Cheaper if you book return leg separately by about $20 - screenshot

    • Not entirely correct. Depends on where your going and day.

    • I did this last time I booked with Air Asia as it was about $200 cheaper.

I booked return Melbourne to KL and then return KL to Phuket.

Just keep in mind they wouldn't let me check bags all the way through so I did have to collect baggage so it took slightly longer to get through the airport. We had plenty of time and it was better than sitting and a good use of time so I wasn't worried. But if you have very tight connections it may prove difficult.

But beware: many credit cards give you travel insurance if you pay your flights directly with them. They tend to exclude payments via payment aggregators like PayPal. Don't save $20 in booking fees only to have to spend $100 on insurance…

    • Thanks for the heads up mate, didn't realise going through PayPal would forfeit the CC travel insurance.

      • the ones i've noticed that do exclude them specifically state in the PDS that payment aggregatorss will not activate the insurance. If you're unsure then it's better to pay directly with the card but you really should read the PDS to see how much of your prepaid expenses need to be made on the card too. I have a card that says you need to pay $500 in prepaid expenses before it activates, a one way fare wouldn't do it :D

It's funny how helpful OzBagain discussions can be, after I wrote the above I decided to dig a bit further and found this one here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/122512

It really depends on the policy wording. Since my current wording is silent on this issue I decided to call Zurich (who are the insurer for Citibank). They confirmed: paying with Paypal is fine as long as the transaction can clearly be shown to be for the flight.

Also relevant in my case: if you book two one-way flights (i.e. to use different airlines), that still counts as a return flight.

Only problem: I have to trust their word on the phone, they are not willing to back this up in writing. Not a comfortable situation, knowing how insurance companies try to get out of paying…

      • Just had a claim for unexpected cancellation expenses rejected by Zurich under the CBA CC policy. Couldnt cross the border from Argentina into Brazil, couldnt as there was a strike at the border. Cost me about $1200 in additional costs to get back onto my journey so i wouldnt miss the rest of my trip.

Started reading the PDS just to see what's what - Zurich are a useless insurer, they are extremely specific with their wording, moreso than most other providers in a way that restricts payout for unexpected expenses to a very limited and specific set of circumstances. I wouldn't trust them if you're doing travel across multiple areas or for an extended period.

Sometimes you wonder what is actually included in insurance policies when there are so many exceptions and etc. It's like you need a degree in insurance policy analysis for any normal person make make sense of it all.

        • Slightly OT but I wouldn't say useless, they had a price insurance guarantee where it says the lower price of an item should be stated in a store catalog. I told them it was an online sale that's why I don't have a scan of the catalog, I just took a screenshot and sent it to them and they gave me a cashback.

        • @jobski:
          Fair,
To their credit, they did reimburse a stolen phone at the replacement cost rather than the cost price (iphone 6 increased their purchase price over the past 12 months). Unfortunately you lose $250 for excess (granted unavoidable) and a percentage for every month you've owned the product as a depreciation. Turned out losing my phone still cost me $500. Most insurers have a much lower excess and don't charge you a depreciation. Still, the transit issue made me realise that it is apparent they are writing their policy to minimise payments to the detriment of their customer base - no wonder CBA moved their insurance book away from them.

    • Oooo always wondered that. Can you provide a link?

I've got a couple of travel agent mates who swear off using insurance provided by booking with a credit card. They claim they are a lot more 'slippery' when it comes to claims and have significantly more "we don't have to pay" terms.
I always tend to lash out on travel insurance because I know how much of an idiot I can be.

      • The only part of the insurance I really care about is medical. If I lose $1000 due to ash clouds I will be annoyed but it would not change my life.

Medical costs on the other hand can be an order of magnitude or two higher. Except for excluding pre-existing conditions I did not find many exclusions in the T&C for medical.

    • Not according to Citibank. They told me that Paypal was ok. They also informed me that you only need to book the outwards travel to get coverage.

    • That's if you value CC insurance as anything-at-all.

  • I think Citibank covers you for insurance for PayPal payments of airfares as well. Always best to have it in writing though.

    • just confirmed with Citibank and yes they do cover via PayPal.

      • Awesome! Thanks I'm with Citibank… Always guessed it was a payment method like cirrus

    What about 28 degrees mastercard?

    • +1

28 Degrees MC does not have complementary insurance.

    • +1

28 degrees has shoppers protection not travel insurance.

    • Sorry i was referring to the "purchasing through paypal invalidates travel insurance" inquiry. If i use 28 Degrees Mastercard through paypal, can they choose not to give you the price protection?

      • +1

Price Protection doesn't apply for "tickets" (specified in T&Cs)

  • is $483 return to bali from sydney a good price? :\

  • is $483 return to bali from sydney a good price? :\

    • No. $219 return to Bali is a good price.

      • +1

haha I now also agree :)

  • is there an option to fly SYD-KL, stay for a few days, then fly onto Bali, back to KL then SYD?

so what I would to do is a book a fly-thru ticket and break the journey with a stop over in KL?

    • I think that you would need to do 3 bookings. Syd - Kul, Kul - Dps, Dps - Syd (Which you can choose either fly through Kul or direct). With AirAsia fly through bookings seem to be dearer too!

  • Can't seem to find sale fares Melb to KL. Has this expired?
