New Telstra Prepaid Freedom Plus Offer (Incl. More Data, More Credit, Data & Credit Rollover)

610

This offer has launched today 1/9/15.

Telstra is launching a new Pre-Paid Mobile recharge offer “Telstra Pre-Paid Freedom Plus” which will replace the current in-market Telstra Pre-Paid Freedom (Nights and Anytime Bonus) recharge offers.

Now with Roll over: Recharge your credit before it expires and you’ll roll over what’s remaining to your next recharge (once only). Note: data doesn't roll over for the $30 recharge.

Included call credit can be used for international calling and also rolls over.

If you set up an automatic recharge via credit card, it extends the expiry from 28 to 30 days.

All three recharge options include unlimited calling to Telstra mobiles.

Key takeaway! Data has increased:
- From 800MB to 1.3GB on the $30
- From 1.5GB to 3GB on the $40
- From 2GB to 4GB on the $50

Call inclusions have increased by $30, $40 and $50 respectively on each recharge.

Bear in mind that IDD rates on this offer are considerably higher than what you would expect.

Comparison with Prepaid Cap Encore:
- Has unlimited text
- Has more calling credit
- Doesn't have $70 or $100 recharge options
- Has 200MB more data on the $50 after using a browse pack on the Cap Encore (which would also reduce call credit)
- Has almost twice as much data on the $40 (3GB > 1.6GB) after using a browse pack on the Cap Encore
- Has the same amount of data on the $30 (1.3GB) after using two browse packs on the Cap Encore
- Same expiry if you use a credit card to recharge.
- Doesn't include ULTD calls & text to any standard Australian number between 18:00-06:00

Note for the unfamiliar, Cap Encore is no longer in-market. The browse packs do not work with Freedom Plus, only with Beyond Talk, Long-Life and Simplicity.

You can judge for yourself but it appears that this offer is far better than Prepaid Cap Encore. More or same data, unlimited text, unlimited telstra calls, data rollover.

On $40 recharge you get $550 freedom credit not $510, so from your example

      Month 2 balances
      $80 recharge credit
      $1000 freedom credit ($450 rollover+$550)
      5GB data (2GB rollover+3GB)
during the month $100 of calls/sms were made and 1GB was used

      Month 3 balances
$120 recharge credit (1 mth rollover rule does not apply to recharge credit)
$1000 freedom credit ($450+$550 previous $450 rollover is forfeited)
5GB data (2GB+3GB same as above reason)
during the month $100 of calls/sms were made and 1GB was used

Month 4 will be the same except your recharge credit will keep growing, until it hits the ceiling of $2000 iirc

      • If you look at the critical information it splits it into two parts with $40 being the recharge credit, which is eligible for play store usage and $510 freedom credit with only applies to calls and text.

I guess I wanted to see if anyone can look at my example and confirm whether or not the rollover happens like that or is it more like what deepanshkwatra has got below

        • Freedom credit and data should only rollover once (but it may work differently in practice), but recharge credit will continue to rollover after that. The table of inclusions has since been taken down from the site and is now showing information for the old plan, but Freedom Plus should have $550 of freedom credit.

        • On the current freedom you get $510 funny money + $40 real money
With the new freedom plus you get $550 funny money + $40 real money
The CIS you're referring to applies to the current one

        if i have a $30 starter kit
how can i active to $40 plan?

        • gerdschenkel, please assist!

        • You can't.

  • Rollover is once only/1 month only. Month 1 n 2 theory is correct but month 3 will include:

    6 GB of data
    $80 recharge credit
    $1020 freedom credit

I believe this is the maximum rollover credit you can get.

Dodo mobile has lightning fast unlimited data.

    • On which network?

      • Dodo is on Optus.

        • All of Optus' network or a limited part of it?

        • +2

@sween64: All of Optus, they don't do the Telstra "wholesale" way AFAIK.

      • optus

    • There are only standard 4G plans, where did you see an "unlimited" 4G plan?

    • Where do they give unlimited data?

    • On which plan?

  • +2

Nooo. Don't take away the unlimited calls after 6pm……..

Unlimited calls on Optus and Vodafone is much more enticing.

  • -4

Unlimited calls to anyone after 6 is much better. Don't see any advantage for $30 Only small gains on data allowance not worth sacrificing free calls. Unless you don't make any calls and even that encore cap is better with data top ups.

