$191.91 ALTECH Triple Tuner 1TB PVR @ Dick Smith (Online Only)

60

Just bought this last week from Dicksmith for $210 when it was on specials & additional 10% off (what a pity). So this is by far the best deal that I can see. I have been looking out for a PVR since the family watches the Free to air most of the time & I was unnecessarily paying for FOXTEL. Saw this thread on Whirlpool and was instantly sold on this PVR…seems to have some very cool reviews & most importantly….Aussie vendor who has been exceptionally good in responding to customer needs. Last few days of experience with the device has been great! Out goes Foxtel!!!

  • Is it this PVR9600 model listed for $195 at 2ndsworld?

    • That is correct….for anyone outside Sydney (like me) you then add shipping & therefore this is much better

Have you read the thread end to end? Seems like there are some persistent bugs in the unit which are fairly serious. The parent company website has been down for some time as well, that is never a good sign. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2263085&p…

    • I have read it end to end…..depends on what you call 'fairly serious'….i am using it for a week…& kids & self are very happy… did a quick search for a 1TB, Triple Tuner PVR & the starting price is $399.

      • Numerous reports of recordings not playing back, or recordings being duplicated and using up drive space, or unit freezing and requiring a power cycle… All of those go in the 'fairly serious' category. Also sounds like you need to be in an area with a very strong signal. Looks as if all support has been dropped, which is probably why DSE are selling them off cheap.

        • Agree some of those certainly qualify for 'fairly serious'…but I'd qualify that with what are your priorities…& then again may be since they haven't impacted me as yet..it doesn't bother me as much

@bargainiser: If it works for you then that's great :) I don't think it's a matter of priorities though, it's a matter of how much you can afford to risk, because DSE are terrible for returns these days.

  • For an extra $50, you can get FetchTV on a 24 month contract ($10 a month).

Actually, all iiNet-owned ISPs were giving it away for all new and existing customers recently, so it's worth a call to see if you can still score that deal.

It's an awesome piece of kit…my mini review here:

    • Where can you get it for $242? If it's a special ISP deal you should probably mention that, as not everyone uses the same ISP.

  • I bought one of these about three months ago to replace a Topfield 7000 that repeatedly corrupted the hard disk and went into a hard freeze. I got tired of disassembling the unit to reformat the disk. The Altech PVR seems OK so far. The one persistant fault I can't find a way around is that recordings set from the EPG pick up the current time and not the program start time so after seting the recording I have to then go in and modify the start time. Otherwise no problems so far. I'm running it off a fibre cable feed, it picks up all available chanels, PIP works fine, high quality picture on the Sony LCD, it has a neat set of on screen GUI graphics compared to the Topfield. Recomended at the price .. :-) .. !!

  • Will this work if you got VAST?

    • No, this is a terrestrial Digital tuner. UEC do have a VAST capable Twin Tuner PVR
