Keep in mind, that the optus cable internet is oversubscribed and while they won't admit it, they throttle the speeds during peak periods. Check out whirlpool.net.au and investigate the issues with optus cable internet for yourself before you sign up.

    • Does telstra cable have this throttling or it doesn't happen?

I'm on Optus cable at 30mbs and I've never noticed any slow-down during peak periods. I regularly run speed tests to destinations outside the Optus network and they hardly ever vary. Perhaps your neighbours are running too many torrents or perhaps all my neighbours are on telstra.

looks like you're the only one able to get optus cable in the suburb.

        • +2

Yep. I'm getting 1mbps on a 100mbps plan during peak hours (basically from 5pm). Optus have scheduled 'ugprades' to my exchange on/before July 31st. If it's no better, they will let me out of my contract.

This. I have the highest speed pack applied and before they started offering the unlimited for $90 plan + netflix, it was easily hitting 100 megabits per second. Now after 4pm sometimes I can't even stream youtube. It's a joke!

    • Depending on the area, you might get very fast connection too if only a few existing subscribers.

    • Yeah yeah & only the people who have issues whinge.
Some areas Telstra is slwoer (Like here in Inner North Melb) I had Optus & Telstra side-by-side for 3 days when I did the switch over. Optus were quicker even in the friday ater school time. School holidays they both slow down noticably. It's a shared resource like a road. If there's a trffic jam between you & your destination, we'll be affected.

Telstra has quicker links to the US. So if you're gaming that might help you decide.
Tesltra also QoS VPN traffic, so you'll get noticably better speeds if you're doing that.

      • When did you test it side by side though?

I've had Optus Cable since ~1999, and had zero issues with it until they introduced their Netflix plan..

        • Nov last year. Yeah Netflix is killing a lot of ISPs.
So fair call Telstra doesn't exclude it from their quote so their users probably are big netflix users. But they might have some difficulties from Presto, t-box, Foxtel Go traffic.

    Shittiest speed ever

Crap speeds even though they say they are in the process of upgrading the area and rubbish customer service be prepared to be transfered from department to department.

  • Just signed for the optus cable - still in the cooling off period. is that optus cable issue is limited region/ area or any user on optus cable. anybody knows optus cable performance on glen Waverley, VIC area.

    • +1

I would say glen waverly has this problem.
Don't quote me on this but with all the apartments/share houses and whatnot I'm guessing it would be extra bad in glen waverly.

      • I am in glen Waverley on optus cable. It's crap. I have the speedpack but I regularly get 5mbps down and 0.1 up. Especially in the evenings. It didn't used to be this bad. But all the free Netflix and unlimited plans has ruined their product. I'm in the process of moving to Telstra cable.

        • Do you know Telstra isn't congested on your exchange? I'm in the same boat as you.

        • @zuccs:
i dont think telstra would be congested.
their plans are expensive for what they offer and i think most people opt for ADSL2+ anyway

      • thanks for the info.

looks like Ferntree Gully area gets ok speed. but this with speed pack (+30$). wonder does that worth to send on that.

        • I did a speed test just now…
          31/0.7
That's with the speedpack. And that's the best you will ever see here in Glen Waverley. It gets worse from now until midnight, much much worse.

        • I live in Rowville and am getting pretty good speeds… not home to run test but I average 25 - 40 during peak and 60 - 95 during offpeak

      • I am in Wheelers Hill, not issue with speed since they have upgraded the exchange.

Had about 1 week of slow speed when Netflix first come to Australia.

  • Is there even Optus cable anywhere in Adelaide Metro?

    • Upgrade to NBN, much better.

      • Oh don't worry, my house is getting NBN as soon as it goes live on our sub-exchange in the next couple of months - but the vast majority of the Adelaide Metro area isn't even on the NBN map at the moment.

  • Does NOT include calls to mobiles.

    • 13/1300 calls also charged at 35c.

    • Last time I checked, optus offer a $10 call pack to home phone for unlimited mobile and $5 call pack for unlimited 13/1300. $10 mobile call pack is usually worth it but $5 13/1300 pack is not if you try to use the local access number if you can find it most of the time and just pay per call for ones you can't.

  • 24 month contract is really a turn-off. How much is the penalty if we say move house and have to break the contract?

  • Was chatting online to Optus rep and he offered me unlimited for 75pm and free install/setup a few weeks ago.
    Might be worth asking for.

  • This is my result . I was supposed to be on 100mbps package

  • I don't see anything particularly special about it. The old plan was based on $90 per month with unlimited mobile & 13/1300 not including the specials to get free FetchTV or Int'l call pack or Mobile pack or Tablet, or Netflix or whatever. Now all that is removed.

Let's say you get the $10 mobile call pack (if they still offer it) then it is up to $85 per month to make it a fair comparison. $125 setup fee amortized over 24 months is $5.20 per month or so.

    No savings to be had.

If calls were not important to you where you didn't need a mobile calls pack then you could just as well go Naked.

I would consider this more of a "pricing update" for the forums than a "Deal"

  • I have move from BigPond to Optus 100mbps cable bundle since Feb.

Bad move. REGRET it. Initially the speed was as good as BigPond (up to 110mbps in the morning, down to around 50mbps during peak time). Now, nightly speed is around 3 to 5 mbps. There were a few nights where it came down next to nothing. Called Optus to complain and was told that nothing was wrong, and that my whole area (St Albans) was congested, not just me.

Now the only hope that I have is that NBN will come to my area in 1.5 years when my contract ends.

I am going to neg this because i do not believe Optus is a bargain anymore. I am on 100mps and use to get over 100mbps during off peak and around 75mbps during peaks. As hluu stated above, i am lucky to hit 3mpbs.

Stay away from Optus if you can, i regret resigning with then in January.
