  • Avast or BD? BD is consuming almost 120 MB.

    • Avast definitely takes less memory when idling. I think mine is around 70MB. Give it a try.

      • Thanks.I just uninstalled BD. I was having issue while saving word doc which was taking ages. So uninstalled BD and checking if it was causing the problem.

  • +1

    Awesome. Nice find.

  • +4

    Already received the license file.

  • Which one is better, BD or this ? My IE browser at random time got an error and "Fix The connection" message. Does anyone know if this is caused by BD or something wrong with my internet connection ?

    • +18

IE Browser, that's your problem friend.

C'mon Firefox! Whip out your All-In-One-Sidebar, wield it like a sword, and finish him!

        • -1

          Completely unrealistic.

Firefox should be trying to dress the same as Chrome.

      • Thanks Tom

    • Yeah, it's probably in stealth mode. You need to manually turn it off from probably the privacy settings.

      • I think it is on auto pilot mode. Any difference ?

        • Thats the general mode. Stealth should be in firewall or something.

  • Great deal TA

Even though I'd given up on AVAST due to reasons of bloat, $60 for free is a deal for me.

Perhaps silly question but is it 1 license per computer?

    • +1

      Yes, 1 license per computer.

      • Thanks

        • Time to use those extra gmail accounts then!

        • @ShipShapeRC:

Lol I already did, only got key sent to the second account I used. I guess they're onto that?

        • @Click_It:
I have one I registered the free version with and that wont get a license but other addresses avast dont know give me a license. So I got 4.

        • @ShipShapeRC:

Ahh. Maybe that's it then. Of the 3 I used certainly 1 has been used for free in the past, maybe 2.

Ok I have several email addresses so I'll try again later, wanted 3 in total. Thanks :)

  • Did anyone else get avast automatically installed on their phone/ tablet after installing it your computer?

    • +1

Haven't gotten the email yet but FWIW I actually use AVAST on my phone. It slows down app-installs (scans) and a little bloaty for my liking but overall I find it a decent package and my Note3 is more than capable. It includes "lost phone" security measures too. Can't compare it to anything as it's the only AV I've ever used but I'd imagine there are worse options out there :)

    • Not sure how you managed to do that. lol
During the installation you get asked if you want it on your phone too, but how on earth would the installation access your phone?

      • I have no clue, I'm pretty sure I pressed decline on that screen as well.. I checked my other phone and it installed itself on there too!
The only thing I can come up with is that on my laptop I'm logged into my Google account in chrome, avast must exploit that somehow and install it through my Google play account on my phone..

        • Yes! That's exactly how it's done. Just go into your application manager and uninstall it. You can also remove it from your google play account.
There's no reason to have anti-virus on your phone unless you download unverified 3rd party apps and surf shady websites on your phone.

  • still waiting for the license….

  • Clicked the link, got the email, ran the license, have pro in all of about 2 mins!

    :)

    Ta TA!

  • Sweet, thanks TA! :)

  • Thanks OP. I like Avast.

  • Sweet post, Avast always being the best and I am with them for ages.

  • mine came instantly.

    • +2

      Phrasing…

    • +1

Geez — You probably need more than just protection then — I think there's medication for that.

    • tobias funke, is that you?

  • Great deal. This is one of the best anti virus for windows. But I just don't like anti viruses. They slowdown the start up and windows defender is pretty good at detecting dirty files. I have not used anti virus for last 5 years and still have no signs or symptoms of virus in any of my devices.

    • Windows Defender is still a real time security product though.

  • 1.5 hrs…… still not receiving anything….

    • Try again, I used a hotmail.com and a mail.ru and got both within a few min, i did 30min ago. Check your junk folder too. Mail.ru sent to junk for me, hotmail just normal :)

      • Thanks i got it with different email address….

  • i like norton. ill pass ;)

    • But your computer didn't like Norton … :p

      • i wonder if it will blend.

        • Neg, Only 1 antivirus and seriously blow off nortons, not worth the hassle. Im in IT and its just bloatware and doesn't do as good of a job as some free packages.

        • @aussiedealseeker:
          is there a mac version?

        • +1

          @tuzii: Yes, https://www.avast.com/en-au/free-mac-security

I cannot comment if the year free licence will work on Mac, I guess it would. Hope this helps :)

Thats the free now pro version page btw, I downloaded that a few weeks back, got the attachment in the email from this promo, open it and it automatic upgraded me to pro. I think you can download pro str8 from the offer email but. :)

        • @aussiedealseeker:
nice work, got it for commodore 64?

        • @tuzii: Haha, Im a SNES boy. Was there viruses on Commy 64s haha

        • @aussiedealseeker:
i still have my snes works 100%
Iim gunna give this ago on my mac though
          thanks

        • @tuzii: welcome :) Remember if its not for you, you can just uninstall. Ive tried so many anti-virus programs both paid and free and the "free" version of this seriously works well. 12 months free pro version is a really good bonus :)

        • @tuzii: They are updating the Vic 20 version so it should be out soon.

        • @aussiedealseeker: The PRO and FREE versions are identical on Macs. The PRO is just for businesses to license and use.

