  • maybe we should take them to court

  • Just called in woolies emergency line, a guy picked up and had no resolution to my query, asked me to call back tomorrow morning. Poor guy must be receiving heaps of angry ozbees!

    • You're lucky you got an answer! I got through to the emergency line almost 5 hours ago and got cut off!

      • Yes I just sorta call in and picked up by poor guy sounded tired.

        • Wasn't the cleaner was it? LOL

      • +1

        same here.

their 24hrs emergency line cut me off every time i call

what if people want to report food emergency ?

    • They will just re-issue the eGift Cards, nothing more. Those who used also gets reissued(they win) and those who didn't they dont win or loose. For our email and Full Name leak they will think about that once the big bosses and legal team of WW are back on Monday but for now Woolies will be counting on the already used GCs which alone might run into several hundred thousand $. But lets see how they come out of this, we will know how a big Aussie stalwart Woolies respond to this. I dont expect anything from Groupon, they wont due anything and hide behind, but Woolies I am sure will resolve for us in a +ve way. Keeping fingers crossed

  • Can anyone confirm exactly what was in the spreadsheet unedited that is?

First name or full? Email address, actual address? Anything else?

Right now it's not about the money, that can wait, it's about how much personal information was released and how many people have it.

    • +3

      |Card Name|Card Value|Recipient Name|Recepient-Email|Sender-Name|Message|eGift Card Link|

Recipient name was generally first name but some were full names. Some email addresses contained full names.

      • Thanks for the info.

    • I did not get the xls in email but saw the post here by tightass in dropbox and my Full Name as there (complete Full Name) and I guess from his comments unedited full email ID as well. Also the gift cards that was ordered, personal message if any and also recipient email address.

So if your groupon you used your primary email address and Full Name, your information has been leaked and probably its a good idea that you reset your password for your groupon email id.

      • +1

Why would I need to change my Groupon password if all they have is my email address and first name?

        • Lol dont do it then, not your Groupon password, the email ID which has been leaked :P

      • -2

Not happy to hear that tightass posted the list online.

        • Get your facts straight before you start getting your knickers in a knot.

I created a new spreadsheet and only copied into it a list of names (first name only) and the dollar value of the gift card. Nothing to get excited about

        • @tight-ass: I could not check as spreadsheet is no longer published.

        • +2

          @argonbay:
As I said - check your facts before you come out making accusations. As if I would publish all the details online…..good one

        • -4

@tight-ass: How can I check what was published if it is no longer there?

        • -1

@tight-ass: Why have you removed it?

        • @argonbay:
Because I didn't realise that the spreadsheet actually had my full name showing as the creator of the spreadsheet, as pointed out by a fellow ozbargainer in one of the comments….hence I removed it

        • @tight-ass: OK then. Not because it had renagade's full name in it?

        • @argonbay:
Give it a rest would you….fool

        • @tight-ass: Got my facts straight now that you have explained what actually happened. Cheers.

  • Just checked my cards and the ones I ordered from Groupon have been canceled but the ones I ordered from cashrewards are still active and I got them all within an hour of each other

    • Only cards purchased from Groupon have had details made public.

  • You think the redundancies have affected their quality of serivice in the gift card and customer service departments?
    :(

  • Just received two emails from Groupon

    1.

Woolworths takes the concerns of its customers and data security seriously.
We experienced a technical fault with an eGift Card sent to customers earlier today. We are working to resolve the issue and are assisting customers
Your previously issued eGift Card /s are now invalid.
We are now in the process of re issuing new eGift Cards which you should receive over the coming hours.
We do apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused, if you have any questions or concerns, please use the 'Contact us' section of the Everyday Gift Cards website.

    2.

    Dear 'Mod Edited',
Groupon Australia is aware of a technical problem which occurred in regards to the send of Big W eGift cards on Friday 29 May. These cards have now been de-activated and will not be redeemable in a Big W store.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused and can assure you that we are working with the Big W eGift card team throughout the weekend to resolve this issue.
The Big W eGift Card Team will be in contact with you as soon as they have a resolution. Rest assured that you will be able to enjoy your eGift card soon!

