You seriously comparing your Core-M laptop to this laptop with an i7 + dedicated graphics?

    • +3

i7 5th gen, 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, dedicated geforce graphics card and a full hd touch screen for $1200 a rip off? HMMMMMMMMMMMMM

    • +3

Core m, that's cute. My surface pro has more grunt than that…and I bought it for $550. You my friend, got ripped off.

    • Not even comparable. I'd rather my slightly thicker UX303LB any day over the UX305. Its probably similar reasons why people prefer the older MBA over the new MB12 when its loads more powerful.

    • +2
      • +1

hahah.. I forgot about him. hahah

    • +1

When the OzBargain squad roasting a fellow user. You just got rekt.

      • Rekt huh? I don't keep up with all the latest internet slang like I used to, but I assume that getting rekt is even worse than getting wrecked (kinda like how getting pwned is worse than getting owned)?

        • Rekt is the MLG term for 'wrecked'.

  • +2

bought a macbook pro retina 13 last week from the outlet. they look identical, I'm amazed apple haven't sued Asus! installed win 10 on apple as os x is horrible! kind of wish I'd bought this now, except for the rumoured hinge problem but would have gotten touchscreen, upgradable ssd and saved a grand!

    • +1

You gotta be trolling, who would buy a mac to run Windows? The keyboard is not well suited for it..

      • +1

I know people who buy macs based purely on build quality and warranty but personally I agree with you.

        • +1

You could buy a 5yr manufacturer warranty on another pc and still be hundreds ahead of buying a mac.

Thinkpad carbon is the sort of thing I'd get if I was buying based on build quality and just running Windows.

        • @Agret:
I wouldnt trust a Lenovo laptop to be anywhere near the word "quality" to be honest. It was when they were "IBM" but no longer. Huge fan of the Thinkpad T4x series which are still rated as one of the best ever made.

        • -1

@bchliu: Plus they spy on you, do not trust Lenovo

      • No. It's really well built, and I thought from a few minutes in the shop that it was nice. But os x hasn't moved on from my last iMac in 2008 (at least, it doesn't feel like it to me having used it again now), its not been innovative. Apple fans will say different, but there it is, a personal opinion. The Mac is more powerful than this (graphics aside) but I can't see myself enjoying os x whereas win 10 seems to answer my bugbears with win 8.x. Each to their own. Expensive mistake, but I'm sure the rMBP will give me years of good service.

      • +1

No.. I had a MBA since 2011 and the primary OS was Windows 7. I hate MacOS and minimised it to 20GB whilst giving the rest to Windows. Why would I do this? Apple makes very high quality hardware / laptops. This unfortunately is true - and I'm a self proclaimed Apple hater that gets laughed at by friends whenever I pull out my MBA. haha.. :)

        • +1

I'm with you. I installed windows 10 on boot camp so I can use it whenever something isn't compatible with OS x. Honestly OS x is a pain to use and it's really unintuitive to me. It's been 3-4 months and I haven't gotten used to it yet.

    • +1

You can easily sell it and get this… Might lose some $ over all but kind of pointless using windows on a mac.. :) I'm not an osx fan but always thought if you get an apple ur paying premium money for the OS specially when they moved to Intel chips… :)

      • +3

Apple laptops - Half the hardware for the same amount of Money.. but you probably get twice the quality of build as any of the other brands. I prefer running Windows on the MAC any day over MacOS.

        • Really? After the shit that was Vista, 8, and now 10, you must be joking? Come on, try a real (unix) based OS for once!

        • +2

          @cakesy:
          what shit?

        • +2

          @cakesy:

Lets just say I'm quite familiar with *NIX based systems and certified for a couple of them on an Enterprise level. I still keep going back to Windows as my main OS of choice because of the amount of support and stuff that is available on this platform. I got sick of "being different" I suppose with Hackintoshes, Linuxes etc. and feel most comfortable mainstream given all the stuff I do (you dont get Visio or Project on MacOS as an example). Yes, you can virtualise it etc but kind of defeats the purpose just so that you can brag to others about being different. Hence why I prefer Windows on my MBA as the default.

The only other OS I use on a daily basis is Android (and yes, I do use it as a desktop OS too since my Note Edge is docked into a monitor and keyboard/mouse). Its different, fun and tons of support too for it along with the flexibility to run as a phone / tablet / set top / desktop OS as well.

