      And store.

        and model.

      • Bought mine at Auburn HN

    • All models different prices, wasn't sure if to include or not.

Surface 3 will be so much more value. Esp when it will come with LTE later in the year.

    • +5

the cpu of Surface 3 is weak, and you need to buy pen separately.

    • Not true. After you factor in the cost of keyboard and active stylus, it's not better value. It's just simply a cheaper alternative. I say alternative because basically with cost savings you get a low spec

    • The thing I love the most about the surface pro 3 is the flexibility to adjust the kick stand and high resolutions. U wont get that with the Surface 3, 3 positions adjustment and lower resolutions.

  • +3

    I wouldn't consider 0.98% off as a bargain.

  • +2

I don't think they have different warranties, they are just manufacturer warranty, which is 1 year warranty.

I guess JB Hifi deliberately added 1 more year of 3rd party warranty just to differentiate themselves with HN?

If you buy from JB, make sure you get them to write on paper that it has 2 yr warranty. As according to their website, it says 1 year warranty:
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/tablets/microsof…

Check the detailed tab, and it says clearly there, 1 year warranty.

    • +1

No need to ask them to write on receipt or anything, as long as you register with Microsoft, log in the site with your Microsoft account (like hotmail or outlook.com ones), you can see the harware warranty period, clearly states at least 24 months since date of activation (i bought a Surface Pro 2 one month before i activated it)

  • +1

JB are just being decent and honouring the law, the statutory warranty that you will be just as entitled to if you purchased it at HN. HN will deny it, trying to suck extra warranty out of you.

    • Are you sure they will honour it? It doesn't say on their website anywhere that it is 2 years. They could be just saying that to avoid you from Price matching it. Make sure you get them to write on the receipt that it is 2yrs.

I can imagine 1.5yr later it breaks, and you bring it to JB, and they check MS website and says 1 year, then they will say "Manufacturer warranty only 1 year", and then refuse you. Then you mention that they said 2 years, and they are like "Where is your proof?" ….. so ensure you have the above warranty written in your receipt.

      • JB have a handout that states the warranty in terms of cost/price paid.

        https://www.jbhifi.com.au/Documents/Consumer%20Warranties%20…

I'm pretty sure that is based on the law and not specific to them.

        • Based on the law, but the law itself is pretty ambiguous.
As long as you can argue your way e.g. justify that the item purchased should have at least a certain period of life.

e.g. a $5000 LED tv should last at least 5 years or 10 years depending on how you argue it.

        • @lplau:
"Pretty" ambiguous? All it says anywhere is that warranties should last a "reasonable" amount of time.

They issued a clarifying document later where they had ONE example:
"If you pay $1800 for a TV, it should last more than two years"

How much more? They didn't say.

        • @KentT: exactly, its ambiguous. Haven't come across any court cases yet though of people testing this lol.

Great tablet/laptop! The Surface products are rarely discounted more than 10%, unless superseded by newer models.
You want to add Pro Type Cover though.

  • +4

I got 2 Surface Pro and 1 Surface Pro 2 before, I can confirm that Microsoft offer 2 years of warranty, just register your product on Microsoft site and when you log in with your Microsoft account (either hotmail, outlook, etc), you will see the warranty period which is at least 24 months, i'm not sure but probably 26 months

Probably the reason for most upcoming Surface 3 sales
Surface pro 4 may unveil april 29

    • That article was terrible. They just shoved a bunch of rumours together into barely coherent sentences.

      • I'd like to believe this, but then why would MS bother to put the May price rises knowing full well the new models will simply push the prices of the old models back down again?

EDIT: there's a comment in the other JB deal mentioning ~20% increases in prices across the Surface Pro 3 line due to the AUD currency devalue…

        • While the article was all over the place, it did have a fairly conservative release date of October for the SP4, which aligns with Skylake rumours. Actually, practically the whole article could be referring to Skylake.

That's still a good 5 months for pricing adjustments.

        • @TheContact:

Yeah, sorry the reply was supposed to be to magoo's post, not yours. In other words: why would they bother to update the pricing if the SP4 was going to be released in May? Then again, while the Skylake thing is plausible it's only as compelling as MS wanting to have a new piece of hardware for the Windows 10 launch.

for example this is my surface pro 2 warranty info
    Surface Pro 2 256GB (Serial # 00**********)
    Technical support expired: 02/11/2014
    Hardware warranty expires: 03/08/2016

    • I can vouch for that as well :P

I bought my Surface Pro 1 on 2014
      Hardware warranty expires 11/05/2016
      Technical support expired 10/08/2014

so OP can update the title that it includes 2 years warranty no matter who you purchased the Surface product from

    • Will update, that's pretty interesting, nice and weird!

      • +1

:), sometimes corps in Australia have to obey Australian laws with warranty but somehow they would not make it so obviously that consumers are entitled with 2 years of warranty, Apple does the same thing and more sneaky than Microsoft as they ask you for an original receipt for the 13th-26th month warranty period (Apple provides up to 26 months) and only shows 1 year when you check on their site

        • Yeah I was thinking about that so I went to the ACCC but couldn't find it?
Could you link me if you find it? :)

      • Sucks to be me, but just checked out my warranty after registering, and mine expires 06/26/2016… NOT 2017!