    • +1

You wanna censure your name in your post…

      • Thanks for the heads up! And to the mod who edited it!

    • JUST got mine!!!!

    • The "shoot" will fly now!

    • i hope woolworths can take this serious now and have a resolution to the leaked information

      • They all will be just silent about it, and us Ozbargainers will be happy even if Groupon/Bigw decides us to put a $20 Gift card, afterall we just want to save and $20 is lot for us for our disposable email IDs. We will all forget and run to WOW to buy that next Coke 24 cans if they offer it for $5.

        • +1

you think so? They will give $20 to apology? I do not think they will do that.

  • Heres the story … lol too late and didnt refresh

  • Shame on your woolies, a compensation would be in line for breach of privacy.

  • Sigh… Looks like wont get the gift cards until big w friends and family 10% off sale is over? How about issue us gift cards plus unique code for the staff Apple sale?

    • Well they said several hours ago in the coming hours, How many hours exactly would that be?

      • 2-4 business hours? i.e. up to a week.

  • Shit guys, someone stole my funds.

I hope it gets reissued, otherwise I will have to be forwarding off the complaint to the police department.

Hopefully even at self-checkouts they have Surveillance as stated so we can put those thieves behind bars.

  • The email I got said to use contact us link on the Everyday gift cards website. I have been trying for the last hour to submit my message but it keeps showing "We are facing issues in submitting your request. Please try again later."

Surely a simple contact us form wouldn't be slammed to the point of not even being able to send a message would it? Do you think they disabled it for now?

  • Looks like our grocery bills will increase by 10% to make up WOW loss on this mess up.

    • +1

Lol they loose like $1 Million in Masters everyday, this is pocket change and few cents for them. They hand out $10 Million just for petty national marketing campaigns

      • So that means they will pay more on marketing campaigns to make up the leak of customer details? That means 20% increase in our grocery bills?

        • +1

From what I have seen here in OzBargain , if we are given some great Woolies deals and some free handout of Gift Cards, I am sure everyone will care less about their Full Name and Email being leaked.

& Lol they cant increase prices on groceries anymore, Aldi/Costco and their horrible earnings can only lead to even lower prices.

        • @regenade: people now have doubt on their security on customer privacy including details in everyday reward cards, online store accounts, our delivery addresses etc. not just for this instance.
There is only WOW and Coles in WA. We can assume IGA wont survive for too much longer. So basically they can set whatever grocery prices they want (who can really prove anti competition and price fixing that easily?).

  • Just received the email for the replacement Petrol eGift card. Still waiting on the Big W one.

  • +3

    what a massive cock up

just the fact the information was stored in plain text in an excel file is very worrying.

additionally, the whole delivery method of sending a pdf by email used by woolworths is very insecure.

  • +2

Just received a Woolworths Gift Card replacement. No Big W replacement as yet. At least they are working on replacements.

Disappointed Woolworths are calling this a "technical fault" and not acknowledging that privacy has been breached.

  • Prolly harsh to negative this deal, as it wasn't Groupon who sent out the deals, but woolies

    • +5

nah, the deal is still terrible because it wasn't delivered when it was supposed to be. terrible customer service at groupon too.

  • +2

didn't see new egift cards in the 'coming hours' timeframe

    • +3

'Coming hours' = anything from 2 to infinity. ;)

    • i am also waiting the cards to buy from BIGW , today is the last day for 10% discount…

    • Prolly going through them one by one to check balances and all that before re-issuing? I did receive the WW GC but still waiting on the BigW one. Hope they get law enforcement involved to catch those crooks.

  • +5

Very disappointing that Woolworths has refused to acknowledge the privacy violation.

Woolworths is bound by the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and as a result, is subject to the complaints handling function of the Privacy Commissioner.