      • you are paying for quality materials and design.

        • Windows ultrabooks also have top quality materials and design, I don't know what is particularly good about macbooks in this area tbh…

        • @clse945111:

I paid $1500 for my 13 inch macbook pro i5, 256gb, 8gb ram.. Slight premium but I would say the macbook would be a bit more powerful still with better battery life and screen possibly.

        • @clse945111: not really and the ones that are like the toshibs kirabook are just as expensive as macbook air/pro 13

        • @ubcool:
Asus ux301, ux303, maybe even ux305, Acer S7, Dell XPS 13, Lenovo yoga pro 3, HP Spectre X360 - these all have the best materials on the market (aluminium or carbonfibre, and glass on the S7), also really good design and thin (Yoga pro 3 and S7 are the thinnest you can find), not to mention most are touch enabled.
Macbooks use good materials, yes - Aluminium, and so do the other top of the line laptops. We're not talking about cheap plastic ugly thick laptops here because the deal is actually the UX303, a metal ultrabook.

And yes definitely not cheap, but did I ever say they were cheaper than macbooks?
Warranty service would be the only real reason I'd choose a Macbook/Apple product over the other ones, because "the logo" means nothing to me.

        • +1

          @trumpedup:
Macbook Pro uses the older i5 (which is a grade lower than the i7 in this model). This one is slightly thinner (in between the MBA and MBP), has a discrete Graphics card and even though its not "retina", it is still FHD plus the added touch screen. The only thing MBP beats this model is battery life and that's because it is using MacOS where it doesnt use resources as much as Windows does during idle. If you did use Windows with the Mac, the battery life would be rather comparable with this.

        • +1

          @clse945111:
Build quality is not only about the materials used within it. It is also about the engineering, the way it is put together and the usability of the item.

It is the same for cars in another analogy - closing a door on a high end Merc or BMW versus closing the door on a Hyundai or Mitsubishi is rather different. They all made of metal, all are doors for the same purpose of protecting the passengers but the latch mechanisms, the swivel points and everything makes a huge difference with a soft click of prestige to the loud bang of the budget. Sounds BS doesnt it? But it is a selling point to people who go after this stuff.

        • +1

@clse945111: ive seen all those laptops , yes some of them look good but none of them look or feel as well made as the apple. they are full of bloat.track pads arnt great, some over heat, some sound like airplanes about to take off, had a macbook air 4 years ago, nothing came close it it at the time, remember these current macbook pros, airs design are 3/4 years old nothing came close it at the time, and nothing will come close to the redesign models next year when they come out . i didnt buy it to pose in coffee shops. ive had hp,sony, toshiba, compaq and acer laptops in the past, none as lasted more than 2 years, they either break, battery becomes useless or become slow. i had a 4 year old macbook air full of stuff its still works perfect and looks great, still starts up in less than 10 seconds, still runs fast , never had a virus, battery still lasts a good few hours.touchpad still best on market. it hardly ever freezes and if i sell it could still get more than half of what i paid for it. plus microsoft are loosing the plot with their overly complicated windows software.

        • +1

          @ubcool:
Try the trackpad on this thing, its really good! Bigger than any Windows laptop trackpad I've ever used, feels like a mac trackpad.

        • @clse945111: All of them? Every one?

        • +1

          @ubcool:
Have you ever used recent ultrabooks? (Like within 2.5 years I'd say)
Starts up in 3 sec, battery life still not the best but usually lasts from about 5 hours to some claiming like 17 hours.
It hardly ever freezes and is definitely one of the easiest to use OS on the market without needing to look for alternative software.
Asus' touchpad is also the best I've used as well, and that's on a cheapo $300 laptop, not sure about other brands.

        • @cakesy:
I'd say most recent ultrabooks, within around 2-2.5 years. Do you think otherwise?

    • It is funny how almost all laptops have started to look like macbooks these days.

      • +2

Yeah, every laptop looks like the macbook, and every phone looks like the iphone, am I right?

The reality is, they sort of just copy each other, and it's no big deal really. Look at how apple copied the back of the m7/m8 to their iPhone, and Samsung copied the bottom of the iPhone to the S6. Apple gets copied for sure, doesn't mean they don't copy others.

