.

    Cheers,
    Ed

  • So tried to get the 20% and advised by rep this only for new customers signed with electricity and gas… and the $100 bonus no longer applies… :(
