  • Looks like a pretty awesome price, especially with the 365 subscription.

4GB RAM would be nice but beggars can't be choosers

    • +4

Umm it's already quite rare to find a Z3735/6 unit with 2GB RAM and you're asking for 4? I don't understand.

      • +4

Just said it would be nice, I'm an OzBargainer we always want more.

      • There's nothing particularly special about the Z3735F aside from the fact that it's probably a tiny bit cheaper than the Z3740 (whereas the Z3740 generally performs a tiny bit better).

And it's not particularly difficult to find a Z3740 tablet with 2GB of RAM.

But that is not to say that the Hi8 isn't a good deal. I think it is. If only they hadn't dropped the HDMI port I'd be all over this.

  • +7

    No HDMI :-(

    • Why do people go on about this as a dealbreaker?

      • Because its use for productivity purposes is significantly reduced. It's a deal breaker for me too.

        • And me.

It's not like we're starved for choices in this space, which means that even if an HDMI port is only slightly useful to you it's perfectly logical and reasonable to pass this over for one of the other options.

It's a shame though because the resolution bump probably provides a slightly enhanced experience.

    • +1

      Nor GPS

      • It's funny you should mention that.
Having had quite a few tablets over the past few years, we've grown accustomed to having GPS equipped models - if you wish use them for navigation you can.
The lack of GPS is the one thing that is constantly cropping up as a shortcoming in Windows tablets and seams to be more important than HDMI.
Typically, people buy HDMI capable tablets for media streaming not portable use and hence cheap Android tablets should generally suffice.

    • +4

      The fairly-similar Vi8 has mini-HDMI. It has 1280x800 vs 1920x1080, and 1.8GHz vs 2.16GHz

      • +1

        But no HD screen

        • But it is 10% (US$9) cheaper. And slightly bigger battery: 5000mAh vs 4000mAh

        • @Thrift: yeah, in the review listed earlier the reviewer outlines the differences between the Vi8 and the Hi8.

        • +3

I'm thinking retina displays won't get matched with HDMI out, both together might be too much for this chip.

      • Does Vi8 show full screen HD on 32 or 50 inch TV via HDMI?

  • How is the battle life of this tablet?

    • +18

Depends if it comes up against swords or cross bows.

      • +7

I think you mean lightsabers or bowcasters. Chuwi shouldn't have a problem with either.

    • Depends if against ios, Windows or Android.

    • about 4 hours

    • +1

      About 30 speed.

    • 4000HP

      • Dont you mean over 9000?

  • What you guys reckon I'm thinking I have ipad 2 and a Samsung galaxy note 8.0 and don't need another but can't resist a good deal opinions from current owners?

    • +1

The iPad 2 is badly outdated and the note has a really poor to average resolution.

Neither supports win8 and sometimes it's needed when away from pc. At this price I would get it. Just my 2 cents.

Especially since you can get more that for your two units which I would get rid off while something worth

  • Last time something like this was posted people warned about spyware/malware… are they safe?

    • +7

      Spyware & malware aren't safe

    • +1

There is no more risk to using a tablet like this than there is to using Windows on a desktop computer or Android on a smartphone. The biggest variable is actually you.

(the warnings about spyware/malware are general warnings about Windows itself, not this tablet in particular)

  • check if it has glass screen or plastic. If it has plastic, you have the endless pain of buying screen protectors off ebay …. if it has a glass screen, then it's easy to clean, and doesn't need a screen protector.

I've got a few chinese tables and I HATE the plastic screen ones, and usually sell on ebay before they scratch.

My Teclast x89 is glass and dual boot luckily.

    My PIP0X8 ……. plastic :-(

I hope some of the reps read these posting and do start to include in their listing things like glass vs plastic screens, or with phones, which 4G bands it has for Australia.

    • this review uses the word "glass" when referring to the touchscreen. whether that is just a term to refer to the touch screen is another story.

      • +1

At 8m30s in the first video he says, "glass? or it could even be hardened plastic" - so he's not sure.

Edit: the most recent review on GearBest says as a 'con': "plastic made screen".

    • +1

There is already a plastic film protector (easily scratched, fingerprint magnet, too reflective) so I guess it's also plastic under it. Finding a replacement is a pain. I'm hoping this has the right dimensions and is a good protector (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/141642973397). I would really like a glass-based protector but I don't know how to cut it to size as they are usually based on other more popular tablets.

      • Yeah, tempered glass would be ideal. Difficult to find for these Chinese brands though.

    • glass screens, no thanks.

our tab 3 didn't survive a ~1.5' drop. 1/4 of the screen is small glass shards held together with the plastic screen protector.

the hi8 is made of cheaper mats, lighter and comes with screen protector. it has a better chance of not cracking if dropped from the same height.

      • So you don't have to buy a separate screen protector? There's one included or already attached?

        • the items came with a plastic screen protector attached. i'm not sure if it was installed by the supplier (geekbuying) or at the factory installed. it works.

  • The spyware stuff ………….. you can do re-installs for the windows side, the windows 8.1 loads patches and fixed up clean anyway, or load your own anti-spyware utilities. The Android boot ….. MUCH harder to clean up as you may need to root, and
Google don't really patch Android to remove malware ………. I don't think google cares about your information being farmed or being tracked LOL

    • Another issue with the Android side is that there is no encryption option on the tablet. Wait for a Lollipop version if this is important for you. Also, I had issues with a few SD cards not being recognised (SDXC?).