You can complain to the Commissioner - more details here.

    • Yeah this was a serious stuff up no doubt. Technical difficulties my behind. It was bound to happen sooner or later if this is how they actually deal with bulk GC orders.

    • +4

if this is true. I'd applaud you and hope to see you behind bars.

      • -4

I was all like no way there's a fridge costs $4000, dude it won't even fit through the door! But it did!

        • Isn't the flaw in that plan transporting such a large fridge.
It wouldn'tt be hard to find a transaction with min 20 gift card payments.
If it was delivered, you have to supply delivery details.
If you picked it up from a delivery dock, that would have cameras, which would get your license plate, which can be passed onto police.

        • Do Big W even sell fridges that cost $4,000?

        • @aussie28:

you can take bigw e gift cards to bigw or woolworths to buy other stores gift cards like harvey norman, good guys etc. then you can use HN gift cards to buy big fridge

        • +1

@jjj123: Well in that case I hope he ends up behind bars for quite some time. How do these people ever think they will get away with fraud and is it really worth it?

        • -2

And he was all dude do I really have to drag this thing on a pallet truck for half a km down the road. And I'm all you need cash to support that meth habit dontcha boy? And he did!

        • -7

@durd0008: On a more serious note. Why do you all even care? A company leaked personal information about you and doesn't appear to be looking to reconcile that error. At least someone made them pay for it, and if it wasn't me it'd of been someone else. My actions in no way, shape or form had any effect on the eventual, and predictable outcome.

        • +4

          @herpaderpafer:

          Just don't drop the soap.

        • +1

@dins: I actually hope he does.

  • +2

Not sure why some ppl are blaming Groupon here. They actually honoured the deal. They would have to pass on names and email addresses to WW so that WW can send out the GCs obviously. But WW stuffed everything up. Seriously why would you have everyone's GCs, names and email addys on an excel file like that? Ridiculous!

    • -2

Part of the problem seems that groupon sent 1 large batch of orders, which WW then made the stuff up over. If groupon had sent the data each day, instead of holding all orders so they could make as much interest as possible by holding everyones cash until the last minute, the scale of the problem may have been alot smaller.

I have bought egcs direct from WW website & they quote 12 hours for delivery, it's usually much less. Yet groupon orders for the same products take 4 days to be delivered. Why? Because they do not pass the orders on to WW for days & days. So groupon has contributed to this situation with their practices.

      • That's all speculation tho. We don't really know what the arrangements were between Groupon and WW for this deal. What we do know is that WW sent the excel file to some ppl including a few crooks. WW stuffed up big time no doubt about it.

        • It's not all speculation. WW quote delivery within 12 hours. Groupon quote delivery in 2-4 business days. People on this thread were complaining it had been more than 5 days since buying on groupon, & their egcs still hadn't been delivered.

Did you see the size of the file posted on OZB with customer details yesterday. You think over $1.3 million WW egcs were sold by groupon in 1 day?

        • @spacecowboy:

Pretty sure Groupon messed up by allowing the 15% off code to be used for this deal. So prolly were not expecting having to deal with this many orders. I think the last time this happened they cancelled the orders. But this time they honoured them. So I can't really fault Groupon here. They were not the ones who sent the excel file to some shady ppl.

        • @spacecowboy: Yes $1.3 million is not a big amount here, did you check the XLS. Most of the people ordered in avg >$1000 in GCs per person. So probably we are just talking around ~1300-$1500 individual persons here.

        • @regenade: Yes I checked XLS, I was on it. Ordered the first day of the deal, egcs not sent until yesterday morning.

  • I hope they catch those crooks somehow. Absolute scum!

    • +1

Woolworths? Now, to wait for the TV news reports…

      • +1

And the scum is an Ozbargainer , herpaderpafer (Probably signed up with a new ID today with a disposable sim card). 3 X iPhone 6 + 1 $4000 Fridge :(

        • Pretty sure there were more than one going on shopping sprees with other ppl's GCs.

