    • Also on the Encore, tempted to switch but I already have an S5 :/

Which one of these would be easier to sell and which would get a higher value?

Have a look on ebay, sort by ending soonest.
Maybe put some on your watch list so you can see what the final prices are.

Samsung would be easier to sell, but due to this deal there's going to be so so many Samsung and HTCs for sale :)

  • Awesome bargain, Telstra! Your move next, Vodafone…

  • This is a 'pre-to-post' promo - a promotion to get pre-paid customers over to post-paid non-contract service. There is no contract however if you cancel within 24 months you'll be hit with the normal handset monthly repayment (which is being credited as part of this promo)

Just get a prepaid SIM, activate then sign up to this deal. You could also port your existing number to Telstra prepaid then migrate to this….

  • Please someone explain this -> How long you'll need to keep paying this $45 per month?

    • 24 months to ensure 'free' handset otherwise handset payment kicks in.

    • edit: too slow

  • holy cow so nice deal..i might actually jump onto Telstra's ship now

  • Do we really need to have a prepaid with Telstra? I'm just testing the waters but I'm halfway through the form without having to say that I've got prepaid with them. (There is the option of bringing your number over from another carrier.)

    • I don't think one should have a prepaid number with Telstra. I just completed my order and moving from Spintel. There is a section where you authorize Telstra to port your number from previous service provider.

This is the best deal I came across in OZ. Thanks heaps OP

  • Is their a cooling if period for this? Is it normally 14 days?

  • is the phone locked?

    • +2

All Telstra post paid phones are unlocked

  • with vodafone atm and contract just expired.

how do I port my number to a $2 prepaid telstra sim?

    • Buy sim, activate sim online with telstra and port your number

      • thanks, never bought a prepaid sim previously.

    • +1

You no need to do it separately. Just continue on the purchase and you will see option to port from other service provider to Telstra.

I just completed my offer while having my number with Spintel. You will be asked to authorize Telstra to port your number.

  • Can you add the Galaxy S tablet deal from previous posts to this offer??

  • +3

YOU CAN PORT FROM ANOTHER PROVIDER DURING PURCHASE.

  • Solid deal. Looks about $30 pm better than my Optis onseller Westnet for the S5.

  • Wooow! Ok to stay with prepaid encore or should I move onto this?

Also which phone has the better camera?

    • Have the same dilemma…:/

s5 has better camera from what I have heard

      • +1

That's what I've heard too. Man, I would defiantly jump in except I'm too used to "buying" apps with telstra credit. I probably spend close to $20 a month in apps and only recharge $30-40 each month for it.

    • and better battery too

  • +2

I'd avoid Samsung, my note4 is a piece of crap… Despite the good camera, it's just overall laggy compared to all my other Android phones, especially opening the gallery would take 10 seconds… Seriously, Samsung?

    • The reviews for the Samsung have been good as they backed of on a lot of the preloaded software.
It ran a close second to the htc M8 when it come out in a few reviews I read at the time

Im happy with my S5 but haven't used the note.

      http://www.t3.com/reviews/samsung-galaxy-s5-review

      • +3

Samsung phones lag more and more over time, for some reason.(maybe badly optimised) Honestly I doubt "bloat" really slows the phone down, look at Asus phones - more bloat than Samsung, still smoother.
Used HTC for a year, no lag
Used Sony for 6 months, no lag
Used Asus for 6 months, no lag
Trying out Samsung for 1.5 months, already lagging.

        • My Samsung is fine… 1 years.

        • I had S2 for 3 years and never an issue. Might be defective piece or too many big apps.

        • Also used LG G2 & LG G Pro2 for year and half, never lags.

        • Oh its bloat, just not stuff you see in the app draw.
Ive heavily hacked up pretty much every high end samsung phone there has ever been. I found myself removing 60+ services/applications from the background of the Note4, unbelievable. Ive never seen a mobile device eat as much RAM as the 2014/2015 Samsungs, all for crappy add-on services that arent used by anyone.
Ive since moved to CM12 on the note4 and its the fastest device ive ever had (and thats saying something). CM12 is basically using the stock Samsung kernel too, so its all the OS and its associated apps/services.