I don't know what the conditions are for it to be 2 years, but whatever it is, I didn't qualify.

        (Purchased from JB Hifi)

        • mine expires 16/02/2017, also bought from JB Hifi last week, it seems that people get random periods for warranty?

  • I fond it hard to believe they offer two separate warranty's when the vendor SKU is the same,

How does JB offer double warranty on the Surface when the site lists 12 months?

    • +1

Ask webtherapist, I think he has a Surface Pro.

      • +1

JbHifi is right to offer the first 12 months as this is their responsibility (after sale), they simply just help you with contacting and sending the product to Microsoft for warranty purposes, hence you can have the first year with either JBHiFi (the retailer you purchased the product) or Microsoft, and the second year you have to deal with Microsoft directly (you can find these fine print on Microsoft's site). Same with Apple Australia, you can have the first year warranty with either the seller/retailer (Au stock, ABN and tax receipt included) or Apple Store (walk in) & Apple Australia (online or via phone support and they will arrange pick up and return services for you without cost, as long as the faults not caused by you), the second year is totally from Apple Australia and their Apple Stores.
PEOPLE still love buying Apple products because of their convenience about warranty, you never need a receipt for the first year warranty and you never worry too much if you live in rural areas as they provide really professional level of after sale services

        • I know. I was trying to make a joke lol, as I saw you made the same comment 3 times in here and the forums.

        • @ozhunter: lol

  • 128gb model is $1065 at HN which is a pretty decent price.

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/computers-tablets/ipads-surfa…

  • I contacted Microsoft a few times both today and yesterday, and all of them say that Microsoft only offers 1 year warranty. They say, if you want 2 years you need to buy an extended warranty. I am considering cancelling my order with them if this is the case. Can someone shed some light on this? Why is there such discrepancy between what they officially say and what people are receiving? Or am I just missing something?

    • I think the confusion for this came into effect when the laws required telcos to provide 2 years warranty on devices to match up with 24 month contracts. Tablets fall into a murky territory which makes them neither mobile device nor computer. Don't think tablets normally have 2 years - the earlier Surface devices might have been an exception (for whatever reason).

Confirmed with a MS Store chat rep that it's only 1 year warranty.

      • Thanks mate.
Is that why @webtherapist is saying that the reason for getting 2 years warranty was because it was a SP1 and SP2?

@Webtherapist says that you will get 2 years from MS now, though!

I haven't been more confused :( I don't know if I should pull the pin on the SP3 I bought of MS or wait til I receive it, check the warranty online and only if it is less than 2 years return it. I don't want to return this but then find out that all the sales at JB hifi are finished :(

        Never been so confused :(

        • +1

Just keep it. Nothing to be confused about. You have 14 days to return it, no questions:
          http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/en_AU/DisplayHelpR…

You're also covered under Australia Consumer Law regardless of whether the warranty is 1 or 2 years.

Also check which credit card you paid with (if you paid with a credit card) to see if you get a free extended warranty cover through them anyway - Amex will cover even if you used Paypal as an intermediary, for instance…

        • @zzyss: Yeah i think you're right. I will keep the order and will see when it comes.
I did pay with Amex and i didn't know that, but yes it does come with extra warranty… but i don't know how pedantic they will be when they have to honour it.

Anyway thanks mate. I appreciate your help :D

        • +1

It's 2 years warranty. I just checked mine out. When you receive it, go and register it per webtherapist's instructions and then it'll inform you that it is 2 years.

    • +1

      Hi guys,

I purchased my SP3 from JB HI-FI in late March and I registered with MS directly online for warranty. I just checked my warranty cover and it shows I have warranty until 2 June 2017 - yay! So there is more than 2 years warranty being offered by MS. I'm not sure what's going on, but this is as per MS's website "check warranty status". Happy to post a screen shot of my "check warranty status", but I dont know how to. Maybe someone can advise?

      • I am a newbie here too, so i don't know how to do that… But i think the best option is to upload using a image hosting site. But, in terms of the warranty, did you have to input that you purchased it through JB HiFi? I am curious to know whether microsoft have allocated a certain amount of serial no.s to JB hifi and when people input it into the site it automatically registers them as having 2 years since they bought it from JB (somewhat like a free extension of warranty for the people who bought from JB). I hope i am being delusional and my worst fears don't come true. But for the time being i am holding off till i can confirm. fingers crossed

        • +1

all you gotta do is register the product via Microsoft site when you first start using it, nothing else you need to do as Microsoft automatically kicks the warranty in, in my case I got mine for a month before I started using it and still Microsoft kicked warranty in from date of activation which is a bit weird

        • +1

I'll send you a PM with my screen shot. Webtherapist is right, you just need to register on Microsoft online with your serial number and it should show up with at least 2 years warranty. Good luck!

        • mine expires 16/02/2017, less than 2 years, bought from JB Hifi last week

      • Is anyone else having problems with registering the warranty? I go to the website and login, choose the model and put in my serial number, then nada. The page doesn't do anything.

        • I received mine yesterday and already registered with no problem. Maybe give them a call

  • It's back up to ~$1500

    • $1849 now! I was going to get one but I think I will wait.
