No store stock around Sydney CBD for the drive but the mates rate $10 discount made it free shipping.

    Thanks.

    • Can you elaborate? Where do we find this discount?

You sign up for a Dick Smith account and the helpful informative e-mail offers to spend, then buy something - it comes in the e-mail. You get a one-off code for your next on-line purchase over $50. It doesn't appear to show up if using pay-pal, and probably expires if your next on-line purchase is less than $50.

A picture post is worth a thousand words!

  • Missed out on the compact/portable ones damn it…….

  • 3TB is a pretty good price all things considered

    • 3TB Seagate drives have a bad rep for failing.

      • so have the 2TB, so I have heard. But I use quite a few of each and have no probs at all.

        • I have the 5TB for over 4 months no issues, I pulled it out and used it internally

        • Yeah i think its a bit of luck of the draw, i just RMA'd an internal 3TB (ST3000DM001) it was perfectly fine one day and then the next it was completely trashed, windows wouldn't boot with it plugged in and the only thing that could see it was Seagate tools and ultimate boot CD - both reported the drive as failed, i couldn't even recover any data off of it. I only read afterward that the 3TB's had a high fail rate.

          @Gomo:

          Ouch!

        • The Seagate expansion external USB drives I own run very hot. 65 degrees Celsius under load according to S.M.A.R.T. without cooling. I have desk fans aimed at them if I'm doing serious transfers. I don't think they are well enough ventilated. Some of the older Western Digital were better but not by a lot. The latest WD vertical drives seem to have ventilation done right. They don't get anywhere near as hot.

What difference does it make with the failure rate? By not backing up you are exposed to viruses, theft, fire, flood, surges, deletion, corruption and the list goes on.

      • Thats the old ones though isn't it? Even then i've been using 5x of them, removed from the enclosure, for the last 2 years with only one problem, that being that they keep spinning up. Most of them are already on 10000 spin ups. Theres software from seagate you can use to disable this, but i've never got around to it.

        • What software?

      • I have had my 3TB expansion drive for about 3 years. Used few hours everyday. Got it for about the same price too. HDD prices haven't moved in years.

its mains. If it was not, it would be advertised as portable

  • Does anyone know if I ordered something for click and collect now could I pick it up in an hour??

    • It varies. The store doesn't get notified of your order immediately. It can take as little as 15 minutes or as long as a few hours. Either way, you'll need to wait for the confirmation SMS.

      • I had to go elsewhere. I thought dick was open till 9 on Wednesdays so I wouldn't have to sit in traffic for 30 minutes but turns out they're only open till 5:30 so I had to make a dash somewhere local.

    • i did.
I just printed out the email and went to the store around an hour later.
this was earlier in the year.
