  • Great price for this phone, much better deal than the 735/640. finally at a true budget flagship price point.

    • 735 is also a very good phone at around $150, same CPU and GPU as 830
      http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=6639&idPhone2=…

      • There's more to a phone than just the cpu and gpu. The 830 has pureview camera with ois. It has a more premium build quality, wireless charging and band 28 the 735 doesn't have. Microsoft call the 830 a affordable flagship. It's a much better phone than the 735/640.

        • 735 does have wireless charging and a 5MP front camera vs the 830 which has 0.9. OIS is good though. Each to their own but both phones are good deals for the respective prices. I wouldn't say the 830 is MUCH better.

        • Wrong. Both 735/830 have wireless charging built into the back cover. 830 has Pureview/dedicated camera button that goes with it, glance screen (due to the memory in IPS displays) and a premium outer metal shell. 735 has a 5MP front facing "wide angle" camera and OLED display (which I personally prefer for windows phones).

So factoring price, 735@$149 and 830@$199. They are pretty much the same.

          @bob_wangkar:

Link to 735 deal?.. Wrong you can't find any 735 for $149. And no the 735 doesn't support band 28.

You also forgot to mention the dolby surround sound. Even if you could find the 735 for $149 it's still not as good of value.

        • +1

@Ronnnie: Here's the 735 I bought from Good Guys (I think) for 148 bucks… I'll try and find the Ozbargain deal that got me on to it

        • @Cooties: Yep the deal is here

        • -6

          @Cooties:

The Good Guys no longer sells the 735. Deals in the past are no longer relevant. You can't buy the 735 today for $149.

Yep neg my post, but this isn't ozpast bargains…

FWIW you could have got the 735 for $155 a couple of days ago, but that doesn't help anyone in the market for a phone now. I'd be pissed off though if I bought the Lumia 735 and saw this for $44 more.

        • +5

@Ronnnie: While I think you might have a point about 830 being better than 735 in many regards (well for starters, MS does put the model in the higher price range/higher device class), whether it is a better value? I have to stop and think about that. OIS would be important for some, band 28 would be too, build quality, that'd be really good. $50 at this price range is fairly large though (You have to pay 33% extra (approx) from 735 to grab 830). Not to mention, there are areas that 830 is worse at, mainly the front camera (it would be important for some). In short, I don't think I cannot deny that it feels like you are paying extra for that extra (whether it's adequate/good value etc? That's up to people to decide).

Not to mention, deals in the past are no longer relevant? Electronics generally becomes cheaper as time goes. So I usually use older deals as an anchor point for judging whether a deal on electronics is a good one or not.

        • +5

@AznMitch: Re electronics getting cheaper. Not anymore, apart from our dollar's dive, many manufacturers have been putting their prices up for a few years.

Monitors - base models seem to be heaps more expensive than they were around 2010 - maybe back to 2008.

          DSLR since 2012, 2013
          - Step above entry have almost doubled(even for the same model and internationally) eg. Canon have kept the 600D from 2011 in the range, with a model above for the last couple of years, and now 3 models above, and the slid in another entry level model. So they seem to have pushed the pricing up to fit the large number of entry models
          - mid range/semi pro have jumped 40-50% of the previous sale prices
          - top models have crept a couple of hundred and never see the $500-$600 off sale prices. Being more like $200 off.
          - Sony models have stayed the same sort of rrp, and you don't see the same lower street price or large discounts.

TV's - No cheap entry models.
HDD - All over the place heading up. eg 4TB sale prices have gone up 30%+ since last year.

          and on and on….

        • @Major Mess: the Changhong from the other day is a good cheap entry model

        • @Major Mess: I thought all electronics would have falling price because of newer model coming out and retailer reducing the price to remove their old (less attractive) stocks. Laptops, phones, tablets all have that kind of trend in general. I guess I was wrong on that regards. Will keep what you've said in mind if I were to grab anything you've mentioned.

        • Mitch do you think the 830 is going to get cheaper than this?

What about the 735? Last I checked pretty much nowhere sells it, so it's unlikely to become available again at $149. However no one can say for sure. I contacted Dicksmith to try my luck.

Just an example the 1520 for instance will cost you more now than it did about 7 months ago.

My Note 4 from the good guys worked out cheaper a few months back than it does in the recent deals. I'm sure eventually it'll become cheaper, but not today.

