Seems unlikely to me but not impossible. Do you mind linking your source?

        • +1

          That's interesting. I found a followup article.

Turns out it was a container of radium buried. It seems like a rare occurrence though. If you really are concerned then buy a geiger counter, it doesn't have to be a "you never know" game.

        • @rolypoly:
that would be hilarious walking around tokyo with a geiger counter. Problem is, once, it's triggered, it's too late. Your body's already been exposed.

        • +1

@gorge: Haha, I am totally up for that, if I could afford a decent geiger counter. I think it would just be a cool device to own. Exposure is time dependent though.

Unless the radiation is directed somehow it should follow the inverse square law. And things in the way (such as dirt) will also decrease the amount of radiation. So the counter wont suddenly go crazy it will rise slowly as you reach the source so there is plenty of time to bail once you think something fishy is going on.

Also given the park example if you walk in and discover the needle shoots up to 480 microsieverts per hour and you get out in five minutes. You would have been exposed to 40 microsieverts. 40 microsieverts is the same amount of radiation a person would be exposed to flying from New York to LA by just being in the plane. A chest x-ray is 20 microsieverts and a chest CT scan is 7000 microsieverts. If I were a pilot I would not be too concerned about the radiation experienced daily. If I were in that park I would get myself out of there asap.

I also think Japan would be one of the places that would be harder to hide radioactive material though. Since fukushima, geiger counter sales there have had a huge surge and I highly suspect that was how this park was discovered; by some random just messing around with their geiger counter.

~ Just to be a bit more complete, a lot of radiation in a short time is worse than the same amount spread out over a long time because it doesn't give time for cells to repair themselves.

I don't think these prices are great anymore.

Once you add on things like checked luggage, and that most flights are super early in the morning, AND it isn't direct, you have to stop and think is it worth it?

I've found direct flights in October with Japan Airline, with checked luggage and a more complete service for $923. And the flight isn't at a ridiculous hour - 9am departure - 5pm arrival.

    • +1

I suppose it depends on the person and how much importance they put on that sort of thing. For me personally, i'd rather save the $300 and use it towards my holiday but I can understand how that amount could be worth it for others to spent for the extra convenience and comfort.

    • I am planning to go with JAL and wondering where did you get the JAL flight for $923? Maybe time to use my QFF points from CC 'freebies'.

I flied with Jetstar before and the layover is still acceptable. Though if you are bringing kids, then go with direct flights.

      • Check skyscanner

        Also, flying from SYD

    • +1

Agreed. Cathay in the past have had a number of sales for sub-$700 Sydney-Tokyo rt, for which you're getting a much, much better hard and soft product alongside baggage and meals. Personally I don't fly LCCs unless they're at least 40% cheaper (though they usually are). If you want cheap, wait for a Cebu Pacific sale, I'm flying Sydney-Tokyo for $341 rt (SYD-MNL rt $143 + MNL-NRT rt $198) in August this year.

  • lol i just paid $1400 return leaving on 27 dec

  • For those looking to travel from Perth, try looking at JAL to get to Japan.

I flew Jetstar from Perth to Tokyo and back on a sale fare in February, but the long connection time in Cairns was a pain.

The dreamliner is good, my biggest gripe with jetstar except for all the additional fees, is the lack of a seat pocket on all flights. I'd like somewhere to put a magazine or ipad during the flight other than at my feet.

I'm looking at going back in January 2016 (This sale not Valid), and you can get good fare and connections on full service airline partners using JAL ticketing. For my dates early Jan to late Jan, under $1000 return from Perth flying Cathay to Hong Kong, JAL to Japan, JAL Japan to Kuala Lumpur with Malaysian back to Perth. All with short connection times and for about $100 more you can stop over in Hong Kong or KL.

Another benefit is JAL being a full service carrier, meals drinks, and seat selection are included in the Price. JAL also allows 2 23kg cases each, great for bringing back all your shopping and Kit Kats.

  • We have managed to get myself, wife and 2 kids (over 2 years old) from Canberra to Tokyo and back on Qantas. September outwards. About$3200 which is pretty good.

We have flown jetstar, jal, Cathay, garuda and Malaysian before. I think Malaysian was the best, but we are pretty easy to please.

  • So many holidays I want to do, so few single travelling friends to do them with……

    • Hi Rajen. Just play around with the dates but December is a popular time to travel. You can leave December 2 and come back December 16 for $593.68 return. Still not a bad price.

  • Hey TA

    Im going in June!

  • Thnks harper
I'm planning to go Goldcoast to fukuoka 7nov2015
Osaka to Goldcoast 8-9 dec 2015.
@harper ,any gd deals I could catch.Wht abt waiting few more months for deals jetstar to come ?
    Any ideas mate ?

    • I have just booked something similar for September.

Gold Coast to Osaka, then return from Fukuoka to Gold Coast. The return leg has 10 hours in Tokyo which is great as it gives us a full day in Tokyo :)

I booked my flights through a Flight Centre shop I have been dealing with for year.

Play with the dates as we saved $400 dates on the return leg. Apparetly flights are cheaper if you fly in and out of the same airport.

  • Is water given to you on Jetstar?

    • Yes?. Every airline can give you water.

  • how do you get from japan to germany

    • By plane?

      • frankfurt

        • +1

You're not really offering much in the way of details are you.

As you have not confirmed one way, what month, or from which city in Japan, I did a quick search for one way Tokyo to Frankfurt on the 18th of June.

Lufthansa does it non stop for a price of around A$3000, JAL and ANA also offer non-stop flights.

Aeroflot does one stop for around A$450, but there are also many others like Air Berlin, Etihad, Emirates who do one stop for under A$700.

        • @petestrash:

thanks for helping me. I need to be in Frankfurt on the 20th of June. And I need to leave Frankfurt on the 20th of July.

I live in Brisbane. Do you think the cheapest way is to fly to Japan first? I don't care about stops, just want the cheapest.

          @gorge:

Try playing around with this site, it will give you a good idea of options.