    Sorry Telstra you have failed

Bring back the free calls and put it on 30 days expiry rather than this dodgy practice 28 days. It means they are charging you 13 times rather than 12 times a year with prepaid. That's just greed.

So screw you Telstra along with this poor government on NBN, GST on importing goods, owning all the ADSL infrastructure and stuffing every one up.

You have done nothing good except 4GX. Even that it's darn expensive to use.

this isn't a better plan you are just playing with words. I laughed hard only 1 month rollover, might as well NOT offer it. That would at least save yourself a better reputation and image.

I believe you cannot switch back to old freedom plan once you get on to this same like encore. Pathetic…

    • -1

Funny ppl cant accept the truth. New plan doesn't have much to offer. Must be sales rep negging.

Do I care one bit? not at all

      • Only caring just enough to let us all know how much you don't care.

  • ULTD calls

Cut your crap out Telstra, you've already been spotted using ULTD and unlimited interchangeably, that's how you get a class action lawsuit against you. I've archived the pages using archive.is and archive.org just in case.

    $40 - 618 mins - ~10 hours
    $50 - 1123 mins - ~ 18.7 hours

Edit: In one of the comments above they mention a 39c "connection fee".

    For 2 minute calls:

    $2.17/call

    $30 - 115 calls - ~ 3.8 hours
    $40 - 253 calls - ~ 8.4 hours
    $50 - 460 calls - ~ 15.3 hours

  • +2

does it still have X amount of telstra credit eg: $40 for $40 telstra credit for google play or to purchase other stuff?

  • If I didn't know any better, I'd say telstra is shaping up for free_ Data Nights campaign.
Why else would it move timeless talk bonus out of the way? After VHA, telstra's turn .

I also recently registered a starter pack, one that all inclusions went to waste on. First advanced communication forewarned 4 Days left but became subsequently apparent this message was delivered stale as i found all expired in-a day later. This would have been a Freedom nights plan :(…but I can txt 1 dollar to it and I'm golden for 14 days, enewable perpetually no?

  • is this live yet?

  • Merged from New Telstra Prepaid Freedom Plus with Data and Credit Rollover

    $30 recharge - 1.3 GB +$250 worth of national+$30 recharge credit
    $40 recharge - 3 GB + $750 worth of calls+ $40 recharge credit
    $50 recharge - 4 GB + $1500 worth of calls+ $50 recharge credit
All these type of recharges contains UNLIMTED calls to Telstra numbers plus unlimted sms's to other local carriers

Recharge credit can also be used to make international calls.. See the note below

Note: Recharge Credit can be used for talk/text to standard national, international, satellite and premiums numbers (eg 19xx numbers), operator assisted calls (eg most 12xx numbers), diverted calls, CreditMe2U® and international roaming. Data charged per KB

    • The big Q here, will the recharge credit (30, 40 and 50) be absorbed into the call credit (250, 750 and 1500) ?
Which means no more value for Google Play and cme2u ?

    • Does data actually rollover continuously or is it like the scam virgin tried to pull where they only roll it over "once" and then the next month that roll-over is eliminated?

      • Seems like it may be

Any unused Call Credit and data will then roll over and expire at the end of the next 28 day period.

    • Previously posted here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/208322

Recharge credit can't be used for browse packs, but can for Google Play and CU2Me

    • The description regarding plus packs is incorrect.

      As per https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/plu… it says:

"Note: Plus Packs cannot be applied to Pre-Paid Freedom Plus. Customers on Pre-Paid Freedom Plus cannot access pay as you go (PAYG) data from Recharge Credit or Call Credit."

In regards to Google Play, it also says as per https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/pre… :

"FREEDOM PLUS OFFER: Some usage is excluded, such as calls/text to satellite numbers and premium numbers (eg 19xx numbers), operator assisted calls (eg 12xx numbers), content charges, diversions, pay as you go (PAYG) data and all use while overseas. Your Call Credit and data expires after 28 days, unless you recharge again before your credit expiry date. Any unused Call Credit and data will then roll over and expire at the end of the next 28 day period."

And I assume Google Play is considered as "content charges".

    • You can also add additional data with top up packs https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/plu…
      $10 for 1G and $20 for 2.5G

So if you recharge with $50 and add a $20 top up pack you get 4+2.5=6.5G for $70, effectively.