Unfortunately you can't go back in the past and get the deal that was better at another time. And there's no guarantees in the intermediate future that'll you get those deals. If you are in the market for a product now, then you have to compare it against whatever products are available at their respective price points at that time. Not what it was yesterday or 6 months ago

        • @AznMitch: They seem to get the timing of stock levels right a lot better when new models are due, and what little stock is left is dumped pretty quick. They probably move stuff around to different international markets, as you will sometimes see stock that has not been available in Australia for a year or so turn up again at a clearance price. Even manufacturer refurbished gear is not as good value as it was in 2013.

        • +1

@Ronnnie: You are trying to win, not trying to talk. I hate sounding like a twat who thinks he knows everything, but what you are doing is pretty much what politics do all the time. You see an argument, you twist the words around so that it has some connections to the original argument but is different, you pretend you've won the argument by refuting that. In short, you are doing what is known as the straw man.

If I do something similar to what you've done, I'd probably say something like, why not make Ozbargain into OZ-what's the current lowest price? According to you, older price don't matter and we don't really know about the future price, so why not just have a bot that collects data from everywhere and post the current lowest price in the market? Obviously, you didn't mean it like that.

          Let me reiterate,

So I usually use older deals as an anchor point for judging whether a deal on electronics is a good one or not.

Did I say that I go penny by penny comparison to the best deal that have ever existed? No. I simply use older deals as a point in which I compare the current price to when I need to find whether a deal is a bargain. If I saw a Note 4 deal that went $600, I'd probably inclined to not buy anything above that price, since as you've said it, "eventually it'll become cheaper" (well at least it's not unlikely).

        • @Ronnnie: Okay, well Officeworks are selling the 735 unlocked for $149 as well. It's just not listed.

        • -1

          @bob_wangkar:

I was in officeworks today picking up the 830. No sign of the 735. I'm sure by now though they would have sold out months ago, since when I tried getting one for $179 they told me that it was an EOL item that they were no longer restocking. I would have been happy to have paid $179 for one at the time. I can find it listed on ebay from OW here. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Nokia-Lumia-735-Unlocked-Windows-…

The 830 fwiw is similar to the 930, it has great build quality, nice 5 inch screen and the camera on the 830 is brilliant. Certainly it's much better than I was anticipating. Also the captivative buttons light up and I would prefer having capacitive buttons over on screen buttons. Also like having the camera button, more phones should have this. I've never seen a phone offering such quality for below $200 before. But it should be an incredible phone considering it was originally around $450.

    • Its a nice phone. But I wouldn't really call it a 'budget flagship' at this point. It has a Snapdragon 400 and 1GB ram. That is actually very outdated.

It has a nice Camera and a nice build/screen. But the specs themselves are no better than a Moto G. This is really the type of price point they should be targeting to begin with if they wanted it to be a good seller. At $400 it was overpriced for the phone even before considering the Windows Phone compromises.

      • What you are talking about is the problem with Windows Phone in general (other than the camera and other things, the SoC and RAM are relatively similar, if not the same). What Windows Phone uses to differentiate the phones from budget to flagship is the camera and other aspects of the phone (i.e. in x20 series, it was the RAM (512 vs 1024MB), they all had same SoC, I think (barring Lumia 928 and 1520)).

That said, I don't think you should bring an Android phone into this, simply because Windows Phone are built with lower spec in mind in general (i.e. Windows Phone limit multitasking abilities and other things to reduce performance lags and stuff). So this phone is a budget flagship in that it offers some hardware that is offered in flagships in Windows Phone. I frankly don't like how they do it, but at least my old phone's not outdated as it should be even with Windows 10 Mobile coming out.

      • -1

Microsoft called the 830 an "Affordable flagship".

I don't think any Android manufactures make a phone like this. Usually midrange Android phone's sacrifice the camera, battery and build quality in this price range. Microsoft took an entirely different approach, they provided good quality camera and build quality but sacrificed the area where you will hardly notice on windows phone.

I agree that this phone was overpriced to be selling for ~$450 at release.

To me the camera and build quality is what makes this a good bargain, and better than the other Lumia's that have come down to under $200. I can't see what other phone you could buy that offers a camera this good for this amount of money, most phone's at this price point cheap out in that area.

      • +3

Ahh…another misguided view that CPU + RAM determine handset 'status'.
Windows Phone is a very efficient OS and thus doesn't need much RAM to run smoothly.

        • It using less specs or not isn't really a good argument for the price of the hardware. Considering the problems with the whole Windows Phone OS and its lack of apps you expect it to be a cheaper phone.

I'd probably prefer a MotoG to this. I had a quick glance how many of my core apps are available on Windows Phone and its not many.

