Found this thanks to tchai @ reddit. Comments suggest this code can simply be applied directly into the Uber app. I did this but it came only to $10.

Hey I can't be 100% sure but I take uber regularly, whenever u do a fare estimate it tells u the approximate amount. So I assume it's between 10 to 20. Eg. From city to my place is around 15 bucks
i went into the uber app and added it to the promo section. it just came up "discount to your next ride"…. didn't specify anything else.

when i entered the UBERDINING code, its gave me this promotions "Up to $20 off your first ride, UberDINING" but it didnt apply at all
Just a mistake on the system probably.

My last ride didnt apply the promo code I had on my account. I logged on online, requested a fare review of the ride, and in the feedback box explained that I had a promo code that wasnt applied. Within an hour I had that fare refunded. It sometimes happens but they're quick to fix it after you let them know about it.

I didnt download the app, just enter the code on my iphone, get message code ok, and took an uber trip today 11am, get discount $10
Confirmed that you don't have to install foursquare in order to use the promotion code.
But - I used a friend's new referal link to register a new account, and my credit balance is zero - I guess it should be $25. Maybe it's because my friend never used his uber for years - he has a kind of phobie that he must be within 200m of his car to stay sane, so he never could use uber.
Does anyone know if the trip cost $40 and you have a $25 free ride and $30 credit balance, do they deduct the remaining $15 from your credit balance or charge it to your credit card?
$15 from your credit balance. If you only have $5 credit balance, then $5 to your credit balance and $10 to your credit card
