New Telstra Prepaid Freedom Plus Offer (Incl. More Data, More Credit, Data & Credit Rollover)

610

This offer has launched today 1/9/15.

Telstra is launching a new Pre-Paid Mobile recharge offer “Telstra Pre-Paid Freedom Plus” which will replace the current in-market Telstra Pre-Paid Freedom (Nights and Anytime Bonus) recharge offers.

Now with Roll over: Recharge your credit before it expires and you’ll roll over what’s remaining to your next recharge (once only). Note: data doesn't roll over for the $30 recharge.

Included call credit can be used for international calling and also rolls over.

If you set up an automatic recharge via credit card, it extends the expiry from 28 to 30 days.

All three recharge options include unlimited calling to Telstra mobiles.

Key takeaway! Data has increased:
- From 800MB to 1.3GB on the $30
- From 1.5GB to 3GB on the $40
- From 2GB to 4GB on the $50

Call inclusions have increased by $30, $40 and $50 respectively on each recharge.

Bear in mind that IDD rates on this offer are considerably higher than what you would expect.

Comparison with Prepaid Cap Encore:
- Has unlimited text
- Has more calling credit
- Doesn't have $70 or $100 recharge options
- Has 200MB more data on the $50 after using a browse pack on the Cap Encore (which would also reduce call credit)
- Has almost twice as much data on the $40 (3GB > 1.6GB) after using a browse pack on the Cap Encore
- Has the same amount of data on the $30 (1.3GB) after using two browse packs on the Cap Encore
- Same expiry if you use a credit card to recharge.
- Doesn't include ULTD calls & text to any standard Australian number between 18:00-06:00

Note for the unfamiliar, Cap Encore is no longer in-market. The browse packs do not work with Freedom Plus, only with Beyond Talk, Long-Life and Simplicity.

You can judge for yourself but it appears that this offer is far better than Prepaid Cap Encore. More or same data, unlimited text, unlimited telstra calls, data rollover.

  • I wonder if its better than encore..

    • Looks like it is, especially on the $40 recharge.

      • +3

I think in your comparison you forgot to state that Encore (or Freedom Night) for that matter, has unlimited standard calls to mobiles and landlines after 6PM, which this new plan lacks of.

        • Fixed

      • This plan also doesn't include international calling being billed out of your cap, as is the case with Encore. It means I can call OS without being very conscious of either additional charges or eating into my recharge principal.

I also stack Encore plus packs when I envisage higher data use, such as holidays. Recharge -> 29 days in -> Buy Plus Pack -> 1 day -> Recharge: 3.0GB + 800MB + $50 (for another 3.0GB plus pack if needed).

        • That's incorrect, it does include IDD out of your cap credit.

      • Is this offer still valid the website has changed. 1.3GB-$30 2GB-$40 2.5GB-$50???

        • Yes, please see my edit at the top of my post.

    • WARNING: Excess Data costs $2 / MB (sic)

      Hardly a Deal, as Expected

      • +1

How much is excess data on Cap Encore?

  • Is there a max $ for rollover

    • +1

No, no maximum. But freedom credit and data only rolls over once, and the $30 doesn't roll over data. Your core credit will still roll over the way it always has.

      • I am confused with Freedom Credits and Core credits. If I start with a $30 sim on Prepaid Freedom and I do a $40 recharge on Simplicity before it expires(say I didn't use the original $30), I should have $70 after 1st recharge. I recharge $40 again on Simplicity, I should have $110. Am I understanding you right? Is Core credits Recharge credits?

  • So there's no more option for unlimited calls in the evening.

  • meh

  • Data rollover doesn't apply to $30 recharge according to the table.

  • +7

what's this 28 days business??? Why isn't it credit for a month??

  • +1

i dont understand this whole '28 days expiry' thing. makes totally no sense

    • +8

It turns a year into 13 'months' instead of 12. Tel$tra at work.

By setting up an automatic credit card recharge, it automatically extends your credit expiry to 30 days instead.

      • +1

28 days sucks but thanks for letting me know about the auto credit card thing. i'd prefer not to auto bill but at least there is an option to give you the standard 30 days.

edit: my encore cap currently gives 31 days :(. still tempted to switch to this though because of how much more data it gives

        • well virgin mobile has always been 28 ways, and they don't even have the additional few days extension if you setup automatic recharge ..