        • @xuuj: Hmmm, as a person who owns an Android and a Windows Phone (well I didn't buy my Android phone but it was handed down to me as it was not being used), I see your point but at the same time, I think you are looking at it different to those people who chose Windows Phone.

Barring SoC and RAM, this phone does have a relatively decent camera and comparable hardware. i.e. Gorilla Glass 3 (I guess you could say, what doesn't have those, but still) to flagships, sturdy hardware and decent software support. So in that regards, I don't think you could say worse hardware, as Ronnnie said, SoC and RAM are not the only aspects of the phone.

Does the spec difference in RAM and SoC between Windows Phone and Android phones translate to everyday experience? I have to stop and think. My Lumia 925 would be outdated if it was an Android phone. Snapdragon S4 Plus + 1GB RAM, it'd be on par with Galaxy S3 if you just look at SoC and RAM (Well selected version of S3, according to Wiki). I personally find it comparable to my current Galaxy S4 Active in many ways. The camera is better, phone's definitely lighter and battery life is relatively similar on standby, even better sometimes. There is definitely less tweaking. It felts smoother when I compared it to S4 Active when it was on KitKat (though that said, it was handed down to me, so I am not sure whether my brother bloated it). That said, S4 Active has better screen, more apps, more "freedom" on what I could do with OS, far better multitasking. Better apps, definitely, that's almost given. Ironically, some Android apps allow better integration with Windows PC (i.e. Sidesync, Android apps that stemmed from PC program (i.e. YNAB) etc). That said, even though S4 active has better SoC (Snapdragon 600) and RAM (2GB), at least from where I stand, both phones are comparable at least.

I personally find the strength of Android lying in freedom and how you could utilise the SoC and RAM (as a result, you need brute forcing by hardware and tweaking several things for optimisation). Windows Phone, whereas, have strength in good user experience with limited source (as a result, the multitasking and any other possible resource intensive processing tend to be limited compared to Android, that said, it's better optimised as a result). I think both of them stands relatively well as an OS, it's just how their approach differs.

        • @AznMitch:

While Windows Phone is fast through the OS, does its lower specs hold up for website rendering? That is were I really notice older phones. They are really slow when viewing complex websites. I couldn't imagine the operating system making much difference there.

        • @xuuj: Could you give me some examples (I tend to go onto pages like wikis and stuff, but I don't think I've gone to any websites with so much java scripts) so that I can compare two phones? Since I even have MS Edge on it as well (I am on W10 Mobile Preview), I will use it as well. Though, in terms of Ozbargain-ing, I think both were relatively similar.

        • @xuuj:

You definitely can see a difference when browsing, even on forum webpages you'll notice a difference on these lower spec WP. Anandtech benchmarks compare it against Android and iPhone for cpu performance here. http://www.anandtech.com/show/8726/nokia-lumia-830-review/3

The main area where you will notice the most difference is in app performance. I think this is one downside to WP, some apps are poorly optimised for them. One app that pisses me off the most is spotify, it's so much slower than the Android equivalent on similar hardware. I have a 930 so it can't really be blamed by the hardware for the app performance.

  • This would be way better than the unlocked Lumia 540 from Aldi for the same price although it's not dual sim.

    • There's no comparison really

  • +7

I've been using an 830 for almost a year. I paid $430 for mine and at this price it is a STEAL. Full featured and very fast. Will also get WP10 in a few months. Has SD card slot and removable battery.

    • For the price you paid, why didn't you get 1520? I think it's a lot better than 830 in almost every expect.

      • I don't think you could've gotten 1520 at $430 last year (he did say he had it for almost a year). I've grabbed Lumia 925 for $400 ish when they were getting discounted heaps (With new models coming out to replace it), so I doubt 1520 would've been at that price.

        • in fact I grabed one when on Harvey Norman sales, about 440 or sth, but soon got rid of it because of the size and lack of apps back then

      • I had a 920 at the time and wanted to stay at the same phone size. Plus the 830 was the next generation on from the X20 phones.

  • +1

Wondering about stock levels. Every post code i'm feeding into the store stock checker is coming up as limited stock (which when it comes to Officeworks really means no stock at all).

    • You will have to call each store, no way around it.

    • +4

I am not sure why you'd mention this on a Windows Phone deal, but, there was one from OO.com.au eBay store (with 20% Off code, it comes down to $290~300) and plenty other vendors below your price if you are willing to go grey import .

      • Wouldn't be a Windows Phone deal with out someone needing to bring up Android.

        • I was expecting "Low spec compared to blah" kinda comment, but asking for a price on Android phone was something that I wasn't expecting.

