Hi tight-ass, I'm a journo with the Sydney Morning Herald. Someone tipped me off about this thread and this debacle. Pretty keen to chat with you, or anyone else on here who's been affected.

I'm not especially savvy with online threads, so am not sure if you'll get a notification about this. I'm working til 10pm tonight. Feel free to give my landline a buzz - (02)9282 1825.

Hopefully Groupon will get a lot of bad press in relation to this. There business practices are shockingly terrible.

        • I will agree with you, Groupon's attitude and so called customer service has been atrocious.

      • Hey Lisa, I think your PM facility is still not active. People can PM you all details and probably it will easier for you that way.

Just want to highlight here is don't make Woolies the scape goat here, we all Ozbargainers know how bad is Groupon is and usually with all of their deals, something or the other thing goes wrong. They have real dodgy practices and never follow any consumer guidelines and hid doing business from overseas and people get charged International Transaction fees while buying from Groupon.com.au

I don't care much about the Gift Card not working but leaking my Full Name and email ID is a major privacy breach and also along with Gift Card recipient Name and any message ! It will be good if you can talk to the Woolworths Money/Everyday Gift Cards team tomorrow and see how they are going to address the leak of Full Name and email ID and other details. Re-issuing gift cards is not going to resolve this and Groupon was the actual merchant/seller here and they should take full responsibility and issue full refund to everyone and compensate all buyers for the leak. For Woolies , even they did the goof up here, but they were not the actual seller/merchant, Groupon was the merchant. Its a big big story and considering how big Woolies its, its better to nightlight the shady practices of Groupon and really make them pay for this. I have lost so many Groupon vouchers because of their dodgy practices and refund policy.

Happy to share more details with you if you need. Drop me a PM if you want.

It was woolies who stuffed up here, not groupon.

  • I cant even check the balance for my account. Should I be worried?

    • All those cards are not belong to anyone……they were mistaken email to you….so we should waiting for Woolworths Money team escalation.

    • Out of the 11 gift cards I purchased, I couldn't look up 3. Perhaps they're going through cancelling them all now

      • I've got 5 and cant look up any of them. Im hoping they got cancelled before anyone could use them

      • i ordered one and can't even use it now

    • I bought 3, one has been cancelled (so far)

  • get media involved… poor woolis

  • I've just gone through a couple of the gift cards at the top of the excel spreadsheet and whoever one of the scumbags are that's going on a shopping spree is spending up big at Woolworths in Parramatta

    • Should ring Parramatta store to stop ppl buying giftcards temporarily.

      • -3

Umm…and what's that going to do?

  • someone's a$$ is gonna catch fire …
But probably is a quick fix from their side to just cancel ALL the egift card….but prob have to suck up all the STOLEN credit.

Stupid mistake from wollies. Hopefully some solution soon. Mine balance couldn't be checked ….so I am guessing they all got cancelled.

  • +2

Just want to report back that I received my $200 Caltex fuel voucher via email this morning. I used the 15% off code.

  • Mine are still active and untouched at the moment. My name is in the list. Don't think they have much choice tho but to cancel them all.

  • My $200 e-gift card purchased on Saturday the 23rd at 12:20pm arrived in my inbox today Saturday the 30th at 9am… so approx 7 days after purchase

PS checked online and it's still showing $200 available, better go and convert it to a "real" gift card asap after reading some of the previous comments :(

Mine has been spent by someone… What's the phone number to call?

    • Hi Amelyn, I'm a journo with the Sydney Morning Herald. Someone tipped me off about this thread and this debacle. Pretty keen to chat with you, or anyone else on here who's been affected, particularly if you've had your cards spent by someone else.

        • Sorry, quite the novice at forums like these. Have now activated my PM.

          Thanks for this! Super helpful!

      • Sorry, not really convenient to speak on the phone. Happy to answer basic questions if you like. Send me a pm, if so.

        I've got screenshots too. :)

  • Responded on FB, said they are investigating it. Pretty standard response, they are well aware of the issue now though.

  • Just checked again my balance online - it was showing the full $200 less than an hour ago but now I get this error message…

    ERROR
You have failed to log in to the Card transaction summary page.
Please check your 19 digit Card and PIN Numbers and try again.