      • I'm pretty sure that automatic credit card recharge would extend it to 31 days on 31-day months would it not? considering that it is essentially the same billing platform as Boost which does that.

        • Correct.

    • +3

Makes sense to the carriers because they get 13 months out of you instead of 12

      • +7

i meant that it seems so misleading to advertise a recharge for a 'month' but only provide 28 days

  • +1

Bear in mind that IDD rates on this offer are considerably higher(www.telstra.com.au) than what you would expect.

Bear in mind those are not AUD prices, but "Telstra funny money", designed to confuse you.
Simplicity plan has real AUD charges, and they can be obscene too.]

Has the same amount of data on the $30 (1.3GB) after using two browse packs

Isn't that 1.3GB without the browse packs, which add 700MB and 200MB for 2.2GB total?

    • Freedom offers can't use browse packs. It's comparing Encore (with Browse Packs) with Freedom Plue (no Browse Packs).

    • +4

I don't think you can use "real credit" to add browse packs anymore. The Cap Encore was the last prepaid offer you could do that on, which is why so many OzBargainers are still using it, and why people are comparing the new offering to Cap Encore.

My understanding is that the new plan comes with 1.3GB of Data on a $30 recharge, with no option to add browse packs apart from paying for them with actual money,

Cap Encore had 400MB of data on a $30 recharge, and allowed you to purchase browse packs with the $30 real credit you had, allowing you to have 1.3GB of data in total.

      • +2

Ah, thanks for clarifying that. Its hard to keep track.

      • As stated in the OP Browse Plus Packs are available for Beyond Talk, Long Life, Simplicity and Encore.

      • There's an undocumented option of using $25 of real credit to get 1.5GB of data that lasts for 14 days. But you can only get it by using the chat or calling up, not available via the app.

What I'm doing now is recharging $30 a month getting 1.3GB / month, using the 1.3GB in 21 days, buying the 1.5GB data pack on day 22 which lasts me until day 7 of the following month.

So over 2 months I'm getting 1.3 + 1.3 + 1.5 = 4.1GB in total or 2.05GB / month. The only catch is that you have to vary the rate of your usage.

Using the data that comes with the recharge 1300/21 = 61.9MB / day
Using the data that comes with the data pack 1500/14 = 107.1MB / day

  • +1

What can you do with the rollover credits?

  • I thought the BROWSE PACKS were only available on the Beyond Talk plans.

On the Beyond Talk Plans, Browse Packs can be paid for out of Account Credit, i.e. $30 BT Plan, get $30 of credit to spend on Browse Pack or Text Pack etc.

If you use the "Freedom 28 day plans", Browse Packs must be paid for out of cold hard cash. Unless that has now changed for the "Freedom Plus" plans.

  • -1

Can the Recharge credit be used to purchase an additional datapack inside the one recharge? For example, does a $50 recharge give you the included 4GB and the ability to purchase a $49 datapack for a total of 7GB?

That's how my existing plan functions (Weekend+ - for a total of 5GB after 2GB included value and a 3GB data pack) but I think there were some plans in the past year where the recharge credit couldn't be used for add-on packs which forced the user to pay again for additional data.

The datapack pricing page states "Not compatible with Telstra Pre-Paid Freedom offer.". Not sure if "Freedom Offer" refers to "Freedom Plus" or not.

  • +2

Still on the Encore, I usually get by with $20 for 700mb Browse Pack. Rollover the remaining $10 per month for In app purchases and subscriptions, or save the $10 lots to spend overseas on a Roaming pack. If this new plan allows for Google Play purchases, then I might switch.

    • +2

It does work for Google Play billing.

      • iphones do not use google play.
what use come out of this with an iphone?

        • He was answering the person above, whi specifically asked about google play.

        • @pood:

          Creditme2u
          GooglePlay

what else is the credit good for?

