Looks to be a relatively good price against RRP ($450 RRP from what I can find), but this model doesn't seem to be sold on the Harvey Norman, Appliances Online, Good Guys websites, so hard to find some comparable prices.

    • agreed - Miele have a good name though

      • +1

        Correct.

And it's rare to see discounts on Miele as well.

And it's hard to negotiate with retailers on Miele prices.

  • How does it compare to this one at HN http://www.harveynorman.com.au/miele-s5212-vacuum-cleaner-re…?

Spend $2 more an can get possible $50 Amex credit

The S5381 is a higher up model. Foot switches to change the power levels. I have this model and it sucks…really well.

Either way you can't really go wrong with Miele.

This may have been the case a while ago but I think things have changed in recent years. We bought an absolute TOTL fully integrated XXL Miele Dishwasher for our new house build. 100% German made with all the bells & whistles (& the associated high price tag). It lasted just over 2 years then the logic board died. As it was out of warranty I decided to troubleshoot it myself and was pretty shocked when I discovered condensation had been building up and dripping down into one of the plugs across the bottom of the main PCB causing corrosion etc. Extremely disappointed I contacted Miele who eventually fixed it for free and supplied an extra 12 months warranty so for that I'm very grateful BUT I don't think we'll be buying Miele ever again :( Just too risky!

        • +1

Well I dunno … I wouldn't be that grateful about it, I think it's more than reasonable to expect higher priced appliances to last much longer so for them to fix it that's just expected and "reasonable".

But it's also a little extreme to avoid the brand entirely based off 1 incident as well if you don't mind me saying so ;)

Nothing has changed in recent years. Miele still has the same design life of 20+ years and you can't claim this has changed because of the experience with one product failure that Miele covered. Miele consistently are on top of reliability surveys by choice magazine and our experience with Miele products is the same with a dishwasher that is now over 20 years old and that still works as good today as it did 20 years ago.

        • @Diji1: Fair enough. I suppose I'm just basing the experience on the absolute bullet-proof performance of my ASKO appliances. All TOTL back in the day and cost a fortune (the same as the equivalent Miele products at the time) BUT now 15 years old and still working as well as the day we bought them! 15 friggin' years of non-stop perfection and not showing any signs of failing, just amazing. The only reason we decided to go with Miele for the Dishwasher was because ASKO have now gone to China and we heard their quality has dropped in the process. We assumed the German built Mieles would be as good as the old ASKO stuff but it seems not. Then again, I installed a $500 LG Dishwasher into a Holiday Home and it's fantastic! Win some, lose some.

        • @Maverick-au: Well I suppose so but two failures of commercial grade Miele Dishwashers here at work plus the death of ours really hasn't helped.

Fair enough but if you look at the failure rates of other dishwashers it can be double to quadruple the Miele failure rate in the first years and you won't generally find other brands that are older than 5-10 years still in use.

        • +1

@Maverick-au: Ha, yeah. That reminds me of my first Dishwasher, a Fisher & Paykel DW920 (from memory). Oh boy, what a joy it was to own (not)! Replaced the logic board in that POS myself three times at a cost of about $175 a go for a reco. Easy enough to do but I didn't want to do it a fourth time as I was already pushing close to the original purchase price just in repair costs… and that was all DIY too! Ended up selling it to some guy for $200 wanting to 'fill a hole' in a house he was selling even after warning him how crappy it was but of course he didn't care ;) I'd say it'd be smashed up in a landfill site somewhere now, leaching all those lovely chemicals into a nearby waterway. Ahhh, progress eh!

      • I have this vacuum in a higher spec, with the wireless power control. Can't say I've been overly happy with it as I've had to had the wireless module replaced twice in the last 2 years.

As someone has already mentioned original bags are a complete rip off. I have recently switched to OEM bags off e-bay and they seem to work as well as the originals.

        • As someone has already mentioned original bags are a complete rip off. I have recently switched to OEM bags off e-bay and they seem to work as well as the originals.

You do realise that OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer and that for those bags to be OEM as you claim they would have to be manufactured by Miele (or if they outsourced the manufacture of the bags by that company) and as these bags are neither you can't call them an OEM bag.

You're buying bags from a company that makes bags that fit the Miele.

        • Yes, thanks for pointing that out. Lazy reference on my behalf. To clarify, the bags I buy are cheap non-OEM replacement fake bags for the Miele vacuum, purchased from eBay and I assume made in China.

Let me know if you want a link!

        • @apey75: hi mate, please provide the link. time to buy a new set for my Vac. Thanks a lot…..

        • @sab2000: I bought these…

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/15-QUALITY-SYNTHETIC-VACUUM-CLEAN…

          I think I paid $25 shipped for 15 bags.

They are by a company called Menalux (http://menalux.com/)

I doubt they provide the same amount of filtration as the original bags and I can't vouch for what they may do to the vacuum cleaner in the long term. However I've been using them for 6-8 months without problems. My partner is very sensitive to allergens (the reason I bought the Miele originally) but she also can't tell the difference.

    • S5212 at HN is made in China.

Switched from a Dyson to a (German) Miele. Greatly prefer the Miele.

    • Can you say why? I am considering replacing my Miele S4281 with a dyson, which I have never tried. It's not bad, just meh. I bought it 5 years ago and it still runs fine, but the suction was never great. It was better than my previous cheapo vacs, but nothing to write home about. Maybe I'm expecting too much?