It looks like they already cancelled my card! Anyone else showing the same message?
The site I used to check the card balance is https://manage.everydaygiftcards.com.au/login.aspx

  • +2

Both of my cards now cancelled. Can't login to see the balance online. This is a nightmare

    • Same with my two cards. its probably the best outcome right now as at least no-one else can spend your card

    • Surely they will issue it again, better than nothing to be done.

  • Those who raced out and converted theirs to plastic gift cards are looking sweet…..dare say these will be issued again to them!

    • You have given me epic FOMO now

  • I just came back from the store used my gift card to buy 5 Optus $19 ZTE phones then bought some other things went to front register and the cards all came back as invalid. Very embarrassing lol.

  • Well, I did some purchase at Big W earlier this arvo (around 1pm ish ACST) and it works fine. Balance remaining after deducting my purchase matched up the $200 I bought. Though I can't login to check my balance at the moment. Guess I'll just hold onto my receipt as a proof incase Woolies try to be funny.

Only received PDF gift cards but cant check online ballance.

I think I'm getting the same message, even though I know it was previously spent by someone… This is annoying.

    OMG

It's gonna be interesting.I presume that 10% of these e-gift cards are already been used.LOL

  • my one canceled as well

  • +1

I will say good bye to e gift card…… no next time

  • +1

got this morning 8.30 am, went to big w this afternoon and found my card is not active yet. BS. wasting time for the sake 2.5%

  • Mine have been cancelled!!!

ie. Just went to use them and they are invalid !

Just confirmed by phone with everyday rewards CANCELLED !

    • +2

      That's better than used, buddy.

      • True ;-{

  • +2

In the meantime, Groupon is sitting pretty with all that dosh.

I asked them what they intend doing about all this as I shopped at BigW this week & missing out on the weekend sale (for using the cards).
    They did not reply.

  • +1

Sorry, no offence to OP but this is one big negative deal

  • I was put through to my local big w manager after calling Woolworths Head office and was informed just to come in and they will honour the deal once I receive the new gift cards be it Monday or Tuesday. I was also giving a $20 gift card for my troubles.

    • What number did you call? Pm me please?

      • Just the number that comes up when putting woolworths into google 1300 767 969

        • +1

I think the call centre is inundated with Ozbargainers (incl. myself) to query wtf happened to our egift card. Tried calling in to verify my card and it said it was cancelled. Anyway, try again tomorrow or probably visit nearest BigW store to query what's it gonna be for the rest of us honest customers!

        • I tried to call about 20 minutes ago, they said closed but if emergency blah bla blah…….so I clicked for that. It transferred then silent, then cut off.

        • @cloudie9: I went to the nearest big w store today. the manager said he could do nothing with it. gift card department is separate blah blah blah..he neither could report this issue to woolworths..it is in top ryde city shopping centre.

    • +4

Minimum that Woolworths could do is to reissue new e-gift cards with $120 / $220 credit for all ;)

  • +6

A short, to the point email to those affected explaining what is happening would have been logical and good customer relations!
    Not everyone frequents forum sites….

    • Exactly, and we get…………nothing.

  • -1

Guys raise Paypal dispute, woolies/Groupon need to pay up for this. $300K is pocket change for them.
Everyone please rase Paypal dispute asap, 1000s of Paypal dispute will lead them to suspend Groupon's account and most of us should get the refund.

    • +1

I would probably hold on for now and wait for a resolution from Woolies, if all else fail, move to Groupon, if that fails too, then raise Paypal dispute. Hopefully will be a good outcome. Besides, its weekend and there is nothing much we can do but to wait for Monday, the least.

      • -1

Gift cards sent dont work, so its a straight dispute Items Not as Described. Also re-issuing eGift cards and again waiting for another 7 days, sorry someone has to swallow the hard pill here, Woolies or Groupon.

        • +3

FFS give Woolies a chance to rectify what clearly was a case of 'human error'…I'm sure each and everyone of us aren't immune to making mistakes in the workplace! I feel sorry for the poor soul who was responsible for this one!

Also to make a PayPal dispute you must first try to communicate with the other party…jumping in all gung ho isn't the answer!

