TCL 3S Octacore 1920x1080 2GB+16GB 4G 13MP+8MP Eyeprint Identification @JD US $119.96 Delivered

1090
JD618X

A few good deals @ JD.com at the moment. This is my pick of the bunch, 5 inch, beefy front and rear camera, lots of frequencies to make many people happy, octacore and decent battery. I liked the redmi listed earlier today, but for $20 more you get better screen, more memory, better camera, similar battery, more processors, and TCL is one of the top 7 phone manufactures in china. I have spent a good bit of time translating through chinese websites and it seems some of this model has the sony exmor and some have samsung isocell camera - both pretty darn good. One site even said it has a metal frame.

US $138.99+$0.97-$20(coupon) = $119.96 roughly AU$150 depending on who you pay with.

Yeah K3 is a great phone. For me I really need high spec cameras, regular phone calls, text and a very little web browsing. Maybe a little angry birds while I'm on the loo or in a waiting room. So for me this is better.

        • @xEnt: Thats because it's presale. You wont find hacker info on an elephone p8000 yet either

        • @xEnt:
my guess.. and it's just a guess, is that even though Lenovo is well known brand, due to the k3 note using a mediatek cpu (mediatek does not release their source code) you wont find much for it..

          do you have any links?
I'm trying to make up my mind

        • K3 is better for gaming and heavy apps. But this one is pretty good for normal use. Videos, Pictures and chatting apps. And highlight of this phone is Iris scanner. If someone is not interested in Iris scanner, you can find many better phones for same price.

        • +1

I've considered K3, but hesitant because it is 5.5" - not really keen on starting to use the 5.5" size phones. It's not that I don't want the screen size, but more that I don't want to get used to it, given the additional bulk.

If I could find a K3 that was 5", I think I'd go for that.

In light of what you've said though, how do you think both the K3 and this phone compares to other previous-gen flagships? For example, compared to a Galaxy S4 or Galaxy S5?

        • funnily enough there is actually a lenovo k3, minus the note.

          http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=6848&idPhone2=…

i would say that the k3 note is roughly equivalent to last years flagships, please correct me if i'm wrong.

edit: as you can see though it's a completely different phone, and with the nice discount you probably won't find it significantly cheaper :(

        • @illumination:

i believe they are on par with the S5. not build quality or display etc, just the specs/performance.

    • -3

      and is only 5 inch

      Are you serious?

    • why they use both 4x 1.5GHz and 4x 1.0GHz to increase cost?. to save battery?

      • The K3 Note actually uses the MT6752 which is 8 cores all running the same speed. No Big.LITTLE architecture here

  • Are there any Chinese-fluent people here that know where to find out how much this phone would retail for within China itself "in-store" (if possible)?

  • +2

a little bit of reading on mediatek, for the ones thinking in going between this or a mediatek based phone
    http://www.xda-developers.com/have-you-paid-your-linux-kerne…

    • This is very interesting…should certainly make anyone think twice before buying an MT-powered phone…

Anyone know if this is a worthwhile upgrade over a LG G2? The only issue I have with the G2 right now is the poor camera. Everything else about the G2 is still decent.

    • +1

Really? I also have a g2 and the camera is still pretty good even in today's standard. My phone is rooted and running cloudyG2 2.2. I wouldn't mind a new phone but I have absolutely no issues with it

    • +1

Nope, it would be a downgrade actually. Btw, lg g2 lollipop is available on the pc suite. I just upgraded a few weeks ago.

  • I'm in the same boat.
Recently sent my G2 to repairs tho (screen flickering issue). Due back any day now.
The other thing i don't like is the fact that it hasn't received the upgrade to lollipop. Not really keen to root.

    • Yes, why is it taking so long to get the upgrade. Didn't LG announce it earlier this year?

  • They did but i think its released everywhere but OZ! Lame…

    • I imported my G2 (D802). It seems to be a SEA version, but no OTA update so far.

      • I've been following the whirlpool forum and can confirm lollipop has been released for international version. You will need to download it from LG support tools tho. Just make sure you back up everything first, it's not supposed to delete anything but you can never be too sure.

        • That's correct, I had my update a few weeks ago but mind you that the new multitasking list is slowing the phone down.

  • My phone just got run over. Lol literally.
Wondering where a good website to go to compare Chinese phones together in order to make a good decision on what to get next would be. I wouldn't mind spending more money if the specs get better etc. Ideas would be spectacular. Thanks all :)

  • typo oops

This is a good phone. However need reviews to confirm the battery capacity is real (if its important to you - this is one area where a number of chinese android manufacturers are supposedly dodgy ie Mlais). Lenovo specs are the real deal. Only downside is the lack of backlit menu buttons at the bottom :/.

      • OK I'll go for Lenovo then…

      • +2

How can you see reviews on real world battery duration when it's presale. Above some one said he has had a tcl for 2 years with no issues. But fear of the unknown always feels more when buying overseas.

        • +1

          Ta again!