  • +1

could you claim the $25 microsoft office cash back with this tablet?

    • I have tried, but it appears that the purchase must be made from an Australian seller. Correct me if I was wrong.

    • I didn't see an Office 365 serial in mine.

      • Have to activate before 5th july anyway.

        • MS extended it to 31/7/15 when I looked yesterday

        • @rayski57:

The way I read it is as follows: you have until the 31st of July to submit the details of an Office 365 purchase that was made between the between the 21st May and the 5th of July.

          https://www.microsoft.com.au/officecashback/

"Offer valid between 21st May 2015 and 5th July 2015"

        • +1

@cainn: and it's only valid if purchased from an Australian retailer or MS online store.

          Terms & Conditions:

Purchase Microsoft Office 365 Home or Microsoft Office 365 Personal retail product or any retail computer device or smartphone that comes with Microsoft Office 365 Personal or Home (Product) from an eligible Australian retailer with a current Australian Business Number (ABN) or Microsoft Store online (microsoftstore.com.au) between 21st May 2015 and 5th July 2015

        • @Thrift: thanks

        • @cainn: My comment was directed at edgar28's comment "Have to activate before 5th july anyway." which appears to be incorrect.
Hence my clarification that MS states that it needs to be purchased by 5/7/15, proof of activation and purchase need to be submitted by 31/7.
I confess to not having read the full T's & C's to see if there is further differentiation between the initial clause and the details therein.

Very thorough review (guy does plenty of different ones)

  • reckon this would get here by 2/08/15?

    • +1

I wouldn't count on it if you really need it to be there in two weeks.

I just placed an order and selected 'Australia Line Registered' which is estimated at 3-8 days, but GearBest take a few days until they ship the order (they say 3-5 days, but for me it has been as bad as two weeks). So in the best scenario, considering weekends, you are looking at almost two weeks to arrive.

      • you could pay extra for the express shipping.

        • Are they really any different?

Australia Line Registered: 3-8 business days - $2.99
Australia Line (TOLL): 3-7 business days - $5.99
          Expedited: 4-7 business days - $8.26

        • @Thrift: well compared to free china/singapore/sweden post then they would be a hell of a lot faster.

        • @altomic: there's only 10 business days until Aug 2 - that's a bit of an ask with GearBest's processing/packing time and the fast shipping options (not impossible though).

  • +3

Nice of you to copy my entire post…

    • it was succinct and worthy of reproduction.

      • +1

But you forgot the most important part… the links to GB ;)

  • Acquired one of these from the last gearbest deal. Delivery was fairly quick.
Working ok. Not getting the win 10 update option popping up, apparently this ismdue to the way they dualboot. Works better than my Lenovo miix2 8" did.
    Plastic screen.
Using a 128gb micro sd. Reads fine.
Have not really played around with the android partition so no comments on that side of things.

  • +2

From my experience just because you pay for express shipping doesn't mean gear best will ship with that method… also refused to refund the express shipping…

    • So what exactly are you paying for when selecting express shipping..?

      • +1

        Hope, and possibly disappointment.

  • Its good deal. I paid more than this… Using it right now.

    Lighter than ipad mini 2

  • Note: This Android/Windows tablet is designed only to work with the current Android/Windows OS installed in it. Any alterations such as upgrades or flashing a newer version will void the warranty.

    Question:
Hello :) Can this tablet be upgraded to Windows 10? Will i receive the normal invitation to upgrade Windows for free as in desktop versions of the OS?
    Reply:
Hi, nixnet! The item can update to to Windows 10.

    Hmmm…

  • The review raised two main issues for me:

"I managed only 4 hours and 19 minutes under medium to light use in Windows with the wireless on and brightness at around 40%."

"Like all 32GB dual boots you have limited space, Windows has just 10GB of free storage so once the Windows updates start rolling and then the upgrade to Windows 10 you’ll likely to have much less than this. This is why I personally think all dual boots should have at least 64GB eMMC’s for storage."

Those who want a glass screen might be interested in the Acer W4-820. MSY are selling the 32GB/2GB version for $199 at the moment. Has an HDMI port as well.

Sure, it's almost double the price, and is Windows only (no dual boot with Android), but it's a solid quality offering with a local warranty.

    http://www.msy.com.au/notebooks/13845-acer-w4-820-ntl31sa001…

    • Any glass 8" android pad?

  • Must resist bargain, has no use for another tablet….

  • +1

Is it possible to get rid of one of the OS installs?

    • I was thinking the same thing. Dual boot seems… messy.

  • Hmm when I add the code at checkout it's increasing the price instead…

    • GearBest have raised the price. It was US$92.99 when the deal was posted.

Their new US$121.88 price is already "62% off", the TABPCS code's 8% discount seems to remove some of those "savings".

      • It's still showing as US$92.99 for me though, maybe you have the site set to show prices in AUD? :)

        • Bah, that'd do it, no wonder I haven't been buying anything from them lately… stupid late nights… :)
