        I got a cancellation email :(

        • and Telstra honoured mine. I'm happy!!!

  • which phone is better?

    • +11

      HTC for smoother experience

    • -1

Both are good. Who would you prefer South Korean or Taiwanese manufacturer?

      • -1

definitely will try the phones from Taiwan of China.

        • Taiwan is Taiwan, China is China.

        • -3

          @clse945111:
          you need some education,kid.

        • +15

Oh no, you are the one that needs to get educated. Does the PRC control Taiwan? No. So get your facts right.

        • -1

          @clse945111:
ask ma ying jiu (jeou if you prefer) this question;)

        • +1

          @clse945111:
Republic of China (ROC) constitution still raises claims of sovereignty over Mainland China.

        • @alwayseric: He is more pro-China, but did he ever unite (or "re-unite", if you will) the two? No.

        • +2

@ddhytz: and it also states that the capital is Nanjing, so do you think it still means anything?
My point here is that claiming to have something doesn't mean it's true. Today I claim Ozbargain is owned by me and I created it, is it true? No, it's only a claim, not a fact. Same thing with China claiming to own Taiwan.

        • +1

PRC and ROC are 2 different countries.

        • +8

You are all Chinese! OK, full stop.

        • +1

          @clse945111:

When you "claim" Taiwan is Taiwan, did you take into account that no major country recognise Taiwan as a country on a diplomatic level? I think your claim is just a claim, much weaker one anyway.

        • @ddhytz:
"Republic of China (ROC) constitution still raises claims of sovereignty over Mainland China."
hahah.. what? From the Qing Dynasty? From Chang Kai Shek? too funny.

        • +1

@victorheaven: so are you saying that the countries that do recognise Taiwan (ROC is more correct in this case) as a country are not countries? Those countries are countries too, no matter how small.
And my fact here is that the PRC doesn't control and own Taiwan (ROC does), which is undoubtedly true, as of 2015 anyway, it's not a claim ;)

        • @tlam:
Yup- we all look the same!

        • Interesting article to read(need Google translate).
          http://lanmeihua.blogspot.com.au/2015/04/blog-post_632.html?…

        • Hehe lol good conversation

      • Taiwan largely does not like China, just as Japan is not keen on China. China has a history of taking sides with that North Korean fool.

        • @alwayseric:

I think not. Japan, Taiwan and South Korea have always been free market economies since WW2. China and North Korea followed the path of communism. There are plenty of articles to read about the tension between these countries over a long period and currently. It's clear you're not up to date on/or willing to learn the history.

        • -2

@CheapRichGuy: obviously, kid you should get your fact right. the history and politics in asia is beyond the level you can comprehend.

        • @alwayseric:

Yet you provide nothing of substance to back up your view. Who`s the kid?

Htc for better speakers and smoother interface.

Samsung for better camera and removable battery.

      • +2

also s5's "waterproofing" and fingerprint sensor if used correctly.

        • Yep and that. Reason I didn't include that is because the water proofing isn't reliable and the htc is water splash resistent for whatever that's worth. Everything else is pretty much the same.

      • +1

        Also, HTC for giant bezels.

        Samsung for a band-aid design.

As far as performance these phones are almost identical with the same SoC although the Samsung is clocked at 2.5 vs 2.3. In reality this difference is almost meaningless to the user. They both feature the very capable adreno 330 GPU which has no issues running any current demanding 3D application.

Samsung screens are better for games and general use being AMOLED whereas the HTC LCD screen really shines in displaying lifelike images and video without looking overly saturated (or "eye popping" as some people describe AMOLEDs ..). Both are exceptional screens though and have gon to lengths to make up for their weaknesses (ie. "Super LCD displays better blacks and Samsung includes modes for watching video etc).

Samsung screen is also larger by 0.1" which doesn't sound much but it's significant (noticeably larger).

The HTC pretty much has the best speaker sound output of any phone barring it's younger brother the M9. Samsng's speaker output is like most phones (terrible).

Samsung's version of Android is not liked by all but the good news is the S5 has a ton of third party work done for it so finding a good replacement should be easy.

HTC's version is noted for being well done and is missing the perhaps idiotic level of duplication in Samsung phones where every app has at least 1 other app to do the same thing (typically Samsungs version and google's version) and some apps have as many as 4 (FOUR!) other apps to do the same thing. I'm unsure of the third party ROM situation as far as this HTC device.

      • All popular high-end devices have a good selection of community ROMs

      • +1

It's true they are similar spec. However in terms of real world use the performance of the htc is way smoother thanks to sense. The one m8 is significantly better than my better spec note 4 in general use, which lags and stutters a lot thanks to Touchwiz. As for screens, it's subjective and some people don't like the Samsung oled screens. I personally like Samsung screens more.

The biggest downside to the m8 is the camera, it's better for low light but in good lighting it suffers from real bad overexposure. There's also a manufacturer issue that causes the camera lens to scratch.

As for using a custom rom, that voids your warranty. And not everyone wants to go to the effort of installing roms.

      • A link to the XDA Original Dev - note: original

There seems to be 5.1.1 ROMs in development so that's a good sign. If you're not a big fan of HTC's Android layer like me, flashing a custom ROM to something closer to stock and installing Adaway will make this phone a beast.

      • Also note:

Samsung uses micro-SIM. HTC uses nano-SIM.

        • my nano sim now used to be a normal sim.

I chopped it myself along the way. no issue

    • Htc for the metal build and stereo speakers on front.

Samsung for its camera (much much better), rugged build, removable battery, amoled screen and multi window feature.

