Look at the cheeky price increase they did. 226->250

and there has been one sold since they increased the price. What a hot bargain…

  • I am going to have Telstra Cable at my place, and telstra suggested me to buy their modem: Telstra gate way or Gate way max.
Can i get this Asus RT-AC68U Router, or are there other options for me guys?

    • if what you need is a modem, then this thing is not for you…you need the DSL-AC68U which is a modem-router. I've been using the RT-AC68U(just a router, not a modem) for over a year now and couldnt be any happier, its great and loaded with fancy features, totally recommended if you are on NBN.

    • For cable, you'll need a cable modem. I don't know if there are many integrated cable/modems for routers, typically that is more of an ADSL thing.

You could still use this - plug it into the modem to provide multiple LAN connections and wireless for your devices.

Re: NBN, this would would as your only device if you get FTTP (fibre to the premises), where NBN will install an NTD (network terminating device) in your house. I believe because you have cable you will get NBN HFC at some point. I haven't seen any info published by NBN on what the modem/NTD arrangement will be for HFC, will look it up and reply later if I can find anything.

    • Isn't the modem usually provided free if you go on contract for 24 months?

Anyway, buy the modem from Telstra as you're getting cable internet and not adsl or nbn. But if it is similar to when I had Optus cable then imo, it's best to not get the 2-in-1 cable modem with wifi and get the standard cable modem (with no wifi) instead. Then you buy a separate router like the Asus router in this deal to plug into the cable modem.

      • The cost is $216! Its not free: https://www.telstra.com.au/connectedhome/enhancements/getwif…
So i just wonder if I can get it somewhere else, same price but better or cheaper but the same quality.
        Please give me some advice.

        Thanks heap.

        • AFAIK, the easiest and most convenient is to buy the modem from Telstra since they need to register the modem's MAC address to your account before you start using it to get cable internet.

Gateway Max is excellent but the custom Telstra firmware is stuffed, is auto-updated under Telstra's control and can cause problems when retaining config from previous version (or restoring config from a backup).

I use it as a gateway. I had to turn off the DHCP server and use my old WRT54GL for DHCP instead because the Gateway Max doesn't honour static DHCP address reservations and just serves up whatever it feels like instead of the reserved address.

You can turn off the NAT gateway, WIFI etc. and just use it as a WAN connection/modem, connecting an existing WAN port of a second router to it instead. However as I see it that wastes the very good WIFI capabilities. I don't need anything other than this gateway and my old WRT54GL running tomato and I have everything I need using it as intended.

      • Thank you for the infor, Syousef.
I have another silly question: Have many devices can connect to this modem at the same time?
I was told by one of telstra staff that it can connect up 10 devices? Does it mean that if i connect 11th device, it will disconnect one of the ten devices? Or it will cause network unstable?

Please help me with this if you dont mind, thanks.

        • I don't know if they're talking about WIFI there but so far I haven't had any problems. I tend to put my WIFI clients on the WRT54GL if the are G only though so I don't know if I ever get to 10 devices.

      • Just use bridge mode, no need to change this change that.

        • "bridge mode"?
Sorry, but i dont get this @.@

Bridge mode means you throw away the AC1900 part, at least if you want the devices on your own network. It's a waste. I don't need to buy another router, just use any device to serve DHCP requests. Another AP running Tomato on WRT54GL just gives me a lot of control, and it was what I was using previously. It also means I can spread the load between wireless routers and 2.4 frequencies.

          @inusure:

Gateway mode (NAT in the modem settings) means it acts as a gateway and creates a private network whilst routing internet requests to the outside world. You get to use the wireless and everything else.

Bridge mode means it acts only to give you one or two IP addresses visible on Telstra using public IP addresses. It doesn't create a private network - instead it acts as a link between your private network and the Internet. You then put your own network behind the Gateway using the WAN port on your other device to connect to any port on the Telstra device.

Bridge mode is a complete waste of the AC1900 wireless capability of the modem. I just work around the main bug that I had problems with - which was static IP addresses not honoured by the DHCP server and then I can use all it's capabilities as normal. Sure if I was made of money and had $200-$400 to burn for no good reason I could buy a second device, but why???

  • I bought this on Sunday for $209. Easy setup and good connection.

  • Does not work :(

    • Keep trying. It should work when you past 10:00 am. :)

  • Been looking for a router, must keep wallet in pocket, my router is still okay…

  • Anyone getting this error right now "We're currently having technical difficulties processing your code"

    • Sale starts at 10am, read the SECOND line of the OP!

      • That's great but if you read the deal he links to it suggest this works now if using the CVIPTREAT code which it looks like it was but isn't anymore anyway will wait till 10am

        • That's great but if you read point 1 of the deal linked, it clearly states: "Offer opens to the general public at 10.00 (AEST) on 25 August 2015". The "VIP" code is limited access for specific eBay users only, the rest of us plebs need to wait another hour…

        • @Sir Casm:

Yes and the rest of us use CTREAT20 after 10am not CVIPTREAT which is what has been posted by the OP