  • What's the general consensus on this laptop? Good enough for video editing?

What parts are expandable and is the graphics card any good?

    • +1

Enough RAM to run your multi monitors and video edit, rendering will be on the slow side (heat will slow it down further) but with the Nvidia cuda cores at least you're ahead of the other ultrabooks if you choose to render.

Gaming would be along the lines of 60frames at the PS3/Xbox360 style graphics, something like Resident Evil 6, in other words solid light gaming.

I would switch to this over my now 3yr old Sony Vaio S, but hard to justify when it'll be a side-grade for me.

    • SSD is a standard 2.5".
There's apparently a half-height msata slot for extra SSD
1 RAM stick is removable, 1 is soldered.
UX303LN is the predecessor to the UX303LB [LB just has 5th gen intel cpus]

    • Questions all answered in this review (slightly lower model of the i5 - but pretty much everything applies)
      http://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-Zenbook-UX303LB-940M-Subno…

  • +2

Great deal.. would buy this if I didn't already have a laptop

Tempted to buy it anyway.. oh boy

  • +1

FINALLY! been eyeing this for weeks! (well, ever since i missed out on the last one by 15 minutes)

  • +6

I got one from the last deal and its absolutely awesome. There is one thing though - the laptop isnt as thin as what they make it out to be in the pictures. The pics tend to conveniently cut off the drop down from the sides and you will find it is fairly thick in comparison to a MBA (which I came from).

I'm not complaining though since its twice the specs of the equivalent MBA 13" at the same price (Twice the RAM, SSD, Better CPU, Discrete Graphics and a touch screen).

    • +2

How much battery life are you getting on normal usage?

      • ^This, i'm considering getting it, could sweeten the deal if i knew the battery life in use and on standby

      • +3

Around 6 hours on moderate use (mainly browsing, emails and productivity) but I use maximum brightness etc.. Using Windows 10. Apparently pretty easily upgradeable too - the SSD can be upgraded to 1TB (using the main 2.5" SATA slot) and also has a "spare" microsized eSATA port (maximum 128GB at moment) and it is possible to up the RAM yourself if you want to replace it with 2x8 GB.
The 2GB Geforce 940m is surprisingly decent for games. Ran Sleeping Dogs in 1080p medium settings pretty well and smooth (>30fps on the benchmark). I love it and recommend it..

        • "and it is possible to up the RAM yourself if you want to replace it with 2x8 GB."

so if I get the 4GB marked model I can make the ram only 12GB and if I get the 8GB I can get it 16 by adding a one. So the marked RAM indicates the soldered one right?

        • @kiLbiL:
My mistake. 4GB is soldered on but the other 4GB is in the slot. You should be able to put an 8GB one on to make 12GB all up. Not sure if it will take a 16GB SODIMM though.

    • It has a dedicated graphics. Of course it will have to be thicker. If you want a thinner ultrabook, order a core-M version instead

  • +1

Crap, just bought the UX303LA this morning, this is only $100 more and has the i7 and discrete card. Nice find and shame on me for not waiting!

    • +5

  • Hello all,

Got few questions, hope anyone can help with the answer, (I went to ebay page and saw)

    1. NVIDIA(R), GeForce(R), 940M ( N16S-GT) (no mention 2GB Discrete Graphics),
Q: Is this same as nVidia Geforce GT940M 2GB ?

    2. Packaged Weight: 3.6kg
Q: The unit itself weight = 1.45 kg (with Polymer Battery)? - which i saw online UX303LB this wight.

Last question: when will this deal expire?

Just want to make sure this is the same model (that i want), before i buy.
Sorry if my question sound stupid.

    Thank you for answer,

    • +1

      "when will this deal expire"

      sold 18 today.

      • Thank you for reply,

Any idea about the graphic "NVIDIA® GeForce® 940M"? Is this 2gb Discrete Graphics?

        Thank

        • Yes it is. 2GB of Discrete memory (not shared)

        • @bchliu:

Thank you for the info, the order is confirmed ;-) !! Now sit tight and wait for instruction to pick up.

          Cheer

      • sold 18 today.

Make that 21 and going up..