    • Why do people care about the speakers on the M8? Surely the headphone sound quality is important.

(After a certain quality level, I no longer care about additional voice call quality. On the other hand, I use my phone for music constantly)

      • +2

If you care about headphone sound quality than the m8 is significantly better than the Samsung too. Also better than other smartphones for that matter. I care about good speakers though, and I don't use my phone for listening to music through headphones.

  • Very nice deal.

  • +3

You need to be on Telstra pre-paid first according to the page. So you'll need to go out and grab a $2 sim, port your number and then redeem the offer online.

  • +1

No, just click on the link then it take to the right place.

  • Can you use this plan to pay for google play apps?

    • Yeah but there's not much point because they will bill you in real money.

  • Whoa wth, i'm moving!

  • +1

Can i just change my current plan with Telstra to this plan?

  • +3

    cashrewards for another $150 saving?

    • +1

can't search for this offer via link directed from CashRewards, anyone can help?

      • No this deal does not qualify for CashRewards. You would need to take up a new mobile on a Mobile Accelerate Plan $150.00 according the website.

        • The cashrewards website says you can use it on a Go Mobile plan.

The problem is you can't access the link through the cashrewards website.

    • -1

      says

'Cashback is only available when you take up a new phone on a 24 month Go Mobile plan and handset repayment. Please note Cashback is available and redeemed from CashRewards not Telstra.'

Not sure this would qualify as it says 24 month plan and this is month to month.

      • This is 24mths. You can't just get the phone and leave after a month with no penalty lol.

The problem is getting the link through cash rewards. And the reliability of the tracking.

    • I opened the cashrewards link to Telstra then pasted over the deal link on the same tab and I just got a email advising my claim is pending which means it recognised the purchase at least.

Here's to hoping it goes through!

      • I did the same thing. Nothing yet here. What time did you do yours?

Also, have you got confirmation from telstra re the deal. I haven't yet. That may be why.

        • Around 2pm?

        • @onebutters: I did mine about 5.30/6pm. What confirmation emails have you got from telstra?

        • @cooleagles: I got the standard auto email from Telstra saying that I've bought within an hour of purchasing on Friday saying it would be delivered between 2-5 business days.

I got an email last night from Cashrewards saying it was pending processing.

I haven't received any further comms since either in the form of a confirmation, query or rejection so I'm assuming it's all on board.

  • +1

Great offer. Since the phones are worth $500+, it's effectively $24 per month for unlimited calls & 2GB data, and both phones support the new 700Mhz LTE band.

    • +1

I just list the phone on eBay and using my iPhone.

  • Bargain!

Now we might see Gumtree/eBay getting flooded with the two phones offered. I think the Samsung fetch a better number.

    • Currently Sgs5 can be had cheaper outright at retailers. But it'll probably sell faster.

  • Great deal!

  • Samsung S5 is on 4GX

    • One M8 is also on 4GX

    • -5

      Hahah 4GX.

  • Really a BARGAIN deal

  • will this be on their 4G network?

  • pretty good deal

  • Are these phones locked to Telstra? We are on a $49 a month plan with 1GB of data and $450 of calls/sms. We are not paying off a phone as we have been on this plan for about 4 years. I was thinking we could sell off the phone for say $450 and then keep the plan and it would prove cheaper and better than what we are on now.

    • +1

Postpaid not locked. Might have Telstra branding in the firmware.

    • FYI both of these phones are generally considered as good as the latest version. HTC had very little improvement, and S6 removed removable battery.

    • +1

      Dude, it's $45/m from Telstra.

    • Define so old

      • -7

my iphone 7 is getting old now. so the samsung s5 definitely belongs to the museum.

        • +8

my iphone 7 samsung s5 is getting old now. so the samsung s5 iphone7 definitely belongs to the museum.

          FTFY

    • +1

Can always sell and buy the phone of your choice.

It works out to be $30 or less per months to run on Telstra, depending on how much you sell the phone for.

Hard to say it's not a deal since other unlimited plans are usually in the $35+ mark…

      • +2

even comparing this to Optus $45 Prepaid, Optus offers 3gb of data WITHOUT a phone…

    • $45 on the telstra network itself its a decent deal if you ask me… i have a personal vaya phone (optus) and work telstra .. if i didnt have work phone id be ditching my vaya for this…

    • I still see iphone 4 (4 year old+) deals here being upvoted for 200 bucks..

  • Just got off online chat, they are telling me that this plan is only for existing telstra prepaid customers. is this correct??? there is no conditions on the webpage stating this.

    • Says it when you click on the link. Just grab a $2 sim, port your number and then redeem the offer online.

    • +2

NOT CORRECT. I ported my number form Amaysim during purchase

      • Good to know.

      • YES - CAN PORT from OTHER mobile to this. Just enter your mobile + customer ID

        great deal - thank OP!

        From Telstra sign up form

Bringing your number from another carrier?

We'll need your customer account number (this is not your mobile number).
If you're on pre-paid, just the mobile number.

    • Not correct. It's not stated on main page.

    • There are three options:
      1. Existing prepaid number
      2. Port from another carrier
      3. Get a new number

      I chose the third option.

  • +4

Soon 99.9% of the ozbargain population will be on Telstra network. Should see deals popping up quicker than ever as we spot them.

  • Good Deal, too bad I just upgraded my contract with virgin, otherwise I would have just on this deal.

    • Virgin is good, but Telstra is a better bang… for the buck :P

  • Im on a grandfathered prepaid plan, Encore Cap. Maybe its time to move on

    • Me too… wondering the same thing.

    • also considering this