        • Actually if you can read Chinese / decipher Google Translate you will get reviews on Taobao: http://find.taobao.com/product/1204823.html

Taobao has this great system which aggregates reviewer comments. One of the key points from a number of people (28 out of 556) were that the battery life wasn't that great.

        • @pseudobacon: But how do these people rate the battery performance of a phone before it's even available?

        • +2

@illumination: It's been available in China since May. These are real reviews, not guesses

    • +1

Spy - There has been a bit of discussion on this in this post above. TCL has better front camera, metal in construction and better screen colours. Possibly better main camera too. But it's presale so you will need to wait for accessories. The K3 is has a faster processor but a lesser front cam and on spec the colours in the screen are not as good.

So it depends on what you want to do. If you want grunty processing, available now (not presale) and already has roms and accessories then K3, if your more artistic and like taking lots of photos, enjoy a more colourful screen, can wait a few more weeks and find peace of mind in having some metal in its frame, then the 3S is great.

      • Thanks for your awesome response. I want it all but can't have it obviously lol.
        Choices choices….

  • +1

I've had a tcl s950 for 2 years now.. Great phone and still going strong! So I can vouch for the brand.
For ROMs I'd check the website needrom.com

  • -1

argh………should have bought this instead of the Galaxy Note 4. I've been gibbed. :(

    • +1

I needed a replacement for my note 2 and could not justify the cost so I went chinadroid sniffing for weeks and weeks before I found this. Just feel comforted that you are paying for quality brand, or buy one of these and sell off the note 4 when this arrives…

    • -2

LMAO. You can't seriously think this compares to the note 2 lest the note 4…

      • +2

To be honest, I never used all the capacity of the note 2.

  • Can anyone confirm/ deny whether 32G microSD is the max it can take at all? cheers :)

    • +3

People often report they exceed the specified capacity on these china phones. It's just finding a compatible brand of SD. As for confirming, it's presale so no one can personally confirm till they get one ;-)

  • I have never heard of JD before. Anyone bought from them? Thoughts?

    • They are the Chinese Amazon and all their products are genuine. However I have never used their RMA process overseas so cant comment.

      • I thought taobao was the chinese amazon?.

        • I think Taobao was inspired by eBay.

        • @maxhu: Seems correct. Theres basically everything you can think of on Taobao. It's like the street markets of Hong Kong online. JD has a smaller selection of goods, and only genuine stuff

  • Snapdragon 615 is old. I'll wait for another deal

    • You're probably confusing it with the Snapdragon 600. The 615 only started sampling in Q3 of 2014, and only just now we are seeing devices utilising it, such as the Xiaomi Mi4i, Nubia Z9 Mini, Innos D6000 and this phone

  • Bought! Just hope they can do slightly better than 70 days for delivery.

  • Nice find. lewa os based on android 4.x was pretty crappy haven't tried 5.x based though.

  • Phones like this make me question why I spend $500 on a note 4. I think unless the new nexus 5 is incredible I'll be sticking with my note 4 for a while. The only thing I dislike about the note is the avg speaker.

    • +1

Yeah this is a replacement for my Note 2 which still works pretty well but suffering from major crackage. It can limp along till this arrives.

    • I don't question the $900 I spent day one. Perhaps read as to why the Note 4 is so superior.

    • Lot of it is brand name. There is a certain level of quality which that brings. To a point. But as a friend who works in the mobile area pointed out - a lot of the brand name phones really get churned out of chinese factories at around $120 - 150ish each (he cited Apple and Samsung as to main examples to me) - think of the % profit those big brands make.

    • Maybe you think a BMW it's over priced compared to a Kia. Is that your logic? Greg generally speaking Chinese brand products are inferior in quality than the Japanese and the Korean. For tcl, they are definitely not famous for their quality. For example, bought a tcl full HD TV, end up with about 100 pixels less in vertical and horizontal - the tv frame just makes them.

  • Many thanks to the original poster for this. Been looking for a replacement for the old S2 which has been slowly dying and this looks the goods. Only thing is that I hope the payment went through properly. got an email saying it had but the paypal screen hung on the page and never went to confirmation. Thanks again Shipshape RC

    • Your welcome. If you log back into jd and go to your orders it will show the status as paid or not. If not paid, check with paypal first, then just complete the payment from your orders page in jd. It's pretty simple.

  • +1

I ended up taking k3 lol, after bargainer's reviews,

    • Gee don't read the guy who's k3 just arrived on this mornings new phone post https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/199706 He actually has it and hates it. You wont see an actual ozb review for the tcl as it is presale.

      • He seems to be happy with V3 AOSP installed though….

        • +2

That's good because I have a k3 on order, I also have a tcl 3s on order so I will know first hand how they compare. Both my wife and I needed to update. When I found the TCL 3S I was going to cancel my order for the k3. But crowd seems fairly evenly divided so I figure I will keep it and then I can review for future as they both seem a good set of features for $$. Can see if the fast processing of the K3 has a real advantage or if the better cameras, screen combo of the 3S is a winner.

        • @ShipShapeRC: Me in the same boat as you bro.

