Definitely not a bargain. I bought his for $175 but sold it for $145 because the firmware is unstable. I have tried custom firmwares as well and again it is just a waste of time. I recommend to avoid this modem unless you have a specific needs.

      Wow. Just wow

Are you sure you're talking about the D7000 or the R7000? The D7000 is both a modem and a router, and as far as I know don't have any custom firmwares available for it yet.

    • This came out only a few weeks ago, are you sure you're reviewing the right product?

      Looks to support VDSL 2.

    • I already tried to explain this but my comments got unpublished….

wow pretty hard to justify a consumer grade modem/router/AP for that price, there must be something outstanding about it

    looks like a dalek

  • Some food for thought…the standalone router version can be had a lot cheaper and you can pair that up with a cheapie $30 modem. Generally router and modem combos are like this aren't very good.

I have both the router version of this and the ASUS AC68u. ASUS releases monthly updates to their firmware. Nighthawk comes with a faster chip but if you are just using stock firmware highly recommend getting the ASUS ac68u purely that is more stable and has much more software/network capabilities

But but but…the R7000! Most powerful CPU in a router!!! OVER 9000!!!!11!1!!one

    • Agreed. Using the 68 with merlin and it's bloody brilliant.

    • Just wondering, has anyone tried the R7000 with XWRT http://xvtx.ru/xwrt/ ?
It says it is : "ASUSWRT-MERLIN FIRMWARE FOR DIFFERENT ROUTERS" …
I'm asking, because I see that a lot of the time the R7000 is cheaper than the Asus AC68U.

      • Asuswrt-merlin has been brilliant for me. The ability to see who is using up most of the bandwidth is a huge bonus as we can sometimes have up to 40 wireless clients at one time. The QoS is also very useful. I found the stock Netgear firmware quite good, but limited. The Asuswrt-merlin opened up a whole new set of useful features.

I've been beta testing the D7000 for a few months and it's nothing the like the R7000.

The D7000 is fairly stable (bar some miniDLNA bugs that are likely to be patched soon) and performs fairly well. From my experience, it's not tweaked for bleeding edge performance, but instead delivers reliable and solid throughput. In my books, that's the right approach. I'd much rather get solid 28MB/s throughput than have a fluctuating 28-30Mb/s with the occasional dropout.

My current uptime on the D7000 is 43 days (previous reboot due to a firmware upgrade) and the ADSL2+ uptime is just under 20 days, but the dropout there was due to the ISP having unscheduled downtime.

One thing to be aware of with the D7000 is that it is a fully capable VDSL modem. If / when Australian ISPs get their shit together and start offering fast ADSL, this modem can reportedly handle sustained speeds of 70Mbps down and 20Mbps up. Theoretical maximums are probably faster than that.

The only two real issues I had with the beta testing samples was that the LEDs were too bright (but there is a physical slider switch to turn the indicator LEDs off) and that the plug pack was large. The power supply needs to be large to supply enough power the two USB3 ports and any attached HDDs. I suggested that they should provide a laptop style power supply, rather than an oversized plug pack. Those two things may well have been fixed for the final product release.

  • Does tpg support VDSL? Im getting a speed of 14mgs shown at my modem setting. Will my internet speed(At least via ethernet) increase if i bought this? May seems like silly question but will appreciate an answer.

as to whether you will get NBN FTTN serviced via VDSL you'll need to check the NBNco website.

No point buying this if you are not getting NBN in your area.

  • just an FYI, if this thing does VPN the same thing the R7000 then you can use android to VPN to it using OpenVPN Client, no root required. works on my nexus 5… I was pretty stoked I got it working over the weekend, as tap doesn't usually work on android.