My Wife's SGS5 with lollipop however runs quite nice, though still bloated on the full stock ROM and required some good cleanup.
I understand most people cant necessarily do what i do, but you can believe me when i say its full of bloat, hidden bloat, the worst kind.

        • @akd: Uss a newer phone or a phone from another manufacturer and you'll notice the lag on your sgs2

        • @ko0l: I used Nexus 5 for some time and now using iPhone 5. May be my use is moderate, but I never experience significant lag in S 2. IPhone is better but it also has some lag sometimes.

    • you just bad luck. I have S1, S2, S4 and S6, plus many samsung used by friends. If your phone is out from a brand new samsung factory, yes it's crap!

    • My note 4 is great on lollipop. It does suffer the occasional lag like all phones and is worse than my old one m8. However I am being pedantic about it. On kitkat it was horrible though. Also lots of people don't notice the lag until they use a better device. Just like the previous comments here from users that don't notice lag, all phones lag, especially android ones.

The note 4 is a great phone and better in most aspects compared with my old m8.

  • I see. Thanks Alex though the idea you mentioned is not possible since we need for customers to get the email first - which means they already have a prepaid service with Telstra.

i asked if a newly ported over number would be allowed and they said this in chat.
so id say it wouldnt work.

    • Sounds like it's a targeted offer and not a deal then. It is hard to know whether they will honour it or not.

      • doesn't make sense as it said if you are porting over from another provider just enter their customerID

        • That sounds promising then. Coverage for Telstra is a lot better than Optus in my area.

        • @ShamelessBargains: yeh I know - im switching from TPGs old $17/m plan to this ~ $24/m

          $550 to unlimited
          1GB to 2GB

          worth the extra $7!

        • i know anyway i just made an order with my number so ill see how it goes if i get it.

  • +1

    Very very nice find OP!

  • Good Deal. Just wondering, does this plan provide any $ value to use for things not included in the plan already, such as overseas calls, premium texts and stuff???

  • -2

Are the handset Locked to Telstra ?

  • Has anyone tried using this deal to negotiate a better deal with their current provider?

    • You could be the first! :)

  • I'm already with Telstra, and an old $49 contract that has already finished. Has anyone here tried switching to this as an already-existing Telstra postpaid user?

    • I am on $50 casual plan and just signed up and received an order confirmation email.

But not sure if they will honor

      • Thanks

I just signed up too, and got the online order receipt. Let's see if they honour. Saving $19/mth is enticing to me!

        • Just received my delivery info

        • @Idlebrain29: UGH I got a text from Telstra saying to call them back coz they need to "verify" things within 3 days. Did you get something similar?

        • @MJM: no just order confirmation followed by startrack tracking

        • @Idlebrain29: How'd you go with your phone? did you manage to activate the $45 plan?

        • @MJM: i just received a new phone with welcome letter and no sim was included in the pack to activate. just using my old sim.

  • +1

Just signed two years away! Thanks OP

    • Did you port from Telstra prepaid or from a different carrier?

      • +9

Different carfiercarrier, bpostboost mobilemobile. Ssomething dodgyt kdykey isis dlingdoing something swiftswift keykey

        • +1

Hope you didn't get the Samsung again!

  • +1

Nice - just ported from Boost 40!
Handset sale offset should reduce monthly bill to $20. 2GB on Telstra 4G for that is a steal.
Can't wait to finally fire up my Oneplus with 4G goodness.

    • The Samsung retails at Dicks for $649, eBay prices range from $500-800. With the influx of phones for sale due to this deal I'm thinking $400-500 at the most for a quick sale.

  • on telstra 4G network?

    • T&C say 4GX network or 4G or 3G - you get them all!

I might get signal in the airport tunnel!

  • the extra $10/gb charge over 2gb limit is a bit scary….telstra count by kb or mb?