        • @chinezejew:For this plan: Recharge Credit can be used for talk/text to standard national, international, satellite and premiums numbers (eg 19xx numbers), operator assisted calls (eg most 12xx numbers), diverted calls, CreditMe2U® and international roaming. Data charged per KB

  • So does the recharge credit expire within 28 days? Or does that continue on as usual?
Also, can the recharge credit still be used for other things as per the wiki (creditme2u, mobile foxtel, google play etc)?

    • Yep recharge credit can still be used for all the usual things.

      • Great.
But does it expire after 28 days, rollover once, or rollover forever as it currently does?

        • +1

Rolls over forever as it always has.

      • -3

No it can't be used for ALL the usual things, it can't be used for any Plus Packs , ie Browse Plus packs

        • +2

Note the question was 'other' things. :)

  • +1

Should note the recharge credits that has unlimited accumulative rollover can be used on Google Play.

That is if you're on the $30 plan, as long as you don't use that $30 credit it gets rolled over and over until you spend it on something… that something includes Google play.

The rollover once only applies to the additional Freedom Credit you get

  • +1

I might be blind but I could not see any mention of the rollover of the recharge credit!

    • That's what I'm worried about.

  • Does the rollover freedom credit and data get used before the new credit, or do you have to use the credit/data from your latest recharge before you can use the rolled over credit/data?

    • I assume it is pooled together into one data pack after each recharge.
Eg. You have 0.6 GB remaining, and you recharge on the $40 pack, you will receive the standard 3 GB, and in addition to that, 0.6 GB from the rollover. Therefore, you will have 3.6 GB to use in 28 days, expiring at the same time.

      • +1

That would seem to be logical and inline with how things currently work on Telstra prepaid.

The thing that makes me wonder about this is where it says that "Freedom Credit and data rolls over onto your next recharge only." If they pool it into a single bucket, how are they going to stop you accumulating data from more than just 1 month?

e.g. If you recharge at $40 but only use 1GB each month and it's pooled, you could end up with 7GB to use in your 3rd month. If data can only roll over for a maximum of 1 month, the maximum that you should be able to get in a single month would be 6GB (if you recharged previously with $40 and didn't use any data and then recharged again with $40)

Will be interesting to see how things actually work out - it wouldn't surprise me if the actual implementation didn't follow the official rules and allowed you to roll over indefinitely - since this sort of thing has already happened in the past. As an example, on the really old prepaid offers, credit expiry was cumulative - i.e. if you were on long life and ran out of credit with 6 months expiry remaining and you did a recharge which should give you 12 months expiry, you would end up with an expiry 18 months into the future. According to the terms and conditions, it wasn't supposed to be possible to extend your expiry to more than 2 years into the future. I've got a prepaid mobile with credit expiring in 2026 which contradicts this!

If you can roll over credit/data indefinitely, this would make this offer pretty awesome!

        • Especially if a CM2U extends the expiry of Freedom Credit or Data. I doubt it, but it might happen…

    • I would like to know this also. I am taking a guess that being Telstra, they would make you use the current month's inclusions before using the rollover, but that is a big assumption.

  • So the calls are 89c per minute + 39c connection?

    • Yes, and deducted from your Freedom Credit (i.e. $250/$550/$1000)

  • Do you keep the recharge amount in real dollars as you did with Encore?

For example with Encore you would recharge $30, receive all the benefit of the encore plan, plus still have the $30 to spend on extra packs etc.

  • I am currently on freedom with anytime. Will I be migrated over ourr can I stay?

    • You can stay for as long as you like. Don't see why you would but yep your choice :)

      • +1

Thanks I just assumed I must be getting boned as normally happens when plans change but I think I am wrong this time so will probably move over

    • You can always stay on your current offer.

Once Freedom Plus offers are active, if you do switch, it's likely that you can't change back to Freedom Nights/Anytime.

      • That's correct.

  • How does this work with international roaming etc. Must we use 'real' money to buy overseas browse packs then… hmm. If so, I'd stay with encore…

    • International Browse Plus Packs can currently be bought on the Freedom Anytime/Nights offers. I imagine that won't change.

      • Hmm. What I mean is can I buy it with stored credit as I can on the grandfathered Encore plan… or do you have to pay with real money…

I don't travel O/S often, but when I do I like to use stored credit that I find accumulates rather easily, albeit slowly.