        • -1

@ShipShapeRC: only concern I have with TCL/Alcatel is their record with average quality phones even for the Chinese market standards. Oh well we'll get to find out soon :)

      • Should i cancel the order, is it possible to cancel? how to do it.

  • Delivery in 60 days killed the deal

    • +1

Oddly enough they say the ship in 7-10 days and even their DHL says 60 days. Never known DHL to take 50-53 days to deliver from China.

      • +1

They only say to cover themselves. Should arrive in a month me thinks.

        • That's what I was thinking too.

  • +2

Thanks to all who gave this deal a + and all the great feedback and questions. The deal expires tonight. I was hoping I would get a popular badge (100 votes) but we have not had a single vote today so I assume all that are interested in this kind of deal have already seen it. That's okay I'll have to hunt an even better deal.

For all those that purchased one, I too hope it arrives in less than 60 days. Fingers crossed and thanks again for the nice words people said about finding this deal. Happy Bargain Hunting!

    • +1

Aww, I just gave you a + vote just because you are so close to 100 already!

Someone get this man his 'Popular Deal' badge!

    • +2

TBH i actually quite like this deal. But im cautious by nature so not sure if its for me. Good for the right people. Thanks for the effort and +1 :)

      • +1

Yeah I am rather cautious too. Spent waaaaay too long looking into these things., I can drive my wife to distraction that way at times. I figure, great specs, Im kinda IT savy (although never goosing around with phones) but ultimately, it seems great value so the risk vs low price made me purchase. But I totally understand sitting back. Thanks for the +

  • +1

Don't usually comment but this man deserves another plus! hope you get that badge with this +

    • +1

      I did THANK YOU all!

  • Bit the bullet. For a smidge more than the price of a new screen for my dodgy SG3 I'll give this one a go.
Worst case, the missus can replace her nexus 4 with this.
Interested to see how it goes. Question is, will there be many accessories?

    +1 OP.

  • The TCL 3S does not have a metal frame as alluded to in the OP's post. It is plastic, and bendy at that, as you will see in this teardown video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0_MGXgrisE

    • Nice video, but where does he bend anything? Also the frame that was taken off (outer frame) was kinda shiny and may well be metal or chromed plastic - the video did not show either way!

I don't appreciate the alluded phrase, kind of puts a vibe of intentional misinformation. I clearly said one site said metal.

FACT: Here is the site. http://www.devicespecifications.com/en/model/7c7d3431
It says body material is plastic and aluminium alloy.

It's a presale model so it may or may not have metal in the final product. Like it may have an isocell or exmor camera, I was open about that too - I am not the designer nor manufacturer. We shall see what the final production model has when it arrives. Its a bit like the sites that say the elephone p8000 will have a sony camera from the prerelease info, that changed before production. The video link you show gave no indication either way other than the inner tray is plastic, the outer frame was not described in anyway, which is a shame.

No allusions, simple statement - 1 site I saw said it has metal. I could be wrong though, "several" or even "many" sites may say it has metal. But to be clear I saw one site that said it does. Hang on that's what I said in the post!

      • +1

I wasn't trying to say you misrepresented, that's actually why I used the word alluded, I guess we have different ideas of the words meaning.

In the video at exactly 1:57: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0_MGXgrisE&t=1m57s

While he is taking the frame off he pokes it for a second by accident and it bends the top inwards with his tool, I don't think metal would bend like that.

        • Holy cow batman, it does too. Geez you get +1 for being super observant. I watched that and totally missed it. Maybe they are shipping plastic now. We shall see. I'll be buying a case and tempered glass for it either way. Well spotted.

  • Oops I missed it…
still sitting on the fence, cautious. lol

    • Yup, been there and done that many times. And probably many more to come.

      • +1

        Haha that's fine.
There have been such a flood of these good phones. Hopefully another one will come up shortly.

  • My order status is still awaiting shipment, looks like 60 days will be a long wait.

    • If you check your order it says 10 days to shipping. It's been at most 8 days. Don't worry you are not alone. I'm checking each day too.

  • I ordered this and a K3 from jd. They said the K3 would ship in 7 days and it did. Lets see if the TCL ships in a couple more days.

  • My order has been shipped and says it should arrive in 5-12 days. I was beginning to get settled in for the two month wait by forgetting about it when I received the email this morning.

This deal is still pretty much available on their site for $138 USD with free shipping until 2nd July. Not sure if promo code will still work though.

    • That's great news. Did you use the free shipping option? I expect mine will ship tomorrow.

      • I did at the time of order but that was some time back.

    • If the promo code still works I'll probably get one. Will check it out later.

edit: I can't even try it because it says out of stock now. Damn.

    • @jtc13 did you receive your K3 in 12 days, i did receive email its already a month and i havent receive my k3 yet.

  • Anyone know what "Awaiting Acceptance" means under order status?
Sounds like payment to me but NFI really..

    • +1

That means it has shipped - Awaiting YOUR acceptance of the product. Click on View Order Details on the rhs and it will tell you when it shipped.
