  • Still its only $20.

I am still wondering how all this data is suppose to help us.

Enrol in this course — https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/196322

Neg voters keep asserting that it is a waste of government/taxpayers/your money, and that it simply teaches you how to use a Fitbit in a gym. Mind you, these assertions were made without a shred of evidence to support them. In fact the course is HECS exempt and it teaches you (in one module amongst five) how these data can help guide you to a healthier lifestyle.

It's like you're getting kick backs with the cross promotion to your post.

Tell me what choice do I have? What blahman wants to know is covered in the free course, and to condense what was covered in a two-week module to a single comment is a disservice to all.

        • @alvian: my answer would simply be - a fitness tracker helps you reach your goals and motivates you to get active. I hope people aren't expected to do 2 week courses just to decide if they should be active or not.

@Slo20: You have failed to answer blahman's question: how are the data supposed to help? Your answer reads "the collected data (from a fitness tracker) help you reach your goals and motivate you to get active", which is not at all useful.

Also, your answer would result in a Fail grade in the course because scientific trials are beginning to show contrary results.

Are fitness trackers effective, or they are just the latest fad? How do you make sense of the collected data? What are the limits of technology? Is self-motivation sufficient to effect and maintain a change in lifestyle? What constitutes an active lifestyle and how do you measure it? What are the barriers to change and how can you overcome them? What research are there to answer these questions?

Millions of obese people "decide" to slim down everyday and they don't need to study courses to help them decide. Similarly, to "decide" to be active is easy but to keep at it is hard. Early research show, like fad diets, the novelty of trackers wear off within weeks and people revert back to their old lifestyle. If fitness trackers on their own are ineffective, how do you supplement them?

I have one of this, you need internet to sync to phone, it does have issue with syncing from time to time, for $20, it is okay buy. Pay $99 last year from Dick.

FYI this is the original, which requires a fully working combined microphone headphone socket on your android/iPhone to sync

    Jawbone UP vs Miband?

    • No competition. MiBand.

  • A warning about the Jawbone UP from Koolfang in previous deal.

Just a word of warning on these: the QA on them was pretty terrible. very widespread reports of poor battery life, sync issues etc. some people had issues on up to 5 consecutive replacements, the failure rate seems massive. bought one for $65 a couple of months back and after a week or so the battery wouldn't last 8 hours with all features turned off.

As far as i know jawbone have improved things for subsequent models, but caveat emptor on these ones.

  • I received a Jawbone UP as a gift and could never get it to pair with any device other than an iPhone.

    • Did u try the steps of a soft and hard reset? I believe that was a resolution for pairing issues.

      • Tried both over a dozen times - tried it every time the app was updated as well - no luck. In the end, gave up and returned it.

The maximum volume of the phone is required.