        • You open a dispute to communicate with the merchant and give them a chance to reply. Its only when you escalate to Paypal for a review is when you are putting it to PP to decide. Fixing is not Woolies sending /re-issuing eGift cards and sending it in next 2-3 days, thats 10 days of delay. I had to pay >$200 worth my credit card as all the cards were cancelled and the BigW staff said all these are stolen cards and embarrassed me infront of so many people. I came back here to check what happened and I see this

        • @adele58: Woolies have had best part of today to put a short e-mail together to shoot an apology off to everyone.

        • @regenade: I can feel for ya but, like I said, give it a little more time, Monday at least, and besides, you still have enough time to claim/raise dispute (180 days to raise a dispute as per https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/mpp/paypal-buyer-protectio…)

      • Could open a dispute - but not escalate it. That would tie the money up.

        • IF all the people open 1000s of dispute, that would lead to automatically suspend Groupon's account and all their funds for all deals with be blocked.

        • @regenade: Good!

        • @whodidthat: I am just asking everyone to raise a dispute in Paypal to Groupon. We all know how shady Groupon has been in past deals and this is the only chance we have with us to give them the other end of the stick.

Woolies, of course it was a honest mistake and I am sure they will fix it asap and make amends to all affected customers. They are NOT a dodgy business like Groupon, we all know that :D

        • @regenade: I know what you meant, I was just saying good to tie Groupon in knots. Their attitude has been bad towards all this.

  • both of my cards are not working and can't check balance online. It was Ok this morning.

our personal information including your name, email address probably house address are leaked - so bad.

What about the credit card details? I hope groupon is doing the right thing to protect our information this time.

    • In the spreadsheet I received the only information contained in it is:

      Card Name
      Card Value
      Recipient Name
      Recipient Email
      Sender Name
Message - Thanks for purchasing a eGift Card on Groupon. Your life just became a bit more awesome!
      E Gift Card Link

So as for your personal details being leaked, I've only got a name and email address

      • Is that first name only or surname too?

        • +1

first name only, however lots of people have an email address where they have firstname.surname or similar

  • +1

And very embarrassing when the staff says my both card are stolen cards in front of everyone. FFFFFF

  • I'm glad I read this! Tried to use my gift cards and was a mess.

Neg this deal not for the OP but so if anyone searches Groupon or Big W they can be forewarned about this and save them a headache.

Im not sure about opening a PayPal dispute, Groupon technically got the vouchers out for me personally a day after the timeframe stated and it looks to be a Woolies and Groupon combined effort to screw everyone.

I dunno. Right now BIG W have taken my details and will honour the 10% sale even if it takes a week to resolve. They also offered to pay my petrol costs to come back (I'm about an hour away from my "local")

Sometimes your wasted time isn't worth Saving 17.5%

Good luck to everyone with theirs. Keep us updated

  • Groupon Australia is aware of a technical problem which occurred in regards to the send of Big W eGift cards on Friday 29 May. These cards have now been de-activated and will not be redeemable in a Big W store.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and can assure you that we are working with the Big W eGift card team throughout the weekend to resolve this issue.

The Big W eGift Card Team will be in contact with you as soon as they have a resolution. Rest assured that you will be able to enjoy your eGift card soon!

Please remember this is a no-reply email address, if you require any further information from Groupon please contact us via contact.groupon.com.au

    Thank you for your patience.

    Customer Service Team
    GROUPON AUSTRALIA

    • Yup. Just received this email too.

      • +4

Received email to, but please remember re-issuing Gift card is not the resolution, all your info was leaked and no-one received the eGift cards as per the advertised timelines of the deal and might have to wait for another week probably till they investigate and resolve this. So a full refund + compensation/voucher for the privacy leak is the bare minimum as per Fair Trading/Privacy laws.

Guys just to re-iterate my views and probably the message goes to the SMH team here:

Just want to highlight here is don't make just Woolies the scape goat here, we all Ozbargainers know how bad is Groupon is and usually with all of their deals, something or the other thing goes wrong.

    • I got the same email too, hopefully they resolve this ASAP!

      • Please go ahead and raise a Paypal dispute as Groupon was the merchant. At least it makes sure that no way anyone can be affected even if an honest buyer part-spent your own eGift card today.