  • Did not check email for a few days and just saw this. Checked email and there was an excel attachment. Unbelievable. Someone will be sacked for this for sure.

    • +1

I think part of the problem is that Woolies slashed 400 jobs

  • Totally missed all this, explains why my two new gift cards were declined yesterday, what a fiasco

  • +1

i would pray those hold woolworths stocks would not be surprised on Monday…

  • Surely it's been 24h since they know about this!
No action so far for those who are left exposed financially and data -wise…

The least they have have acknowledge the stuff upfront and keep those affected still regularly updated..
I feel for those whom waiting to see how they deal with their missing $3000.

  • Apparently we have our egift cards, so Groupon says:

All customers have now been reissued with new eGift cards which are ready to use.

    • where you see this statement from groupon?

I am still waiting my hundred dollars worth of bigw gift cards to be reissued.

      • They told me.

I told them I have not received mine.

        • I did receive the WW GC but still waiting on the BigW one. Prolly going through them one by one to check balances and all that before re-issuing?

        • over the phone?

          definitely not…

now is the groupon problem again.

        • +1

I told them to stop telling lies, or show me the proof.

        • @whodidthat: How did you speak to groupon over the phone? When I try to call there is a message saying there business hours are Monday to Friday blah blah

        • @aussie28: Not by 'phone, e-mails.

        • @whodidthat:

oh, you are lucky, i sent email to them last night but still not getting any response

        • +2

@jjj123: I am persistent and determined.

Might help that I told them I reported the issue to Fair Trading and Current Affair. LOL

        • +1

          Now they've changed to:

Woolworths have assured us the Big W eGift cards will be reissued today. If you do not receive your eGift card today or have further questions, please don't hesitate to contact Woolworths on 1300 767 969 or via the 'Contact us' section of the Everyday Gift Cards website

  • +2

Groupon KB Artcle posted a deceitful/wrong info again, they are really really dodgy

    Woolworths Limited (HQ) 006C000000z5sHjIAI
Groupon Australia is aware of a technical problem which occurred in regards to the send of Big W eGift cards on Friday 29 May.

These cards have now been de-activated and will not be redeemable in a Big W store. New cards have been sent out on 30 May evening by Woolworths replacing the old ones.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and can assure you that we are working with the Big W eGift card team to avoid any further issues with these cards.

Should you require any further information from Groupon please submit a ticket.

Everyone raise a ticket at the link below, also good to raise a Paypal dispute with same text-details

    http://contact.groupon.com.au/

I raised 3 tickets for my 3 vouchers (as each of them were captured as seperate Groupon order with seperate Security Code)

As per the KB Artcle Woolworths Limited (HQ) 006C000000z5sHjIAI New cards have been sent out on 30 May evening by Woolworths replacing the old ones.

This has not been done yet, now its 31st 2PM and 30 May evening has passed long time back. The old cards are cancelled and new ones not sent. I had to buy my items as part of BigW sale happening this weekend (30th -31st) and if I dont get it before store closing in next couple of hours, I don't think I need them anymore.

Putting baseless unverified information that new cards have been sent out on 30th evening when no-one has received new cards yet is totally unprofessional and unacceptable. What if I get the new reissued eGift cards tomorrow and you will say now issue is resolved, no its not my Full Name and Email ID has been compromised and privacy breached and also original voucher delivery timeline(2-4 Business Days) has been breached.

All T&Cs of this deal have been broken by Groupon and wrong information is put in Woolworths Limited (HQ) 006C000000z5sHjIAI KB Article that New cards have been sent out on 30 May evening by Woolworths replacing the old ones which is false and disgraceful. I will have email proof of when the cards are being received.

    • try to call the woolworths customer service 13 number and direct to speak to their supervisor
i did that to give them pressure, because i also need to go to bigw to have the 10% off deal by end of business day today