    • +2

G3 was $387, I think it still might be, and it's been as low as $350

  • Picked one up from Mosman, Sydney. It didn't show up as in stock on the website but I called the store and they had one left. Unbelievable phone for this price.

  • +4

Fantastic hardware from Nokia. Like a moto-g but good camera and 4g.
A shame they went to the dark side, software wise.
Microsoft must be subsidising this a lot.

    • +1

Well, Nokia's mobile division got acquired by MS, so yeah.

      • Well Nokia entering the market separate from MS next year.

        • Aren't they no longer a manufacturer though? I thought they were planning on doing what they've been doing with their Nokia N1 and stuff. Design products but not manufacture them by themselves. I wonder whether they still have their patents on things like Pureview etc etc. I'd love to see them on Android though, that's for sure (given that they keep up with what they were associated with, a decent brand for phones).

    • shame they went to the dark side, software wise

Dark side compared to what? Symbian lel …

Anyhow, I love WP other than the apps situation.

      • +1

apps are gonna change. MS and Cynogen partnered up and bringing Windows 10 OS to flash onto android phones and also making it extremely easy to transfer ios/android apps to MS store eeeeeeasily.

MS store is gonna be flooded with apps very soon

        • +2

We can believe it when we see it. If it's not for another 2 years anyway most ppl will have a new phone by then. I hate to be a naysayer, but been waiting for Win phone apps for a long time

  • +1

    Great price!

  • Picked up last one from OW South Melbourne.

QV and Elizabeth St both out of stock.

  • I have been after Nokia 215 Dual Sim and couldn't figure out how to buy one as no one is selling in Australia.

sorry, if posted in the wrong place as I wouldn't want to post a forum for it. Any quick guide and valuable response would be much appreciated. thanks.

    • +1

      How about 220 at Mobileciti?
      Or 215 at Gadgetgear

      • Thanks for the link. I did checked at Gadgetgear and I was specifically after green color, and thought if I couldn't find anywhere else I would buy one from Gadgetgear.

p.s: Gadgetgear website looks dodgy, most of the search results shows $0.00. However I did place order for Nokia 215 black color and would see how it goes.

Amazing price for the phone. I bought one for the wife a few months ago for $350 from Kogan.

It's not blisteringly fast, but all other specs are really awesome for this price (heck, I still think they are reasonable for the $350 I paid).

If you can find one, go for it!

Just heard that OW Woolloongabba Qld, have a few in stock.

    • +1

Out of stock in all Brisbane stores, apparently someone bought the last 2 at Woolloongabba last night :-(

I got the Nokia Lumia 530 from the last Optus deal just for Netflix and to play a bit with Windows Phone … pretty impressed. This deal is great price for a phone with these specs … and can't wait until Windows10 comes out.

    • +1

I doubt a phone with an OIS camera and dolby surround sound has ever been sold for under $200 before. To have such a good camera on a phone at this price is incredible value.

  • Picked one up
rang around and could only find last one
    at Chadstone store
spend last couple of hours setting up
    transffered all from my
    current HTC 8X
so far looks great for $200
    and Unlocked
Now to get nano sim so I can use

  • Just got last one from Nth Sydney store at 8am. :) Staff told me that they received at least 10 calls checking stock this morning!!

  • Got the last one from Bayswater (Vic).

  • Just picked up the last 2 at Bundoora

  • Out of stock on all stores I called in Sydney, dang, would have made the perfect gift for my Father.

    • Dang in. All of them?.

Burwood, West Ryde, CBD (Cleanance St one, someone already reported the north one is out) also he guy at Auburn store told me that these above stores were the only ones reporting stock and said you need to call, I suppose the rest were totally done than :( :( :(.

  • Bargain IMO.
Picked one up on release from Telstra on a new contract. Love it. Smooth, fluid OS, great camera, wireless charging.

  • One left in Taree as of about 30mins ago

    • If you don't mind picking it up and posting to Sydney, I'd be happy to cover the shipping cost and an Oporto meal for you, would really appreciate it buddy!

  • If anyone has tested the audio on this with a $200+ headphone what is the audio like….compared to best android which is probably the wolfson on the note 4 exynos ?

oh….I just noticed its snapdragon….so probably not so good audio.

  • Grabbed the last one at Mona Vale, there's 4 more on hold according to the really friendly and pretty girl at the counter who was really curious as to why everyone was calling her store about this phone lol

  • I tried to price match at jbhifi but failed. the rep said jbhifi sells Telstra version which is different to the OW unlocked version…

Seems like its expired now, OW no longer has the deal, our even the phone on their site anymore.