    • So recharge credit can be used for me2u and for purchasing overseas data packs?

      • Yes.

  • Folks, this has launched today. Some of the info in the "deal" above may be outdated / incorrect.
Please refer to the offer page here for details https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/pre…

    • Good work - the new offer looks awesome - I'll be switching from the previous Freedom Anytime offer ASAP!

Not only are the call credits on the $40 and $50 recharges significantly higher, data also rolls over on the $30 recharge.

Data top ups are also better - being valid for 28 days now and it looks like you now get recharge credit which you didn't get before.

    • +3

The page only mentioned that call credit and data will roll over. Does that mean recharge credit won't roll over?

    • Mate are you able to confirm that this new Freedom Plus still allows the purchase of international roaming browse plus packs with recharge credit? Don't want to lose this option. Seems that ME2U credit can still be transferred to other Telstra Prepaid on the Freedom Plus but can't find anything definitive about the international roaming.

      • +1

        Just had a chat with Telstra, and got the following;

"You can still buy roaming data packs using your credits, the only thing this offer is not designed for is the local packs."

So this actually looks like a great deal!

        • Thanks. Yes that was the last piece of the puzzle for me. Didn't think anything would improve on encore but this is a better fit for me.

    • Dear Gerdschenkel,

      Please assist

I would like to join the Freedom $40plan.
I had purchased a $30starter pack last week from a retailer (prior to telstra's new prepaid offers)
The retailer refuses to refund the startersim pack as "it is our policy to to refund prepaid products"
They have directed me back to Telstra.

I would like to purchase a $10prepaid recharge voucher; and have it added to my $30starter pack; gaining $40value and being able to be activated on my first month with the new $40freedom plan.

I plan to approach Telstra live chat with this $10 recharge voucher as soon as I am ready to port on Friday 4/9/15.

I can't seem to find any info saying that it doesn't allow us to increase value and have a $30sim pack commenced on a $40 or $50plan.

      Can you please confirm?

    • Hi, can you tell me if with recharge credit you can buy data packs? Or if I do credit me2u? I am thinking of switching husband on $30 a month. Will he be able to buy 1gb data with recharge credit or me2u that I can credit to his account?

      Thanks

  • +2

I transitioned over to this plan this morning and my recharge credit appears to have rolled over also, previous month $50 Freedom post plan change & $40 top-up now have a credit remaining of $90 with call credit of $750 and data allowance of 3GB.

    • +1

Hi inaroundroom, did your expiry date extend 28 days or 30 days? I think some here are would like to know :)

  • I can't find anywhere in writing that if you setup an auto recharge, it extends the expiry to 30 days. Can anyone confirm that this is the case??

    • I don't recall Telstra ever clearly explaining that scheduled recharges have a 1 month expiry other than in a Crowdsource post. I think you'd be pretty safe to assume it extends for a whole month. Not sure if this is holds any importance anymore as you can't use it to buy a Browse plus pack.

      • Cheers fatty!

Then I guess you set the auto recharge to be on the 30th of every month?

        • +2

It need not be any particular day of the month.

For example I have a scheduled recharge in Telstra My Account set to 18th of each month.
I see in history it was recharged 19/08 and reports expiry 18/09.
It is almost like prior to expiry being performed the system checks if you have an upcoming recharge planned and gives grace in expiry until the next scheduled recharge.

I believe this also works for the Freedom 28-day expiry plans that were grandfathered today.

Prior to this if you wanted to conform to the strict 30-day schedule recharge was to perform a scheduled Bpay with your bank.

  • What I liked about Telstra Prepaid was that it was around half the cost of a non-prepaid offer. While rollover is nice, I much prefer data sharing between users - you can have one service with heaps of data and another on with very little - moving a lot more value around than rolling remaining data to the next month. You can't share on prepaid.

We have two mobiles in our family, I use around 1.5 - 2GB data / month (little calls and TXT) and wife around 1GB / month (about 200 TXT and 120 minutes/month). Credit U2ME has been helpful to redistribute the surplus recharge credit from her account to mine to purchase browse plus packs. It was a way of sharing data that is no longer available (recharge credit can't be sued to buy browse plus packs). So the offering isn't appealing.

We're on our 4th year of Encore and managing data allowance is becoming quite onerous and the volume of data on offer is no longer sufficient. Last year I'd happily stream audio to/from work on most days, but now there isn't enough available data for that. I began shopping and holiding out for details of Freedom Plus. What was appealing with moving on from Encore is removing that onerous management effort required to keep the service running.