      • +1

The biggest plus would be that you have bags. It means extra filtration of the air and when it is time to empty, you throw away the bag (obviously). With bag less you breath in all those fine particles that you wanted to remove from you house when emptying

      • The Miele is much quieter, seems to have better suction (although really it's much of a muchness) and IMO not having a bag is overrated, it's just easier to dispose of a bag. I think that the Miele is more solidly built than the Dyson, but that's just my impression.

  • any promo codes?

  • +3

got me a Miele at home and works amazing. It sucks more than apple products do!

  • What are the chances.. just a day after my old Dyson died on me! Thanks OP

  • Would have bitten this one if I didn't buy the Dyson DC54 Animal 6 months ago. I struggled to choose between the two (Dyson vs Miele) and ended up impulse buying the Dyson when a good deal came up. I would have definitely picked Miele if it wasn't for having to purchase the bags.

Edit: Forgot to add that I'm happy with the Dyson I have but can't really say if it's better than the Miele as I've never used the Miele ones before.

  • I have had both a Miele and a Dyson. The Miele was a hunk of junk compared to the Dyson. Would never ever again buy Miele for vacuums ever again. Broke just after 18 months. I have 2 Dysons, one of them over 3 years old and still going strong.

  • I just bought the Mieles 5212 from Harvey Norman at $279.95 including delivery.
It is basically the same as the 5381 vacuum cleaner with identical motor, bag capacity etc.

    Godfreys selling for $599.

    Harvey Norman clearance for $298.

Less $25 online voucher reduces to $273.

Plus shipping (to Sydney) of $6.95 brings it up to $279.95

S5 series is being phased out in favour of the S8 series, hence the discounts.

    I have a S5211, S5981, S8970, definitely love the models with the power/turbo brush.

Tip for those who are purchasing it, the vac bags can be purchased as a carton of 4 boxes for $80, rather than $25 each. Don't try reusing the bags, and don't use fakes, the technology is all in the bag itself

    • Can you elaborate on all the technology being in the bag itself? not the vacuum

      • +1

Each bag has 7 layers of filtration, so a typical Dyson will filter ~70% of the dust with its cyclonic system, whereas the Miele bags will get around 99.9%. This is why at present, Miele doesn't offer bagless vacuums.

If you're near a Good Guys or Harvey Norman store, just crack open the canister and take a look inside the bag, you should be able to see all the various filters inside it.

        • That's explain why there is not a single dust particle inside of my vacuum cleaner when changing the bag.

        • @boomramada: Agreed, when I used the original Miele bags the chamber that holds the bag was always relatively dust free. Now that I am using 3pp bags (non-OEM / fake / China / etc) I get some dust build-up in that compartment.

Whether that justifies the price difference is a subjective matter. The vacuum discussed in this post is the same price as 12 original Miele bags (assuming you get them in cartons of 4).

I find it's a bit like owning a printer. Do you pay the price for original overpriced ink cartridges, or just go for fakes and bear the risk of having to replace the whole printer prematurely. To each their own.

Be informed and enjoy your vacuum whatever you decide to do / use.

        • +1

Do you have any references to Dyson filtering only ~ 70% of the dust? Not trying to knock the Dyson in any way - I am not at all impressed by my current vacuum and my wife is bent on the Dyson (totally uninformed - they just look cool and have oh so strong marketing) so I am just trying to gather the facts before I shell out the hard earned $$$.

          Thanks.

        • @apey75: I paid $20 for original bags for my s2111 and since we change them once a year works out to $5 a year and even then they aren't full.

To us it beats having to empty out the bagless vaccum we had earlier and get dust everywhere and a necessary jump in the shower afterwards.

        • @apey75: I asked the technicians as to why Miele don't make a bagless vacuum, as they seem to be all the rage, and these are the stats they told me, so take them as you wish. The dyson has washable filters, whereas the Miele's filter is the bag itself, so you're technically renewing the filter every time you change the bag, rather than washing a filter that really doesn't catch much. If your wife isn't convinced, take her to Harvey Norman or the Good Guys, most of the time you can plug in the demo vacuums and give them a try. • @sidewaysandsmoking: tried ordering before this deal came out on OZB - called and spoke to a rep who advised me that there's sufficient stock and to order next week when I'm back at home on the desktop (mobile wasnt working)…. your now out of stock :(
is there any chance you can assist?

        • @JohnnieB: Should have ordered there and then, they can take orders over the phone with a credit card very easily, and should still provide free delivery. Usually they set aside only a certain amount for online sales, so you may still be in luck, otherwise it's sold out.

        • @sidewaysandsmoking: Thanks captain obvious

        • @JohnnieB: Sorry mate, once they're gone, they're gone. I doubt the rep you talked to realised the sale was on OZB, as Miele typically don't advertise these kind of sales.

  • does this model have a power head option ?

    • No, powerhead is only compatible with the S598x models. The top end S8xxx models have a 'turbo brush', which is powered by the suction of the vacuum

  • Just a thought for those in the market for a vacuum, we absolutely love our cordless vacuum. If you suspect they're overpriced, let me just say that we have not dragged our corded vacuum out since we bought our cordless over 6 months ago. Admittedly we have all floorboards, but for everyday convenience (think breadcrumbs in the kitchen!), you take the thing off the wall mounted charger and off you go! We have a cordless Dyson, but I'm not here to promote Dyson, just the convenience of cordless.