  • My son is changing schools in Term 4 this year and will need to hand in his current school owned Macbook and will need to buy him his own laptop as a BYO device at his new school. I want to get him back to Windows as I personally hate macs. As battery power is a big factor in the choice of laptop (sorry ultrabook as they specify it must be) I had been eyeing up the Dell XPS13 which claims to have 10+ hours power and also seems a similar replacement for his macbook but at least gets him on Windows… just waiting on Dell having a few hundred dollars off it again though as the price went back up a few weeks ago from when I was first looking at it.

This ASUS deal looks quite good but the comment above that it only gets around 6 hours battery life bothers me as I would really prefer at least 8+.

Any thoughts on this deal or any other ultrabook/laptop I should be considering?

    • Consider HP Spectre X360, it claims 10+ hours battery life as well.

      • Thanks for the suggestion. I think he is keen to have something as stylish as the macbook but knows I want to push him back on to Windows so the Spectre looks promising and certainly comparable to the Dell XPS13. I'll have to do a bit more research.

    • If battery life is a high priority Bing Lee have the UX305 for $1039.20 after the 20% discount (plus additional 2.5% cashback)

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Asus-Zenbook-UX305FA-Notebook-M-5…

      • The 4GB of RAM seems a bit on the low side but thanks for the suggestion… I still have a month or so to get something so I will do a bit more research I think.

    • If your son doesn't use maximum brightness (I'm personally always on lowest brightness), then I'm sure it could hit 8+ hours?

Will this be your son's main computer? Or is it purely for school? Does he play any games?

      • A teenage boy who doesn't use a laptop to play games? Do they exist? So the answer is yes he does… far too many games but then again I am probably a bad influence there! :-) And yes, it will be his main computer.

I have another month or so to buy something so think I will sit tight and do a bit more research… I hadn't even considered the Spectre X360 mentioned above which also looks a candidate.

that might help you to compare the notebooks you mentioned, and do some research on.

As long as it's not demanding games it should be able to last. I don't think a laptop exists where on gaming it will last over 3 hours unless you're carrying a monster battery.
Using mine for uni at the moment, pretty good!

    • As much as I have been dissing the guy claiming the UX305 being better - it does have a place and its probably in this instance. The UX303 has the discrete graphics and the more powerful processor which translates to more power usage. The UX305 is much more conservative due to the Core-M processor and the lack of discrete graphics card. That will definitely get you over the 8 hour mark (most reviews say between 9 and 12 hours). Futu has three versions of this laptop:
      8GB RAM / 256GB SSD ($1500)
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Asus-Zenbook-UX305FA-Ultrabook-In…
      8GB RAM / 128GB SSD ($1350)

      • "Oh no, we forgot to jack up the prices!" said futu.

Saw them this morning at the prices you posted and was tempted, but looks like they're now $1595 and $1395 respectively.

        • Ouch.. nasty.. those were the prices yesterday BEFORE 20% off.. hahah

      Don't buy dell XPS.

I'm selling mine. Maybe I have been really unlucky, maybe my expectations were very high..but it has the worst touchpad I have ever had in a laptop.

Already replaced, did not change a bit.

Apparently it is a problem of all the laptop with the precision pad (google for it), but still.. It makes it barely usable without a mouse.

      :(

    • Block-quote I want to get him back to Windows as I personally hate macs

Come on now, he's the one using it. Maybe its best YOU set a limit of how much you want to spend and let HIM decide which computer HE wants to use. Personally, OS X is the single greatest thing ever.

      • When I get roped into helping with homework then I am the one using it and all the little Apple quirks drive me nuts! If he wants help with homework (and to play my Steam library!) he needs to be on Windows. I will give him the choice of machines… just want to narrow it down to a few good candidates that he will smoothly be able to switch to and not whinge that it is not as stylish as his macbook was.

I am sure Windows quirks irritate Mac users in a similar manner when they use a windows machine.

  • Almost same specs except the Nvidia graphics i got in HP Spectre 360 which is a real beauty and light weight ie 1.48kg and i prefer 100% more than MBR.I bought HP frm JB for $1650

  • How's the battery life compared to the UX305?

    • 6hrs usable vs 10hrs.
Then again its an i7+gpu vs core M
Not fair to compare a V8 vs an 'energy efficient' engine that has no power.