        • @aussiedealseeker: what would you recommend instead? ETA obviously the price is right for Avast…

      • Haha

      • +1

Maybe back in 2006 your comment made sense :p Not a fan of Norton but the performance is quite good (in independent benchmarks).

Last time I used avast was on my housemates computer - had to turn off the shields as it was preventing me from cleaning up the infection on her laptop.

Not really a fan of AVs in general as there are much more effective ways to prevent infection — while using a fraction of the resources.

        • Norton's scan performance, effectiveness and false positives are certainly improved since then. However, it is still a more resource hungry suite than many alternatives such as Avast. It also causes our corporate IT department a lot of issues with networking. It simply not worth the cost, paying for an inferior product even compared to many free options.

        • +1

@krzystoff: Performance is about resource usage and overall effect on the system. Norton has consistently been a top performer in AVC tests for at least the last ~7 or so years. I can't comment on networking.

The days of Norton being a resource hog are long behind us, but the jokes from that time are still with us ;)

  • +3

I've been using Avast for a decade, my fav antivirus. The free version hasn't let me down all this time, but now that I have the Pro version I feel like I can do some extra dodgy stuff err lol.

  • +1

Avast vs the built in Windows one? I think it's called Windows defender? Supposedly the one in Windows 8.1 isn't bad..

    • I use microsoft security essentials. Pretty much the same thing but it's pretty good.

      • Yea that one! I mean maybe I'll just get this one for the sake of it….

      • -1

Just make sure microsoft still support security essentials. I know its no longer offered in new windows versions. Still doesnt hurt to run with avast or avg

      • Security Essentials use to be great but is the worst for detecting new viruses now

        http://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/

    • Use avast along side defender. Defender is quite shit in some areas. Together they work well :)

      • +3

Avast will automatically disable Defender/MSE and you should leave it disabled. They are not designed to work in tandem and the only thing it will do is slow your computer down.

        • Exactly right tantryl. They're effectively using two antivirus programs.

The people who think "more is better" when it comes to real-time protection just slow their systems down unnecessarily - and potentially reduce security due to conflicts with resource access.

  • I gotta say, I go on shit loads of shady websites and have always been loyal to AVG or Sopher (uni anti virus they give us for free) and Avast truly is awesome, Ive gone 2 months on the free version with no viruses, which is odd. I also love how it blocks shitloads of ads and popups

    • When's the last time you had a virus?

  • My security software prevented me from using the Avast site had to give it permission before it could take my details for the promotion.

    • Which security software?

      • Noscript firefox plugin.

        • Well that's what it's meant to do - if you've set to to default deny scripts other than those from sites you've specifically whitelisted.

  • thanks got 3

  • Are they locked to the email you use?

  • Does anybody use 360 Security? How does that compare against the tried and tested others?

    • 360 reports a lot of false positives at present.

  • Thanks mate.

  • Cheers TA

  • Awesome, thanks, have used Avast since 2003.

  • Bitdefender is still number one according to these websites:

    http://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus
    http://chart.av-comparatives.org/awards.php?year=2014

I have used Avast, Avira, Norton, Comodo, AVG and few other. Bitdefender is the best todate. Yes it used a bit more RAM tho not as much as Chrome :)

  • what about AVG ? seems ok and pretty discreet

  • I have also used all of them and avira seems the least clunky but if you are infected only certain things like anti malware will actually save you, i'm talking about mass infection, stuff that none of the anti virus picks up. avast seemed to take up more resources than it was worth honestly

  • thanks heaps!!!

  • +1

I use free Avast and they annoyingly popup on a daily basis to tell me that there is loads wrong with my computer, which they will fix, if I pay up. It will be interesting to find out now what those dire problems are- my money is on not much.

    • You can fix them normally by just turning off scheduled scans.

I'm just using Avast right now. 6 months ago I was using Avast + Norton.. but the Norton license has expired so I uninstalled it.

About 2 years ago, I must have decided Avast was better than AVG can't remember why but yeah so I made the switch.

I guess the only downside with Avast is they want you to reenter your email every 6 months just to continue using their free version.
Ironic how they asked a questionnaire about how people would like to use automated software updates.

      • I don't have scheduled scans.

    • How sure are you that it's from Avast? Sounds more like the usual fakeAV malware people seem to get.

      • They are from Avast all right. If you follow them you go straight to upgrade to paid version.

        • Sounds pretty annoying. If software starts hassling me, then it doesn't stay on my PC for very long ;)

What specifically does it say is wrong?

        • @RJK:

Outdated software- computer running slow- stuff like that.

  • Thanks TA…

  • Thanks just as my AVG free license ran out

  • All good, thanks TA. Got the licence via email straightaway, 2-3 minutes to apply and update.

  • Thanks OP.

  • Anybody received email to gmail address? My @live came through fast but have been waiting 4hrs on gmail, still nothing…

    • +1

      2 to gmail addresses instantly.

      • +1

So weird, went back in and filled the form in exactly the same way with my gmail and it came through instantly.

        • If you already have used that email for the free version it will ignore it. I tried repeatedly with no success so I used ones avast does not know and they all came through quickly.

  • 2 to gmail addresses instantly as well