We normally recharge $30/month on each service, although for the past 6 months the average has been $35 (due to occasional $40 recharges and premature recharge). The improved scheduled recharge which recharges on the day of month for a whole month introduced last year helped my to stay on the offer. So I've looked at what $70 can jointly get, and services where I would have around 3-4GB and 1.5GB for the wife with a bit of head room.

I think I will move to $50 Telstra Casual M and take advantage of the Double Data offer (5GB) that allows for 10GB to be pooled across two services for $100/month. While I'd prefer to pay $35/month (which would be Spintel) I'm happy to pay $50/user if there is value and headroom (data pooling, heaps of data and Telstra network).

Providor, $, GB, $/per GB, Comments

    • +1

If I was you, I'd do a $40 recharge each month on the Freedom Plus offer and a $30 recharge on the Freedom Plus offer for the other mobile.

According to your current use, that would be plenty for only $70 per month. Roll over would help a bit with heavy months and if you did ever run out of data, you would have $30 extra in your pocket each month to spend on data top ups at the times when you really need it.

      • True, and as Golfcrank from Whirlpool confirmed with Telstra customer service - rollover credit from the previous month is consumed first, then any bonuses.

So while 1.3GB doesn't offer much headroom, with that method of rollover there should be ample.

  • +3

Noticed they've changed it to say that the $30 recharge does get data rollover now.

  • @macmine says 28 days for some reason I couldn't setup auto popup…

    • Thanks mate :) Looks like Pab23q has some extra info right below…

  • Chatting to telstra now, and I asked the rep if the 28 day expiry increases to 30 days if you setup a direct debit payment. Response below:

"Yes Pab. You are correct. If you setup a direct debit with your credit card the expiry increases to 30 days :)"

    And google play etc..

"Yes that's correct. Purchasing apps from Google play and international data packs, you can us all your credits :) Sound so good! :)"

I am going to stay on $30 Freedom evening. I received a message saying "Good news! Your extra 500MB to use in Aus over 28 days is here to stay for as long as you choose to recharge $30+ on Pre-Paid Freedom"
So basically I still get 1.3gb unlimited calls/sms after 6 pm and $225 anytime.
The only thing less is the bonus credit, but last month I only used about $100 anyway.

    • Same here Fozzie.

Still staying on the Freedom plan with only $30 recharge.

Never go over bonus credit anyways, and the data stays the same.

Free calls from 6pm-6am is the bigger bonus to reduce my bonus credit.

  • Guys help me out here please, I'm tossing up between this and the Amaysim deal as I'm on an old TPG 1GB for $20 plan. To me, the Play store credit could be a huge bonus, but I'm really not understanding from this post/comments how it works. A few simple questions:
    1) Say I get the $30 plan, does that mean I can spend $30 on the Play store every month?
    2) Does it add to your existing wallet/balance or do you select it as a separate type of credit when you purchase?
    3) Is it just for buying new apps, or can you use it for in-app purchases or the google music service for example?

Apologies if I'm just being dense here!

    • +1

Im not sure about Freedom Plus, but I'm using Freedom Night currently and should be similar…

      1. Yes, $30 plan can spend $30 on the Play store every month.

      2. I won't add to your Google wallet/balance, it's another type of payment like credit card and voucher.

      3. It can be use for in-app purchases and google music service

  • Can you set periodic recharge to be from Paypal? or does it have to be credit card?

  • +1

I will definitely stay on Freedom Night same as fozzie, I couldn't see much difference for $30 recharge…

    Freedom Night
    1.3GB Data
    $30 Recharge Credit
    $220 Call Credit
Unlimited calls & Txt to All (6pm to 6am)

    Freedom Plus
    1.3GB Data
    $30 Recharge Credit
    $250 Call Credit
Unlimited calls to Telstra + Unlimited Txt to All

    Credit Roll Over

  • Can somebody please help me out.. I have just signed up for the $40 3gb freedom plus which is for my iphone. How do I make use of my recharge credit for google play? I do have an android tablet (wifi only). I am not sure how to set it up. Any help would be highly appreciated!

    • Hmm that's a tricky one.