        • I have raised a ticket with groupon, and I do whole heartily agreed with your post above as now I'm more worried about my personal information being leaked to some unknown unscrupulous people. I might have to raise a dispute later tonight.

        • +1

Yes leaking Full Name, email to dishonest people (I am sure they are Ozbargainers, shame on them) who actually went on a shopping spree with other people cards.

I will be more happy if Woolies actually one of these guys and hand them over to lawmakers and we can actually name and shame them. I care less about not being able to use the e GCs in Big W 10% off sale today but being told that you are using a stolen card in front of 20-30 people was so embarrassing :(, even if Woolies/Groupon decide to fully refund me the GC amount, I would still never be happy about this. Groupon orders for eGift cards always always have issues, why there has never been a problem with Entertainment Book GCs and they get issued so quickly and with no errors till date.

All I can request everyone here is to teach Groupon a lesson, and the easiest way is to raise a Paypal dispute for their transactions.

    • That template is showing up when submitting a ticket in relation to this deal.

  • Has anyone has their Woolworths Caltex Petrol and or Woolworths Supermarket e gift card been cancelled too? I just notice my woolworths caltex petrol and woolworth supermarket e card has been cancelled when check balance online with message saying:
You have failed to log in to the Card transaction summary page.
Please check your 19 digit Card and PIN Numbers and try again.

    • Yeah. My Woolworths eGift Card was cancelled too.

  • Am I the only one who didn't get any vouchers issued today?

  • Whats the reasonable amount of compensation for this privacy breach and delay of releasing our gift cards?

    • -1

I dont think we should ask for compensations here from Woolies as I feel it was a honest mistake and if they come back to everyone within 24-48 hours with a resolution, but to catch our fellow dis-honest OzBargainers who were going merry using other Gift Card. I am sure they are reading this and some even ordered stuff from Woolworths Online giving out their identity lol, getting caught losing face in public, getting fired from job after being caught , named and shamed will be a really awesome thing if Woolies can do it.

The only winners here are people, who converted all of their own eGift cards to purchases or plastic WISH Gift cards. I am sure all of you are going to be re-issused with fresh eGift cards :D, so enjoy the stuff. Unfortunately I never checked this thread and found out the issue while trying to redeem in today BigW sale :(

      • I get what you're saying but it was Woolworths who made the mistake. Yes, Groupon are partially to blame for this c*** up but….

I've not received anything from Groupon such as above.

      • Spreadsheet was published online for a period of time so was available to anyone during that time. Who knows how many people accessed to it!

  • +1

Not happy Woolworths!! Should't I be informed that my e card was cancelled? A quick email will be appreciated.

    • Yes they should have sent notification too. But probably didn't have the right staff on hand to handle the situation on a weekend.

      • Lol and for a $1.5 Million eGift Card and 1000 of customers privacy breach I am sure they can even call and get a GM and CEO to come and work in the weekend lol :D

        • I'm sure the CEO would be there by now.

    • received an email from woolworths just now on the gift cards being cancelled.

      • Got an email now, they are just going to re-issue new eGift cards. Nothing about the data leak and what about people who have already used their own cards, just a fire-fighting email. Sorry for these Woolworths Money guys, but I am sure it will be cheaper for them to keep all of the honest eGift card buyers staisfied and happy rather than fight the privacy breach. Hopefully they will do the right thing.

Woolworths takes the concerns of its customers and data security seriously.

We experienced a technical fault with an eGift Card sent to customers earlier today. We are working to resolve the issue and are assisting customers

Your previously issued eGift Card /s are now invalid.

We are now in the process of re issuing new eGift Cards which you should receive over the coming hours.

We do apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused, if you have any questions or concerns, please use the 'Contact us' section of the Everyday Gift Cards website.

        Kind Regards,

        • Got no email so far, maybe I should raise a dispute with paypal to "escalate" resolution?! But still, my privacy is my main concern with all this debacles!

  • please let us know when the SMH article comes up

  • Woolies has now sent an email.

  • Hi guys, I'm a journo with the Sydney Morning Herald. I'm keen to chat with anyone in the next hour or so (sooner is better!) who has discovered that their vouchers had already been spent by someone else.

A story will be up online at the Herald website - smh.com.au - pretty soon, replete with a comment from Woolworths.

    Give me a buzz - (02)9282 1825