Currently nearly maxxed out at 387.50 dollars… but going across the ditch to NZ next week… will come in handy being able to spend a bit of accumlated stored credit ($160) to get 600MB of data… that'll help me navigate using google maps etc… and whatsapp-ing etc…

I'd switch if I can still do that with the new plan… but I'm guessing I can't. It says at the top of this page that you can't buy browse packs with the credit… wanted to check if that included International Browse Plus Packs… which most likely it does :-( - i.e. you have to pay extra 'real' money to buy International Browse Plus Packs… etc.

My apologies if I came across as confusing… I think it was me confusing myself.

  • Can you transfer the actual recharge credit as Creditme2U to another Telstra number as you do with Cap Encore ?

    • My guess is yes.

  • +6

i don't think these new plans are better, the good part about previous plans were the 6pm-6am free calls to ANYONE in australia, none of this telstra mobile only rubbish…

    • +1

Fair enough, for some people that represents great value. Anecdotally though, 95% of people I've activated sims for choose the anytime bonus over the nights bonus on the current Freedom offer.

    • Same here. But if you don't make lots of calls like some people, the new Freedom plus is better

Alternatively you can do a Facetime/WhatsApp/Facebook/OtherChatApp call through data or Wi-Fi if you are at home. But the other party will use their data for the call too if they are not on Wi-Fi

I think I'll stick to the Freedom Night

  • I activated my starter SIM with bonus data but it expired in 7 days. The rest of 800MB has expired in 28 days

  • I am someone who rarely ever calls. 750MB-1 GB of data is more than enough for me. Which plan/prepaid should I go for?

    • One SIM or two?

      • One preferably, but I wouldn't mind swapping every now and again so long as I can keep the same number.

    • is 100minutes of calls enough?
      3G speeds. Telstra network
      Unlimited Texts
      http://www.boost.com.au/$20-ultra-sim-prepaid-plan.aspx
      1GB + (500mb every sunday)

  • If I am ending up with $30 of credit at the end of my 28 days is there a way to transfer this over to Google as credit?

  • +1

Just keeps getting better and better to be honest, keep up the good work Telstra.

  • -6

Continue to boycott Telstra, because of their arrogant moron sales rep. What did they say? There were 20% of families in the area had no adsl service so my neighbourhood of 200+ working families deserved no adsl service either!

    • +2

Not good. If you like, im happy to make sure the feedback goes to the right person. my email is [email protected] thanks

  • +1

Pity the free calls to telstra landlines at night is stopping. We call family interstate most nights on their landlines.

    • +1

      Skype etc? Also try MyNetFone

    • You can stay on freedom nights, you don't need to move.

  • +1

Hi guys. Thanks for your interest in our prepaid mobiles. We haven't actually launched any new offers. But we'll make sure to let you know as soon as we can when we do so next.

    • Gerd! Welcome to the land of the professionals ;)

      • thanks :)

    • +2

It's not often an executive director mingles with the tight arses ;-)
Gerd, could i ask you to reconsider to keep the freedom nights bonuses, i can't say i know everyone on Telstra, but almost everyone i know chose the free nights option

      • +4

I love a bargain like the next person :)
Thanks for the feedback, I'll pass it on to the Prepaid team for consideration.

        • +2

          Thanks. Speak soon.

  • +1

So from what I have read from the above comments, it appears that the Freedom credit gets used before the recharge credit, which would therefore allow the maximum amount of credits eligible for google play purchases to be rolled over. So I've got the following scenario with $40 recharges each month for 4 months, please let me know if I've got it wrong anywhere because I'm somewhat confused about the rollover once thing.

    Month 1 balances
$40 recharge credit (eligible for google play)
    $510 freedom credit
    3GB data
during the month $100 of calls/sms were made and 1 GB was used

    Month 2 balances
    $80 recharge credit
    $920 freedom credit
    5GB data
during the month $100 of calls/sms were made and 1GB was used

    Month 3 balances
    $120 recharge credit
    $1,330 freedom credit
    7GB data
during the month $100 of calls/sms were made and 1GB was used as well as $110 spent at the play store

    Month 4 balances
    $50 recharge credit
    $1,740 freedom credit
    9GB data