    • agree - that's a bit of a rort. just gotta setup a cap on your phone or keep monitoring

once you go over 2Gb its $10 and you have 3GB. not sure whats its counted by - surely cant be Mb

      • if's mb then it's no deal for me, I surely go over the 2gb ..

      • +1

Rort? More like a bargain. I went above by about 100mb on my 1.5GB live connected plan recently and had to pay a little over $60. Now that's a rort.

        • yikes. nevertheless im waiting in chat to confirm if its charged at mB or kB

        • +2

@havok44: confirmed with Telstra chat its charged per kB

    • +1

charged per KB block with Telstra

This is a targeted offer to specific Telstra prepaid customers. The email states "As a valued Pre-Paid customer we’ve handpicked an exclusive offer for you!"

Each link emailed has a unique ID.

I'd be surprised if this is honoured, but you never know!

    • Agreed. They will not honor this. They do not have 10,000 spare old-gen phones lying around.

    • Yep, definitely targeted, both my partner and i are on prepaid, only i received the email, the link i got has a different ID string to the one from the OP's. I agree with @2pro4sho that they would not have anticipated thousands of sign-ups or even close to 10000 phones available to "giveaway" at the up take rate.

Be prepared for a cancelation email if you didn't receive the invitation.

    • +1

The "clean" URL appears to work fine without the unique ID's
      https://www.telstra.com.au/latest-offers/pre-paid_offer

  • 2266 clicks. Do they really have thousands of these phones available? The lack of details in the offer make it seem like it's an error. It clearly says casual plan with a $0 phone, but also mentions about extra costs for a MRO (mobile repayment option).

  • Upgraded to Optus HTC M8 60 dollar plan exactly 8 days ago. I get just one extra GB of data and Netflix. …… Oh well shit happens.

I have experience with both s5 and m8. M8 is much taller with great speakers and its body feels good in hand. S5 have bit more features(software features that is) and buttons are not on screen. Samsung are easier to sell but M8 is worth more. Both have similar performance and battery life.

So things too consider are, [Samsung, HTC], [good speakers, great speakers], [bit more compact, Taller size], [extra software features, nothing], [off-screen buttons, on screen buttons],[Easy to sell, bit more money]

  • Its definitely 10 bucks a gig. I have it on my current telstra plan

  • Nice post OP. Is there anyway to pay extra for a handset upgrade to an iPhone or something?

    • This is a targeted offer for current Telstra pre-paid customers to upgrade from pre-to-post paid.

      • Yes I understand, I have a prepaid service atm with Telstra.

        • Unless you are on an "old" outdated plan and received the targeted email you will not be eligible. They are trying to move people off very old plans they have very very good value. Me and my family have 3 telstra prepaids. Only mine received this offer as it is on a very old cap encore plan. The email stated my name and mobile number.

  • +7

I've been a telstra pre-paid customer on the $40 encore cap for over 2 years now. Received this offer in my email 2 days ago but decided to skip it due to the following reasons:

    1. International calls - on the prepaid cap I can use all my credit ($510 on $40 cap) to call overseas if I want, and get free local minutes from the recharge credit. Also, pre-paid has free local calls and texts after 6pm. On this post paid plan, even though I get unlimited local calls and texts, I can't call or text overseas. I have family overseas so I call them a lot, and it's convenient to be able to call them from my primary number.

    2. The $40 recharge credit can be used on google play apps and games, plus packs for data, voice calls, texts and even international data. Also, unused credit carries over to the next month. I saved $300 on my overseas travel by buying international roaming data plus pack from recharge credit.

imo reasons why pre-paid customer should go for this deal:

    1. Getting a high-end, though last year handset is a good deal for those who need/want a new phone.
    2. If you mostly call and text locally and don't care about international calls.
    3. 2GB data per month is more than sufficient for the average user.
    • I'm on the prepaid too, but on the 12 month plan and I just get the $20 data packs if I need it. I hardly make calls and if I do I just use my credit.
