  • How reliable are these? Seems to be using a Norelsys NS1066 SATA to USB 3.0 bridge controller. Not very familiar with this brand…

    • the other model has a good review in amazon http://www.amazon.com/ORICO-2588US3-External-Drive-Enclosure…

not really sure what is the differences between them.

      I have two of these.
Build quality is good, but the design is not perfect. It opens up by sliding, but because there is no screw to mount the HDD to the enclosure, it may actually loosen up from the SATA slot during transport. They provide sticky tape with padding, but it doesn't help (if anything, it makes it hard to open when you need to replug the loose HDD inside). You need folded piece of paper/toothpick/etc. to tighten up the space so that the HDD would stay plugged.
The USB connector protrudes everywhere, gets knocked and whatnot and after a while the enclosure's USB port becomes loose.

One thing that may be very annoying is that on some machines, this enclosure doesn't play well with Ubuntu (haven't tried other distros yet). It causes kernel panic when plugged (tried it with 14.04, 14.10). This is fixed in 15.04, but there's still that USB3.0 power management problem where it takes forever to wake up.

i have one, worth the extra $ over a no-name.

  • Can anyone confirm if this supports UASP? http://www.usb.org/press/presskit/PR-Norelsys_USB_Computex20… shows that NS1066X supports UASP, but no mention of the NS1066 supporting it.

  • Allbuy price coming up as $8.82 for me and the $8% cashback will still put it over $8, so i might buy one from Mushtato. Didn't know this thing exists, otherwise wouldn't have spent money on the cable by itself LOL

  • Any ideas on the difference between models 2588 and 2599?

Also any good prices on the coloured ones? These above are all black.

  • From the recommended AliExpress listing:-

Kindly reminder:This product needs to connect with external power when hard drive's capacity exceeds 200GB

  • I have one of these and use it when traveling - great product

  • so will this fit in there https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/198395 ??

    thanks :)

    • It's should work, but why do you need ssd as an external hard drive? It's cheaper to buy normal hdd.

      • sweet thankyou!!

No i want to 'clone' the current hard drive to the SSD so i don't have to start from scratch the computer from scratch. There are no slots available in the laptop.

I'm assuming this will work - i'm not very good at this sort of stuff but i read a bit and i think i can do it this way… feel free to correct me if i'm wrong though!

yes this should work for what you want. if its one time use you can buy sata to USB cable. its around half price of this. the advantage of this case that you can use your old hard drive as an external hard drive to store your files.

its easy to clone and replace the hard drive there is nothing to worry about :)

        • +1

Yeah you can do that. Afterwards you can put the old laptop HDD into this enclosure and use it as an external.

For some reason it only charged my PayPal 9.05 aud for mushtato