You could try hotspotting, but I'm fairly sure that every time you'll want to buy something you'll need to take your Telstra sim out and plug it into an android phone to make the purchase.

Sorry! Not very convenient I know.

    • If you pop sim in an android handset you can set up from there. Then sim doesn't need to be inserted again. I did that and my sim is in Iphone 5

  • I wish they had a $35 level, with 2GB and $500. A better match for what I'm currently on, but without increasing the cost significantly. In particular, we've got two phones, both on $28/mo Telechoice plans. To move both over, we pretty much need to spend an extra $24/mo or $288 a year.

I'm certainly considering it, as it will allow me to buy new apps and music regularly, and get 4G services finally.

    • With the new roll over feature, you can effectively get that for $35 per month by alternating between $40 and $30 recharges!

      • True, but can you do that with the auto-recharge to get the 30 days?

    • As a possible solution you could look to sell some of the Telstra Prepaid credit you get each month
You should be able to get at least 50 cents on the dollar (net), so if you offloaded say half your credit on each phone you could get the $40 plan for $30, higher included limits and still with $20 credit per month for apps and music, Telstra 4G services (assuming your phone supports it) etc.
If you do this, make sure you setup your voicemail collection as per the wiki so you don't waste credit getting voicemails. Takes a few minutes to set up but so worth it in the long run.

  • Auto-recharged today, the 4th, credit is expiring in 28 days (2/10)
Chatted with customer service via 24x7 chat.
He insisted the credit always expires in 28 days until I asked him to look at

    https://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Announcements/Telstra…

He said he will extend my credit, but I don't know if he will ask the programmer to implement the change to the new freedom plus system.

  • nvm

  • Is anyone else on Boost thinking of switching to the Freedom Plus $40 plan?

With Boost I pay $40 but I don't really use or need unlimited calls. I make an average number of calls mostly to Telstra numbers.

If my understanding is correct, with the new Freedom Plus $40 plan I still get:

    • 28 days to use my credit, extended to 1 month if I choose to top up automatically by credit card.
    • 3 GB of data to use per month, except that it will be 4G speed rather than 3G as with Boost
    • Unlimited calls to Telstra mobiles (family, girlfriend, etc)
    • $750 of credit to use for other stuff (friends on Optus, 13/1800 numbers etc)

And as a bonus, I can also rollover credit and spend the $40 recharge credit on other stuff (Google Play)? I'm not too fussed about these points however.

    • Yes You are correct. The recharge money can be spent on different things, for example office 365, magazines etc… If you top up each month that credit doesn't expire.

      • So to confirm: the recharge money you are talking about rolls over more than just one month so long as you recharge? Or does it only roll to the next one month like the data and call credits?

  • Hi, I'm travelling overseas soon and I have one of those $30 starter kits purchased for $1. Can someone tell me if I can do this:

    1. Activate the SIM and get all the Freedom Plus inclusions for the $30 recharge.
    2. Buy a recharge voucher for $29 at a supermarket and add credit. I have a gift card to use up hence supermarket.
    3. Use the $29 credit to buy a International Roaming Browse Plus Pack with 100MB data as described here: https://www.telstra.com.au/international-roaming/mobile-broa… 100MB should be enough, I would use hotspots whenever possible. The countries I want are covered.
    4. Install the 24x7 app to monitor my data usage overseas.

    TIA.

    • +1

You don't even need the recharge voucher as you can use most of the $30 recharge credit included when you activate your starter kit to purchase the International Roaming Browse Plus Pack.

      • Great thanks. I was under the impression that the recharge credit was only available the next month.

  • Does anyone know if international SMS will be included in the Call Credit or just the Recharge Credit?

    • Call credit IIRC.

  • Just posted a poll to see what the community reckons was/is the best pre-paid offer - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/212454

  • Guys, Thank you for all your comments. I'm on Cap Encore for the past 3 years ($50 or $70 recharge depends on the month). I'm contemplating if I should move to Freedom Plus. But I'm being a bit hesitant because I'm unable to find a document that depicts all the entitlements. (1) Will I still have access to international roaming browser packs? (2) I get only 800 MB data for $50 recharge. But sometimes I get bonus data and have the option to purchase more data using my Cap Credit. Will I be able to continue this? (3) Is IDD calls included in my standard credit? Thank you!! :)

    • I believe allot of this has already been covered. In any case you for certain will not be able to purchase data cap using your recharge credit.
